Migrate library phot for an external drive in my new iMac

I have a library of Photos (imported from the old iPhotos) an old Mac that I have saved on an external drive. Now I want to migrate this same library in a new iMac (21.5 inch, end of 2015), with OS X EL Capitan 10.11.3. Someone has any idea how to do this correctly? Fear of losing files and / or photos being I m...

1. the solution for not losing things is to always have good backups - if you have one, you're sure to lose sooner or later things

2. to move to a new computer, drag the library into the folder on the new computer and launch Photos - it will open and convert the library as needed - if for reason that it not just drag the Photos icon library in the dock

When you select a drive to use with Time Machine, your Mac automatically prompts you if you need to reformat the drive.

    • If you are using an external drive connected to your Mac, use disk utility to make sure that your backup disk is formatted in HFS + extended (journaled) and is the partition type GUID Partition Table (GPT).

What happens when the photo of system library is on an external drive and then the system creates a library of Photos? How do merge you them?

Your library system can be on an external drive, if the drive is Mac OS extended (journaled) format and mounted on-site.

But you must be careful, your external drive is always connected and available before the Photos and to import new photos.

If Photos opens a different library, news, you can switch to the library on your external drive by double clicking on an external library. You can have several libraries, no problem.

But pictures don't have any tools to merge libraries. You can switch between libraries, then open them alternately.  To merge two libraries export the photos of the smallest library and import the photos exported in the largest library.

Or use third-party "PowerPhotos" to move photos between libraries.  But the merger is not supported in the free trial version. You must purchase the full version. You can download it here: Fat Cat Software

THANK YOU EVERYONE IN MY ABOVE DILEMMA - please read on:

After reading a lot of articles and messages from the Forum on this issue, as well as information provided by the seller, I discovered the main cause of my pain was "Malware" by the name of "RESEARCH of CLARO", who himself had included in my browser and taken control through it's own 'Toolbar '. I also quite false information on the hard drive of my PC through many "blue screens". Now, I understand the import of the term 'Blue Screen of Death'.

I was unable to uninstall this rogue program that he was not on my list of "Add/Remove Programs". Nor can it be found anywhere on my OS' it Drive in the lists of Documents and settings or Program Files. I stayed at loss as to how to remove the malicious program until I came across a list of my 'Cookies' PC on which were four entries that included "Claro". As soon as these have been removed, my computer is back to character, recognized the Seagate external hard drive and the appropriate screen is appeared on the screen after that was revealed the "dashboard" which allowed for the programming of the backup of 13.3 GB of data on the internal drive which eventually ended without incident.

So, now, all right and if I never see Claro again it must be too early.

    Thank you, Ray.

  • the shortcut for the external drive icons do not appear on the desktop

Running Windows 7 Home Premium.  None of the shortcut icons of the program (on my external hard drive) appear on the desktop.  Default icons took their place and launch the correct programs when you click it.  I tried to change individual icons in the correct program ones, but that they would not.  They all used to be there!

I tried to reboot several times but that has not changed anything.

The only program added or deleated recently was free archiver B1.  I uninstalled immediately after installing and do not actually use it.

How to bring back the icons.

    Bill

    Hello Bill,

Two possibilities come to mind. The first is that the program of the archiver to change icons, in which case you will need to reinstall the program, understand how the icons have been changed, reverse the process and then uninstall the program again. Phew. Its a lot of work, but I got a program do just this thing very to my car icons and it's the process that I had to follow to cancel his "practical work"!

The other possibility is that his associates to make it an external drive, which is still not very good with Windows. Lets start with this possibility first. First of all, try this Fix It from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Windows_USB_diagnostics . Not fixed? Try this second difficulty: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/ . Still not fixed? Is the drive recognized by Windows - right disk size / type format?

If the disc itself is not recognized by Windows, try this trick. Download and install the freeware Aomei Partition Assistant application, download it from here http://download.cnet.com/AOMEI-Partition-Assistant-Standard-Edition/3000-18512_4-75118871.html?tag=mncol;1 - use the link Direct download only. Then once its installed, select the external hard drive, then select Properties. That's it, just by selecting the drive and choosing properties are sufficient to get Windows to recognize the drive.

Now that the drive is recognized by Windows, has the problem of the icon "disappeared"? If the answer is still no, then I think you need to look at the program archive as a real possibility. The only way to know of course is to install the program again and look for a setting (try Configuration) where the program changes the icons of the programs.

Post your results here and let me know how you fare.

    Kind regards

  • Cannot open iphoto library after copy old HARD drive to the new HARD disk

I had to buy a new MacBook and recover my files, the old MacBook HARD drive is connected to the new via a USB connection and support base.  I have successfully transferred all my files to the new disk.   However, I can't open the iPhoto library that I just moved through without going through the old drive still connected.  I get a message like "cannot open the migrated library.   However, the new iPhoto on the new laptop is accessible OK.

Yu try to open the iPhoto Photos or iPhoto library?  "Cannot open the migrated library" alert indicates, that you opened the library on Photos for Mac and application Photos changed the name of the library ".migratedphotolibrary" file extension

If you open the photo library, but want to use with iPhoto, change the extension of your iPhoto in ".photolibrary" library file name

  • My old computer crashed. I was able to connect his old hard drive as an external drive to my new computer. I would like to get all my old favorites (there are no prior backup on the old disk).

Is there a file where the bookmarks are stored which I can copy from the old drive to the new to restore old bookmarks? Thank you!

(I still have the original files of Firefox on the old hard drive, including one that presumably contains all my old favorites).

  • Media Player deletes all the songs that were added just for the external drive

I am using Windows 7 media player. I start the media player and my music list is empty.  Media Player begins to add songs to my portable media player. After adding songs it removes so all of the songs added.  What I can do to keep the songs is the library?

    Hello

    1. have you tried to play the songs of the external hard drive?
When you remove the external hard drive, you will lose the library of the media player library list, it's the design of the media player library and this is how it works in the location list monitoring.

However, if you want to keep the music files in the library even after having remove the external HARD drive, you do not delete the location in the location tracking list. You can add the location to avoid the problem.

  • I use CS3 for years, now I have a new iMac running 10.11.2 and none of my CS3 no longer works. Should I upgrade? the customer support has been very useful.

    Yes, that's basically it.

I don't know who would say allows you to place the Adobe program files in the trash, but it was very bad advice.

Uninstall Adobe Creative Suite 3 and Adobe Creative Suite 3 products

If you manually deleted an application or CS3 edition by deleting their files and you cannot reinstall applications, run the Adobe CS5 cleaner tool. The CS5 cleaner tool works with CS3, CS4 and CS5 products. See installation problems with the CS5 cleaner tool | CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3 for instructions on downloading and using the tool.

  • New Mac, same disk external DRIVE for the library; does not see the files

I reconnected my iTunes library from a disk external DRIVE to my new computer, but iTunes does not recognize my files of the ALAC instead, he goes to the cloud and plays music from Apple things. How can I listen to my files? All the files are there, the library is intact; I changed the path in iTunes. Without result. He always plays with the cloud.

You do not change the path in iTunes.  Who does as it says which is tell iTunes where media files [new] store. You change the path you launch iTunes by holding down the option/alt key, while the application starts and then choose when prompted the iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder you included if all goes well on the hard disk external.  If everything you have on the outside are media files, then you better head for your old computer fast and get the rest of the library there.  It's the rest of these files in the iTunes folder that make up the other half of the 'library' iTunes needs.
