Move the VM of vSphere ESX 3.5?

We have a number of former hosts of ESX 3.5 that won't support vsphere.  An idea we are circulating is "retired" these hosts from active service, but to keep them on a secondary site for a cheap solution for DR, the idea being that if we had a problem in Data Center main we could move critical VMs on the site "backup."  The question is; This will be possible if we improve our Production environment to vSphere?  We assume that it would be impossible to make a vSphere ESX 3.5 hot shot, but would it be possible to migrate a computer virtual powered down "backward"?

Thank you

Gary

as long as all your vmotion needs are met, you can migrate live between ESX4 and ESX3.5 hosts.  I leave the obsolete tools and virtual equipment attached to v.4, until your environment on vSphere4

Also, check out VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager if you have not seen.

  • Move the VMs of VSphere platform to another platform VSphere

    Morning all,

I have to move virtual machines to VSphere platform to another new platform that has just been built.

The two platforms of VSphere are the same (VSpher 4), but one runs by default VSwitch and the new has the software Nexus 1000v switch installed in the new environment. The old platform runs some VMs productions and I was wondering if the ESX host could be disconnected from the bunch on the old platform and moved and connected to the cluster in the new environment, even if each of the platforms have different network configurations. The new environment would be able to see former ESX host and the virtual machines that is held on this subject?

I thought using models of the FVO to migrate virtual machines, but this could be quite tedious.

    Any suggestion would be appreciated

Welcome to the Forums - I assume when you say former vSphere environment to the new your allusion to the virtual Center?

If you are that Yes you can remove your old environment of vCenter ESX hosts and add it to the new vCenter trouble-free environment. This can also be done if the old environment is ESX 35/Virtual Center 2.5 with number

  • Connection to the client with VSphere ESX host makes me download the old version of the VSphere client

    Welcome the OS Version: 5.1.0 - 2013

Question: When I connect to my guests with the VSphere client it forces me to re-download the VSphere client. As you can see from the attached PDF there pretty much all installed versions. Yet, he's trying to go to vsphereclient.vmware.com to try to download again (which cannot because it is on a closed network). It is meaningless to me, as you can see I have all versions of the installed client. My boss who also has the same installed versions can connect. Actually, I installed 5.1 client so that should be enough. VSphere shows the host to 5.1.0 - 2013.

Why is this not with my Vsphere client?

Looks like your Client vSphere is version 5.1.0b (source: Match VMware vCenter 5.1 component Versions |) Virten.NET) and your ESXi host is version 5.1 Patch 4 (KB VMware: Products VMware correlating build numbers to update level )

You need download the vSphere Client 5.1 update 2 version to directly connect to this host.

  • Move VMS between server ESXi and vSphere ESX server

    Dear all,

I want to move some a vSphere ESX server virtual machines to ESXi server.

I understand that some users will use CPS to move between the ESX servers, but apparently not for moving between different products.

I'm just using a slow and prone to error method:

The files of the virtual machine to my deskop PC of vSphere ESX server and then upload to the ESXi server.

I would advise you to please all of the methods that is better than this one?

    Help, please.

    Kind regards

    Tommy

If you got a central storage you can move virtual machines between the two products with vMotion. Since you don't seem to have available vMotion, you pouvez use scp. SCP has nothing to do with ESX/ESXi products. It is a Linux/Unix program which is available in both servers.

So with the CPS, you need a little less.

    The syntax is like:

    SCP - r/path/to/vm/directory user@esxi:/path/to/new/location

  • The migration of the VM from ESX 3.5 data center to data center inside the same building Vsphere

    Hi experts,

Currently, we have 5 servers ESX 3.5 and a San in a shelter in the United Kingdom. This kit is now over 3 years old and the company replaces the complete kit with a new SAN, new servers and Vsphere 4.0.

We have the opportunity to get new equipment to the top and running in the same shelter in Britain and are therefore able to run cable network between the two cabins if necessary.

What is the best way to migrate existing virtual machines from the old environment running to the new environment running Vsphere ESX 3.5? As mentioned only the two cabins will run in the same shelter so nothing needs to go on a WAN link.

IM keen to not load the machines on a USB key and move like that if I can help it. It appears from the research you cannot VMotion from one datacenter to another data center, however I can Storage VMotion between the two by using a method of migration cold?

Any help will be appreciated, thanks

Disconnect a host ESX to the old environment, connect it to the new environment. (this means now that the old host as part of the new vsphere cluster can still see the old SAN?)  Then use this host as the link between the two San as you can see both of them?)

Yes, presentation of the old drive will still be available on the assumption that it was not presentation of your San.  You can use a transit Host, which means that all the LUNS of the old environment and the new are presented to this host, but there will be a migration in a timely.  You have to vMotion invited to this host, unplug off the old environment and then in the new sVMotion (move the host and data store) to the new.  When this is done, unplug this transit host environment and add in the old, vmotion... Rinse and repeat.   Ideally, a presentation of the new LUNS to the old ESX host would be much faster.  In this way, you can bring your old environment together in the new. Make sense?

When I disconnect and reconnect the old host to the new environment, which also happens to the virtual machines on this host? I need to move temporarily turned off?

  • How do I know the thrue VSphere ESX Server?

    Hi all!

I have an ESX 4 server. I can connect with Putty, but the web server is not configured.

The ESX seem to be connected to a server for VSphere.

Is it possible, through a connection of PuTTY, to know the name or IP address of the server BSphere?

    Olivier

I guess when you say vSphere Server, actually talk you to vSphere vCenter that vSphere is simply the family name composed of 4th generation of vCenter and ESX (i) products, etc.

Anywho, yes it is possible, there are probably a few ways to do this (via newspapers, etc.)

    And here are two:

    (1) using the Console of Service of ESX classic

    Take a look at:

    /etc/opt/vmware/vpxa/vpxa.cfg

The result will be something like:

A.B.C.D # ESX Service Console IP
    E.F.G.H # vCenter IP

    (2) using the API vSphere ESX or ESXi

If you know how to use the API or managed object browser, there is a property that is ONLY defined if the host ESX (i) is managed by vCenter server defined by managementServerIp http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vc-sdk/visdk400pubs/ReferenceGuide/vim.host.Summary.html

As we mentioned above, you can see newspapers go or vpxa so that should also have address discovery.

  • Move the vCenter to another cluster... How?

We rotate the camera 5.5.0 vcenter and need to move from a cluster with ESX 4.1.0 hosts in a cluster hosts ESXi 5.5.0.  Two clusters are in the same data center, but no space for common storage.

We have migrated all the old cluster to the new VM using vMotion.  It is now time for the vCenter himself.

How should I go about this?  Some downtime for vCenter is probably inevitable.

    Thank you... Lyle

With the help of Support, here's what I did:

-a clone of the vCenter VM for the cluster target & storage, but do not start the new virtual machine

-change the properties for the new virtual machine so its MAC address is the same as the old VM

-stop vCenter with its interface web admin

-with vSphere client connected to the source host, stop the guest OS (suse) of the former VM

-with customer vSpere connected to the destination host, turning on the new virtual machine

Thanks to all for the comments... Lyle

  • Possible to move the pagefile to lun private?

    Hi all

We currently have a 4.1 complete Vmware vSphere environment that works well off the coast of an Equallogic SAN solution that replicates to an another Equallogic SAN on a DR site.

The problem is that we are seeing massive amounts of replication on the LUN where VM of the resident.  After a discussion with Dell, they said that the Vmware swap file resides in the same lun as the virtual machine and cause large amounts of data exchange / repliaction to occur due to the size of the block min the Equallogic works with.  In this spirit, I know, you can move your swap file host, but this is not recommended.  Is there anyway to move the pagefile to virtual machines to a new LUN which us settle down not for replication?

I intend to move some are less critical file on the host machine just for testing to see if the size data replication that we currently see 3 GB + or change on low VM an actress per day

Long term everything works, but we would like to drop are replication volumes down if possible.

If someone knows something about this any help would be greatly appricated

    Thank you

In the Cluster settings-> location of pagefile you can chose to store the file in the default virtual machine directory, or in an individual data store for each host.

After that enabled, you can set the data store to store the file on each host under Configuration-> VM Swapfile location. Of course, you can point guests in the same LUN it.

I had too many doubt the statement of Support from Dell that the VM swap is responsible for this. Usually, permutation of ESX-side almost never in case if you plan and run your environment correctly. You can view statistics of memory in esxtop vCenter or (r) If no switching occurs.

Another way to eliminate the swapfile completely would be a reserve of memory equal to the size of the memory given on a virtual machine.

This is because once you turn on a virtual machine, a non-reserved memory size swap file will be created for this virtual machine. If you book any memory, no swap file (or only a few KB large dummy file) will be created.

  • Best method to move vCenter VM to another ESX host?

Update Manager has refused to allow us to stage an update for our ESX host our vCenter VM running on. So we have to move the other host our vCenter ESX just update this ESX host. But as we use vSphere Standard that does not come with vMotion and storage vMotion, we must stop vCenter and make a manual transfer.

Did you guys a better method to do that in order to copy files from local storage ESX VM vCenter to the PC running the VI Client on and then copy the file vCenter VM from the PC to the local storage of the other local ESX storage? Because we do not have a usable for the moment SAN storage.

BTW, we tried Storage vMotion with the year evaluation license last to move vCenter and it failed.

We use mainly use the converter for the conversion or 'movement' of VMs from one region to the other because it is a GUI based process.  We have quite a few movements/conversions per week, so we have standardized on the converter.  If we have problems with converter (several failures, etc.) we will perform a dorsal scp of the actual VM files.  I agree that this method is faster, but in our case, we did not want to open the console for jobs like that, it seemed a more dangerous process from the console (deleting files etc...).  We used the converter to convert physical movement to virtual, virtual virtual clone, convert virtual from one version to another (workstation to esx for example).  I also like that the sysprep process can be automated in the process, but also some virtual machine configurations.  If we say PCS had a virtual machine to another location and we created a clone in the new location, we would have to scp, starting the virtual machine and then treat the sysprep (Windows) and rename, configuring ip etc...

  • The upgrade to vSphere + SQL Express to SQL 2005 + new vCenter Server

    Hello world

It's the scénarion that I have today:

A node just two HA/DRS cluster with vCenter 2.5 update 4 and two esx 3.5 update 4.

The environment has increased enough to move from SQL Express to SQL 2005 standard. In the process, I want to upgrade the environment to vSphere and the vCenter move another box.

I'm quite familiar with the process of vSphere upgrade but I donít know how to move the vCenter to another machine AND I do not know how to go from Express to the standard version of SQL in the process. (I have a SQL machine ready for use)

I do not know how to handle all the changes here, I thought it would be nice to all move to the new machine and DB so that I could continue with the upgrade to vSphere, if this has meaning or not, I'm waiting for your ideas.

I hope someone will give me some guidance on moving from SQL Express to SQL and how to move vCenter to another server (of course with a different server name and IP address)

Thanks in advance for your support.

I just did something very similar a few Sundays ago and it was really easy.  Refer to the section of the Upgrade Guide that talks about upgrading to vCenter on another Machine... (starts at p. 49).  We went from SQL 2003 32 bits on 32-bit Windows 2003 to SQL 2005 64-bit on Windows 2008 R2 64-bit.  Both are running as VMs - vCenter 2.5 is still there only as a license server - until I get all my hosts upgraded.

  • The passage to vSphere VMWare Server 2.0?  How?

    Hello-

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here.

I'm under VMWare Server 2.0 on a box of 2300 Windows R2.  After having proven virtualization to management, I bought vSphere. Now I see that I need help to determine the best place to start with this migration project.  I have several questions, I hope someone can help with.

#1.  VMWare Server 2.0 is the box now have is that I want to use with VSphere.  The problem I have is that I have four virtual servers running on this box.  Y at - it a conversion utility to move in and outside this area of VMware Server 2.0 in vSphere environment?   Is it possible to move to something like a Dell EqualLogix (which I have) and box of your choice in the vSphere environment? Should I worry about what it is?  If Yes, what?

#2.  I have four physical servers that I will be the conversion to vSphere?  Is there a tool to help with this?

Tips, links to documentation and of course any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Hello

Welcome to the VMware community forums!

Basically the answer boils down to the use of VMware vCenter Converter

But if you want to reuse the same box for vSphere/ESX you have a little problem with that chickens and eggs for the existing virtual machine

You can however copy the VM out there to external storage and import them manually in vSphere later.

To do this, you may need to use the vmkfstools command line tool to import the disks in the correct format.

    Hope this helps,

  • Move the license to new server

We are biking on the old servers and you need to move the license vsphere from a server that puts us out of service to a new server.

I put the new Server clustered in Eval mode and moved all the guests to him. The old server has more no guests and is ready to be removed from the cluster, how to I release the license on this subject so I can apply it to the new server?

    Thank you

    Eric

Yes, you should completely remove it form your vCenter - perpendicular removed once the client vSphere ESX Server environment and close. Once removed, you can apply the license on the new ESX Server-

If you have followed the procedure to apply the license on the ESX Server properly - close off the vSphere client and reopen the client and the warning of evaluation will be gone
