Maximum of storage for the data store?

Hello

I have a server configuration with a hard drive 2 TB Raid 1 mirror set. I installed hypervisor on it without any problem. When I go to configure a virtual machine, I can't put the main virtual C drive beyond 256 GB or 0.25 TB. A few reasons why this is happening?

The drives are SATA.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hello

because you have formatted your VMFS Datastore with a block of 1 MB, which will result in a maximum size of 256 GB.

Reformat your VMFS with a bigger unit.

  • VMX file larger than the maximum size supported by the data store

    Hi all

I seem to be getting a strange error trying to a virtual machine that is located on a snapshot VMFS5, to the data store format.

The virtual machine (VMDK and VMX file) is installed on a thin provisioned 2 TB datastore which has the value VMFS5 formatting.  It is a data store new with no other VM on it.  I had problems in the past with the datastore block sizes (1 MB, 2 MB, 4 MB, 8 MB on VMFS3), however, I thought that VMFS5 got rid of the question, since it's all blocks of 1 MB and all files in the virtual computer are on the same data store.

The error I get indicates that the VMX file is too large for the data store (used Im saying "unspecified file), however, if I do the independent 2 TB disk snapshots through the fine.  The virtual machine has two virtual disks, a 50 VMDK of GB and a thin 2 TB VMDK (200 GB used).  I tried fast vMotioning the VMDK and VMX to other data formatted VMFS5 stores and still get the same error.

I'd appreciate any help and ideas.

    Thank you

Although the block size limit is party, maximum 2 TB file size less 512octets still exists. Since a Flash disk can grow waist put in service the basic disk more overhead for the metadata, the maximum size of virtual disk - to be able to create snapshots - is 2032 GB.

  • < Unspecified file name > file is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store ' < indeterminate datastore >

    Hello

I use vSphere4 and I'm having problems, create snapshots of virtual machines.  I get the following error when I try and take a snapshot...

    File & lt; filename not specified & gt; is larger that the maximum size supported by the store data "& lt; not stated the store data & gt;

If I check all disks assigned to the virtual machine, the block sizes are ok.  All the disks are of block size of 1 MB and less 60GB, except one that is 600GB and a 4 MB block size.  There are also free space on each data store with being less 5,30 Go which I guess should be much more than enough to create a snapshot.

In addition, whenever I try and create a snapshot, it creates a file called SERVER - Snapshot1.vmsn, 2, 3, 4 etc. on the main data store.

Is it possible that because of the single disc of 600 GB, VMware prevents me from taking a snapshot?

    Here is the config...

See the attached file for disk configuration information.  Operating system drive is the drive where the snapshots are created.

Basic disks refers to all disks assigned to the virtual machine. Given that, by default, the snapshot is stored the vmx file, this data store should be able to potentially create a VMDK your largest disk size, assuming that you change every block in the vmdk.

In your case, it should support a snapshot that can potentially reach 600 GB to one of your drives, and so needs a block of size on the VMFS volume to support this. You can redirect the snapshots to another logic unit number and so to work around this problem (Storage VMotion is another option) limitation.

Trust, this clears up a little.

  • Snapshot error (.. is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store)

    Hello

I have a standalone DL360G5 with local storage. I have about 1.1 TB of storage (free in storage 1 TB)

I have a virtual machine that is configured with a provisioning (256 GB of storage) which is currently 14 GB. He should get a site off backup server.

When you take a snapshot of the next error message.

    'File '.

The error message doesn't make sense because it takes only 14 GB of storage, and since I'm more Quen free 1 TB of storage should not be any problem.

Someone knows how to solve this problem or to get a work around for a snapshot?

    Thank you

I think that you will need to reformat the data with a block size store. By default, the maximum is 256GB. Slim doesn't help here as a snapshot could grow beyond.

  • < unspecified file name > is greater than the taken maximum size supported by the data store ' < indeterminate datastore >

    Hello

    I made a mistake.

Block size was set at 2 MB, vmdisk 500 GB value has tried to bring to 600, do you have a message that it was not possible. VMDK was set to 512 GB after that operation is completed. The server is Windows 2003. the 11 additional GB, which is not allowed is visible to the guest OS. But I have not developed the partion with diskpart.

The problem is that this snapshot of the operation failed. This is an easy way to decrease the vmdk to the original size of 500 GB (if possible without turning off). Without destroying the files.

    Thank you very much

Solution 1 works if you have a second data store with the appropriate block size (4 or 8 MB)

Solution 2 - as you said - requires additional disk space and stop times

A possible solution (3) would be an upgrade to vSphere 5 allowing - after the upgrade of VMFS-5 data store - virtual disks with up to 2 TB less 512octets regardless of the size of block that exists. However, you must ensure vcenter Server as well as guests, access to the database are upgraded before the upgrade of VMFS data store. Also make sure that any 3rd party applications (eg backup) you use, support vSphere 5.

Since you mention a LUN to Solution 2, I assume you are using a shared storage. You do not have the opportunity to present a different LUN for guests, that you could get in shape with the block of adequate size and then cold migrate the virtual machine to it?

  • Increase the volume for the data store

    Hello

    Someone recognizes this problem?

When you try to increase a volume of data store in vSphere4 we get the following message: "error during the configuration of the host. Failed to get the disk partition information.

We use a MSA2324 of HP storage as a storage (data store) to our servers of vSphere. I increased the volume of the utility interface HP Storage manager 1.5 TB to 2.2 TB. So far so good. But when I try to increase the datastore in vSphere, this error message occurs.

I've done this before, but now it doesn't seem to work. We have 25 active servers attached to this data store. I REALLY want to increase this volume online. It will probably work if I stop all virtual servers, restart the server VSphere and then increase the volume.

    Concerning

Maximum supported LUN size is 2 TB minus 512 b.
