Merger of two data centers separated with a different license.

Due to the fusion of the IT departments, we have two data centers and vCenter servers.  The IP network is a network of flat class.  ISCSI are on two physically separate networks.

Data Center 1 (DC1)

vCenter Foundation 5.5

3 hosts vSphere 5 Enterprise (6 cpu)

1 series 6200 Equallogic SAN

Data Center 2 (DC2)

vCenter 5.1 Standard

2 hosts vSphere 5 Enterprise (4 cpu)

1 SAN Equallogic 4000 series

We would like to:

  1. move the Standard of DC2 on DC1 and the license to the Foundation from DC1 to DC2 (Swap licenses)
  2. import of DC2 in vCenter on DC1 and then unmold on DC2 Foundation license.
  3. Finally have two data centers operating from DC1 vCenter running Standard Edition 5.5

Is this possible at all?  How would we do this.

Thanks in advance

With licenses owned by the same company, the steps you mentioned should be ok.

However, from a technical point of view, you can plan the migration according to the features you use. A few things you can do is to disable HA and DRS on DC2 environment before migrating the hosts to DC1 (just to avoid potential problems), and you can also make sure for example on DC2 data store names do not match the names on DC1 to avoid confusion after the migration.

Unless the special functions are used on DC2 which must be supported before the migration, you can simply unplug the hosts of DC2 and add them to a DC1 with operational virtual machine. Host CPU licenses must move automatically with the hosts.

PS: TheSMO: licenses are based on major versions, i.e. 5.x., so there is no need to up - or their decommissioning in this case.

  • Two data centers with ESX

I have a current 20 servers ESX installation in my data center.  We took over a data center hub in a remote area whom we intend to build a new battery of roughly equal size ESX servers and services from there to sites talking.

I'm curious to know what the advantages and disadvantages are to implement a virtualcenter server at each location, or just add the new ESX site in our existing virtualcenter by creating a new object "data center".  Is there nothing won/lost by their implementation under a virtualcenter?

It's funny, ask you the question. I just saw this on VIOPS document that can give you a little help.

Proven practice: ROBO - remote management ESX hosts on the WAN with VirtualCenter

My first thought is to be cheap and pay for a vCenter. If you started to watch using MRS. you would need a server vCenter 2nd site in any case.

A commercial version of win can be installed on another PC if the old man died
I don't think there is a way to upgrade Windows XP to Win7, otherwise than by a new facility, and if this is the case you simply a real winxp cd to verify the eligible application (i.e. it must be installed)

  • FabricPath or OTV between two data center using Direct fiber cable

    Hello

I have two data center both of them has the same equipment N7k, N5k and N2k, and we want the dataCenter being active/active, I'm really confused to use OTV or FabricPath characteristic, if someone can help me with my scenario and explain to me what is the best solution and advantage and disadvantage between OTV and PabrcPath.

    Many thanks in advance

    Hi Steven,

No problem, I'll go through your points as completely as possible. I advise you to read more about these protocols, maybe if you have access to INE or similar, see their videos on this. I would also like to say again that I have not seen all documentation Cisco indicating that FabricPath to be used as a DCI.

With regard to the way fabric you ask what follows...

     1. only can use it between two datacenters of you have more we can't, please correct me?

No, you can use the path of fabric with more than two data centers, but even with OTV, you can use it with more than two data centers.

     2. HSRP localization can not be implemented as OTV. However You can have two differnet Gateways at the Data Center 1 and 2 using two different HSRP groups. If server is moved dynamically from, (i didn't understand this point can you please explain with example?

OK, so this is a GREAT topic. Location of HSRP CAN be implemented with OTV, but cannot be implemented with fabric path. First hop redundancy protocols can be localized and is supported by Cisco with OTV, this basically allows the same default gateway to reside in two of your data centers providing the ACTIVE/ACTIVE configuration. So no matter where your VM is, they did not change their default, even if gateway your servers to move to the other datacenter.

If we didn't have this, we would have only an active member of HSRP divided between DC and things would be extremely troublesome in regard to traffic flows. A virtual machine in DC2 VLAN needs to talk to host in VLAN B. But the default gateway is completely in DC1. So frame is sent to the ICD in DC1, then the gateway by default, routes packets VLAN B. This VLAN B lies in fact in DC2, so now it has to go all the way back to DC2. You get my point...? :)

With localization happen only local to the domain controller. If all servers / VMS in the domain controller can speak locally to its "own" default gateway.

     3. unknown unicast flooding (can you give me an example?)

Unknown unicast traffic is unicast packets/images with unknown destination mac address. By default, switches are flooding this type of traffic to all ports in the VLAN. With path of fabric that would take place during your DCI, but with OTV, it is all taken care locally, so massive savings on bandwidth here and it is much more effective.

     4. ARP optimization between Data Center (can you give an example regarding ARP optimization?)

There is another function of OTV, which makes it far superior on the way of tissue. Essentially, we are reducing the volume of traffic passing through the transport infrastructure (i.e. ICD)

When ARP, host in DC1 to host that responds in DC2, we use links and there is travel time of package that might be minimal, but is not the most optimal. OTV AED - or edge device spy ARP response and subsequently knows that this mapping exists from there. ARP takes place after the first Protocol, the EDA almost proxy ARP to DC1 so the ARP request locally does not have to travel to DC2.

     5. Typically two flows (Odd VLANs by OTV-VDC-1 and even vlans by OTV-VDC-2) carry the entire layer 2 traffic flow between the two Data Centes. Hence the load balancing the links is not efficient. ( (can you explain compare with FabricPath if you have example?)

IMHO, it's bad and good. Balance the workload of the OTV if you have more than an AED on site. VLAN strange appointment via an AED, even numbered VLAN go through the other. Depending on traffic on VLANs, this could become unbalanced. Fabric used by all its links to mac addresses 'route' to the respective SID - ID switch she needs to do. So perhaps a better uniformity of split here.

     6. VLAN scalability for OTV is lower than FabricPath as of this content writing. (can you explain what this mean i didn't understand it)

I completely disagree with this comment. I too do not understand.

     7. Resiliency of FabricPath network is better than OTV in some failure scenarios.(can me an example ?)

I also disagree with that. Resilience of path of fabric could be same as OTV or perhaps better. However, my personal experience is that OTV fine tuning with things like BFD failover is much faster!

Fabric is good because the control of aircraft ISIS and its operation is admirable, but could say the same for the OTV.

Lets say one of the DCI links had to die, the transmission of the tissue path would continue through the other links, then perhaps for low latency, high frequency, environments that would be beneficial. OTV will change the EDA and re - learn mac, announced by other AEDS, addresses, but as I said, the time could be extremely minimal and tuning. This isn't a big deal, unless you need under second time convergence!

I hope that I have answered your questions, I recommend use for your DCI OTV, use the path of fabric for your inside of local switching in your DC. This has been implemented repeatedly and the links I sent you the models validated Cisco also point out.

Remember - fabric has been built to be a step towards TRILL, and replacement of protocols spanning-tree, OTV was built especially for the dci. They are both built and examples of specific design. It makes no sense to get these confused or mixed up, unless there is a real and pressing the case.

Joel conclusion is right, use the right tools for the job. If the use case is good for the FP then OK, if not, OTV.

  • You can cluster consistency of data centers?

We currently lack two separate groups of coherence in the different data centers. One is prod the other DR.

Would it not possible for nodes in each cluster to create a cluster that spans two data centers? Then in a failover scenario data would be available.

I know that pulse of nodes of coherence between them to keep the members of the classes and there is a TTL parameter to determine the life of package. Would have nodes in data centres resulting in pulses being missed or TTLs killing packages?

Did anyone had success with this?

Performance of coherence is related to the latency between the nodes. Having a single distributed cluster on 2 data centers might harm performance (some wait times might have to be changed to prevent the nodes from A data center to claim another node in datacenter B is out of scope/possibly dead).

When you lose the network connectivity between 2 data centers (note I do not say "If you lose connectivity". This WILL happen), you are welcome in the 'world of split brain', each half of the grid to believe the other is dead and who claim to be the 'master '. And so if you have a replicated data on N nodes, master backups are sent back in each data center, performance for a few minutes (the time of course depends on many parameters...). And of course the data will no longer be synchronized between 2 data centers. The quorum must be thought out and stuff like that...

I could be wrong, but as far as I know I'd rather have 2 separate groups. I think 12.1 has new features to replicate the data the main grid to the Dominican Republic one, I was not through any new documentation.

  • Clone a model on multiple data centers

    So here's the scenario:

In my vcenter, there are two data centers. In a Datacenter (B), that we have our systems development and the other data center (A) are our production environments. Must often make a clone of a (B) VM and clone a VM (A) through. We have a process of the method we use to move our VMs. I'm powerCLI throughout the process in order to save on some manual cloning time. This is our process:

1 clone a VM (B) direct and take from the Datacenter (B) under the "DEV" folder, under this is a subfolder 'AppServer' where the virtual machine "DevAPP" exists and it a clone of this subfolder in another subfolder in 'AppServer' also called ' ~ DEV (B) to (a) staging of Clone.

    2. once the clone "Date of DevApp_today" is realized in the "~ DEV (B) to (a) staging of Clone" remove us the NIC 1 and then convert it to a template.

    3. once it is converted to a template with the name 'Date of DevApp_today' clone us over the back (B) data center "~ DEV (B) to a Clone (A) Organization" (A) record data center "(B) to (a) staging of Clone.

    4. once the 'Date of DevApp_today' model in the data center (A) convert us into a virtual machine and and add the NIC, assign VLAN appropriate and then activate connected to power on.

    5. once the network card on the virtual computer we then convert back to a model and deploy him 11 VMs with the customization files to configure the virtual machine.

Most of the time steps 1 and 2 I can script fairly easily, and the 4 and 5, my biggest problem is step 3. What I've tried is by using the New-model command.

Example: New-model -model 'Date of DevApp_today' -location a Datacenter in English (common name) VMHost - $HostA (a host in A data center) -data store $Data (storage in A data center) DiskStorageFormat - Thin -RunAsync-confirm: $false

It works to get the center of data (B) (A) data center model, but he falls into the root of the data center (A). I know it's because in - place I put 'A' there, but I do not know in any case to decompose from there to drill down to the data center (A) subfolders. If I put the subfolder "(A) (B) (a) staging of Clone" it's all just a stink about how I already have a template of this name and it must be cloned in the same data center. Meanwhile once it reaches the root of (A) I have just run a Move inventory on the template to move to "(B) to (a) Clone staged."

I have necessarily need a whole script created for me, I just want to know how to move the model obtained in (B) (a) without him having to be abandoned in the root (A), move inventory

Not sure about the quotes or not, but may be necessary

  • Using CLI, I would clone a virtual machine between different data centers

    Hello!!

    We have two data centers.

We want to clone a virtual of DataCenter1 to DataCenter2 machine.

    We cannot with vSphere.

Does anyone know how we can do this? any idea?

    Thank you very much

    Jose.

Cloning is a feature of vCenter Server, not a host ESX (i). You need to connect to vCenter, that's why you get the error because this operation is not supported in a host ESX (i)

  • Using node NHP groups in multiple data centers

    Hello

I was looking for information, I'll implement a distributed deployment of ISE.   We have two data centers, each will have its own group of PSN node (load balancing), I need a strategy where we can ensure that all the DNA do not point to a single group of PSN node.  In the config switch that I only noticed that the radius server registration option where first is referenced and secondary IP is used only if the primary Radius Server is unavailable.  We have many sites of the direction we want to deploy ISE, we would like to distribute the RADIUS AuthC/AuthZ evenly between the two DC.

    Thank you

    -Amin

Just so we are clear, ISE node groups did not-load balancing, you need a for this external load balancer. If you are actually using a balancer for each domain controller, then you might have half of your switches just manually use a vip for primary and secondary school, and the other half upside down. Also, if you use aaa server groups in your switch, you can also do a local switch 'balancing', based on the current session how are radius on each server in the group.

  • Splitting licenses between data centers

Question about licenses for separation between the data centers

    EXAMPLE OF

License is good for 30 CPU; s

    DC-1

    host one gets 2

    host b gets 2

    c host gets 2

    DC - 2

    host a get 4

    host b get 4

    DC-3

    host a get 8

    host b gets 8

    Perfectly legal or?

Also - if you have 20 2 CPU licenses can we swap to 1 20 CPU license? Actually more simple license management.

From a technical point of view, you can combine or divide licenses required in your My VMware portal. However, there may be legal restrictions, such as the use of licenses in the regions and counties other than where the licenses were purchased.

  • Virtual data centers how to a campus of double site?

We begin to plan for a migration of vSphere 4.1 and 5.1.  We have two data centers several miles share a link 10 gig.  In our current setup, we have a virtual data center that includes the host esx on both sites.  VMotion and storage vmotion work well on the link 10 gig.  HA and DRS are not currently configured, but it will be included in the new configuration.  I'm looking for the advantages and disadvantages to continue having a virtual Datacenter, against two, one for each physical site that includes only the servers at this place, that is, buildling1-vdc, would include esx1 bldg1, bldg1-esx2, etc., and construction2-vdc, would include construction2-esx1, bldg2-esx2, etc.. We would be able to preserve the beaches of IPS to each site in the case of a link failure.    As I understand it, we would not power of vmotion or HA and DRS established between the two virtual data centers.  Other have a virtual infrastructure of several location connected by links broadband?  If you do, how much virtual datcenters you have and how they are configured?

Please ask questions if you need more specific information to answer the question.

a "Datacenter" vCenter object is a limit for the vMotion and distributed vSwitches. So, if you want to migrate virtual machines between the buildings / clusters these groups must be part of the object of data center. Also if you want to have similar networks on both sides and you want to use Distributed vSwitched then you will need to have both part of clusters of the same domain controller so that the VDS objects are pushed down.

    Hello

Sorry, I'm still not sure you understand the question.

You wonder why the rounding error is apparent to 6 digits to the left of the decimal separator in numbers, but not in number 7 digits to the left of the decomal? The answer is itself a rounding error.
When Oracle is the arithmetic mean of the dates, the result is a fraction that cannot be stored in a binary number, such as preciesly
998396.9999999999999999999999999999999996857... it it rounds to the nearest value it can store, such as
998396.9999999999999999999999999999999997. in other words, it can store 40 digits. In this case, 6 figures to the left of the decimal separator and 34 of the figures to the right. The number is rounded to the nearest multiple of 10 ^-34 ^
What happens if we add 86400 this number?

     998396.9999999999999999999999999999999997
    + 86400.0000000000000000000000000000000000
    ------------------------------------------
    1084796.9999999999999999999999999999999997

Now we need 7 digits before the comma, then round the number to the nearest multiple of 10 ^-33 ^, which is
    1084797.000000000000000000000000000000000

  • IMessage Apple Watch has two interviews separated with the same person?

My new Apple Watch has a problem with iMessage and I know how to fix this on my iPhone but not watch?

On my iPhone, that my ID apple is connected to more than 10 devices and sometimes when a new device is added, it adds the addresses on my apple for iMessage and FaceTime ID and I always fix by unchecking the addresses that I don't want in the application settings under "Messages" and "FaceTime." However, this isn't the same thing to watch because there is no option in the settings on the Apple Watch and the watch App on my iPhone.

I would like to help please?

    Hello

Apple Watch uses the same parameters (for how you can be reached and how new conversations are started) for Messages as your iPhone.

If you have two interviews separated with the same person, the following steps may help:

    • On your iPhone, check if there is more than one contact form in Contacts of this person (if so, remove duplicates).
    • Delete old Messages conversations with this contact on each of your iPhone and watch:
      • iPhone: app Messages > swipe to the left on a message thread > delete.
      • View: Open the Messages app (from the home screen, which is accessible by pressing the digital Crown) > swipe to the left on a message thread > tap on Trash / delete.
    • On your iPhone in the app Watch: Watch My > general > reset > press reset sync data:
      • You won't see anything happen after pressing it (the process runs in the background, invisible to the user).
      • Leave a minute or two to allow the course ends.
    • Restart your iPhone and your watch (turn the two together off the coast, then restart your iPhone first):
