Maximum size VMDK file

Hi guys,.
I know what is already online

1. The maximum size of VMDK supported on a datastore to VMFS-5 is increased to 62 TB. However, the maximum size of VMDK supported on VMFS-3 still is 2 TB. Size maximum a VMDK on NFS support is the lesser of TB 62 and 1% less than the maximum file size supported by the NFS file system.

However in my vSphere client, I get different information is there someone who can confirm 1000% what is the case. I use

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 build-1746018

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 Update 1

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Capture.PNG

It is planned. Although 5.5 supports max size VMDK 62TB, VI client will continue to show as 2 TB as all the new 5.5 features are supported in the Web client. If you check the same WebClient, it will certainly show 62TB VMDK as maximum size. If you want to create VMDK size more than 2 TB, you will need to use the web client. All the features up to 5.1 are fully supported by VI client.

Do a little research here regarding the performance of the PC and the main memory/RAM.

If you all could estimate/Riddle the minimum and maximum amount of files Adobe program, as well as file sizes, by each program (Illustrator, Photoshop etc...) I drop the results into a spreadsheet and provided details to etc. (at least attempt, based on number/quantity of participants, if the top I'll provide statistics at the end).

Also indicate what is the size of the file you usually launched and how many of them. These averages are expected to produce some very interesting/useful information.

More people who best meet of course (unless this has been done or his stats there somewhere already).

Since I work mostly in Illustrator, these are the files that I took to target when looking for my storage by specifying the .ai extension. (both bad operating system couldn't do the math).

I specifically made the research by entering the generic asterisk before the file extension, for example: * .ai, then by specifying all storage locations (Windows, choose 'My Computer' etc., Mac do not know, I have one, just don't use it often so that if anyone would care to specify it).

For windows, the status bar at the bottom of the window has provided total number of files. To get out of the category, I've just enlarged screen and first counted the number of files poster by scrolling the window. Then moved/positioned column size of file, you click this header to sort etc. from the bottom up, then began to scroll the window with a simple click of mouse (not by the arrows) and counted the pages for the file/category varies so thought to them.

360 files in category 1

220 files Cat. 3

30 files in Cat. 4

5 files in Cat. 5

Average of Adobe programs and files of launched/open all day (or work them)

Illustrator: 2-5 or 10 files a few cat. 3, 1 in category 5 to 300 000 KB

Illustrator, launched with 2,300, 00 KB (300 MB) of files, maybe 5 Cat. 3 and 5 Cat. 4, 850 000 Ko charge total (850 MB)

• Maximum size of the VMDK file we can assign during the P2V?

Hello.

We conduct P2V for a server physical and would like to address one of the disk for P2V.

Rather than extend the VMDK disk in the future, we would like to extend during P2V. Given that VMDK file maximum size is 2 TB for ESXi host, we can assign 2 TB for this VMDK file OR there is a recommended maximum size to use?

Thank you

I have myself yet, but I guess you should be able to assign the maximum size of virtual disk, depending on the block size of the data store (for ESXi versions before the 5.x/VMFS-5). That said, I suggest that you don't assign it more than 2 032 GB in order to create snapshots for this virtual disk (see "calculates the time system required by the snapshot files" at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012384)

• VMX file larger than the maximum size supported by the data store

Hi all

I seem to be getting a strange error trying to a virtual machine that is located on a snapshot VMFS5, to the data store format.

The virtual machine (VMDK and VMX file) is installed on a thin provisioned 2 TB datastore which has the value VMFS5 formatting. It is a data store new with no other VM on it. I had problems in the past with the datastore block sizes (1 MB, 2 MB, 4 MB, 8 MB on VMFS3), however, I thought that VMFS5 got rid of the question, since it's all blocks of 1 MB and all files in the virtual computer are on the same data store.

The error I get indicates that the VMX file is too large for the data store (used Im saying "unspecified file), however, if I do the independent 2 TB disk snapshots through the fine. The virtual machine has two virtual disks, a 50 VMDK of GB and a thin 2 TB VMDK (200 GB used). I tried fast vMotioning the VMDK and VMX to other data formatted VMFS5 stores and still get the same error.

I'd appreciate any help and ideas.

Thank you

Travis

Although the block size limit is party, maximum 2 TB file size less 512octets still exists. Since a Flash disk can grow waist put in service the basic disk more overhead for the metadata, the maximum size of virtual disk - to be able to create snapshots - is 2032 GB.

• < Unspecified file name > file is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore '< indeterminate datastore >.

I know that this issue has much spoken in the forums, but the answers are always to make sure that your block sizes are set to 8 MB - mine are already. Let me explain:

I have a virtual machine with a large amount of connected storage - something along the lines of discs 10 x 1.99 to. Sit all VMDK on partitions of the VMFS of 8 MB of size block, including the configuration of the VM (location of the pagefile).

Every time I try and snapshot of the virtual machine, I see the "< unspecified file name > file is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store ' < unspecified datastore >. All other virtual machines instant fine, but any other VM has a similar amount of storage as the VM problem.

I have now moved the configuration files of the virtual machine to a new partition VMFS 5 of 1.91 TB, but the instant error persists. Most of the readers is sitting on VMFS 3.33 or 3.46. It will take me a while to move all VMFS 5 to see if that solves the problem.

VMware.log for VM reports:

My VMDK and volumes are smaller than 2032GB. I don't understand why, it's be a problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Although ESXi 5 supports larger LUN as a raw physical devices (up to 64 TB), the maximum size of a virtual disk has not yet changed.

• The Vmdk file size

Hello.

I have an ESX 4.0.0 host and I created a new virtual machine on this subject, to install WIN 2003.

When configure the virtual disk, I put the 18 GB disk and selected size space Allocate and commit on request option (thin Provisioing).

The following steps are fine and smooth. The installation is good and VM can be saved on the local HARD disk. It could work like I want.

In the end, I logged in the ESX sever to check how the size of the VMDK file has been generated.

Result as below.

$ ls - lh

total of 9.7 G

-rw - 1 root root 1.0 G the 31 mai 10:43 vm - 17412363.vswp

-rw - 1 root root 17G 31 May 17:51 vm1 - flat hard

-rw - 1 root root 8.5 K 31 mai 11:06 vm.nvram

-rw - 1 root root 469 31 mai 10:45 vm.vmdk

-rw - 1 root root 0 May 31 10:40 vm.vmsd

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root, 2.9 K 31 mai 10:43 vc01.vmx

-rw - 1 root root 259 the 31 mai 10:40 vm.vmxf

-rw - rr 1 root root 110 K 31 mai 17:18 vmware.log

I felt that it is fake!

Why is the total size of 9.7 GB but vm1 - flat hard file is 17 GB?

It's over the total size. It seems strange to... isn't it?

Then I was loggin to WIN2003 (vm) and make sure how the C drive size.

C drive has been total 16.9 and GB 8,44 available...

The C drive size is perhaps skirtss size. It is a good idea.

but WHY the total size is 9.7 GB? AND tell me the breakdown of this total size of the file.

Can someone explain to me?

Help me ~ ~ ~

Thank you!

Hello!

VM1 - flat hard is sparesefile and signals the total maximum size of the disk.

And 9.7 total disk space used, log + swap files.

• < Unspecified file name > file is larger than the maximum size supported by the data store ' < indeterminate datastore >

Hello

I use vSphere4 and I'm having problems, create snapshots of virtual machines. I get the following error when I try and take a snapshot...

File & lt; filename not specified & gt; is larger that the maximum size supported by the store data "& lt; not stated the store data & gt;

If I check all disks assigned to the virtual machine, the block sizes are ok. All the disks are of block size of 1 MB and less 60GB, except one that is 600GB and a 4 MB block size. There are also free space on each data store with being less 5,30 Go which I guess should be much more than enough to create a snapshot.

In addition, whenever I try and create a snapshot, it creates a file called SERVER - Snapshot1.vmsn, 2, 3, 4 etc. on the main data store.

Is it possible that because of the single disc of 600 GB, VMware prevents me from taking a snapshot?

Here is the config...

See the attached file for disk configuration information. Operating system drive is the drive where the snapshots are created.

Basic disks refers to all disks assigned to the virtual machine. Given that, by default, the snapshot is stored the vmx file, this data store should be able to potentially create a VMDK your largest disk size, assuming that you change every block in the vmdk.

In your case, it should support a snapshot that can potentially reach 600 GB to one of your drives, and so needs a block of size on the VMFS volume to support this. You can redirect the snapshots to another logic unit number and so to work around this problem (Storage VMotion is another option) limitation.

Trust, this clears up a little.

• In DatastoreBrowser vmdk file size not the same as busybox?

Hello

I have a few virtual machines in ESXi 4.0 U1, I installed the virtual disks as "thin" then they should grow in size, when the virtual machine is increasingly large.

If I look at the vmdk files in the DatastoreBrowser of vSphere Client 4 is the case and I have a few files 20 GB for my Windows Server 2008 vmdk files.

But if I look in the real file from busybox system (I use WinSCP or putty and even with Trilead VMX) then each vmdk-dish has the maximum size of 100 GB (exactly 107 GB). The vmdk file is named hard-plate here and not hard like in the DatastoreBrowser.

If I download the file DatastoreBrowser vmdk to a Windows machine that I get a vmdk-apartment with great size and not the size specified in DatastoreBrowser.

Surprisingly all-flat-files vmdk together (seen in WinSCP or VMX) are larger than the disk HARD Physics (500 GB).

What is c?

Thank you, franc

Hello

as said marcelo, thin discs works on the VMFS partition level. The thin disks does not exist outside of a VMFS partition.

For example, is run you 'df - kh' you can see the real disk (distributed) of the VMFS partition space. In other words, you can see the total amount of disk space used by the thin disks of the virtual machines.

Anyway, you turn in the busybox "ls - sh" (instead of 'ls - lh') you will see the real space of the thin virtual disk for a particular virtual machine (vmdk).

But the problem is that tools such as winscp see the size of the disk space of the thin disks. This tools see the size of the reserved the vmdk file. Then, it copies all the file size of the disk as a thick disk. And of course, the target file system partition that will contain the thin disks, does not support thin disks.

A thin disk with 3 GB of actual data (distributed) and a 10 GB reserved size is copied on the net by Winscp as a 10 GB drive.

Best wishes / Saludos.

• Hi, my places.sqlite file size is 30 720 KB I reached the maximum size, is there a maximum size for this. Visited links are is more changing color.

Hello
My places.sqlite file size is 30 720 KB I reached the maximum size, is there a maximum size for this.
Suddenly the visited links don't change is no longer the font color, that I prepare for an exam, I need visited issues to change color, to follow up on issues that I ended. But if I delete a few days of history, then again once, most visited links change color and then it stops, it seems that something is getting full and not able to accommodate more? Why my visited links don't change color after a number of visits? I would like to make a back up of the file places.sqlite. So I tried everything to remove the profile, uninstalling reinstalling, creating a new profile, and then copy paste places.sqlite etc, but as mentioned after a few visits, visited links is no longer change color, if I delete a few days in history and then a few visits is again change color and then stop again, so what should I increase so that my quota of visited links is increased , I also tried tweaking about: config and there has been no result. Although I was not really convinced that _pages growing brower.history_max (don't remember the name, but I'm sure you get the idea) will help.
Seems that while my visited links change color, quota is met and only if I delete the history of a few days will I get some links most visited to change color. Can someone enlighten us? As mentioned that my places.sqlite file size is 30 720 KB so I think maybe this has something to do with it? Would be very grateful if someone could help me. Thank you.

Sorry it is not looking good.

1. Unlike bookmarks history is not saved in Firefox.
2. There is a possibility using Windows.
3. Sync is not expected to back up things until the synchronization server
4. If places.sqlite does not sort itself you may have to re-create remove it. You will lose your history, but can still access indirectly IF you have saved a copy of the appropriate
5. Different databases to try to create new profiles
1. History
is rather less robust than bookmarks, you should deliberately somehow return it upward, but it's too late now
2. Earlier versions of Windows
This is really the last chance. Make sure you have some places.sqlite you saved. Always before and after any attempt to restore the backup. Windows must be able to provide a previous version. One of these versions may be usable as is; or can be used after a repair with housekeeping. Of course, this is not the latest version but it should help.
3. Sync is not a server backup service.
Sync is intended to save on another device, no backup is the fact that the second device then contains synchronized information. IIRC Sync development ceased, and the replacement when available may include a server backup option.
4. Recreate the database of bookmarks (including history)
Unfortunately, recess can only use saved bookmarks, there is no saved history to use. Once the database is re-created, it will continue to store the history but it loses the existing history. This time take steps to save on a regular basis.
5. Use the new profiles for database testing.

To simplify comparison of the results of the database different files create one or more new additional profiles. Then try to smash the places.sqlite file into the test profile with any other places.sqlite, you want to try. Allows you to directly compare the databases, without seeking to use sync and without changing the Firefox profile work unnecessarily. You can keep a reference profile of studies with the best of the profiles of any shows results of history; According to the best recreated or corrupted database is.
• Use the Profile Manager to create and delete profiles Firefox
• CARE, do not rename or delete profiles created once or use anything other than empty folders when they are created. Don't nest in the other profiles. (At least until you know exactly how it behaves - post back if you never consider such actions)

Difference between material FAT & FAT32?

First, note that there are three varieties of FAT: FAT12, FAT16, and
FAT32. Many people call just FAT16 FAT, because before that FAT32 is out.
FAT16 is the only variety used for hard drives, so just
The FAT was not enough.

FAT12 (hardly any more used) had a maximum volume size of 12 MB.
It has been used almost exclusively for floppy disks.

FAT16 was used on hard disks (or partitions) up to 4 GB and had a
cluster size which varied from 2 KB to 64 KB, depending on the size of
the partition. It serves almost never again, because almost nobody does
a as small as 4 GB partitions.

FAT32 FAT16 succeeded and has a maximum drive size of 2 TB. His
maximum file size is 4 GB, which explains why you can't copy a file of 5 GB to
it. its cluster size is 4 KB up to an 8 GB partition. Beyond 8 GB the
cluster size develops up to 32 KB.
NTFS, that's what almost everyone should use on their hard drives
today. Its maximum volume size is 2 ^ ^ 64-1 and its maximum file size
16 × 1024 is ^ ^ 6 bytes (much more than the bigger hard drive available
today). Cluster size is 4 KB, regardless of the size of the volume.

I have a disk full of files, and it is in the FAT32 file system. As I can't copy large files (5 GB +) in this player, I intend to fix this by changing the file systems.

Good! You should.

Apparently, it is not possible to do it without formatting.

It's not correct. To convert to NTFS, use you the CONVERT
command. But first read http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm , because
There is an important question about the size of cluster that is not obvious.

Also note that conversion is an important step, touching everything on your
drive. When you take a big step, no matter how unlikely it is
always possible that something can go wrong. For this reason, there
careful to make sure that you have a backup of everything you can not afford to
lose before you start.

• Y at - it a maximum size for a .muse file?

First of all, please excuse my bad English.

My question: I have to rebuild an existing site, more than a thousand pages. First of all, I tried with a program like Muse, compact and decompresses a file for each site.

But my first experience was unfortunate: after a certain file size, it was not possible to make any additions or changes, despite the 16 GB of Ram.

I was told that my site was too great - what was not stated anywhere so I worked for nothing.

I discovered Muse, that seems very interesting. But I see that here, too, it opens a file owner, .muse.

Before you opt for the Muse and subscribe, I be sure that I won't experience the same problem. There a maximum size for a .muse file?

I don't got no answer media and French forums, maybe there will be it here someone better informed?
