License 3.5 hosts with Vsphere licenses

Until vSphere has passed the etc test, and we know its compatible with all of our infrastructure, we cannot upgrade in the production environment. At the same time the production environment need to grow - new hosts added etc. If I understand correctly, it is now only possible to buy vSphere licenses. These licenses are compatible with the infrastructure 3.5 and can they be used until we update. Can licenses be temporarily downgraded?

Yes, you can downgrde licenses vSphere -'s done it on the Licensing Portal and when you're ready return you vSphere licenses licenses.

  • How to add in DVS ESX hosts with vsphere SDK for perl?

    Hello

I am a newbie to vsphere SDK for perl. Just started using it for automation of one month back. , I was looking for options to automate the addition of ESXi servers and their physical cards in the distributed virtual switch. I got some details on how to add using powerCLI. However, my requirements are in the use of vsphere SDK for perl. Any help would be appreciated.

Have we not like subroutines or plug editable in vsphere SDK for perl inorder to add host ESX in DVS. ?
    Thank you and best regards,
    Lebou

You can certainly do it in Perl.  I don't have a working example, but perhaps that William will be when he catches this thread

If I have time tomorrow, I'll try to put something together to help you get started, but you can also simply map the logic of LucD script.

Basically Get - view is equivalent to Vim: get_view() and New-Object calls should be mapped to the type of object in Perl, for example, instead of VMware.Vim.DVSConfigSpec New-Object, we $spec = DVSConfigSpec-> (again).

    Thank you

The upgrade of the agent vSphere is transparent.

You can lose the remote management of vCenter for a short period, but the virtual machines on that host will work without interruption.

    Hello

It seems that the solution to this question is very simple. Just search with the right criteria.

    Sorry for that.

The solution is to delete the cache of the browser you are using to connect to the host.

But now the following problem occurs.

Once connected using a windows session. I do not see my host, nor of the vm on it.

    I hope someone can help.

  • Problem with vSphere license

I am trying to add a license to a free vSphere installation 5.1 and I see this error message. My Dell R710 server has 72G RAM, 2 x 1 TB and 2 x 6-Core 5660 2.80 Hz CPU.

I have attached the log. Any help will be appreciated!

    Thank you

    JM

With vSphere 5.0, VMware is launching a policy which limited the maximum physical memory on a host or a cluster, according to licenses "vRAM". For the free hypervisor maximum was 32GB. This political vRam has been deleted again with vSphere 5.5 (see for example KB VMware: VMware vSphere 5.5 license and/or Update vRAM political). I'm not sure if policy has also been removed from the earlier 5.x version with the latest patches!

  • Personal project: convert with VM Linux host to vSphere Hypervisor

    Hello

I have been using VMware Workstation for some years both for personal and professional purposes.

I would like to convert my Linux host with multiple virtual machines to vSphere Hypervisor server with all my existing virtual machines and data.

I currently have a Ubuntu 10.10 desktop on which I run Workstation 8 to host multiple virtual machines to Linux as a WebSphere Portal cluster (LDAP, DB2, ND, Portal 2 nodes). I also use it to host a VortexBox VM that contains my music collection. The audio files are not in the hard of the VortexBox, but are accessed through a sharing of the host folder. I have also several years of photos and documents on the host system.

    The material consists of:

    Motherboard Asus M4A785TD-V

    Corsair XMS3 16 GB

Intel PWLA8391GTBLK PRO/1000 GT Desktop Network adapt

    1 x Hitachi 1 TB (empty)

    1 x Seagate 160 GB (photos, video)

2 x Seagate 300 GB (Ubuntu, music, data, VMs)

I am very new to vSphere. What I did was install vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 5) on a USB 8 GB on the above system and created a store of data of the 1 TB drive.

I also installed vSphere Client on a virtual Windows XP machine running on my MacBook; that I used to create the data store.

Can someone provide measures of high level on how to proceed?

I have an external hard drive on which I can copy existing virtual machines to deploy to the host of vSphere through Workstation 8.

My main concern is the best way to keep my collection of music/photo/video to make it accessible by the VM VortexBox.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    Miguel

' Copy the VMs convert to another system so that I can deploy to the area of ESXi? Or is there a way to locate the VMs converted from the ESXi host (via vSphere Client) and deploy? »

ESXi must work so that the converter convert and move them to ESXi. Since it is the same dialog that VMware Workstation works on, it would mean that Ubuntu and workstation are turned off. You convert the raw files to workstation (which takes care of the tool). This will probably mean temporarily copy workstation virtual machine files to a temporary location.

"What is the advantage of the use of VMware Converter instead of use the VMware Workstation 8 to download the virtual machines on the ESXi host?"

Eventually no matter. But remember that since ESXi must be executed, you can have the two ESXi running AND Ubuntu/workstation at the same time on the same box, so in your case, wouldn't be able to do this. Another option exports all the VMS to the models of the FVO (for an external HARD drive), and then once ESXi is running, import the OVFs.

"I like the point that do you on a VM file server. If I decide to implement this option, I would be able to connect to the existing hard disks on the ESXi host without having to reformat, to preserve my data (music, photos, videos, docs, etc.)? Any recommendations? "

Although it is technically possible to have a linux format hard drive visible to virtual machines (such as a ROW), it is very unusual and massively overcomplicates things. The best thing to do would be to move the data on the hard drive temporarily, format them as VMFS data stores and then only move the data back ontop readers in a virtual hard drive. To do this way, you get all the benefits of virtualization (eg. being able to easily move this virtual hard disk on different volumes and attach easily to different virtual machines, etc.). It's a little pain in the short term, but the long-term gain.

«I'm assuming that a VM file server would be different from a NAS VM, as I have to format disks in file system regardless of the SIN in the SIN prefer (I saw a YouTube video describing FreeNAS).»

A NAS and file server are essentially the same. There is nothing more an operating system that data sharing. They all use the same protocol for sharing (samba, CIFS, iSCSI, etc.), so it does not matter in general. But yes, typically performance based most NAS on Linux OSs, so yes, it's finally sitting on a file system (ext2/3/4) of Linux. Which shouldn't matter however, as long as your other machines can access the data. If I were you, I would buy a consumer NAS (which will offer more storage and can be extended), or configure a simple VM (like FreeNAS or other) and just give him a big a VHD.

  • Update / fixes ESXi single host with VCSA running on it.

We have just updated since the free version of ESXi 5 by ordering the Kit of Essentials. In the process, of course, we were able to deploy vCenter Update Manager (which has been the main motivation, like patching manually the free version seemed to be quite a pain). We have a Windows host that has installed the Update Manager, and we have a VCSA running on the single instance of ESXi, we deployed to date. We were able to install the plugin on the viClient and scan the ESXi host for patches with success (a need a good number). But, we're stuck trying to install the patches... us when trying to restore the host, we get: "the operation is not supported on the selected inventory items. Check events for the objects selected for the operation.

    The host says:

The 10.0.1.80 host has a virtual VMware vCenter machine

Device server with VMware vSphere update

Virtual MACHINE needs to be moved to another host for the

Looking at this logic, for the host switch to maintenance mode, the VCSA should have been suspended (apparently, actually moved), which would avoid in turn patches / updates to the deployment. Am I correct in thinking, that we have a second host and networked storage? Made a Kit Essentials / license provide for the possibility of vMotion from one host to another? It wasn't really clear... Yes, the web site says "vMotion" is included in most Essentials, but find it me hard to imagine any point to a facility in ESXi stream without the ability to vMotion between one system and another guest...

    Welcome to the community,

And since you have only an ESXi host and your vCSA is running on this host, you cannot patch this host with Update Manager for reason that already know you: the host should be the maintenance mode.

Add about another host, with Kit Essentials without vMotion functionality, you can try using a data store of shared storage between two hosts, stop the vCSA on first host and switch the vCSA on the second host... and finally the first host patch.

  • vCenter Server 5.5 compatibility with vSphere 4 hypervisor

I recently installed vCenter Server 5.5.0.5201 (with a Standard license valid vCenter) and I am trying to add the hosts to vCenter data center. I can connect successfully to the host but vSphere displays the following error:

"The host is licensed with vSphere 4 hypervisor. The license of vCenter Server edition doesn't support vSphere 4 hypervisor. »

Now I found the slot compatibility matrix and there clearly shows that vCenter 5.5 is compatible with all the way back to version 4 for ESXi. I must be missing something, can someone please clarify the question.

    vCenter_Compatibility.PNG

I know that vSphere hypervisor and ESXi Server is essentially the same but vSphere hypervisor is the free version, so is there a difference that I know?

This happens because you are using a free license on the ESXi 4.1 key.

"The host is licensed with vSphere 4 hypervisor" means that it is a free ESXi. You will not be able to manage the free ESXi with vCenter.

  • Problems with vSphere replication

    Hello

Ive been with vSphere for about a week now and I'm faced with the logic of the replication tool V.

I've been creeping (don't not trolling) forums and web trying to find a good source that can explain this plugin which is visible in my Web client installation method. I also license MORE.

This is probably the only one I can find so far: -.

    http://vknowledge.NET/2012/09/12/vSphere-5-1-getting-started-with-vSphere-replication-5-1/

What I want to achieve is to reproduce all the virtual machines on one of my servers to another identical server of the G8.

Two questions if you could help please?

    1. someone any good tutorials on it.

    2. I went and made a schoolboy error, I think, I gave the vSphere replicaiton appliance the same IP address as my ESXi host. (This is how I am wrong) and now I can not access the host because of this machine. Can someone tell me how I can reconnect to this machine without a comprehensive resettlement and reconstruction of 50 guests or more.

Thanks in advance if you can help.

It is difficult to explain the internel operation of the SRM, vsphere replication etc... in this little time...

the basics are simple... How it works... ?

There are 2 types of replication replication 1-vsphere 2-array based replication

vpshere replication is a basic agent - it's a VR agent will be there inside the esxi hosts this monitor of the agent running the virtual machine inside this host and replicates data binding if WAN remote site.

the main PR\648606FR here is - once the replication of the entire virtual machine that's happened, after that only the blocks changed the VMFS will be launched on the... which is the only the modified virtual machine data will be replicated. It's called CBT, VR agent follows the blocks inside the VMFS, if any block of virtual machine data is changed it will get replicated.

dosent it replication vsphere require no support from the underlying storage Bay...

the second is the table of a function... where the entire replication is managed by the matrix of storage... and it works with the MRS.

See the post for more details... http://communities.VMware.com/message/2175005#2175005

    now to your questions.

    1. someone any good tutorials on it. -the best method is to read the official docs...

  • ESXi 5 for host with more than 32 GB of RAM

    Hello, Dear Sirs!

I'm tempted vmware ESXi 5 on our small server and it works fine (server has 16 GB of RAM). Thank you!

Now, we decided to perform a small upgrade and increase RAM, say, up to about 90 GB.

I hear a guy (and also various discussions here and there, applied to different versions of ESXi and ESX) this license free (but still required registration) of ESXi allow only up to 32 GB of RAM. Is this true for the 5th version of ESXi. In other places (like http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2009/06/esxi-vs-esx-a-comparison-of-features.html), this information do not confirmed.

If this is the case, we would like to purchase a license. But here, I stuck too: what type of license do we choose?

I am confused with vSphere, vCenter, and many other things, never tried they...

It seems like we don't have that one server, so I guess we are a staff of vSphere, do we?

BTW, there are several processors (as I know) and each of them has several nuclei. Do take effect on the process of choice?

    Thank you very much!

    Sergei Petrunin

    Welcome to the community,

For the current licenses, see http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf

Free hypervisor is indeed limited to 32 GB of physical memory, while all the other editions (paying) are licensed per processor/socket, without any limitation on the hearts by taking power or memory. In your case - assuming you ESXi host have not more than 2 Sockets - I suggest that you take a look at the edition of Essentials.

  • Adding a host of vSphere

Finally got a license to add a new vSphere host. My current 3 hosts running vSphere 4.0 but I am currently with my support and maintanence so licensed v5 iron.

Was looking for advice about the 4th host. Should I install vSphere v5 or go with the exact version as well as the current servers?

    Thanks in advance.

you will need to go to your licensing portal, there you have the possibility to 'come back' key to vSphere5 vSphere4.  When you are ready to go to vSphere5, just 'upgrade' button again.

  • Cluster with VSphere Essentials

When I try to create a cluster with VSphere Essentials (no more) I'm offered HA and DRS (they are not greyed out, they are available). Are these trial versions that will be disabled in the future, or they are now included in Essentials?

My understanding is that they would be unavailable at all. that is, they would be gray.

To view your features under license:

    1. Open the vSphere Client and connect to your vCenter Server
    2. Select a host in your cluster
    3. Click the Configuration tab
    4. Click on the link "Features licensed" under the software

All licensed features are presented here. Search for "VMware HA" and "VMware DRS" see if they are allowed.

  • vCentre with vSphere Enterprise and vCentre with vSphere Enterprise Plus

We used 4 * VMware ESX Enterprise 3.5 U4 with Center Virtual v2.5 to our datacenter keys for 2 years. With the release of vSphere we have upgraded to vSphere Enterprise with vCentre since we had bought maintenance for 3 years.

Now let's deploy another 4 * vSphere Enterprise more than servers in one of our other data centers in another location and use of the vCentre same server as our key data center. Two data centers are connected via an MPLS connection.

My query is what is happening with regard to the two lic. and the characteristics of vCentre/vSphere so we have a places vSphere Enterprise Clusters and in another site running a vSphere Enterprise clusters rained for two configurations of the plant as the vSwitch distributed with Ent to a network running. More and the other added features more from the company. What happens if we use the Cisco Nexus 1000 what impact also who have on the global configuration if a site is running Enterprise and other companies.

And also how should I handle the licenses of some of my servers are Ent. and others are Ent. More?

    Thank you very much

Of course also take into account the fact that you can't mix and match servers with different levels of license

For example: If you use enterprise more to Host Profiles and dvSwitch - you can't have the ESX hosts with a lower level of the license in the same cluster
