(Yes, if I had not forgotten my external hard drive I should not try that, but I forgot it.)  Things seemed to make the partition, but time machine bogged down and hung up.  After trying many things, I found myself deleting and resetting on the internal extended (journaled) using HD, recreating a single partition using the guidelines GUID, thinking that I could just do a clean reinstall.  BUT, while I can check/fix delete etc the internal disk utility when HD started from my external hard drive so I boot from the OS install DVD it does not recognize the internal HD.   ? ? ?   Gives cannot update this post Mac.  If I run the Setup from the beginning of the disk upward once again, no offers to go to in the installation program.  I can access everything in THE RUNOFF when the post boot drive.

  Probably should have Setup no matter what RAID before installation.  Thinking that can be a destructive thing.  Not that I'm a great believer in RAID1 arrays (mirror) - I'm not.  I'd rather have real backups - external backups.

  Usually a RAID1 will help only if the first hard drive die an immediate death.  None of the defective areas, no viruses, no random deletion of files.  Why?  Because a HARDWARE RAID1 is an instant copy of everything that happens on the first hard drive.  If you clear hundreds of files - they are on both.  A virus corrupts the things - the other disc is in place.  Form data and scramble of bad sectors - well, look!

  More old Windows XP need a driver AHCI Intel's but I think this isn't a problem with SATA driver missing because as far as I know Windows 8 as well as Win 8.1 already contains the drivers to recognize the SSD or HARD disk drive.

  I think that it s a HDD issue naturally it s really strange that the HARD drive is different sometimes and sometimes it s is not visible, but I doubt that it could be software related issue. That's why I think that it s a drive HARD and in my opinion, you should check if other HDD SATA runs correctly.
