Lightroom catalog cannot be opened. WHY?

My computer crashed. Lightroom is now ask me to re - enter the serial number of my software (I bought it before the set monthly subscription thing) and then telling me "cannot open the Lightroom catalog called"Lightroom Catalog"because is another application already open." I gives me the ability to "choose a different catalog", "continue" or "quit". There is no other catalog, I only have one created. I click on 'continue' and nothing DON'T get PAST. The message window will Flash, and here I am watching the same error message that gives me the same options to "choose another catalogue", "continue" or "quit".

WHY CAN I NOT ACCESS MY PROGRAM OF LIGHTROOM? HOW CAN I FIX?

It should be noted I tried clicking on the three options. "Choose a different catalog" simply evokes a directory showing what I already knew; that I don't have that one catalog. 'exit', of course, leaves through the window. I also shot to the top of my task manager to verify that no other programs/applications were running, so I don't know yet, I received this message from another application have my Lightroom Catalog open in the first place.

Help, please

It worked!
Simply by removing the file ".lock" with the same name 'error' catalogue spoke, I again was able to access Lightroom.

Side note: My mistake of 'catalogue' began to appear after my computer crashed as well.

Thanks for the advice everyone! penderra Hal P Anderson farriswlphotos

    Hi flylooper,

This seems to be a problem with this catalogue.

Launch of Lightroom with the command button and choose the option to create a new catalog

If you are able to create a new catalog, then go to file menu > import from another catalog > choose your main catalog to import data from.

Or, you can search for a recent catalog backup and verify if you are able to open that.

  • Lightroom catalog cannot be opened because it is open in another application already

Anyone have helpful advice as to why I can't get my Lightroom CC catalog to open because is already open in another application.

Looks like you are using LR 6 to open a catalog of LR 5. If that's what you do, the message would be OK asking you to confirm that you want to migrate your data to the new format for LR 6.

  • Catalogue Lightroom 5 cannot be opened because it is already opened in another application?

Leave the other copy of Lightroom before trying to launch. My choices are "Choose a different catalog" "continue" and "Exit".

There are no other programs running. Problem still continues with computer security products uninstalled. There is no catalog 'different '. This normally happens after an abnormal termination of Lightroom (ie. an accident).

In the directory where your catalog is stored will be a file with the same name as your catalog, but with the extension. LOCK.  yourcatalogname.lock.

Rename this file to something else and then try to start Lightroom.

  • Lighroom opens with a window telling me that the "Lightroom Catalog" is already open is not possible since I just restarted my computer?

Lightroom opens suddenly with a message "you already have open Lightroom Catalog. Close the other version of Lightroom? Never happened before, and master windows task says I have no other lighroom open?

The message says that you have an open CATALOG.

What this means, is that the last time you used Lightroom you don't close properly Lightroom and he left the CATALOGUE in a State "locked."  Maybe the computer crashed, or you just turned off?

    The fix-

First - find out where your catalog is stored.

Open the Explorer/finder on your site CATALOG and delete the file that has a name that ends in "... lrcat.lock."

Do not delete anything! Do NOT delete the file ending by "... lrcat ' (i.e. your catalogue with all your work!)

    Then restart lightroom.

The .lock file is a temporary file that is always created when you open a catalog with Lightroom, to prevent several users the same catalog to open at the same time.

The first thing to do is to check if somehow the permissions for the drive Seagate or any of its relevant folders/subfolders has changed somehow (an OS update maybe?)

I tried to open Lightroom and this message keeps popping up. I restarted and shut down completely my computer and that did not work. I uninstalled Lightroom and re installed several times and that has not worked. And I went in my task manager and closed all applications and that has not worked. I don't know what else to do. Using Windows Explorer, go to the folder containing the catalog, it is usually inside the images folder.

Delete the file that ends with the extension .lock. Do not remove anything else, now launch Lightoom.

I even tried to open it on the other computer and said the same thing. This is a problem with the hard drive? THANKS for any help!

    Lenka,

Easy solution: find the catalog of lightroom on your hard drive. It ends by ".". LRCAT. In the same folder, there will be a file named .lock. Remove the .lock file and then run Lightroom. Everything will be fine.

  • Catalog cannot be opened

Worked very well. received the following message: LR catalog named "LR 5 Catalogue" cannot open another application already has its opening.

Leave the other copy of LR before trying to launch.  ???

The catalogue may not close properly the last time you used it.

Go to your LR folder (the default location is normally photos)

If you see a file with the word LOCK delete it.

  • 'Catalogue' cannot be opened because it is too new!

Starting the catalogo I use usually I received the following message "the Lightroom catalog called"Lightroom Catalog"cannot be opened because it is too new to be used by this version of Lightroom. You want to select a different catalog? »

I use the same computer and the same version of lightroom.

You have 2 versions of Lightroom on your computer?  This message appears when you use an older version of LR (LR 5) to open a catalog created by a newer version (LR6).  Lightroom catalogs are not retro-compatible.

  • Lightroom: LR4 will not open - error unexpected opening catalog

I can't open LR4. I get an "unexpected error opening catalog. The catalog cannot be opened due to an unexpected error. "This has happened after the failure of an update to WIN7.  He restored the system to a previous version.  In doing so, he also returned LR4.2 to LR4.1.  I've seen other threads can open a different catalog, or create a new one.  The problem is that, once I go to "Choose a different catalog", I get the windows to the screen where I can choose my backup.  I select the backup catalog and click on 'open '.  The window disappears, but the window "Select a catalog" underlying LR shows still 1 catalog to open... my original catalogue.  The backup does not appear in the list.  (The backup is not a network drive, and it is not marked as read).

I then try 'create a new catalog', get the Windows screen, enter a new name and click "Save".  The same thing happens.  The Windows screen goes away and the window "Select a catalog" LR still shows the catalog of moose in the list.  So, I can not create or choose a different catalog.  I'm doing something wrong?

    Thank you.

Remember to re - install Lightroom.

  • Lightroom Catalog

Lightroom crashes as soon as I tried to save a file. I ended up having to shut down the computer, but when I rebooted and tried to open Lightroom, a window with the message "the name of catalog Lightroom"Lightroom Catalog"cannot open another application already has its opening". I have the ability to change to a different catalogue that allows me to open Lightroom, but I do not have access to my files! No other applications are open on the computer. Any suggestions?

Open the folder is your catalog. Next to the catalog file is a file with a .lock. This Trash and Lightroom should run again with your catalog.

  • Lightroom cannot use the catalog because it is not writable and cannot be opened

My catalog is on an external hard drive and I lost the connection, resulting in an error message "Lightroom can't use the catalog because it is not writable and cannot be opened" to come.

There was no lock file to delete, and I deleted the log file. All write permissions have been verified on the hard disk, catalog and subfolders and I leave and I always get this error message.

How can I get rid of this message and gain access to my catalog again?

I'm on windows and not Mac. Thank you for your time, but I have already contacted Adobe via a chat service and the catalog has been corrupted. They fixed. Thanks again for your time.

    Help, please!

I've been struggling for hours to open lightroom. My computer turns off without reason, and then I went back into the light room and had the following startup message:

Lightroom can't use the lightroom catalog 5 catalog because it is not writable and cannot be opened.

I tried everything I can. I searched online and you have deleted the files of 'locking' of the catalogue record. I did what is obvious and just rebooted. I checked the 'permissions' and nothing has worked. Help, please. I JUST finished images edited in 1000 and I need to export. I won't cry if I need to change their brand new

In your OS, the folder that contains your catalog must have read & write permission.

If you think that you already have, we show a screenshot so that we can see in the Explorer Windows/Mac Finder folder that contains the catalog file; and show us an another screen shot of the permissions on this folder.

Also, please check the catalog file in your operating system to ensure that it is not set read-only.
