Migration ESXi server: install vCenter Server 2.0?

We are currently migrating to VMware Server 2.0 to ESXi 4 (local storage only execution Essentials).  At this moment we have (2) host VMware Server 2.0.  As part of our move, we will deploy a new server (host) for ESXi and need to install vCenter, so we can start (convert virtual machines, etc.).  The plan will be to move all production of VMS Server 2.0 to the new host ESXi 4 in a piecemeal fashion and then once's done it install ESXi 4 on one of the host VMware Server 2 old servers.

Because we cannot do this big bang, my question is: can we install vCenter as a VM on the server 2.0 while we are migrating to ESXi?

Once our move to ESXi is complete (end of the game, we have 2 ESXi hosts and 1 host Vmware server 2), can we then convert and move the VM vCenter to one of the new ESXi servers?   Sort of a game of shuffle, but I see no other choice and I hope it works well.  Comment on reviews would be great.  Thank you...

Why don't you just create a new virtual machine in the box of ESXi, installing vCenter, and then start the conversion of your VM from VMware Server ESXi? It is the method I would use.

In case you're not aware - you can always create virtual machines on ESXi without vCenter.

    (1) each location access & manage esxi servers / VMS than by its user admin - own data center / Esxi servers / VMs

Select your data center to host & cluster inventory, go to the Manage tab, under you will find authorization tab, where you should add authorization with spread to children, by selecting the account user/group and appropriate role (create custom roles if necessary).

    (2) is not access any other server Esxi / VM - no access to the other data centers / Esxi servers / VMs

Suppose that the user is given with permission only on Dataceter1 in your inventory, that account has no default on any other data centers, so when permissions that the user will be able to see these inventory items where he or she has permission.

    (3) a super user access and manage all the server vCenter / Esxi Server / VM

Select your vCenter Server server in host & cluster inventory, go to the Manage tab, under you will find tab permission , then you must add the permission with spread to children, by selecting the account Super user/group and appropriate role.

  • Why MS SQL server is required for installing vcenter?

Why MS SQL server is required for installing vcenter?

You need a database to contain the vCenter Server information. It may be SQL/Oracle. By default, an installation of SQL Express happens if you do not want to install a complete SQL Server blown - it will have maximum but limits work for smaller infrastructure.

    Exact wording of the documentation:

vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager require databases to store and organize the data from the server.

Each instance of vCenter server must have its own database. vCenter Server instances cannot share the same database schema. Several databases of vCenter Server can reside on the same database server, or they can be split between multiple database servers. Databases Oracle, who have the notion of schema objects, you can run several unique vCenter Server instances in a database server if you are the owner of a different pattern for each instance of vCenter server, or use a server of Oracle database dedicated for each instance of vCenter server.

You don't need to install a new server database for the vCenter Server installation to work. During installation, you can point the vCenter Server system for the supported existing databases. vCenter Server supports IBM DB2, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. vCenter Update Manager supports Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. For a list of supported database server versions, see the vSphere compatibility tables tohttp://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf on the VMware vSphere documentation Web site.

  • Cannot add ESXi host to vCenter Server

    Hello

I created a home set up a VMware datacenter for study purposes. I currently have 2 virtual machines: an ESXi host with vCenter Server Appliance deployed on this subject.

I configured the server vCenter through web interface device and I have connected using vSphere Client.

I created a data center, but when I try to add a host, I get "ERROR: the request exceeded."
Connection with vSphere client directly to the ESXi host works.

I can connect using SSH to the ESXi host.

I have disabled the firewall on the ESXi host.

I have read many articles on the kbase but nothing helped me to solve this problem.

    You have any ideas?

    I finally got to understand.

It seems like my vmware workstation is not connected to the esxi as a physical host in my local network host, and so I was able to ping it unit of vCenter Server (but it worked the other way around, and that's why I thought it was ok).

After the connection to the physical LAN of VMware workstation settings, everything worked fine.

  • Problems after installing vCenter has 5.1 - no vCenter Server found

Sorry, I'm new to this and I'm having a problem installing vCenter 5.1 has on Windows Server 2008 R2 by using the simple installation.  After completing the installation without mistakes, I starts the Web Client vSphere, connect and it comes up with no vCenter server and a message that says "to get started installation is a vCenter Server system or permission to access an existing vCenter Server system.  I'm on my 4th time well and it is consistent in the result, so I figure I should ask.

If it's important, Windows Server is not a member of Active Directory, DNS works forward and reverse, I tried the IP address and FQDN name.

I don't know where to be troubleshooting it.  It is my first installation of vCenter. I checked all the services, and they are running.

I watched some log files and it seems pretty clear that something is trying to talk about something and is to be rejected, but I have no idea why.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

During the simple installation of vCenter Server 5.1 method, it will first install the SSO part. During this part, you will be asked to create a password for a user called admin@system-domain. Please note that this user is only for the management of permissions within the standards body. That's why you can't see any instance of vCenter SSO. After completing the installation of SSO, the vCenter Server installation will be lauch. During the installation, the wizard will ask you about the password previously configured for the admin@system-domain user, enter it, and then click Next.

Second, on the next prompt you should enter a global domain, user, or a local group who will be recognized by the SSO as vCenter Administrator service. Then complete the installation. In the end, make sure the "SSL Port" under the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ADAM_VMwareVCMSDS\Parameters registry key is REG_DWORD with a decimal value of 636.

    See: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1023864

After that, open the vSphere Client or the webclient service, enter your vCenter Server server's FULL domain name and and a name/password user (domain\username), which has permission such vCenter administrator mentioned in part II.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards.

  • workstion 8 - cannot install 64-bit on the esxi Server vm

I installed VMWARE WORKSTION 8.2 on my system after I installed Win7 64-bit.

Then, I installed the server ESXI WORKSTION Version 5 469 512 on VMWARE WORKSTATION

Now I'm running the server via VSPHERE CLIENT 5.

Whenever I try to install a virtual system on the ESXI 64-bit version, it gives an error that the system is not supported and I can only use it for information.

If I install the 64-bit version of virtual on my computer without problem systems, why I can not install on the ESXI SERVER ?

Change the settings for the virtual machine for the VM ESXi.  On the processors tab, check the box next to 'Virtualiser VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/IVR.'  If your hardware supports this feature, you will be able to run embedded 64-bit clients.  For more information, see nested running VMs.

  • vCenter update manager install - vcenter server isn't compatible?

I try to install vcenter update manager.  I tried the two 4.0 update 1 and 4.0 Update 2.  Both give me an error in the first step of the installation when I specify our vcenter server, port, username, etc.  He states:

"vcenter server is incompatible with the vmware vcenter update manager that you are installing.

We run vcenter 4.1.0 (build 258902).  I can't find any information on this error.  Was hoping to find an answer here before opening a SR with vmware.

If you use vCenter 4.1, you must install VUM 4.1, which can be located on the vCenter installation CD in the folder updateManager.  VCenter is a 64-bit application, VUM is not and still requires a 32-bit DSN.

  • Manage an ESXi host using vCenter Server?

I understand it is possible and requires of the specific licenses for ESXi hosts, even if I find information on the VMWare site a bit confused as to what I need exactly. We have-

    1 License Server Standard 4 x vCenter

4 x vSphere Enterprise license 4 (who manage our ESX 4 hosts this site)

3 (and soon 4) remote sites that have the same server ESXi

I would like to be able to manage ESXi host using vCenter as well, is this possible with what we have? If this isn't the case, can someone direct me as to what it takes?

    Thank you

You need the standard by CPU socket for each host license to add to vCenter.

You can always create a separate environment and get the Essentials Bundle (up to 3 guests max) for $500:

    http://store.VMware.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=displayPage&env=base&locale=en_US&siteid=VMware&ID=ProductDetailsPage&ProductID=126843700&RESID=psfyPAoBAlkAACQ2y-kAAAAX&rests=1277824287882

So you should have 2 vCenter servers.

  • Installing vCenter 4.0u2 with the remote server in SQL2008

I've been running vCenter 4.0 for awhile with SQL Express on the same machine.  I installed SQL Server 2008 on a remote computer, detached and attached the SQL Express database to that server.

I've implemented the SQL 2008 database with a SQL rather than a domain account authentication account because our domain accounts will expire every 90 days and I have no control over making an exception to this policy.

I have tried everything point vCenter 4.0 to the new database using the instructions in the knowledge base, but it has always failed.  So I just uninstalled (who also failed and I had to manually get the rest but this is not the point of this post).  When I go to install vCenter 4.0u2 with SYSTEM defined as the user vCenter (again because of limitations of domain account and expire 90 days), it gets all the way up to the

    "

25003.Setup failed to create the vCenter repository"

and then breaks down.  It's probably something with the user accounts on SQL authentication and vCenter Server does not, but how can I work around this? If I do a local account on the vCenter server with the same name and password on the vCenter server and run it like this account which will solve the problem?

Check here also, not exactly the question, but it can help to point you in the right direction.

  • Installing Vcenter new server with the new database

    Hello

We currently have the virtual Center 2.5 with SQL express back-end and we are planning to upgrade to vcenter server with Oracle backend. My original plan was to start over by installing vcenter on a temporary server with Oracle and eventually return the current server vcenter and use the same Oracle server. What would be the simplest solution for this? Essentially, in the end, we need to use the current server to vcenter but move from the db to the Oracle database. Our group consists of 3 servers and only active DRS at present (HA disabled for this upgrade). Can I upgrade the current virtual Center vcenter server directly and do fresh install for the Oracle database?

    Thank you

I would also install a new server vCenter thr.

After that, make a new configuration and Noor and if everything works correctly, uninstall the old und VC 2.5 check also the HA!

    Good luck!
