License for vSphere Essentials 6, more

Hello

We have a client vSphere Essentials 5, more. If the customer wants to upgrade to version 6, they should buy some sort of license?

I had a look at the my.vmware account, but could not see any version 6 it.

If you have a Support and subscription current and active contract customer, you can upgrade to the new version free of charge.

  • Windows licensing for vSphere Essentials all Linux virtual machines running

We offer vSphere Essentials and Essentials Plus of application virtualization on a company that currently has 4 servers that run multiple applications under CentOS. The two products are very good values, providing important functionality at a reasonable cost. Yet, society of the end-user has some resistance to the required cost of Windows Server licenses. There is no Windows servers on this network. Even a minimal vSphere Essentials requires usually 3 Windows Server licenses (for the domain controller, vCenter server, and database server) and a SQL server license. Even when using standard licenses, the total cost of these is higher than the cost of the essential elements of vSphere. Other people deploying vSphere Essentials on Linux-oriented networks are finding ways to use a lower number of Windows Server licenses?

vCenter Linux would be an alternative in such cases, but this project seems to be stalled.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to the community,

If you're only going to do the virtualization of servers (not VMware View) the vCenter Server does not need to be a member of the domain, or you need a separate SQL Server for a small environment. The edition of SQL SERVER 2005 Express (included in the vCenter Server installation) is sufficient.

While a single license of Windows (more CALs) would do.

  • ESXi 4.1 Standard for VSphere Essentials?

Hello. We have two hosts with Esxi embedded 4.1 standard. We use local, non-shared storage, and soon we will not anytime shared storage.

In order to obtain cost-effective centralized managemend (right now I have to use separate Vi clients for each host), I was instructed to check Vsphere Essentials.

It looks like it may work for us as we only use not the more advanced of the Standard license options, however I wonder if I'll have to re - install Vsphere on my hosts in order to centrally manage, or if the console provided with Vsphere Essentials will centalized management of my servers Esxi pre-existing without changing my installation current Esxi... does make sense? My Vmware sales representative wasn't sure of what I would have to do.

    Thank you!

    PK

VMware binaries are the same for all editions, so there is usually no problem with replacement of the license key. However, with the embedded edition that you mentioned, I'm not sure. It's an OEM version specific provider ESXi or did you install the version of VMware? In the case of a specific edition of the seller, you can contact the vendor to find out if the license change is allowed/possible. If it is not possible to change the license, it should be possible to reinstall ESXi on the USB/SD device without problems for virtual machines. All you need to do in this case is to reconfigure the host (for example, network, NTP,...)

About centralized management, there is also no re-installation of the ESXi servers needed. All you need to do is deploy a virtual instance of vCenter Server (based on Windows or the Appliance vCenter) and connect the hosts to this instance. This can be done without interruption of service for virtual machines.

  • feature of vSphere API licensed on vSphere Essentials kit

I have a few doubts about the level of licesement to apply to our laboratory. We do snapshots via API against our stand-alone ESXi, so we need the "vSphere API' active feature. Is this feature included on the license "vSphere Essentials kit '?

    Thank you.

    Hello

all editions of vSphere paid has full access to vSphere API only vSphere Hypervizor free edition is limited to only read the API.

If you need backups through third-party solutions 3rd you will need API vStorage for the Protection of data which is also included

overall paid kits and vSphere editions.

  • Upgrade license on ESXi host for a Standard license for vSphere

On an ESXi host using the free version, I understand that to have it managed by our current Server vCenter (which is licensed to vCenter Server Standard 4) we must update the license on the ESXi host for a vSphere Standard license. First is correct in what I think? I know there is another option using the vSphere Essentials, but this only covers 3 hosts of what I read and we have 4 hosts ESXi we want to manage, and also we would prefer to have all managed under the vCenter server if possible.

Second, if it's true, it's as simple as putting in the new license key on the ESXi host, and then I will be able to manage through our current server vCenter (who also manage our ESX host)? Or it would be a full erase + install different version of ESX on each host?

    Thank you

you are perfectly right and it's as simple as that. Just enter the new key on the host computer through the vSphere client and add it to vcenter.

The standard license is the one you want.

  • Upgrade to vSphere Essentials

    Hello

We are running the free ESXi hypervisor. If we were to buy a license for vSphere Essentials, would we be able to upgrade to this license without reinstalling the hypervisor? Essentials ESXi hypervisor is or he ESX?

    Thanks for any advice,

Yes, the license key provides all the features, so once you apply the new key, features will be unlocked/locked by your license key product provides.

  • vCenter Server with vSphere Essentials best practices for small business

I hesitated to post this thread for fear of redundancy, but I wasn't able to find an answer in previous discussions.

I read the installation documentation for vSphere Essentials vCenter Server installation.

Is it a good idea to install vCenter on my ESXi host as a virtual machine?  I don't understand how the server can be installed as a virtual machine if she must always be on.  What happens when I do the updates of the hypervisor, ESXi (4.0 to 4.1)?  This would not cause the vCenter Server to disconnect?

Because I have Essentials, I don't have a HA and cannot migrate the server vCenter Server to another host as shown in the installation documentation.

    Thank you

It should not be a problem - if you manually perform the update using either the esxupdate or vcenter command vihostupdate does not at all in the game - if you use VUM he actually intitiates the vihostupdate order - when restarting the host to be reconnecting to vcenter once it is running.

  • vSphere Essentials 5 and vCenter Essentials - cannot add host - vMotion

I would like to know how to add a host to vCenter Essentials for vSphere essentials.

We bought vSphere Essentials and Essentials vCenter to improve our existing for Vsphere 4.1 Essentials environment.  Everything went well with the update on the host computer.  vSphere and vCenter allocated through the vSphere client license keys.  We installed vCenter and web client on a 2008 Server VM on the esxi host. The host has a number of existing virtual machines.  When attempting to add a host after have created the data center must be of VMotion.

Must the esxi host be empty when adding to vCenter essential?

    Thank you.

It sounds like you administering hosts in the mode of assessment so far and I tried some of the Enterprise Plus features! The Essentials Kit includes not vMotion (only Essentials more done) then you should remove the port vMotion group - if there is one - in the virtual network configuration to make the edition of Essentials-compatible host.

  • vSphere Essentials Plus 5

    Afternoon people

I have a client that I visited the other day and they decided to implement VMWARE ESX 4.1 in their environment, they use the following

    3 x ESX host servers

    1 x vCentre

    DRS

    2 x iSCSI without

    18 x Virtual Machines

They have installed this as a POC on trial, somehow, they decided to P2V all their live servers in the closed ESX and are now their operational infrastructure. The trial license will expire in 2 weeks and I suggested that they buy vSphere Essentials 5, more than it supports only up to 3 guests complete with DRS which is what they use. My question is the license that is provided by VMWARE buying easily transposable to the current configuration without the need to upgrade all systems? The important thing is now that they can continue their VMs operating system.

    Thank you very much

Yes - you will just need to apply the license on the vCenter server and they will be approved for essentials Plus-noreinstall rwequired -.

  • Cluster with VSphere Essentials

When I try to create a cluster with VSphere Essentials (no more) I'm offered HA and DRS (they are not greyed out, they are available). Are these trial versions that will be disabled in the future, or they are now included in Essentials?

My understanding is that they would be unavailable at all. that is, they would be gray.

To view your features under license:

    1. Open the vSphere Client and connect to your vCenter Server
    2. Select a host in your cluster
    3. Click the Configuration tab
    4. Click on the link "Features licensed" under the software

All licensed features are presented here. Search for "VMware HA" and "VMware DRS" see if they are allowed.

  • Use of the Resource Pool with vSphere Essentials

A silly question but I have to ask anyway:

I have a license of vSphere Essentials with my two hosts ESXi4.  I knew that he was not in vSphere DRS.  What was not so obvious to me, it's that you need DRS activated in order to create a pool of resources to the cluster level vSphere without it.  (The option to create a new cluster is grayed out). http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1004098

    So my question is:

Are there benefits to creating a cluster if you do not have DRS?  I now have to double and create pools of resources at the level of the host for two guests, who is an administrative burden.  In addition, one of the main reasons I have used resource pools was to facilitate the access rights based upon roles to specific virtual machines.   These two will now have to be defined for each host.

We greatly appreciate your comments on this

Other than the ability to use the VCA mode and setting up the location of the pagefile.  According to me, there isn't much more to a cluster if you use no HA or DRS.  Since you do not have DRS yor cannot create pools of resources that span multiple hosts within a cluster.

You will need to create individual pools of resources on each host by taking your host from a cluster and have just in the data center.

  • Migrate vSphere Essentials of ESXi (free)

I am running 2 physical hosts:

    -ESXi 4 (simple quad-core CPU)

    -Esxi 3.5 (double dual-core CPU)

with a handful of virtual machines on each physical host. Each physical host is currently using DAS but I hope possibly migrate storage iSCS and possibly add another ESXi server at any given time.

I want to take advantage of management features provided by vSphere Essentials (maybe more) but am a little unclear on what is actually needed for upgrade (?) to the essentials and what the structure of the network that results might look like at that time here. I upgraded on the spot or what I provide another physical host with the essentials for operational things?

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

Well nothing use the vSphere license and upgrade the license for the "free" version  That's it, it's now a licensed product.

If its ESXi 3.5, you just need the CD to ESX 4.0, run the installation, preserve the VMFS datastore, follow the prompts, restart is.  That's all.

  • Question of very fast licenses - vSphere Essentials Kits

    Hello

Can you have several Essentials and Essentials Plus kit by site?

That is to say - can you buy 3 x Essentials Kits for your site with 9 guests and build 3 VMs vCenter to manage each package of 3?

IE - if you use your first kit, you are eligible to buy a second for the next hosts a few in your company?

    Thank you

I'm not aware of a limitation for the Essentials Kits. The only one I can think of with a limit of one per site is an acceleration Kit.

Anyway, if you consider three Kits Essentials more, it may be useful to check if the benefits of vCenter Server more ESXi Standard licenses justifies the price difference.
