Move VM between data warehouses

What is the fastest way to move a virtual machine between two warehouses of data on the same host ESXi?

I Don t use vCenter. The disks are thick lazy available at zero and about 400 GB in size.

Follow these steps:

  • power off the virtual machine (do not suspend)
  • delete the virtual machine of the inventory
  • Open the data store with the virtual machine file
  • in the left pane, select the root folder and in the right pane, select the folder of the virtual machine
  • then either click on the "Move" icon or right click on the folder and select "move to".
  • Once moved, open the browser to store data to the new data store
  • Right-click right the VM .vmx file and choose "add to the inventory.

    I added a new data store to a vSphere 5.5 infrastructure and created a few scheduled tasks to migrate under tension on the virtual machines between data warehouses.

    The migration is successful, but on the source data store, I still see a lot of files for some migrated VMs, including the .vswp and vmware files - xx.log.

    This means that the scheduled task has failed?

    What have I to do to completely move virtual machines?

    Should I turn off and turn on the virtual machine?

    Concerning

    Maybe this file are simply zombie files, generated cause an improper shutdown of the VM (take a look at the date of creation/modification of files). You can try to rename these files, if you are able to do so, these files aren't really in use. After you rename and make sure that the virtual machine works as expected, you can manually delete the files.

  • Move VM between data on the same vCenter centers

    Hey all the...

    With a virtual machine off, I'm migrating a VM between data centers in the same vCenter. There is no shared storage, different networks to the destination host. The user interface works (caveat about the missing shows destination network), yet move-vm does not work between data centers.

    By train: move-vm - vm test-20150309 - destination esx1 datastore - datastore1, I get the error:

    The manual States -Destination can be file, host, cluster etc... As the hosts AND records are bound by data centers, I guess it must know the new host & the new folder. I tried to use - destination twice, and I've tried - destination host, folder.

    Move-VM: cannot bind parameter because the 'Destination' is specified more than once. To provide several parameter values that can accept multiple values, use the table syntax. For example, '-parameter value1, value2, value3 ".

    Move-VM: missing an argument for the parameter "Destination." Specify a parameter of type 'VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Types.V1.Inventory.VIContainer' and try again.

    I used PowerCLI 5.8 and tried on 5.0 and 4.0 vCenter.

  • Storage vmotion, between data warehouses when the block size is different

    Hi all

    I would like to know, is it possible to do a vmotion of storage between two data warehouses, when they have different block sizes. The case is as a former vmfs data store 3 which has been upgraded direct to vmfs5 there, but since it has been updated it maintains its own block size. While the newly created vmfs datastore 5 a block size of 1 MB.

    Thus, storage Vmotion will work in this case? It will fail OR will be with degraded performance?

    Finally, storage vmotion is possible even if you do not have a cluster DRS for storage?

    Thank you

    Yes you can!

  • Can you pass offline virtual machines between data warehouses using the 'Migration' with the basic Kit Essentials feature?

    I speak not of Essentials Plus vMotion between hosts or migration of VMS between hosts and data warehouses online. Just curious to know if its possible to off a virtual machine and click the button to migrate to another store of data with the basic Essentials bundle.

    Welcome to the community - Yes you can - it's what we call a cold migration.

  • Cold using vMotion migration between data warehouses

    To perform a migration cold between 2 not the source ESX servers and the host ESX destination need to see two data stores?

    I have a host ESX 3.5 with 1 data store called data01 and a host ESXi 5.0 with a data store called data02. Using vCenter to manage the two ESX host - what I want to turn off a virtual running on the 3.5 host computer and perform a migration cold, including a data store move to 5.0 host.

    Can this be achieved?

    I am unable to storage area presented to the ESX host 3.5 to the host of 5.0 and also unable to storage 5.0 to 3.5 host.

    The OP is talking about a cold migration.  In the scenario described, it doesn't have to be a shared storage.  As long as the migration cold remains in the same instance of vCenter, there should be no problem.

  • Get-hard drives - storage drives data store migrate between data warehouses

    Hi all

    Our current storage configuration with specially designed split-role of the bases of data storages (OS, LOG SQL, SQL DATA, APP, Exchange roles, etc.)  I do a storage store on my VMware Infrastructure and hoped to target only the disks of virtual machines that are on any data store and migrate them to another.  Rather new to PowerCli if you're wondering why the bellows of the command does not work and the reports that the file is locked.

    Get-hard drive - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Moving-hard drive - data store Datastore02

    If the machine virtual itself is made aware of the command?  Would I have to enumarte the virtual machines on the first data store and then target discs that everyone has and redirect it to the hard disk Move command?

    Thanks in advance

    Yes, you are banging in the sequence of commands trying to move a file on the data store without referencing the virtual machine. According to the State of the virtual machine (lit or not) of different things happen

    • VM power off - the disc is moved and the virtual machine is broken (the vmx file will always point to the original location for the HD that is no longer there)
    • Virtual MACHINE power - the disk is locked, so it cannot be moved (the error you have seen)

    Another thing to keep in mind is that the configuration of the VM is also on a data store, so if you want to move the entire virtual machine you can just move the hard drives

    If all the virtual machines on a data store have all their HDs on this data store then you can do something like

    Get - VM - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Move-VM - data store "Datastore02".

    To access the VM configuration, but also his records. If you have virtual machines where the disks into a single virtual machine, then you will have a little more work to do to sort the records that must be moved

    Get - VM - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Get-hard drive | Where-Object {$_.} FileName.Contains ("[Datastore01]")} | Moving-hard drive - data store "Datastore02".

    This is all virtual machines with a component (hard drive or configuration) on Datastore1, and then for each VM is all hard disks that are on Datastore01 and the Datastore02

    You can check VMRelocatedEvent with Get-ViEvent.

    Something like that

    $targetVM = "MyVM.

    $finished = $false

    {while(!$finished)}

    If ((Get-Date) Get-VIEvent-Start. AddMinutes(-15) - MaxSamples ([int]: MaxValue) |

    where {$_-is [VMware.Vim.VmRelocatedEvent] - and $_.} {Vm.Name - eq $targetVM)}

    $finished = $true

    }

    else {}

    Sleep 30

    }

    }

  • EX 3.5 migration of VMS between data warehouses

    Hi all

    Don't know if this is location of correctr but I don't know that it will be moved required

    Scenario - I have a very small server ESX 3.5 with VM hosted on 6. We recently plugged in and set up a SAN and I'm trying to migrate servers from local storage to the San, one at a time. I wrote a script that works on the my ESX 3.5 bed test system, but does not work on my production system. I can't the biggest hard drives on the production system to copy. I run the script as a scheduled task on Saturday afternoon, after I have confirmed that my backup of vRanger connection is completed. I reason I do a "cp" oppsoed suddenly, I like the idea of being able to fall back to the original virtual machine is required. I know that most of the script is working as I can see the original virtual machine power off or not and all the files except the VMDK copied during the local storage to the San.

    I have attached the script that I use as well as the log file which follows from the weekend final run. Can someone please take a look and see what I'm doing wrong? It's driving me crazy.

    Only, we have unique ESX connected to the San, and don't use vmotion. The SAN is connected and (I hope) properly configured.

    What files are missing? Compare your source files and destination, in the case. You can also watch this http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1000936 Ko to verify if you don't a not build anything.

    Your script worked on another host, it should also work on that one.

    Good luck.

  • Great move VM to new data warehouses

    Read some of the other discussions on this topic... I have a slight twist... can someone offer some guidelines\options on the best way to move a very large virtual machine

    starting from a NetApp array to an array of EMC VNX.  The virtual machine has 4 discs - including 1 + to 2 each and is currently running on an ESX 4.0 host.  We want to move the

    warehouses of data and comments to a new host ESXi 5.  Can be 2 steps if necessary.  No downtime will be difficult and should be kept to a minimum.  I used vMotion

    and the converter.  A test of vMotion generated a complaint of block size.  Converter is very slow and often times out.  If the prompt can be turned off, I can use the data store

    browser to move the. VMDK, then the .vmx unregister\re-registry.  Slowly perhaps, but should be better than the converter.  Unfortunately, the 4 discs are all separate data storage

    and therefore do not reside with the dtatastore containing the .vmx.  Can I still do this by changing the .vmx to point to the new locations of disc?

    The reason why I try whether the Storage vMotion is possible, is mainly to avoid outages. With ESXi 5 host that has access to all data warehouses, you can storage vMtotion the power VM, VMFS versions no matter what and block sizes. However, keep in mind that migration between different block sizes is slower than the migration with between the warehouses of data with the same block size.

  • displacement of the configurations of lab manager between the ESX server host computers / data warehouses

    Hello

    Is it possible to move configurations of lab manager between the ESX server host computers / data warehouses? I don't see an option in the library & gt; Clone library. Thank you!

    Recently, I used SSMove to migrate our datastore LM set a new LUN.  It's really simple to use.  This KB gives complete instructions on SSMove http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1006694&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=8456583&stateId=0%200%209407965

  • I have a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses, and I need to move

    Okay, I'm trying to reconfigure the storage on a cluster of ESXi to software development, and I fell on a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses.  Somehow, the user has configured this thing to have most of the VM files on the data store 5 while all the vmdk but the residence on the data store 1 boot drive.  He probably did it because of the size of the old warehouses of data and the many VMs older than his colleagues left sitting.  Well, now I just reconfigure data warehouses so that there is more usable space, but I can't move this machine a virtual so that I can reconfigure the rest of storage.  (For reference, the old warehouses of data have been implemented in 4 sets of three disks in RAID 3 and a set of four disks in RAID 3 with two drives hot spare.)  For the record: not my idea.  I am reconfiguring them now to be a set of 15 drives in RAID 6, divided into two LUNS on both controllers, with a hot spare.)

    Well, now I need to figure out how to get this VM is spent at one of new data stores.  The data migration store feature does not work.  Any recommendations?

    Hi Dangingerich,

    You can move the VMDK individually with the advanced functionality of storage vMotion allows you to ask the data disk on your new storage space and then have the OS disk track.

    Screenshots

    When you svMotioning click on the Advanced button

    Here you can select the individual VMDK and move.

    PS We are new to Informatica workflow maps to find it very difficult to understand each mapping for each table.

    You can use the guide to table HR analytics on metalink. Here's the note:

    HR Analytics, Oracle Business Intelligence - Source tables uses [ID 1328607.1]

    This will show you the use of the main table. If you need the full line, you can use the data lineage Guide.
