• Updated information on vSphere Essentials Kit

  Hi all, I have a few questions about the upgrade of an ESXi host (and soon two) free license in an essentials Kit 4.1 vSphere paid one.

  First question: do I need to reformat the machine (s) to upgrade or simply I can change the license key with the vSphere client?

  Second question: the statement "... means of solution for small offices to virtualize... three physical servers. "who, with the essentials kit I can use the same license with up to three physical hosts with no restriction on the number of virtual machines, I put on them?

  I ask because my plan is to divide my servers on two physical hosts and use a third as a machine of relief and emergency in the event of hardware failure, so a license kit unique essentials is integrate perfectly, but only if the included Storage API I would make backups while VMS are running and there is no restrictions on the number of physical host.

  The underlying OS is the same - the licesnse allows different features.

  No need to refpormat or re - install, you simply apply your new license and it's done.

• The ESXi 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade. -upgarde and best practices

  We are a small business with a single physical server, ESXi 4.1.0 installed with approx. 8 VMs. We plan on buying Essential Kit 6.0 ESXi because that's all we need right now. However, as VMWare says that 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade is NOT supported (matrices of the interoperability of products VMware), how we improve our host and VMS?

  I guess the correct way will be upgraded from 4.0. 5.5 U3 first, then to 6.0. However, if we buy the 6.0 license essential Kit, that we will be able to always download and install and upgrade of the host and all VMs to U3 5.5, and 6.0. Essentials?

  In addition, what are the best practices to upgrade a single host with multiple virtual machines? What I did research, we should back up important files from virtual machine, all critical data, etc. All recommendations are welcome.   As you said, you cannot upgrade host ESXi 4.x to 6.x, you must first upgrade 4.x to 5.x and then switch to 6.x

  Before moving to 5 or 6, make sure you ESXi host is compatible with ESXi 6.

  Check cheque and VMware hardware compatibility list if your server is listed.

  Although you'll have a 6 ESXi license kit, you can download ESXi 5.x and use it to upgrade process.

  Only if you need to use 5.x permanently, then you need to get your license keys downgraded to 5.x, otherwise once you upgrade host to 5.x, go ahead and level to ESXi 6.x

  Backup-

  Before you begin the upgrade, make sure that you have backup of all VMs critics.

  Either you can download/export all VMs as OVF, or you can use Veeam's free edition to make the backup of virtual machines

  -Update

  You can join the server ESXi ISO Installer and boot server form ISO and update.

  During the Installation process make sure to select ' PRESERVER VMFS and upgrade ESXi host '

  If you do not keep vmfs, all virtual machines will get deleted during the installation/upgrade process.

  Once you get ESXi Host upgrade to Upgrade VMFS 5.x version so that it can support 6.

  Then finally the ESXi host to 6.x upgrade, yet once make sure PRESERVE you VMFS during installation.

  If you have vCenter Update manager, use update reach the average upgrade easy it is to upgrade.

• The design of potential - thoughts?

  Looking at a updating of the material here and entertaining vSAN as part of the solution.

  Proposed solution:

  Two sites. Will use SRM with vSphere replication and vSAN.

  Consolidation to three ESXi hosts in the primary and secondary sites with Essentials more license kit. With the help of vSAN. The material is Dell R720xd servers filled with possible drive with disc magnets 12 24 bays to allow expansion. Either two or four of the 12 other bays on each host will fill with SSDs. Solution will build HA.

  Issues related to the:

  Can you jump on a 10GbE switch and interconnect between hosts 10GbE adapters? X 520 or x devices using Intel 540, would double on them and connect the hosts to another directly instead of buy two switches 8-port 10 GbE by the environment for redundancy.

  Whereas 12 x 600 internal GB 10K 2.5 "drives per host with SSDS additional 2-4 for the cache. What my useful capacity provides 1 failure to tolerate by VM?

  Am I missing any consideration here with regard to interoperability, etc.?

  Cheap is always subjective depending on what is the budget and what you are to compare.   The set of features is compelling for its price range.

  I wouldn't imagine you can ignore the switch with a host 3 VMware Virtual SAN environment, but I've seen other systems that work in a configuration of 2 host.

  SynchroNet did a performance white paper switch VSAN - http://www.synchronet.com/blog/vsan-switch-performance-whitepaper/

  The results show that you could get good performance with relatively modest network facilities.

  VSAN requires SSDs, they are not optional.  Each disk group must have a minimum of 1 SSD and 1 HDD (up to 7 hard drives by group).  SSD is used to read the cache and writing to the buffer.

  I would not use all records that were not on the VSAN from VMware HCL list. You want something with an endurance of write.  The recommendations are of life 5 years with 10 operations of writing per cell per day.

  The discs of the series intel s3700 are fine for this.

• vCenter Server Essentials

  I'm confused on what licensing "Kit Essentials" gives me to vCenter Server.  He start allows vCenter Server (SSO, web client, server) on a physical server dedicated outside the three ESXI hosts that are included with the Kit?  The free 60-day trial is super confusing because it unlocks EVERYTHING and does not really specify what I will remain once I applied the keys only Essentials.  I rather not would waste resources on my three ESXI hosts since I was a spare physical server that can host the server vCenter Server very well.

  The vCenter Server deployment option are the same as for all other editions. You can use the vCenter Server Appliance or vCenter based on Windows Server, you can install on a Windows Server to address physical or virtual system.

• Question of very fast licenses - vSphere Essentials Kits

  Hello

  Can you have several Essentials and Essentials Plus kit by site?

  That is to say - can you buy 3 x Essentials Kits for your site with 9 guests and build 3 VMs vCenter to manage each package of 3?

  I'm not aware of a limitation for the Essentials Kits. The only one I can think of with a limit of one per site is an acceleration Kit.

  Anyway, if you consider three Kits Essentials more, it may be useful to check if the benefits of vCenter Server more ESXi Standard licenses justifies the price difference.

• Essentials plus kit + vsan licenses

  We have a plan at 3 knots, but in 3 different places, accompanied by 10 GB. The idea is to have the failover seamless between the available with HA and VSAN to the storage nodes.  From what I understand much more kit will cover that and we must get vsan license on each receptacle for storage. Did I miss something, such as licenses of the limitations for this?

  I think you're right about the licenses.  Essentials more and vSAN licenses per socket, you should get the features you mentioned.

  all editions of vSphere paid has full access to vSphere API only vSphere Hypervizor free edition is limited to only read the API.

  If you need backups through third-party solutions 3rd you will need API vStorage for the Protection of data which is also included

  To start some tests, I bought a Dell r.620 server with two processors and 64 GB of RAM.

  I think buy just one license of VMware vSphere Essential Kit, just to test some features, management, and support provided by VMware.

  My doubt is: to support all the RAM (64 GB), I have purchase a license of the vSphere Essential Kit, or I need TWO?

  I'm a little confused on how much physical RAM memory on a single server, the vShpere Essential Kit can handle.

  OK, I know I can use a free version. But this test server will be transformed into a production server, and that the price of the vSphere Essential Kit is very good, I would buy it and start my test as a test of "production"...

  Hi Alex,

  Since you are doing a test on a single server so a Kit should be good at this point. In addition to Essential Kit do not fully support 64 GB of RAM so no need to buy two. Only the free versions have limits in support of only 32 GB of RAM.

• Kit with vsa license key more Essentials

  Hi, this should be a quick, I recently bought more essential kit, and I managed to install the ASB,

  However, the license key I received was only for essentials and vsphere essentials vcenter more processor license.

  It does not come with the VSA license key, I tried to enter the vcenter license key, it came out invalid, so currently use the 60-day trial.

  I'm missing something here? Where can I get the license key of vsa?

• Lab Manager acceleration kits / required licenses?

  Hello!

  We are currently using ESXi and plan to move to centralized test Lab Manager lab. The estimates are based on the acceleration kit that used to be available at about 4-5 k €, which seemed to include VI 3 licenses that are required for the Lab Manager to run on top of ESXi (or if whatever the basis ESXi does not support).

  Now I can't find the acceleration kits more 'Buy Lab Manager', instead I find licenses for Lab Manager only.

  Now I read everywhere that the vCenter is necessary and even messages that describe that vCenter foundation is not sufficient to run the laboratory Manager. However no official 'that's what you need to do if you want to get Lab Manager' running.

  To be honest, if the acceleration kits were gone for good, licensing begins to be as clear as some States large company in their regulatory policy, "must be this version of the database server", but do not worry to mention what license you need for the said server or background Windows server...

  I would like to know the price of 'minimum' (to continue) Lab Manager on top of bare metal, start-up costs and maintenance renewals when the initial support runs.

  With regard to reading, 2 or 4 processors as it seems to count.

  Sorry, that seems so difficult.  To sort through all of this:

  • Lab Manager requires ESX Standard or Enterprise.  It does not currently run on ESXi, but it's on the Roadmap (cannot discuss dates here).

  • Lab Manager 3 requires vCenter (Lab Manager 2 does not work).

  • vCenter Foundation is untested, but should work (but can only manage up to 3 knots).

  • ESX Foundation is not supported by the Lab Manager.

  • The laboratory director is authorized by the node (the server Lab Manager is free).

  • Lab Manager Server runs on Windows Server 2003 and can run on a virtual machine

  • VirtualCenter runs on Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, or Windows Server 2003 and can also run on a virtual machine.

  Thus, the minimum subscription is:

  • ESX Standard for two processors

  • Lab Manager for two processors

  • vCenter Foundation

  • Windows licenses you need for the Lab Manager server and VirtualCenter Management Server.

  Installing vCenter Management Server and server Lab Manager on the two virtual machines on this host ESX and use their local drive to store the virtual computer images.

  Such a system doesn't scale well, of course.  When you size, you will need to add the following:

  • Shared storage (NFS, iSCSI, or FC)

  • More ESX and Lab Manager licenses

  • vCenter Standard or Premium, instead of Foundation.

• CQ71 - installation of the recovery Kit

  Does anyone know if Win7 is pre-activated on HP Recovery Kit discs?

  I have a CQ71-314SA with problems of nasty virus that killed the system partitions and recovery, also my recovery discs have been scratched and are unreadable. To make things worse, the COA Win7 sticker is worn out and I can make only the ends of the license key for installation from a normal Win7 oem drive is not an option.
