Lightroom and external HD

I have Adobe Photoshop elements 11, first items 11, Lightroom 4, an external hard drive and a MacBook Pro, but I don't know where to start.

1. I wonder especially if I have to download the software on my computer and put my photos on the external hard drive (I thought it would be better to put my pictures on the external hard drive, as to save memory of my computer, but do not know if the software will be able to access photos here)?  What is the best Setup?

2. If the software on the computer can 'find' pictures on the external hard drive, essentailly photos are saved on my computer when I edit them with the software?  If so, it wouldn't slow down my computer (or is there a way to get around this)?

3. these programs (e.g. Photoshop, Elements, Lightroom) work together?  If so, how we configure them to do so and to use them in this way?

Thank you!

Programs should go on the internal hard disk, Lightroom catalog should go on the internal hard disk, photos can go on the external or internal, as you prefer. Lightroom has no problems to access photos on your HD Putting of external programs and other stuff on your drive hard internal does not use your computer's memory, it uses the hard disk space that is different.

Lightroom or PSE moves photos (unless you tell the program to do it). Photos on your external hard drive can stay on your external hard drive (unless you tell Lightroom to move them elsewhere). Changing them does not mean that they are now on your internal HD (by the way, putting stuff on your drive hard internal does NOT slow down your computer, until you get to the point where he very little empty space left on the internal hard drive)

PSE and Lightroom will work together, see http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80035

    Help the following dilemma:

I have a new computer and want to start again with Lightroom CC. I have Lightroom installed on my internal drive (iMac very fast 2015). I don't want my big RAW/DNG files on my iMac, but rather my external drive Lacie (7200 RPM).

Is this possible? Here's the workflow I think in my head,

    1. export photos of unit photo/player card on external hard drive
2 import photos from the external drive to Lightroom to generate previews only?
    a. a Lightroom Catalog and generate previews of the poor quality of the database
    3. all photos (intact) negatives remain on the external drive
    4 make changes

I am open for any workflow that involves having distinct images of my internal drive. Thank you all for the advice!

No, that does not create a copy of the file on your internal hard drive. The import process in Lightroom is simply one of showing Lightroom where your images. The images will remain on the external hard drive. If the internal hard disk space is a concern, you can also put your catalogue and your external previews folder on the hard drive. In addition, when you import import new images using Lightroom dialog, you can choose the external hard drive as a destination. Alternatively, you can copy the images on the external hard drive you have described in your original post, and then import them. Either way works.

  • Problem with Lightroom and external hard drive. Files and folders deleted.

In the classroom (8.1 windows computers) import us images that .dng files on an external hard drive using Lightroom.

After the Lightroom, insert us the memory card containing photos and attach an external hard drive. (formatted to ntfs)

We create a new catalog on the external hard drive and then create a folder as the destination for the images on the external drive as well.

After passing to the newly formed catalog in Lightroom, we import the photos from the memory card to the external hard drive.

Photos are present in the folder 'import' on the external hard drive after the end of the import, so checking with windows Explorer.

After the closure of LR and disconnect the external hard drive of the computer, it appears that the newly created files and imported files have disappeared.

We tested with an external hard drive in exfat. The same problem.

There is no problem when you copy directly in Explorer windows of memory card files to the external drive.

The files are not hidden. Tested on mac and windows.

If you said that the photo files are on the external hard drive when you checked using Windows Explorer during the class? Is this correct? YES
Then you go home and the files are not on the external hard drive? YES

Well, it is a mystery, but there is no way that Lightroom can be the culprit.

Is it the same for the catalog file, in class, he was present on the hard disk according to the Windows Explorer, and when you get home, is no longer on the drive? YES

Same conclusions, it is not Lightroom.

  • Lightroom cannot import photos from disk hard iMac and extern library

Using the trial version I can't import pictures from the library drive hard iMac and extern. Libraries are gray and do not react. Why? And what to do?

At present there are no plug-in to import the new photo App. If you want your photos to display any edition already made in iPhoto/Aperture/Photos, it is better for export versions to the desktop or create new folders in the Finder. Then import duplicates in Lightroom. You can also include IPTC metadata during the creation of new versions.

Recovery of DNG issue: I have photos stored on an external hard drive which have previously been imported into Lightroom and converted to DNG.  The laptop on which I was running Lightroom died and I had to replace the hard drive and rebuild the computer.  In the process of my Lightroom program and catalog related to these images have been lost.  When I re-associate these photos with my new installation of Lightroom and a new catalogue is there a way to retrieve the keywords or other changes or metadata catalogue Mountaga?  Is any of this information embedded with the imge DNG file or was it only in the cataloght lost on my failing hard drive? I re-import just as if it were new images with no prior treatment of Lightroom?

By default, LR saves all changes in the catalog, and that applies to any type of file.

Optionally, you can save changes to the file as well, for raw files owners, this will create a xmp file - for DNG that changes are going to be cooked in the file, without additional xmp file.

But it does not default. Go to the catalog and parameters under the control of metadata automatically save changes to XMP.

Unless you do this, the changes are saved only in the catalog.

    Hope this makes things clearer.

  • I have a macbook pro with only 128 GB of hard drive. I installed lightroom and all my photos on an external hard drive. Can I keep my library on the external hard drive also lightroom?

I have a macbook pro with only 128 GB of hard drive. I installed lightroom and all my photos on an external hard drive. Can I keep my library on the external hard drive also lightroom?

Yes. Find LR catalog file in Edit/settings/general catalogue. Close LR and go to this place. The catalog file is one that ends by .lrcat - move it where you want. Beside the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move, but if you don't not LR will generate new insights. Double-click the .lrcat file in her new home and LR will open with this catalogue. Set preferences in more recent catalogue.

  • lost my catalogs in my lightroom and backing up

I was using lightroom and had access to all my catalogs. then he got stuck when I try to synchronize and add new photos to the existing catalog.  now, all the catelogs disappeared and he only asks me to import or export thousands and thousands of images of my original photo files that I had already imported from.  I decided to plug in my back to see if it was different and the backup cannot find the catelogs either.  Furthermore, all my photos and lr are on a separate external hard drive.  tried to look for the disk on the computer and hard and can't find it.

    now, all the catelogs disappeared

What does that mean? How do you know they're gone?

Please do a search using the search function of your operating system, for all files whose name ends in. LRCAT and then open each found by double-clicking on it to see if it's the catalogue with photos.

  • Should I get rid of old files from Lightroom and start again?

I messed up download in Lightroom and about half of my photos and files "is not found."  While Lightroom has been deleted when my PC was repaired, so my I just downloaded again.  I want to download correctly this time. No pictures is currently in Lightroom.

I have the following locations of photo on my PC: my images, external hard drive (ED) 1 and (ED) 2.  All have bits of catalogues Lightroom etc (not the photo files can I open) on them.  I have a plan and want to know if it will work.

I'll make all my photos on ED1 outside of Lightroom.  I'll remove Lightroom from my computer AND delete the "bits" containing photos of all three locations.

I can download Lightroom again and download my pictures inside of ED1.  This way Lightroom will know where they are.

My plan will subsequently be to download all photos of ED 1.  (How can I configure this?)   I want to set up Lightroom to backup to ED2. (How do I do this?)

I would appreciate help as my previous attempts to solve the problem just make it worse!

I'll make all my photos on ED1 outside of Lightroom.

I assume that you know how to do it

I'll remove Lightroom from my computer AND delete the "bits" containing photos of all three locations. I then download Lightroom again

Completely useless. Open Lightroom, select file-> new catalogue and you will have an empty empty catalog to use. You must then import the ED1 photos using the Add option (MOVE or COPY, as appropriate)

My plan will subsequently be to download all photos of ED 1.

I guess you means importation and not download. In the import dialog box, select the option COPY and then under Destination (on the right side), you select the appropriate folder to import into on ED1.

I want to set up Lightroom to backup to ED2. (How do I do this?)

You can use the third-party backup software to achieve for the photos. You can use Lightroom itself to make backups of the catalog file (it is under the catalog settings).

Alternatively, you can tell Lightroom to make copies of your photos to ED2 to import, as explained here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/photo-video-import-options.html#back_up_photos_duri ng_import if you do this, you will still need to make regular backups of your catalog (via the option in the catalog settings) file

  • To move my photos in aperture to lightroom, first purchase and install lightroom, and then buy the plug-in?

I need to move from the 100's of thousands of photos of my Aperture library on my mac desktop and my external drives to lightroom.  First buy and download lightroom and then buy the plug and start the transfer?  I do a small sample first?   I lose all my files organization and my settings?  My pictures are not saved in RAW.

You can use the adobe 30 day trial software to make sure that everything works as you like before you buy.

  • Lightroom and issuance of dual display

I have a MacBook Pro and an external NEC MultiSync follow. I'm running on the latest Version of Yosemite. I keep my MacBook Pro as home base so to speak and the secondary external monitor. I used to be able to keep Lightroom as a floating window, and this feature seems to have disappeared. What's really frustrating is that if I make the wrong move with my mouse Lightroom winds upward on the other monitor. Sometimes I can get it to come back with a mouse, click on my laptop, but not always, so then I have to stop Lightroom and start again. This can be considered a matter of Apple, but here I have a problem with Lightroom. I got it with versions 5 and 6 now. Does anybody know the right way to deal with this.

    Hi, jiml1948

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand the question, but I thin holding down the SHIFT key and pressing toggle the F key to display different windows (including the floating window). I hope it helps.

  • Update to the cloud (Lightroom and photoshop) lightroom 5.7 already installed

    Hello!

How updates to the CC (lightroom and photoshop) if I already have lightroom installed 5.7 and I work my photos from an external hard drive.

    I have a macbook pro.

    Thank you

You should probably leave your lr perpetually licensed 5.7 only and do not install the lr 5 via your subscription of the cc.

but, if you wanted to, uninstall lr 5.7 and use the cc office to install the lr subscription

  • Lightroom and Mac

I just started using Lightroom. Try to migrate far from iPhoto. When I open Lightroom and open list folders, I don't see that my LaCie external hard drive and not my Macintosh HD or any other folder in the Finder list. I watched some videos of You Tube on LR and they all show the Mac HD and other Finder folders under the folder list. Why not on mine? Any suggestions would be helpful... It can't be this hard...

Click on the import button and try to import at least one photo of a folder in images.

Click Add in the import dialog box.

  • Moving files from lightroom on external hard drive

I read a few post on this topic, but I have not found the answers I'm looking for.

I want to take all the pictures on my computer and put them on an external hard drive.  If I'm in lightroom and connect my external hard drive, if I just move all files to a disc external hard takes them out of my computer?

In addition, I want to do is make a folder for each calendar year and the changes made to the photos.  So, if I save my project and move it over the pictures, this means that any changes I made on these photos will stay with these photos?

To have all my pictures on the computer, if I wanted to reopen a file from my external hard drive through lightroom, they automatically opens with all the changes always made for them?

Point 1: Yes, Lightroom will move from your computer to the outside. However, I would not recommend doing so, I copy the files from the computer to the external help for your operating system and when you checked the copy is ok and you've "updated the location of the folder" in Lightroom and then you can delete the folders on your computer.

Point 2: You can do manually in Lightroom using the sort options to reach the older that you want or craete a new catalog and import your current and the importing stage move files to folders by date order.

Point 3: Yes, it will be, but you won't be able to 'work' the files that are on the drive offline, unless you have generated clever insights.

  • HDR 32-bit with Lightroom and Photoshop CS6 problem

    Hi all:

Suite Adobe TV of Julieanne subject here-> t-hdr-images-in-lr-41/ http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-complete-picture-with-julieanne-kost/quick-tip-creating-32bi , a problem arises when you try to save Photoshop CS 6. According to Julieanne, you press ctrl-s to have the PS saves the HDR image and then it should show up in Lightroom. What I found is that hit crtrl-s record in a PSD file that automatically appear in Lightroom but Lightroom, but can not read. If I do a save as, and then select TIFF as the Lightroom extension will not automatically see the TIFF file. I need to synchronize the folder in order to have the Lightroom to import.

Why is that Lightroom automatically see a PSD file (which is of no use), and see the TIFF file?

Is there a setting in the PS that will change the preferences to save in TIFF format instead of a PSD file?

With the help of 4.2 Lightroom and Photoshop CS6.

    Thank you

    Terry

Go to the LR preferences > external Edit tab and the change set the top pop-up at TIFF and you should be all.

  • Lightroom and keywords

I am new to lightroom and can not figure out how to get my key words will appear on another computer.

I recently added files/photos to my catalog by import - only not actually add copy photos. the originals are all on an external hard drive. I entered the keywords/tags for photos and everything looked good.  Then I took my hard drive on my second computer, import the files/folders of same. I expect using keywords would be too, but they were not.

How can I get my keywords is displayed on my images from one computer to another?

    Thank you for your help.

Select all images in lightroom and press ctrl-s, you must save the metadata to disk hard so that other applications see the keywords, you added. You can then copy the pictures on another computer and when you import keywords will be available.
