vCenter Server 5.5 compatibility with vSphere 4 hypervisor

I recently installed vCenter Server 5.5.0.5201 (with a Standard license valid vCenter) and I am trying to add the hosts to vCenter data center. I can connect successfully to the host but vSphere displays the following error:

"The host is licensed with vSphere 4 hypervisor. The license of vCenter Server edition doesn't support vSphere 4 hypervisor. »

Now I found the slot compatibility matrix and there clearly shows that vCenter 5.5 is compatible with all the way back to version 4 for ESXi. I must be missing something, can someone please clarify the question.

vCenter_Compatibility.PNG

I know that vSphere hypervisor and ESXi Server is essentially the same but vSphere hypervisor is the free version, so is there a difference that I know?

This happens because you are using a free license on the ESXi 4.1 key.

"The host is licensed with vSphere 4 hypervisor" means that it is a free ESXi. You will not be able to manage the free ESXi with vCenter.

I installed the package of 5.5 full vCenter server using the simple installation option and it includes vCenter server, single sign - on, Webclient vSphere, vCenter server and vCenter Server inventory service. All the the latter is installed on a virtual machine that is running Windows server 2008 R2 guest OS.

Whenever I try to open a session on the vCenter Server uses the vSphere client, one of the following error is displayed.

You can find Update Manager 5.0 in vCenter Server 5.0 installation package. Update Manager 4.1 can't handle the newer hosts.

  • Pass a vCenter Server ESXi to another with dvSwitch

    Hello

I am actually preparing a migration of vCenter and have a few questions.

I'm migrating a cluster esxi 5.5 to one vCenter to another. The esxi server are configured with a distributed VM networking switch...

now, I would like to know if I can export the dvswitch configuration and import it on the new vcenter disconnect and reconnect esxi for the new vcenter Server?

in it's kb article is also to bring all virtual machines to a standard switch: KB VMware: ESX/ESXi host with vDS passing a vCenter Server to another

what I really need to move virtual machines first to a switch standard or is - this just for safety reasons? because I bring the configuration real the new vCenter dvswitch so it would stay the same dvswitch configuration?

Perhaps it is - can anyone help me...

    Hello

I just wanted to say that you MUST first migrate all the dvswitch to the standard switch exchanges!

If you add the esxi with the distributed switch, the dvswitch disappeared and the virtual machines have no connection to network more

  • vCenter Server 4 as virtual machine by vSphere, ESX4 host

    Hello

I would like to ask if anyone has tried to do.

I create a virtual machine to run my vCenter Server 4 under a new brand, vSphere, ESX4, armed with other VM.

My question is, can I use vCenter Server 4 and the same vSphere, ESX4 host where the vCenter Server 4 is be managed host?  Is this possible.

I did this, but in the ESX and vcenter 4 installation guide his page 16 of the document makes it clear that: "the vCenter Server system is a physical machine or the virtual machine with access to a database taken in charge. The vCenter Server system must meet specific requirements. Also, make sure that the vSphere Client machines meet the hardware requirements. »

Here is the link to the document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.pdf

But if you plan to do that you have to ensure three points (shown in this link: http://www.vladan.fr/three-main-reasons-to-run-virtual-center-server-as-a-virtual-machine/):

    1. Disable DRS (level of automation of change!) for your VirtualCenter VM and make sure the document where the VirtualCenter Server (my suggestion would be the first area of ESX)

    2. Enable HA for the VirtualCenter server and set the boot at high priority

    3. Make sure the VirtualCenter server gets sufficient resources by defining actions

  • vCenter Server 5 install in a virtual machine or not?

    Hi all.

We have a health care environment small assisted living with a dozen sites/servers

A server has 3 VMw4 vms on it.

We received two new servers ESXi installed 5. They will host several virtual machines of Windows Server for most of the migration of the current VMw4.

I want to install vCenter Server 5 to manage.

My book of VMware by Lowe, he mentions that install the vCenter server in a virtual machine has limits.

It mentions cold migration, cloning and editing material are not available.

He also mentions the considerations with the help of a distributed virtual switch.

Ufortunately that he won't go into details.

But there seems to be benefits such as the backup server and fast food when you use a virtual machine.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

It is one of the common design decision. now VMware recommended is to use a virtual machine.

some of the benefits you can get are: -.

The vCenter Server system can be revived in a cluster of high availability of vSphere

VM resources CPU and memory can be easily resized. The vCenter Server system also benefits from vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) cluster workload balancing.

You can easily save or create a virtual machine as needed.

him as a physical Machine will be some disadvantages such as:-

To ensure availability, you must purchase and use additional software such as vCenter Server Heartbeat or a third-party clustering solution.

You must properly size the physical machine's resources.

You must have a separate system and use imaging software to take a snapshot of a physical machine.

  • Support for Windows 2008 R2 in vCenter Server 2.5 U4 and 4.0

I'll have no problem creating models in both versions of vCenter Server. The question arises when you try to deploy the model to the Customization Wizard help. Under 4.0, it immediately comes up as not supported (7 64 windows server). Minus 2.5 U4, there is no tag for Windows 2008 R2 OS.

Support for this OS will be released in a next update on both vCenter servers (specifically the Customization Wizard)?

Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 is not supported with vSphere yet but experimental and should be supported subsequently released but they're working on it. You can run the wizard of customization with Windows 2008 however, here's how the instructions http://vinf.net/2009/07/09/how-to-deploy-a-windows-2008-server-from-a-template-with-vsphere/

    Hello

I go to the construction of a new vCenter server to my upgrade to vSphere 5.  The server vCenter 4.1 existing will be decommisioned and a new vCenter 5 installed.  I will keep the existing SQL database however.

All settings are since I was on the existing DB?  I don't need to execute one of this batch of data migration tool file I do?

If you use an existing DB, you all that you need to do is create your ODBC connection, test it and install vCenter ' help and existing DB.  VCenter all the setting is preserved.

The existing DB is external to the vCenter Server Correct?

    Hello

Running View 4.6, I have 5 pools created by using vCenter1. vCenter 1 currently manages esxi1 and esxi2. The vcenter server is also shared with our virtual servers. My plan is to create a vcenter2, I would like to delete esxi1 and esxi2 from vcenter1 and add them to the vcenter2. I also need to delete vcenter1 view server connection and then add vcenter2.

I think that's not possible because according to the Admin Guide View page 14, it says remove a View vcenter server instance manager, you first need to 'remove all the desktios view that are associated with the instance of vcenter server '.

    any thoughts?

    Mike

If you use complete virtual machines, you must follow the procedure. - it is not a perfect solution and would be tedious work in the case of large pool with and ownership of the user.

    • The view manager, remove the the pool - he asks to delete Manager delete disc: proceed with the removal of the display manager only.
    • Now the pool configuration will be removed leaving all the VMS in vCenter server.
    • Now connect any new server for this server vCenter vCenter ESX Server.
    • Migrate all VMs esx new and new data store... (If the datastre even is pulled in new vCenter server you can probably cancel the registration of these machines virtual server vcenter source and enter destination vcenter server)
    • New to create a manual pool using existing VMs in vCenter Server new
    • If the old swimming pool is a specialized pool, take note of these assignments for VM-user and apply these owners users manually. There is the user interface options to proceed manually inside the inventory of the pool.

Pease be aware that your pool full clone automated in the old CR become a Pool of manual in the new Victoria Cross

    I hope this helps.
