Limitation of 1 TB VDR

Hi friends,

I heard that there is a limitation of backup destination VDR 1 TB. What does that mean? is that mean that total backups of all virtual machines should not be exceeded 1 to or VMDK to a single machine virtual 1 TB file size? I'm confused. Help, please

Thank you

Q. What are the maximum number of deduplication destinations and size of each destination?

Device a. each VMware Data Recovery may have to not more than two destinations of deduplication. It is recommended that each dedupe destination be not more than 1 TB in size when using virtual disks. When a destination disk is a CIFS share, it is recommended that each dedupe destination be not more than 500 GB in size.

In summary, total backups should should not increase more than 1 TB for a store, it's that you can have two stores 1 TB which is 2 TB of total space you can use for VDR to store backups.

VDR is not a complete solution for virtual computer backups, you can use veeam backup or symantec.

  • VMware VDR or VEEAM backup choice for backups and restorations of VM

    Hello

Can someone suggest the best solutions to choose from-VDR or Veeam Backup.

I know there are limitations with VDR as appropriate in the middle of small infrastructure...

My infrastructure is 1 VC, 4 guests. 50-60 VM in a cluster. and I usually tape backups.

    Thanks in advance.

You may ask why I need that? for example, if I have 3 disks for a virtual machine - C: D: E:, c: what is 20 GB contains windows OS and other two are huge disks and data (files I need) are saved by my TSM software. I would then backup that only the OS disk and the remaining disc are copied by TSM. I don't want to copy complete D: E:...

It depends on your backup strategy.

In my humble OPINION, I prefer to have a backup of the complete VM image... just to have a real "disaster recovery system. Of course only the system drive may suffice, but you need to document what other drives were present.

And don't forget that VDRS and Veeam (and another backup product) can operate in "extra" mode, so that new data is copied, not whole disk (except the first, of course).

  • VDR - vDisk greater than 1 TB

    Hello

We have a file server that has a greater than 1 TB vDisk. How is it possible to save this virtual machine with the limitation could only ride a maximum 1 TB drive on the device?

    Thanks in advance

    Brendan

vDR is not an appropriate tool for the backup of a disk which is that great. Even though the limit is 1 TB in a practice 1 TB is not a good choice as a backup destination disk. Less than 500 GB is a more appropriate choice and multiple 2 or 300 GB even better. If something were to happen that requires a vDR re cataloging a 1 TB drive that it can take days. I can tell you that re cataloging is not uncommon. In the meantime, you have no access to vDR. No replacement takes place. Long and short - find another tool to back up this disk.

  • vDR strengths and weaknesses

    Hello

I am assessing whether vDR would be a good choice for our environment. I have 200VM, but probably only need to save about 50-75 of them. My understanding isn't vDR backup products such as SQL or Exchange. In addition, cooking directly on upward broadband, according to me, is a limitation. I have to back up the disk to tape backup using our tape backup product (TSM). Also, since data would be on a CIFS share, I guess that it is not able to make free backup of LAN. Anyone like to share their experience with vDR? The price is right, since we are already a client company.

    Thank you

    Mike

In my humble OPINION, the vDR has several limitations for the company.

Could be enough for a small environment, but for large/XLarge is not scalable (and is limited on the number of virtual machines).

The stability of the virtual appliance is quite better (from v 1.2), but sometimes, the integrity check on destination CIFS is still a pain.

You cannot send e-mail to the success of failure (there is a hack, but it's not official).

Jobs and the programming are simple but very limited.

  • VMA and VDR should be updated?

I see the VMA and VDR running on RHEL5.2, means that we should update and fix them like RHEL-VM? Updated packages via yum, ip - limited ports, etc..

The device of the MAS can be changed using vima-update

The vDR is replaced rather than updated.

  • Why use a third upward on VCB and VDR

IM ready to go using eSxpress PHD, but I would like to know what are the benefits I would win instead of just using the VCB and VDR?

    > I still don't see no need to buy a product like the doctorate, when you have VDR built as part of your license...

If you do not see need - maybe there is no need for your environment. VDR has very limited functionality and is not suitable for my environment because:

    (1) I have more than 100 virtual machines, and I certainly don't want to keep 2-3-4-5 of VDR.

    (2) time to start the backup cannot be set to VDR.

    (3) Veeam (my favorite) can back up virtual machines directly to CF

    (4) Veeam can also make replication and use it for purposes of recovery after disaster site

    (5) VDR before 1.2 was produced quite unstable

To sum everything up: VDR is a simple backup for small environments. If you have special needs or your environment is greater than 200 solution backup VMs 3 rd - party is much better.

  • Unable to VM snapshot during the process of backup VDR

    Hi all

I have a feeling, it is perhaps a kind of oddity in vSphere, but hope that it is a problem with VDR. Basically I have a virtual machine with two drives on two separate data stores. Two data warehouses are formatted differently, one with files limited to 256 GB and the second to 512 GB. This weekend, I created a 300 GB vmdk on the second store, and this morning I noticed that the VDR was not able to take the shot to make a backup. Is it because the ability to snapshot is dependent on the first store of data that cannot cope with the new 300 GB drive? If so, is there a way to get around this?

    Thank you

    Dan

    Hello

your problem is that a snapshot will be saved in the standard working directory. Who is the directory of your first hard drive, which is located on a data store with the limit of 1 MB Blocksize and 256 GB of file. A snapshot of a 300 GB drive could be bigger than your filelimit and cannot be saved on your first data store. That's why the snapshot fails.

You have 2 options to deal with.

1 exclude the second form of disk snapshot process (in the settings of your virtual hardware - VM must be disabled for this)

    2. change the workingDir of your virtual machine, then the snapshot will be created on the second data store. Take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002929 how to do it.

  • VDR - circumvention of Destination of NFS

    Hi all

Is it possible to perform a NFS storage as a backup in VDR destination? I know that in the issue date, it is not possible, but if anyone has found a solution?

    Thank you in advance!

    Concerning

    404joe

    Hello 404joe,

The process is a little different. First of all, you must make the NFS share that you want to use as dedupe store a VMware data store. But this means that you cannot use the share for other purposes. It's important limitation. At the end of the day, you can use an NFS share as any other type of storage that can be used as data VMware store. VMware grabs the LUN/share, etc., makes a VMFS partition and vmdk can be stored on it.

I have no experience with Netapp, but from my point of view it would only make sense when you don't have a license for the export of the LUN iSCSI or FC. Maybe it makes sense from a performance perspective (I don't want to engage in a debate on the pro benefits and drawbacks of the different types of storage).

    1. create an NFS share on Netapp Storage equipment

2 to this NFS share a data store VMware (VMFS partition)

    3. create an additional vmdk disk in the virtual machine of the VDR unit properties

4 format and mount the extra drive with the VDR admin plugin

If you intend to use NFS, because you want to save the store of deduplication covering like this, I have to disappoint you. You can use a ROW for example to make backups on tape of deduplication store as described here http://communities.vmware.com/message/1505632#1505632

Another solution with an SMB share is described here http://xtravirt.com/xd10131

Yes, I too agree with the fact that this product is much too limited to perform backups with different options. Most well-known is "IT IS No. LEVEL BACKUPS of FILES' with VDR, but at the same time that you can perform on the file level restores.

  • vDR (1.1) and backup on a network share

    Hello

I want to install vDR backup on a network share, but wanted to understand the best practices for the network share and if it's OK for her, which will be presented on the virtual Center Server.

Also, if I wanted to copy this network share broadband (for storage on the site off the coast) is this OK. Anything to be aware off the coast?

I read a previous post and she suggested that I need to power of the vDR device, to ensure that the store of deduplication is not in use (no integrity checks / ongoing backups). Is this the case?

    Thank you very much

If I save the Windows share on tape, outside the backup of vDR

window still would be that I have to turn off power VDR or disassemble the

    Share?

Yes, because other non-backup operations can still function.  This can cause issues of contention between VDR data and the application copies the data from the store of deduplication.

Or, I was controlling access to the share (via command line /)

changes of the authorization) to allow access during the backup window, then once

the backup window is closed I remove permissions for vDR can not

    more access the share?

Interesting idea - I had never thought about this.  Theoretically, it should work, but we have never tried on in-house.

If I have limited access to the share on time would be the vDR go up automatically?

I don't think so, you will have to do it manually.

    (b) If a backup, health checks or deletions where progress before a

share has been deleted what happened to active employment? It initiates

When sharing is restored? Any chance of corrupted data?

There is always a chance that the VDR done at that point in time.

  • 1.1 VDR and large VMDK

I'm trying the 1.1 VDR in my environment but have not been able to find an answer to this on the forums or in the docs.

I have a guest Win2k8 in one of my data centers that has a 2 TB drive and a 1.6 to drive.

According to the docs, each camera VDR can only support two 1 TB dedupe readers. The questions are:

    (1) when you save the VMDK big two attached to the guest, will be the backup on the second disc of deduplication tape, when the first is full?

    (2) I guess I will need two separate devices for VDR to save this virtual machine (one for each reader comments), is that correct?

    (3) is there a way to bypass the 1 TB limit, or would this cause performance / stability of data issues?

    (4) I know that some are of the view that the Active Directory domain controllers should not be taken.  This virtual Win2k8 machine is a domain controller.  Any of you feel you could be a particular concern for the initial backup full?

    Thanks in advance,

    VEEI

    #1: No.

#2: not necessarily.  To and 1.6 to 2 disks are full?  If they are full, the, little probable that you will be able to save them with VDR given destination disk limits

#3: the 1 TB is a soft limit based on tests we did.  Note that this assumes that the destination disk is a vmdk.  Note that the data store for the destination disk VDR must have the size of VMFS block (or longer).

#4: I'll let the other carillon on their experience with DC/snapshot backups

  • Function of more limited rotation on imac than the iphone!

I just realized that the edit > function of rotation is more limited on Photos/imac compared on my iphone.

It is surely not good! On my 27 inch screen it only allows me to rotate 90 degrees, but on the iphone I can adjust to any angle that I wish, and it also gives a grid to help align things.

Maybe it's a setting I'm missing - otherwise I find it's a huge gap for not being able to properly rotate the photos on my imac.

  • iCloud Sync Limitations

I have two questions (so far)

    1. I have sync had the records office and Documents on my MacBook Pro, but I can't go on my iMac, because (to quote the error message) "you have too many files, too many files in a single folder, or too many folders nested in your Documents or files from office."

I have a lot of capacity iCloud passing, after having updated in advance.

Does anyone know what the limits are or where to find them?

    2. what happens if you have the same name of folders on two Macs and try to synchronize the other?  for example if you have the same software installed on both machines you might have a folder of Documents/Adobe on each example.  If a folder is renamed automatically, I fear that it could affect the application next time it is run.

For your first question, I do not know what are the limits, but what happens if you were to move some items from these folders and subfolders?  Which would be then able to synchronize your documents easily?

    Help...

You shouldn't be messing with the security features of the operating system.

Problems may have to do with the network, or client software that you use.

I start by making sure all the software are updated and then create a new entry, vpn, double control system that everything has been entered correctly.

FWIW, I use the built-in features of VPN on El Capitan to connect to my University regularly and without problem.

I'm not familiar with "Fortinet", and I suspect that you may need to be updated, or simply use the built-in VPN.
