The passage to vSphere VMWare Server 2.0?  How?

Hello-

I hope someone can point me in the right direction here.

I'm under VMWare Server 2.0 on a box of 2300 Windows R2.  After having proven virtualization to management, I bought vSphere. Now I see that I need help to determine the best place to start with this migration project.  I have several questions, I hope someone can help with.

#1.  VMWare Server 2.0 is the box now have is that I want to use with VSphere.  The problem I have is that I have four virtual servers running on this box.  Y at - it a conversion utility to move in and outside this area of VMware Server 2.0 in vSphere environment?   Is it possible to move to something like a Dell EqualLogix (which I have) and box of your choice in the vSphere environment? Should I worry about what it is?  If Yes, what?

#2.  I have four physical servers that I will be the conversion to vSphere?  Is there a tool to help with this?

Tips, links to documentation and of course any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hello

Welcome to the VMware community forums!

Basically the answer boils down to the use of VMware vCenter Converter

But if you want to reuse the same box for vSphere/ESX you have a little problem with that chickens and eggs for the existing virtual machine

You can however copy the VM out there to external storage and import them manually in vSphere later.

To do this, you may need to use the vmkfstools command line tool to import the disks in the correct format.

Hope this helps,

  • Conversion of the virtual machines in VMWare Server 1.0.5 to vSphere Enterprise

I have a couple of windows XP virtual machines running on VMWare Server 1.0.5.  Can someone point me to instructions for turning them into vSphere (ESXi 4)? The conversion occurs in the vCenter Server or with a separate program?  Thank you!

VMware Converter, which is integrated with vCenter Server and the Client must be able to do this by directing it to the virtual VMware Server 1.0.5 computer files.  You just need to save the pluggin converter in the Client to use vCenter converter function.

  • Cannot save the virtual machine in VMWare Server 2

    Hi all:

I created a VM (12.1 OpenSuSE 32bits) in VMWare Workstation 7; then I copied it to a host VMWare Server 2.

When I try to save the virtual machine via the web, the server fails (or at least interrupts the response from Web page), so I tried to save it via command line.

After searching a bit I found this:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1006160

The question is now that I can't find any vmware-cmd anywhere, and when I run vmware-vim-cmd I get the following error:

    vmh2: / data/vmachines/postgresql-box # vim - vmware - cmd solo/registervm /data/vmines/postgresql-box/postgresql-box.vmx
    Connection failed: vim.fault.NoPermission

So I'm stuck... someone can help me?

BTW: what is ESX, ESXi and what version of ESXi is included in VMWare Server 2?

    Thank you very much

    Luis

I can't tell you exactly what are the causes of the problem. What I would try (a solution) is to create a new virtual machine in VMware Server with the same specifications as the original one, then copy the two files hard in the new virtual machine folder and edit the .vmx file for the new VM 'OpenSuSE - 12.1 - cl1 - 000001.vmdk' use as its virtual drive.

  • Import the virtual machine of VMWare Server 2.0

I want to hang in VMWare Server 2.0 to ESXi 3.5, how to import my VMWare VM for ESXi?

I installed ESXi 3.5 on my test lab server and all I see is an option to import a device and not a VM.

    This feature is still available?

    Thank you

Yes, this feature is available, but it will take VMware Converter - this will allow you to go to your VM VMware Server ESX/ESXi.

  • Import the VCB backups in VMWare Server 2.0 Automatic

    Hello

I had two questions, on which I was wondering...

The real thing, I was wondering all is if someone made a script, fixing up the release of VCB, so it is bootable from a standard VMWare Server 2?

(I think / hope someone has already made as part of an AIP or something...)

The problem is that VCB adds the path of SCSI in the VMDK-filenames, but it does not add it to the VMX file.

If these are mapped to the other the VMX or by renaming the files the VCB is bootable in Server VMW 2.

(but 'less restoreable' of VCB on the other hand...)

This would help me a lot, couse then I could put my VCB backups to an external drive and give the drive to our suppliers

then they test things in the production environment. This could easily be written, but I don't want to invent wheels all my life,

so if others have this I appreciate real...

The second thing I was wondering about is if it is the right part of the forum for these questions, or if they should go under something else...

    Colombia-British

Since the change of name is always following the same convention, I do not think that it is necessary to read the VMX file.

This script deletes the prefix «scsi...» "of all the VMDK files.

    $VCBfolder =
    $vm = # Subfolder in directory $VCBfolder

    $vmPath = $VCBfolder + "\" + $vm
    $oldDir = (pwd).Path
    cd $vmPath
    $files = @(Get-Item -Path "*" -Filter "*.vmdk")
    foreach($file in $files){
      $dummy = $file.Name -match "^scsi\d*-\d*-\d*-(.*\.vmdk)"
      Rename-Item $file.Name $matches[1]
    }

Okay, that means, is not in your server room.

Your computer has several available ethernet network interfaces: eth0, eth0: 0,

    eth0: 1, eth0:2, eth0:3. Which do you want to bridge vmnet0?

Your server has only one physical ethernet interface. But there are multiple ip addresses configured on it. If you want to know, how it works and how it is configured, you can read this page.

You need to reconfigure your network VMware Server 2 to fill the other or several networks. VMware Server documentation is explained on p. 222 and following. In fact, for linux, it is page 229 and includes 'ifconfig' to know what special device (eth0: 0...) what IP address, then run ' vmware - config.pl ' is used to assign the new configuration. But please read the documentation for more details.

Looks like I have no permit, then I downloaded from this URI: http://register.VMware.com/content/registration.html , 50 licenses.

Well, I got a list of serial number 50 this way: XXXXX-XXXXXX.

    XXXXX-XXXXXX...

but... no idea where to put them? !!! I gaze upward in the path, but I can't find any file, I also tried to display the Tomcat logs but nothing, docs wanted...

That is the question:where should I put this serial numbers?

    Thank you.

I know that there was a problem with the 2.0.0 server that did not

Uninstall, then reinstall, then enter the serial number during installation.

  • Failed to get the log in page of VMware Server

    Hello

I'm new to the forum so apologies if I am posting this in the wrong place.

I installed VMware server to December 2008 to use Win XP on it because my laptop is preinstalled with Vista.

It worked all fine and I used it for a few months.

However, I have not consulted for like the past 8 months. Now, I want to once again since, but have not been able to.

If I remember correctly, I used to access the console remotely via Internet Explorer simply log on and it works.

But now when I try - Internet Explorer 8 comes with the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" page and Firefox comes with its 'unable to connect' page.

I tried to go back to IE7 and also repair the installation (by running again the Setup file), but none worked.

After accessing services.msc - I found that all VMware services are or may be given except on the VMware host Agent that does not start.

It comes up with the error message "Windows could not start the VMware host on Local computer Agent. For more information, see the system event log. If it is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor and refer to service-1-specific error code. »

I don't know what to do with it and how to address this issue either.

Any help on this would be much appreciated as I need to check what is on this XP machine.

    Thanks in advance ~

However, I don't know what they mean by disabling the browser service.

Open the service manager in Windows and you can see all the services that are running. One of them is called "browser".

What about rename it pass it directory - do you want to say to just change the name of the folder called "pass" to the place that I installed

VMware Server? If this name should so I change to?

Yes. I suggest "bbrbblllwurbschgarbel" or something that is more readable.

And regarding the uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Server 2.0 - I wanted to ask if that would erase / affect the virtual machines I created?

I tried just to fix the installation but was afraid to uninstall & reinstall.

No it does not affect the guests. If you want to be absolutely sure, create a copy of the virtual machine comments (copy the directory parent of all guests and all the money).

Moreover, I had VMware server operational on this laptop before Vista - it's just I hadn't touched for a long time and now I

    cannot make it work ~

If she had run once it does not mean he always runs on a non supported host OS. A simple patch that changes some .dll could slow everything down.

The other day, I upgraded my work, the latest installation of VMware Server 1 to the latest VMware Server 2 for linux 64. Everything went perfectly with the installation, except for the little matter that now my Windows Vista, Windows XP SP 3 and my VM Windows 2000 are listed as "not valid" in the inventory. They have never worked.

What is the best way to start troubleshooting this?

Sorry we couldn't get you go - I'm sure we could give enough time.

If you have installed from the rpm package you should just be able to uninstall via an RPM EI and then will delete the virtual machines and their associated files.

I thought that I would see how far I could get with the help of VMWare to set up a temporary database server on my machine. However, I couldn't even in what concerns installation, it seems!

My machine is a server on a corporate network and WIndows XP (SP3). My user account has the rights of a local administrator on the computer, and I installed a number of other things on this machine without problems of access rights.  However, when I try and install VMWare on my machine I get a box of selectionneret indicating:

So I tried to restart the machine, check if VMWare products were still installed (they weren't), delete all the entries in VMWare on the registry and I tried to reinstall. But nothing helps, the same problem happened again.

I even following the link in the article KB http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/555175 and tried method 1 (cancellation of registration and re-registration of the Installer) but there is nothing either.

So I'm a bit of a loss what to try next door get VMWare Server 2 installed on my machine. I already had to VMWare Server 1 is installed on this machine (again, using the same login user) but removed during the case to install VMWare Server 2. Currently, I don't have any VMWare products installed on the machine.

  • move Virtual GuestOS in Vmware Server 2.0 to ESX Server 3.5 U4

    Hello

We intend to pass the 3 servers in Vmware Server 2.0 to server Vmware ESX 3.5 U4.

Can anyone tell me please what it takes...

I downloaded the OVF tool and installed, it works very well, so now I know how to create a .ovf from a .vmx file

but the problem is when I created the file .ovf from a .vmx file located on Vmware server 2.0, I got an error when I tried to import it into ESX via VMWare Vcenter... which is:

the family of equipment if the paskage of the FVO is not supported: vmx-07

and ths is true, because the hardware platform where the Vmware Server 2.0 is running is not the same ESX 3.5 server running...

I hope that someone can show me what steps I must take to achieve this...

    Thank you!!

    Best regards

    Tom

I thought that I could simply convert without downloading for ESX as the conversion process runs... but this is not possible

No it's not.  It will make the COPY of the virtual machine, but in order to convert anything, there need duplicate files and make it compatible.  So really all that is done is change of version/type of the VMDK to one that is suitable for ESX read.  It's like the conversion of a pdf document.  Copy you it, but older versions of Acrobat will not able to read the most recent versions.  It's the same, the content is there, simply to make it readable.

  • Find my host PID of virtual machines VMware Server 2.0

    Hello!

With VMware Server 1.x, it was easy for me to find which machine used what PID. I just had to connect to the web interface of VMware Server and voila I could see my names of virtual machines and their respective PIDs.

Now with VMware Server 2 I can't find anywhere them in the web console of VMware!

Instead I use Process Explorer (and market - I find that PID is related to computer)...

Anyone has any idea where I can get this info quickly in VMware software/console/whatever?

    Thanx.

Sorry, I was showing you the contents first to design you what you actually wanted.

Try the attached vbs script that isolates the configuration file .vmx and PID for you.
