Cluster with VSphere Essentials

When I try to create a cluster with VSphere Essentials (no more) I'm offered HA and DRS (they are not greyed out, they are available). Are these trial versions that will be disabled in the future, or they are now included in Essentials?

My understanding is that they would be unavailable at all. that is, they would be gray.

To view your features under license:

  1. Open the vSphere Client and connect to your vCenter Server
  2. Select a host in your cluster
  3. Click the Configuration tab
  4. Click on the link "Features licensed" under the software

All licensed features are presented here. Search for "VMware HA" and "VMware DRS" see if they are allowed.

Really new on this type of subject, so forgive me if IAM iam do or say something wrong. I'm here to try to understand better this amazing tool so I apreciate your time and knowlodge!
Im trying to create a failover and balancing cluster with Vsphere, the goal is try to install an MSSQL DB server where the customer can access more quickly and do not have downtime when a node is down.

I read a lot but still I can't have a full understand abt, so if anyone tries to explain something, please be patient and explain with precision.

All doing wrong if you really work at home as a LABORATORY, and I can do it, hurt trying to use it to get a job because I don't have and I really need one soon!
Here is my diagram is possible?

    Diagrama Cluster HA-DRS.jpg

Well ill to explain it, I have clients that will send a work for my DB load process, which will affect on MSSQL Server installed on the 12 TB logical drive created from the union of all methods virtual storage. Each virtual storage is just a virtual disk created on a virtual machine that is hosted on the physical server (node).

So I have 4 physical server which have 1 VM each with 3 TB of virtual disk, the goal is the customer can send the process of workload on 4 nodes to have a quicker response, and if a single node fails for any reason, the other node can operate withow problem.

physical server Medley: don't know yet if I have to use one or install VMWARE directly.

Sagna VM: Windows Server 2008 (don't know if necessary or if I can just install SQL Server directly)

MSSQL Server VM: 2008 Enterprise (still don't know if I have to use this one)

Well I can't think right now on the other details, but if you tell me ill be happy to write it.

Sorry if my writing or semantics is false but English is not my first language.

Really thanks to get to this point and share your knowlodge!

Josh, please correct me if I'm wrong, you have 4 knots of MS - SQL, and you need to read/write at the same time in a shared database of 12 to.

  • RV with Vsphere Essentials 5.1 more

My Client will buy 2 servers, and each server has 2 CPUs. And he'll buy vsphere essentials 5.1 pack. but the thing is he'll find a server in one place and the other server is in another remote location. two servers can be connected by using a VPN. There are now the following things. Please explain to me that these things can be done.
    1. He must manage two servers using a single VCenter.
    2. he won't buy any external storage. Instead it will use the internal memory. and he needs to implement storage device to do a cluster between the two servers.
    3. must use VR for replication. (from one server to another) without the help of the SRM. He will use the Group feature (VR) essentials with pack.
    4. he needs 20 virtual machines in a server and the same servers in the other server installation. If a server crashes while it must use the remote server as the production server.
Thank you. Please update me as soon as possible.

Yes, you can... that's what VR is all about.

  • Use of the Resource Pool with vSphere Essentials

A silly question but I have to ask anyway:

I have a license of vSphere Essentials with my two hosts ESXi4.  I knew that he was not in vSphere DRS.  What was not so obvious to me, it's that you need DRS activated in order to create a pool of resources to the cluster level vSphere without it.  (The option to create a new cluster is grayed out). http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1004098

    So my question is:

Are there benefits to creating a cluster if you do not have DRS?  I now have to double and create pools of resources at the level of the host for two guests, who is an administrative burden.  In addition, one of the main reasons I have used resource pools was to facilitate the access rights based upon roles to specific virtual machines.   These two will now have to be defined for each host.

We greatly appreciate your comments on this

Other than the ability to use the VCA mode and setting up the location of the pagefile.  According to me, there isn't much more to a cluster if you use no HA or DRS.  Since you do not have DRS yor cannot create pools of resources that span multiple hosts within a cluster.

You will need to create individual pools of resources on each host by taking your host from a cluster and have just in the data center.

  • vCenter Server with vSphere Essentials best practices for small business

I hesitated to post this thread for fear of redundancy, but I wasn't able to find an answer in previous discussions.

I read the installation documentation for vSphere Essentials vCenter Server installation.

Is it a good idea to install vCenter on my ESXi host as a virtual machine?  I don't understand how the server can be installed as a virtual machine if she must always be on.  What happens when I do the updates of the hypervisor, ESXi (4.0 to 4.1)?  This would not cause the vCenter Server to disconnect?

Because I have Essentials, I don't have a HA and cannot migrate the server vCenter Server to another host as shown in the installation documentation.

    Thank you

It should not be a problem - if you manually perform the update using either the esxupdate or vcenter command vihostupdate does not at all in the game - if you use VUM he actually intitiates the vihostupdate order - when restarting the host to be reconnecting to vcenter once it is running.

  • ESXi 4.1 Standard for VSphere Essentials?

Hello. We have two hosts with Esxi embedded 4.1 standard. We use local, non-shared storage, and soon we will not anytime shared storage.

In order to obtain cost-effective centralized managemend (right now I have to use separate Vi clients for each host), I was instructed to check Vsphere Essentials.

It looks like it may work for us as we only use not the more advanced of the Standard license options, however I wonder if I'll have to re - install Vsphere on my hosts in order to centrally manage, or if the console provided with Vsphere Essentials will centalized management of my servers Esxi pre-existing without changing my installation current Esxi... does make sense? My Vmware sales representative wasn't sure of what I would have to do.

    Thank you!

    PK

VMware binaries are the same for all editions, so there is usually no problem with replacement of the license key. However, with the embedded edition that you mentioned, I'm not sure. It's an OEM version specific provider ESXi or did you install the version of VMware? In the case of a specific edition of the seller, you can contact the vendor to find out if the license change is allowed/possible. If it is not possible to change the license, it should be possible to reinstall ESXi on the USB/SD device without problems for virtual machines. All you need to do in this case is to reconfigure the host (for example, network, NTP,...)

About centralized management, there is also no re-installation of the ESXi servers needed. All you need to do is deploy a virtual instance of vCenter Server (based on Windows or the Appliance vCenter) and connect the hosts to this instance. This can be done without interruption of service for virtual machines.

  • VSphere Essentials Plus Kit vs Standard

    All the

I need help to make a decision here.  The environment is both physical server (2 CPU each) and they run out of a small local SAN.  I was going to get Essentials more but the problem is that it is around $ 5500 per server physical and that is almost as expensive as the server.  I'm looking for alternatives and I fell on VSphere Standard edition.  Although Essentials Plus has all the Bell and whistle I am looking for, but we can live with HA and vMotion.  The truth is that I can live with 15 minutes of downtime, I just need to know if I should get VSphere Standard edition or even Essentials that I have the opportunity to make a VM if I experience hardware failure?  Thank you in advance.

    Welcome to the community,

vSphere Essentials Plus Kit comes with a license for an instance of vCenter Server Essentials and 6 CPU license for up to 3 guests with up to 2 processors each. No need to buy a Kit by server.

  • Newbie question: ESXi 6.0 free vs vSphere Essentials Kit

I currently have a server host running ESXi 5.5 (free version), accommodation mainly a lab with SQL servers and workstations Windows infrastructure.

I plan to upgrade the vSphere Essentials Kit and I was wondering what are the additional benefits I would get paid Kit essentials ESXi free 6.0 vs.

So far, I can think of the following:

-Possibility to install on two additional host servers (however I don't really have this requirement for the moment)

-Compatibility with VMWare as ALTARO and VEEAM backup software. (This would be beneficial)

What are the other benefits Essentials Kit would offer a server environment unique host which would be sufficiently attractive to force one to go compared to the free version?

    Thank you for any comments.

Another great advantage will be the Server vCenter which adds lots of features and will help you manage all three hosts. Have a look here some of the additional benefits: http://www.vladan.fr/esxi-free-vs-paid/

  • Problems with vSphere 6.0 and IIS 8.5

    Hi all

We have a very rare problem currently with IIS on a new version of vSphere 6.0.  We run 3 host ESX enterprise in a standard cluster with a standalone VCSA.

The problems that we know are response times in IIS.  We lack an asp.net web application using ado.net to extract simple data sets in a cluster SQL from 2012.  The web server running Windows Server R2 with IIS 8.5.9600.16384 2012.  It comes to virtualized.  Our SQL servers are also running on Windows Server 2012 R2, but this is a physical cluster.  All components are updated running the latest windows patches, fixes vmware, etc.

We have tried to limit the problem using wireshark, we noticed that speeds improved dramatically when running wireshark.  We have finally pinned it down to the NETWORK card is in promiscuous mode - mode "Promiscuous", web response times app are sub 100ms, and when we disable the promiscuous mode, response time pop up to 4 + seconds.

I found a few articles that might put this question of vSphere RARP and NLB in unicast mode, but we do not use NLB on any of these servers, and many of our tests were performed on servers IIS "standalone".

Someone encountered this problem before, and anyone has pointers?

    Thank you

It looks exactly like the problem that is described in this thread:

vmxnet3 adapter on windows server 2012 with problem of bottleneck for MSSQL Server

You also use the vmxnet3 vNIC?

If yes are trying one of these workarounds mentioned in the other thread (I'd go with LRO to start, do not forget to restart):

    E1000E use instead of vmxnext3

Use jumbo frames (not really good for us but can be one good option for others...)

Disable the LRO on a VMXNET3: enable or disable LRO on VMXNET3 adapter on a Windows Virtual Machine

Turn on LRO overall on a Windows Virtual Machine

With vSphere 5.0, VMware is launching a policy which limited the maximum physical memory on a host or a cluster, according to licenses "vRAM". For the free hypervisor maximum was 32GB. This political vRam has been deleted again with vSphere 5.5 (see for example KB VMware: VMware vSphere 5.5 license and/or Update vRAM political). I'm not sure if policy has also been removed from the earlier 5.x version with the latest patches!

Looks like that you always use your evaluation key for your instance of vCenter instead of your purchased key.  If you click on the tab of systems vCenter server you should be able to pass the eval on a key your purchased key.  That should solve your problem.

  • vSphere Essentials Plus to level 4.1 to 5.5

    Hi all

I begin the process of upgrading a 4.1 Essentials in addition to 5.5, also essential Plus.

My question is not directly related to the issue of upgrading, but rather ask some advice from a more experienced user. I'll try to explain my problem.

Our current data center consists of three physical servers each with, among other material:

    -2 physical CPU

    -32 GB OF RAM

    -6 GB/s NIC

We also have two switches to provide redundancy of the network between the host computers

The current network layout, as far as the ESX hosts are concerned, do not reside on the implementation of VLAN. He is the current approach of the network by the hosts:

-Each two NIC are grouped into 3 groups NIC

-Each group NIC is connected to two switches, for purposes of availability

-There are basically 3 different physical networks

The problem with the current provision is that almost all communications are limited to 1 Gbps.

Another problem is the issue of scalability not having a VLAN.

I take this window of upgrade, not only for vSphere upgrade to version 5.5, but also to try to improve the scalability and performance of the network.

One of the main goals is to get more than 1 Gbps on communications. Now, this is my way of thinking on this:

-J' I will consolidate the network cards in a group of 4 network cards and another of 2 NETWORK cards. This will give me a total of 2 Gbps on the network management and 4 Gbps on the other networks. QoS can be applied, giving different layouts, but I'm just trying to keep things simple for you (the reader)

As far as I know there may be several approaches:

    (1) use of Cisco Nexus 1000v: as far as I know, this isn't an option, because it requires the Enterprise Plus version, which is not an option ;(

    (2) creation of LACP aggregation not between multiple network cards and two switches: switches HP 2510, which do not support inter trunking switch so it can be done.

So, I find myself with a few, in my perspective two poor approaches:

    (3) create two standard vSwitch, subgroups of the Group of four of the NETWORK card into two groups of two network cards and connecting each vSwitch to a different physical switch. The issue of availability should be ensured on each of the virtual machines that contain two vNIC, one tied to each vSwitch. That would get me a rate of 2 Gbps.

    (4) I use single vSwitch for all 4 cards but, connect it to a single physical switch. I then configure the second switch as a watch only pass with the same configuration as the asset. This would require manual intervention in the case of the failure of the active switch, which would be very unpleasant.

This is the help that I need. Is that all that I'm missing? Is there anything else I can do to try to take advantage of our current infrastructure?

If you have done this far, thank you for your patience .

    Thank you all,

    Rui Santos

From a design point of view, one key rule is to keep it as simple as possible. You don't want to introduce the complexity of your environment. I guess it's only a small environment (the license you have and the number of networks, not not using virtual LANs). 1 GB network is already saturated? My approach to this is to identify where the bottleneck can be. Majority of the number with vSphere performance is in stock, not in the network. If you are really worried about the scalability of the network, the simplest approach for me is to enable a VLAN and allow circuits. You can then combine the 4 NICs in a vSwitch and let (route in port ID function) default load balancing policy do its thing.

    Just my 2 cents...

  • Confused.  5 of vSphere Essentials 'various assets '?

Bought vSphere Essentials trying to get the work of Vcenter Server Appliance virtual vmware.  When you try to license key returns the message that says "the license key belongs to a product that is intended for a different type of asset.

Yet when I have the decoding, it says "VMware vSphere Essentials 5 (unlimited cores per processor).   To which I replied "uh..." Yes?... and...? "

What is going on?  Thank you.

It runs vCenter but with a different license. With Essentials (more), you get 2 licenses:

-> 5 vsphere Essentials (more) operating licence (3 guests) on the host

-> vCenter Server Foundation (host 3) license for the vCenter Server

So, get hold of the other licence and you will see that it works.
