MIX the ESX 3.5 and new Vsphere ESX

Hello

Please be patient with my questions.

I have an existing TWO older ESX 3.5 server in a Cluster connected to a SAN switch with dual path.  These two servers are managed by a virtual Center 2.5. These two ESX are connected to a SAN tell LUN1 LUNS in a cluster named Cluster_A

I will install TWO NEW Vsphere 4.0

Question 1) when SAN zoning is configured, the current LUN1 can be presented now two new ESX Server because they are of different version?

Question 2) since the ESX 3.5 required a license server of virtual center still in place, how I installed the license in this virtual Center assuming that I upgrade to vcenter 4 in an environment where I have two esx 3.5 in a clusterA and two esx 4.0 to focus and manage a single VC?

Question 3) given that I have two ESX 3.5 in ClusterA, let say, I installed two new ESX 4.0 in the same ClusterA, what will be the impact on this type of configuration?

(> Question 1) when SAN zoning is configured, the current LUN1 can be presented now two new ESX Server because they are a different version?

Yes.

(> Question 2) since the ESX 3.5 required a license server of virtual center still in place, how I installed the license in this virtual Center assuming that I upgrade to vcenter 4 in an environment where I have two esx 3.5 in a clusterA and two esx 4.0 to focus and manage a single VC?

You must allow the license server to 3.5 running even after upgrading vCenter.

(> Question 3) because I have two ESX 3.5 in ClusterA, let say, I installed two new ESX 4.0 in the same ClusterA, what will be the impact on this type of configuration?

No, they can operate in the same cluster. But if you want to be able to migrate virtual machines between 4.0 and 3.5 to NOT upgrade from VM hardware version, leaving all virtual machines with hardware VM 4.

  • Question about the replacement of router and new network location. Is this normal?

Yesterday, I replaced my router with a another router of the exact same brand, model, and firmware version. The only thing that has changed as far as the router will have the MAC address.

In any case, after that I swapped the router and plugged the network cable, I could use Internet all day very well. This morning when I turned on the computer, introduced me to all of a sudden with the Wizard "Set network location", and Windows has created a new situation "network 2". Everything always seem to work well.

I want to just make sure that it is the expected, normal Windows 7 behavior after changing a router. I'm just a little paranoid because the network location Wizard pops up only the next day, I replaced the router, and not immediately after I plugged in the cable.

    Thank you!

Yes. It's normal.  The delay in the command prompt is a little unusual, but I've seen this before.

  • What is the relationship between the library of Photos and the iPhoto library?

I'm asking this question here because I can't find all the relevant information online.

I was dealing with imac a client recently who had a full boot drive. I noticed that his old iPhoto library used 126GB while she had already made the transition to the Photos. His photo library said that he was using a lot more (200 + if I remember correctly). I copied the iPhoto on an external drive library and deleted. Then, I opened the contents of the package and imported pictures remains in program pictures to make sure that I wasn't actually remove all of his memories. Once the work is finished, I was surprised to see that there are more than 6 GB of free space on his computer. What gives? Is there a relationship between the old iPhoto library and new photo library? If so, what is it? Is what I did without danger? I understand at the time that she will not be able to return to iPhoto. But what I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

No - they are totally separate - connection or relationship of any kind is not

or the other can be deleted without any effect on the other - but it won't save much space at all and is not recommended - which is exactly what you have seen- Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

  • Possibility of setting up new vSphere 4 and pass the ESX 3.5 hosts?

The upgrade path makes me nervous (am I too paranoid?).

In any case, I have enough material and storage SAN to configure a new vSphere environment.

Is it possible to install a new enviornemnt and separate vSphere 4 and then migrate the 3.5 environment hosts? The doc has always start with VC upgrade to version 4 and be careful not to break stuff...

I actually finished a project a few days ago in this respect. I deleted the machine virtual old inventory, moved with the former VM of the LUN to the storage for the new environment group and added to the inventory again. Of course, if you do not use the same storage, it will be more in depth, but it certainly can be done. The plan was to do what weinstein said in his post, regarding the old host to the new Victoria Cross add, but I move the first LUN and had to finish like I did. It went well and I don't have problems with the virtual machine again.

  • Mix of ESX 3.5 and VMware ESX in the same cluster

    Hello

I'm currently involved in ESX 3.5 Migrating virtual machines to a new vSphere environment.  All ESX 3.5 hosts running on obsolete kit and will be decomm had at the end of the project.  All hosts are managed by the same server vCenter.

The only problem is, I have to add an additional ESX4 server, but there is not enough available physical switch ports.  I have decomm one ESX3.5 servers in order to free ports, but they run at 2 knots, and I will lose redundancy if a hardware problem arises.

    My proposed Solution: -.

I think decomming ESX3.5 host 1 and move it to the new vSphere cluster.  The type of brand/model/CPU is different between the old and the new servers and I am not concerned by VMs DRS'ing between 2 environments, however, I understand that I have would be protected by HA if anything disastrous happened.  All hosts are connected to the same storage.

You don't see any problem with that?

You can have a mixed cluster, but this must be managed by vCenter 4.x.

And you also need a license for the former hosts of 3.x server.

    HA will work.

If the CPU is compatible VCA, then as VMotion, DRS, VCA will work.

  • Running the old and new Vcenters simultaneously on the same San

We spend VSphere 4.1 to 5.5. We are very weak with only 3 hosts running about 20 comments of the virtual computer on a San.  Our former VM VCenter is always on Win 2003 and I am changing as well.

So instead of doing an upgrade from 4.1 to 5.5 and convert the former vcenter 4.1, we decided to simply fill out a brand new VSphere 5.5 installation to a new server we have.  We have also installed a Vcenter 5.5 new appliance as well. So, essentially, we have installed two different vcenter, old and new running.  Then, we plan to move hosts esxi 4.1 existing in the new Vcenter device manually.   Then eventually fly over the guests of a host in the new box and then wipe and reload each older host with 5.5

So I've already finished the first half of this project.  But I have a question.

During the passage of Windows VCenter 4.1 to the new host esx and VCenter Unit 5.5. I run two VCenter (ver 4.1 and ver 5.5) simultaneously for a short period of a few days.  We're still running on the host 4.1 old and the new vcenter 5.5 running on the new esx host 5.5.

We will walk a host both the old VCenter and will be added to the new Vcenter 5.5 appliance.  But I'll share my SAN alone of course. If I do this and the two versions of VCenter (old and new) running at the same time and sharing my data SAN even stores at the same time, are there problems with it?  I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

I installed the first new esxi host and I pointed out to my warehouse of SAN data without any problem. And data warehouses has appeared as they should.  But when I add the new host for the new VCenter, as part of the installation process, it displays all relevant San warehouses.  I thought it was weird to show during the 'Add host' vcenter.  Are there restrictions to running two VERSIONS different VCenter simultaneously on the same data warehouses?

    Thank you.

    HMorris

You can have multiple instances from running in the same environment vCenter server. What you need to take care of, it's that the ESXi hosts that share the same warehouses not have access to each and other virtual machines (i.e. do not add VMS to multiple hosts). Keep in mind that only VMFS3 data warehouses are available in two versions, do not pass the VMFS data store to VMFS5 when running always hosts v4.1.

    > as part of the installation process, it displays all relevant San warehouses

That's ok. When you add a host to vCenter Server it will show that all connected, as well as the VMS data warehouses that are stored on this host.

  • How do I mix the light gray and dark gray so that the line between the two disappears?

I have a picture with a line of demarcation light gray and dark gray.

Is it possible to use a mask with a gradient to mix the two? Not a gradient on the whole picture, but only on the bottom?

I think that's what I'm asking: how to apply a gradient to a layer mask so that it influences only the mask and not the entire photo?

If there is a better way for me to ask the question, I would like to know the terminology.

    Thanks for your help.

    To change your picture as below;

a: I created a new layer and use the tool degraded with forefront and background colors picked on your wall floor and to. This has created a gradient using your background color. Note the gradient does not top down but a little more the third middle.

    b. I created a layer on this new layer mask to reveal everything, but then set a black white gradient at the bottom, just so that the shadow detail would come by

    c. I made a selection of the box then on the gradient layer mask - filled that black - so that the box appeared.

The layers panel is shown below

  • Need help to update to work with the new vSphere environment 6

I have a great powershell script some time ago, I created to clone our production servers in a development environment and configure them for use in isolated vShield development networks.

We have recently updated our environment vSphere vSphere 6 and changed architecture autour 5.

Previously with vSphere 5 we had a unique vCenter server that managed our two datacenters by itself.

With the new design of vSphere 6, we have a PSC and VCSA server to each data center in one area of SSO.

The first thing I did with my script of cloning is up-to-date reference vcenter for a table of two servers, so I connect to two VCs at the same time.

This allows me to see and manage the two vCenters virtual computer guests, so get - vm strives to see the comments of the source.

However, the problem is that when I try to clone a virtual machine from one data center to another, the command fails because it can't find the virtual machine to clone.

    # Virtual Centre server or VM host to connect to
    $aryVIServer = @("vc01.domain.com", "vc02.domain.com")

    # Load VMware environment
    Set-PowerCLIConfiguration -DefaultVIServerMode Multiple -InvalidCertificateAction Ignore -Confirm:$false | Out-Null
    $VIServer = Connect-VIServer $aryVIServer

    # Server cluster group to deploy to
    $strVMCluster = "Bubbles"

    # Define name of new server including environment prefix
    $vmName = "$($envPrefix)-$($CloneServer)"

    # Select Host with least memory consumption
    $selectedHostObj = Get-VMHost -Location $strVMCluster | Sort-Object -Property MemoryUsageGB | Select-Object -First 1

    # Select folder to place VM guest into
    $folderObj = Get-Datacenter -Cluster $strVMCluster | Get-Folder $selectedBubble

    # Select datastore with most available space
    $selectedDatastoreObj = Get-DataStore -VMHost $selectedHostObj | Sort-Object -Property FreeSpaceGB -descending | Select-Object -First 1

    # Clone new VM from running Server
    $newVM = New-VM -Name $vmName -VM $CloneServer -VMHost $selectedHostObj -Datastore $selectedDatastoreObj -DiskStorageFormat "Thin" -Location $folderObj -Confirm:$false

He used to work very well when there was a single VC but of course does not now with two.

So far, the only difference is the change in VCs. We always use the same exact 5.0 running ESXi hosts to the same place in separate data centers.

    Oh and I'm now using powercli 6.3 R1 instead of 5.5 R1.

I look forward to this type of procedure should work fine, and I just need a different command for virtual machine cloning now?

Well, I have solved the first problem according to them here:

Re: Impossible to deploy VM model on different vCenter Server (in the same domain of SINGLE sign-on)

However, now I can't run Invoke VMScript without getting an error that the proxy authentication is required.

If I remove all my proxy settings in Internet Explorer, then it connects fine but this script must be run by a number of engineers without being dependent on their proxy settings are disabled.

I can programmatically change the settings of proxy at the beginning of the script, but nothing not preventing to change those back if they use their browser and break execution of the halfway of script.

Never had any problems with the Proxy settings before and I didn't know any other messages that have directly relevant air.

Anyone know of a way to avoid this?

  • Mix the virtual switch different type in a Cluster and a data center.

Can I mix standard virtual switch and a virtual switch distributed in different hosts to a Cluster/DataCenter? Can I vMotion virtual machine to a host of switch distributed to a host of standard switch and vice versa? Let's assume that the hosts have the same port group name (but have virtual swaitch different type), in the same data center, and have the same subnet IP vMotion.

You can mix standard switches and distributed, that's what we call hybrid architecture... but to be able to migrate virtual machines between virtual switches, you must the vSphere 6 and again there are some limitations, like not be able to migrate from VDS vs.

Have a look here for more details on the cross switch vMotion: http://www.vladan.fr/vmotion-enhancements-vsphere-6-0/

  • Trying to mix tracks at a track that holds the information of right and left

    I use hearing CS6.

I'm trying to mix files containing multiple tracks (up to 10 tracks) with separate left and right signals.

I want to mix down a track and retain the information in right and left.

I am only able to mix and get the left right combined signal. After auto update for Windows I can't keep the left right info but merges in mono 2.

You have these 10 tracks opened in a single session or stereo? If, for some reason, default session of the hearing has been changed in Mono while might produce results that you hear. So be sure that you start a new session as a stereo and use it.

  • New design of the ESX environment design

    Community,.

I could use help on the thoughts, currently there are a few projects concerning the upgrade of components of storage network/etc but I thought on a few different approaches.

Our installation of 175 5.1 ESXi hosts is currently roughly:

    CPU/memory:

According to the model, over the life cycle, we have about 4 different models active (same HW provider), everyone has the storage/NETWORK card configuration below:

    Storage:

2 x 4 GB FibreChannel (connected to different fabrics)

    Network:

    NICs 8 x 1 Gbps

-2 x vMotion (on different switches)

-2 x management (on different switches)

-4 x VM traffic (on different switches)

So what to do in the future? Currently the network is mainly related to 1 Gbit/s because the team of specialists who are not being updated again.

It is not on the creation of infrastructure plans converged etc, but I thought about it.

We have no real problem that will push us in one direction. Because the fragmentation of disciplines each team has a different point of view how to do things.

    Case 1

Keep the current design, but upgrade the network components and storage as needed in the future. It's our way of work now.

    Case 2

Take a look at a converged infrastructure solution? BladeCenter / infiniband?

    Case 3

What network virtualization (VMware NSX) with a convergent solution (or not?)

A few things I want to achieve (no operational requirements (yet))

    -Performance increase/expand

    -Demanding latency

-Lower costs (cables, DC, power, cooling and administration space) in the future

What are your experiences, problems, things to think about, what not to do?

I Don t necessarily need a full explanation (would be nice of course), but if I can get some new thoughts or directions from your answers I could dig into it a little deeper myself. I was wondering based on experiences if it's worth to put more effort into it.

Do not worry about the investment, if it is interesting to build a business case that can help achieve savings, management etc. it might be useful.

Hope to hear from you guys

    Hey Wh33ly,

Breaks down each section a bit here:

Server hardware (CPU/memory, reduce cables ect)

-From this point support CPU/memory is still any provider you have access.  However, the obligation to reduce the latency and cables, you may look at some converged computer worms, or something like a Cisco UCS chassis.  The Cisco UCS chassis has two FI who are sitting on the top of the grille that act as the brains of the operation.  At the rear of the chassis, you will have two IOM failet (failet of input/output) these are the external ports for all blade chassis.  Most configuration I see usually have 20Ggbps coming out of the AKA 2 cables by IOM goes up to the FI or 40Gbps, up aka YEW 4 cables.  Nevertheless the frame Cisco UCS reducing much cables as only cables coming out of the chassis are those of your IOM modules.  The cables only leaving this rack will be those from the FI to your basic network infrastructure.  With this in mind, any Center of blade will usually reduce your cable management and it will also reduce traffic on your network East/West as live all the blades in the same chassis.

Because the calculation is similarly any provider you are with, questions you would have to ask is what are the problems that this chassis resolved during my current infrastructure?  This problem must be a value of extra time and resources it will take to install the new infrastructure and migrate on.

    Networking

-When it comes to networking, nothing wrong with 1 GB but 10 GB price sank so quickly become the default.  Also with 40 GB coming down the pipe very little time this should also lower the cost of 10 GB which can make a little more progress a best migration plan.

-10 GB also reduces the cables that you get 10 cables with a value of 1 speed

-If you decide to go all the 10 GB, you want to consider migration to the VDS switches.  Virtual distributed switches offer many benefits and also allows you to use the new control of NIOC to control how each group of fate as 10 GB ports.  So now, you can define each group of ports on the amount of traffic it gets and how much stock it.  This gives a lot of flexibility

-NSX, NSX is ideal if you want to be able to control your VLAN s, Firewall, VLAN, Speration through Vmware / vSPhere.  This gives a huge amount of automation, flexibility and free service capabilities, but it does NOT increase the speed.  Even with the NSX your sub with connections are always going to be your performance brand bottle neck or a bench.  So if your running all the 1 GB of network even if you move to NSX will always only clocked you at 1 GB.  Yes NSX will give you more flexibility and may also reduce some of the East/West traffic, but your still limited to your physical hardware.  In this spirit, I would say that the biggest assets NSX is if you're a provide service, multitendcy environment, or you require the ability to create a VLAN ect so automation, scripts or self service portals.  Like anything else, I watch NSX as a tool, and if it's the right tool for the job then I use it, if not then I don't have.

Long story short, networking is quickly moving to 10 GB, there is no direct NEED to jump ship as soon as possible, but its something that you might want to look into the establishment of the budget over the next year or two to define yourself to easier transitions.  10 GB also allows backup of the computer virtual a LOT faster that can help with RTO, RPO requirements.

    Storage

All boils down to how much space do you need and how much performance do you need?   One thing is for certain that the SSD is here to stay and will be the future of the SAN.  Almost each SAN vendor now has a solution at several levels, hybrid solution or any SSD solution.  The nice thing about all SAN SSD solutions is that you no longer have to spend cycles administrative construction of storage pools, tweaking them, with groups bronze, silver, gold, for performance.  This all goes with all SSD without that everything is super fast.  That said, there are also many storage solutions converged to come, the local host caching and VSAN type stuff.  It is all the pressure put on businesses in SAN to find ways to be more innovative to make storage and lower prices as its much cheaper to buy 3 guests with drives then just put some kind of Storage Virtualization top layer all to share the lun/storage.  In the next year or 2 you will start to see the space of SAN saturated with many small businesses that make the converged storage, VSAN and cached local solutions duly lower price points.

When your storage decision goes forward, you want to go with the SAN/supplier who offers the best performance for your money and gives you enough space for future growth with IOPS / s.  Tpyically when I size a SAN, I put 2-3 years worth of memory buffer in there for consumtion IOPS / s and space, like the SAN buy is one of the biggest, a COMPUTING organization must do.  If this is done on arrival of the IOPS / s and badly or space in a year it's hard to go back to the honeypot fruitful asking more money again, but also all SSD SAN are that they are still a bit expensive and not always in the budgets of peoples.

    I hope this helped,

If you have any questions please let me know.
