Linux host - bridge problems

I have a host of Linux (CentOS 5.3) running VMWare Workstation 6.5.1 and I wanted to install a bridge connection so that my comments to Server Windows 2003 is able to directly access the internet and receive queries (such as remote desktop). Now correct me if this is not possible, but I have several IP addresses on eth0 and I try to get my W2k3 guest to have a dedicated IP address located on eth0: 1 or eth0:2. Bridge work not at all it seems. I tried to use vmnet0 and W2k3 is not able to get an IP address. I also tried directly affecting the packed network adapter, and that does not work either.

I tried to configure a network card of vmnetx with one of the public IPs that I want to use, but it does not work. NAT works fine, but I can't access the server from outside of the host, is not all that attractive to me. Here is my output of ifconfig:

# ifconfig

Have you tried simply configure connection bridged your W2003 guest with one of your public IP (static), with appropriate gateway, DNS, etc.?

  • Access to the network bridge works do not (Linux host & comments)

I am running VMware Player 3.0.1 on Fedora Core 10. (I know this is not one of the host of the OS supported; could this be the problem?)

I built a virtual machine with a virtual adapter connected by a bridge and am under Fedora Core 10 also in the virtual machine. The virtual machine does not have any network access.

    I followed all the advice of troubleshooting to the Knowledge Base article 1008367 (at http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1008367 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 77717080 & stateId = 0% 200% 2077715760) does not.

On the Linux host, vmnet-bridge is running.

    / dev/vmnet0, / dev/vmnet1 and/dev/vmnet8 all exist.

However, the Configuration GUI network (under GNOME) lists vmnet1 material devices, vmnet8, eth0 (it's my actual physical network interface), and the so-called pan0.

On the virtual machine, I think I have configured the network correctly.

ping an address on my LAN IP said "the network is inaccessible." (The same ping succeeds on the host).

Clues to understand why the network access doesn't work?

    Ok

Start by checking that the Fedora 10 vNIC is connected on the audit: VM configuration-> network adapter Bridge-> Connect at power on (must be verified).

So when the guest of Fedora 10 begins the vNIC should be upward.

If the eth0 is not upward, you should be able to install and configure then. You can search on the net how to set up the network on a host of Fedora 10. I recommend that you use just the console text to do so.

Don't forget to configure fedora network depending on the configuration of your LAN (static or dhcp).

Let me know if it works or not

    Best wishes / Saludos.

All this leads to the issue of not being able to access the internet from within my Windows guest.  I can ping the host computer, but I can't access the internet.  I'm not sure of what could be the problem.

I pulled up to the parameters of the virtual machine window (Ctrl + D), selected network adapter in the list of devices and changed the ball from NAT to bridged. After you save the settings, I booted the machine virtual Windows has detected a new network adapter, and after you configure it, I am able to access the internet.

  • moving from windows to linux host host

Does anyone have any experience with workstation pro 12 comments mobile from windows to a linux host computer host?

If Yes, can it be done?

    Thanks for your time.

    Hello

Yes, this is no problem at all.

Your VMS even will run on a Linux machine as they did under a windows host.

The only problem is that if you link to a resource that explicitly is windows-only.

For example. A share under a numbered car won't work, or not a cdrom on D:\

Your VM will indicate on startup. BTW, when he asked 'have you move or copy' then choose 'move' otherwise your virtual hardware will get new hardware ID and for windows which means triggering activation.

    Hello

OK, I did some download and testing yesterday and today and I found a tool chain that strives to do remote debugging a c application / c++ on a sbRIO-9651 with CentOS 7 host operating system.

You must download this Linaro Toolchain for Cortex-A

Once on the page go in the section "Linaro Toolchain for Cortex-A" and download the second link linux "linaro-toolchain-binary (big-endian).  The binary gdb is here, so you must point towards him in the Eclipse debug configuration.

You may need to install the library added to your operating system.

After the system restarts, HPLIP load in the system tray. Although the printer is installed and configured in the KDE system settings, it does not show in HPLIP or Manager HPLIP of devices. Why doesn't the HPLIP printer?

I found a few things to check to make sure that HPLIP works well.  First of all, remove all printers which has not setup failed.  Also, make sure that the HP printer didn't need to be redefined to allow wireless communication.  Then make sure that the installation routine performs through the configuration of the wireless connection.  It should work reliably after that.  Do some tests, then resart your computer and scan something else.  I used playing cards...

  • HOW TO GET THE LOGIC OF A LINUX HOST DISKS, TO CREATE RULE

I need to create a rule to monitor some logic to a linux host, not all discs.

    Thank you!!!

You can use a scope query something like this:

    LogicalDisk where name = '/ etc '.

    or

    LogicalDisk name in {' / ', '/ etc', "foglight"}

    or

LogicalDisk where name match '. * tc.*'

    or

LogicalDisk where name like '% tc % '.

You can extend this to only certain hosts with something like this:

    LogicalDisk where name = '/ etc' and monitoredHost.name = 'abcdef1234.domain.com. '

  • Network host connectivity problem

    Hi all
I have a bit of a strange an ESXi 5 U1 host connectivity problem. The host has a network card in the 10.0.0.0/24 subnet, and from there it can ping both devices but cannot ping to two other devices. To explain a little better:
There are two hosts with identical hardware (HP ProLiant DL380 G6) both built with the same picture of ESXi 5 U1 from HP.
There is an IP address on the switch (Cisco 3750 gigabit) management.
There are two servers running Openfiler, which I'll use for ISCSI data banks.
All these devices are in the same VLAN in the 10.0.0.0/24 subnet. host 1 is identical to the 2 host configuration (bar IP address and host name, etc.). Host can ping all devices on the subnet 1 and maybe ping by all devices on the seubnet. 2, the one with the issue of the host can ping and ping the Cisco FoxyCode and host 1, but cannot ping or ping by one of the two boxes openfiler.
Research on the openfiler boxes I see missing entries in the arp (marked as incomplete) table. Host 2 he entered complete arp for the openfiler boxes. A trace of the wireshark package shows the openfilers sending arp requests but no response from host 2. The Cisco and host 1 to get the answers.
I have patched the critical fixes host 2 until the last critical and no, applied the latest versions of firmware HP etc. Swapped, cables, tried different switch ports and even different NICs on host 2, all to nothing does not. The Cisco ports configured all identically from host 1. The openfiler boxes are set up with interfaces servile and the Cisco switch ports are etherchannelled for these. There is no etherchannel or link aggregation etc for guests, straight connection to the front in the VLAN.
Interestingly, all devices also has an interface in the 192.168.2.0/sous-reseau 24 for management and all devices can see all other devices here absolutely fine.
If anyone has any ideas on where to go from here please let me know, I'm going crazy trying to understand this one!

I wonder if the Etherchannels in Openfiler servers might not work. Depending on how the switch load balances executives, this could cause a host to work and the other is not.

  • Personal project: convert with VM Linux host to vSphere Hypervisor

    Hello

I have been using VMware Workstation for some years both for personal and professional purposes.

I would like to convert my Linux host with multiple virtual machines to vSphere Hypervisor server with all my existing virtual machines and data.

I currently have a Ubuntu 10.10 desktop on which I run Workstation 8 to host multiple virtual machines to Linux as a WebSphere Portal cluster (LDAP, DB2, ND, Portal 2 nodes). I also use it to host a VortexBox VM that contains my music collection. The audio files are not in the hard of the VortexBox, but are accessed through a sharing of the host folder. I have also several years of photos and documents on the host system.

    The material consists of:

    Motherboard Asus M4A785TD-V

    Corsair XMS3 16 GB

Intel PWLA8391GTBLK PRO/1000 GT Desktop Network adapt

    1 x Hitachi 1 TB (empty)

    1 x Seagate 160 GB (photos, video)

2 x Seagate 300 GB (Ubuntu, music, data, VMs)

I am very new to vSphere. What I did was install vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 5) on a USB 8 GB on the above system and created a store of data of the 1 TB drive.

I also installed vSphere Client on a virtual Windows XP machine running on my MacBook; that I used to create the data store.

Can someone provide measures of high level on how to proceed?

I have an external hard drive on which I can copy existing virtual machines to deploy to the host of vSphere through Workstation 8.

My main concern is the best way to keep my collection of music/photo/video to make it accessible by the VM VortexBox.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    Miguel

' Copy the VMs convert to another system so that I can deploy to the area of ESXi? Or is there a way to locate the VMs converted from the ESXi host (via vSphere Client) and deploy? »

ESXi must work so that the converter convert and move them to ESXi. Since it is the same dialog that VMware Workstation works on, it would mean that Ubuntu and workstation are turned off. You convert the raw files to workstation (which takes care of the tool). This will probably mean temporarily copy workstation virtual machine files to a temporary location.

"What is the advantage of the use of VMware Converter instead of use the VMware Workstation 8 to download the virtual machines on the ESXi host?"

Eventually no matter. But remember that since ESXi must be executed, you can have the two ESXi running AND Ubuntu/workstation at the same time on the same box, so in your case, wouldn't be able to do this. Another option exports all the VMS to the models of the FVO (for an external HARD drive), and then once ESXi is running, import the OVFs.

"I like the point that do you on a VM file server. If I decide to implement this option, I would be able to connect to the existing hard disks on the ESXi host without having to reformat, to preserve my data (music, photos, videos, docs, etc.)? Any recommendations? "

Although it is technically possible to have a linux format hard drive visible to virtual machines (such as a ROW), it is very unusual and massively overcomplicates things. The best thing to do would be to move the data on the hard drive temporarily, format them as VMFS data stores and then only move the data back ontop readers in a virtual hard drive. To do this way, you get all the benefits of virtualization (eg. being able to easily move this virtual hard disk on different volumes and attach easily to different virtual machines, etc.). It's a little pain in the short term, but the long-term gain.

«I'm assuming that a VM file server would be different from a NAS VM, as I have to format disks in file system regardless of the SIN in the SIN prefer (I saw a YouTube video describing FreeNAS).»

A NAS and file server are essentially the same. There is nothing more an operating system that data sharing. They all use the same protocol for sharing (samba, CIFS, iSCSI, etc.), so it does not matter in general. But yes, typically performance based most NAS on Linux OSs, so yes, it's finally sitting on a file system (ext2/3/4) of Linux. Which shouldn't matter however, as long as your other machines can access the data. If I were you, I would buy a consumer NAS (which will offer more storage and can be extended), or configure a simple VM (like FreeNAS or other) and just give him a big a VHD.

  • Install vmware tools on the linux host offline

    Hello world

I run a Fedora 10 VM using vmware player 3.1.2 on a crowd of Ubuntu 10.04. I'm trying to install vmware tools, but my host doesn't have access to the internet.  I've seen a few posts on how to install vmware tools offline on a windows host (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/245195), but the advice given may not be valid for linux hosts.  I downloaded vmware-tools-linux - 8.4.4 - 301548.x86_64.component.tar of http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/ but this tar file contains a .component file (not an .iso that post said).  My question is what I should do with the .component file to install vmware tools?

    Thanks in advance,

    -Jordaan

    Hi Jordaan,

    Welcome to the forums.

    Try the following:

    -Unzip the downloaded file

    "vmware-Installer-install-component = xxx.component.

    Good luck.

  • Frames extended on linux hosts

We frames configuration throughout all our network settings and have it work.  The interesting thing and my question of why:

On linux hosts (all that I tested) and same vmxnet3 if the MTU is set to 1500, s 9000 host ping works fine.

Is this normal?  There is no need of ifconfig eth? mtu 9000 on the hosts as in the physical world?

    Packets are probably be fragmented.

Try a "ping s 9000 - M x.x.x.x" to not address the no fragment bit.  Also, try the ping command with a packet size of 10000, if those who work very well, the packets are fragmented.

    I hope this helps!

I have VMware server 2 on a linux host that is fortunately supporting a windows 2003 server that was installed after the converting of a physical machine.

I am trying to install a second server Windwos 2003 CD as a new installation, after seting the machine the web UI I start and get:

    Installation of Windows

    ============

File acpi.sys caused an unexpected error (32768) 6186 line in d:\srv03rtm\base\boot\setuo\setup.c

    Press a key to contiune

I don't see what to do and a google and search the forums does not help.

    Clues?

    Hello

    Check your installation CD.

Try to make this CD image and run your VM to ISO image installation.

  • Install Linux host - need to install some 1st time help

I am trying to install "Server 2.0.1" on a Linux host (Kubuntu 9.04 'Wild'). I have reviewed the user guide and install the docs, but need jump start information so I can go.

    1. after installation of VMware server, install the Windows XP operating system together?

    (a) install the Windows XP operating system using a virtual machine console

    -OR-

boot from the Windows CD and do a bunch fresh duel b) install along side Linux?

    -OR-

    (c) is it better to have Linux and Windows OS is installed before installing VMware Server?

I probably have more questions, but I will stop here until I get some advice on how to proceed.

    Thank you!

You can do everything above - normally, I would say to do a clean hd and partition it if you have what you need for the two operating systems - or use a tool such as Partition Magic to calve until you already have (if you do not want to go back to a clean slate).

The benefits are that each OS can see the equipment (and use) it's own - so multimedia will be better - but you have to devote resources in advance.

You can have Linux and XP installed with the server at a time, running the opposing OS... which is a bit random!

  • How to change the virtual IP addresses in 6.5.1 on the Linux host?

    I am running Workstation 6.5.1 on a 64-bit Linux host (Fedora 10).

The application of "Virtual Network Editor" is distinguished by its equivalent in Windows.  It is quite reduced in functionality.

What I need is a way to change the virtual IP addresses.  In the editor, I can only change the overall range of subnet (network address and the sous-masque).  It works very well.  However, I can not change the individual IP addresses in there.

In particular, I need to change:

    .1 = the host itself

.2 = services internal VMware (server proxy DNS, router, gateway, NAT, DHCP etc.)

How can I assign these on Linux?  Pour.2, I saw the "nat.conf" file in the directory/etc/vmware, under the number of the device (in my case vmnet8) vmnet.   Pour.1, I've seen this in a number of places, the DHCP server, and others.  Where does get this information from VMware?  What I don't want is to have to change this IP address in many places, because it will become easy to get out of sync.

If I just use "ifconfig" to change the IP address, it is an approach of brute force that works, but of course it will not survive a reboot.

Traditional networks of the host Linux tools are unaware of the vmnet addresses.  Somewhere, they are configured with VMware, not the distribution of the host.  So, I wonder where it is.

    Thank you!

    Josh

    Josh,

Here is what I do on my VMWare Wks 6.5.2:

    Files to edit:

    1 /etc/vmware/vmnetx/dhcpd/dhcpd.conf

    Change the following:

    (a) range

    (b) option domain-name-servers {10.10.10.254}

    (c) {10.10.10.254} option routers

    2 /etc/vmware/vmnetx/nat/nat.conf

    Change the following:

    (a) {10.10.10.254} ip - address of the NAT gateway.

    3 /etc/init.d/vmware script

    (a) check a function called vmwarestartvmnet()

    (b) after the/vmware-networks - the beginning of the line, add:

    ifconfig vmnetx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx {ip host address we want to}-> vmnet1 ifconfig 10.10.10.253

This works perfectly for me. The only thing is that, once you change these files, make sure that you get a copy of them. Otherwise after any update or configuration change who will be overwritten.

I hope that VMWare will come with a better way to do that instead of hacking these files manually.

    HTH,

    -Daniel.

  • 9 workstation crashes ugly on ASUS P8Z77 - V Pro based machine, Linux host

I tried to solve this problem for the last five days does not. I posted a video of the accident, tests, newspapers and all the details here: http://www.kevindanenberg.com/vmware/

Basically, seconds after I start a guest computer (any OS), the home screen turns off and restarts the host. This happens after a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 64-bit on the host computer and several other flavors of Linux (see the link above for all the various events...) This happens with Workstation 9 as a player.

It seems related to the material, because Ubuntu 12.04.1 64-bit works on a clean installation on an old machine very well.

    Material in question:

    ASUS P8Z77-V Pro

    Intel i7 - 3770S @ 3.10 GHz

    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16 GB (4 x 4 GB) F3-12800CL9Q-16GBXL

WD Black 1 TB (ATA WDC WD1002FAEX-0)

I disassembled the machine as bare as possible test.

I put in a request for support for VMWare and someone tries to help, but they did not understand anything or out again.

    Any ideas?

I suspect that it is a bug in Workstation 9 about the SMEP on Ivy Bridge systems.  If so, it only affects the virtual machines by using the binary translation.  The bug should be fixed in version 9.0.1 workstation.  In the meantime, you should be able to work around the problem by asking specifically VT-x/EPT as the preferred mode - assuming that VT - x is enabled in the BIOS.
