MS Security Essentials is as good as Norton or McAfee?

Is it good?

You pegged this square; We have all different opinions on A / v software   :)

If Norton has managed to cut down on their use of resources, good for them.  I'm all for it.

But one of the things that I don't like on their subject is seeking in fact to be a-all, End - All app to fix everything. I prefer just a little freeware dedicated to antivirus app.  For my system work stuff, I prefer to do it myself.

Yet once, if I'm a guy very "practice" of the person.  Easier to learn that way. I tend to break a lot of stuff.  :)

Take care

Good news is THAT MSE is showing protection is enabled and given that you do not receive notification of Security Center advising the firewall is not enabled it can be assumed that it is enabled. Bad news is that I don't have an answer. You have any other real time protection(Avast, AVG, etc.) currently installed? What, if any, previous protection in real time of programs have been installed and they did include a firewall? You made using tools and methods to remove properly uninstall completely?

I would use microsoft security essentials, but currently norton on my new processor.  The trial version is over so I am currently unprotected.  I don't understand how to go to add/remove programs and uninstall.  Last time, I uninstalled a program of security, he seemed to randomly take important files with it.  Is there something specific I need to do to ensure that I won't screw up my cpu when I remove norton?  I am running windows 7 on a new processor, do not know if you need to know that or not.  Thank you.

Here's what I use and recommend:

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with everything I threw
at home. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx also proved very reliable and
compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.

Avast Home free - stop any shields isn't necessary except leave Standard, Web and network
    running.

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(Sometimes you have to temporarily turn off with the little icon to the LEFT of the + at the bottom right)
    Internet Explorer)

Two versions of Avast are available 5.x and 4.8 x

Avast - home - free - 5.x stop shields you do not (except files, Web, network, & behavior)
-double click the Orange in the Notification area - real-time shields - click on the shield that you want
stop-STOP. Stop the Orange icon to display an indicator of error - click on the Orange icon-
Right click - settings - high status bar - uncheck shields you disabled - click OK
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Avast 4.8 x - home - free - stop shields, you don't need except leaving Standard, Web, and
Operation of the network. (Double-click the blue icon - details look OK. - upper left Shields - cancel)
    the ones you don't use).
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#TAB4

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - Home - small, fast, exceptional CLOUD free protection, working with other security programs.
It is a single scanner, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something to come back here or use Google to see
    How to remove.

    PCmag - Prevx - Editor's choice
    http://www.PCMag.com/Article2/0, 2817,2346862,00.asp

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever suspect malware, and it would be
UPDATE of the unusual with Avast and Prevx operational except for an occasional low level (not much) cookie,
It and then run it as a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they never find anything of note since I
    started using this configuration.

  • Microsoft Security Essentials would conflict with Norton Security Suite?

I have Norton Security Suite on my computer, provided by my ISP.  I've heard very good things about Microsoft Security Essentials.  Can I install it or it would conflict with Norton?

It is never a good idea to use 2 applications of malware in real time.  It is also unnecessary.  Use one or the other.

It was me I'd use MSE, Symantec causing much too much gel, crashes and is almost impossible to remove.

  • Should I Norton and Microsoft Security Essentials Virus protection?

I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials for a long time; but I keep getting popup windows telling me that they cannot provide protection against viruses because they did not have a virus to day something - or - others.

Two windows appear, one after the other, both have an error number. If I followed the instructions I always come back to a selection of Norton anti packages of virus which must be repaid, which I don't want. That's why I installed Microsoft Security Essentials, because I was sick of seeing these things and try to follow the instructions always with the same results.

Recently, I clicked on something in laptops and has seen a long list of time that requests had been made by Norton get me their updates - it was very very long.

I don't know what it is all about - what it means? I find it more than an irritation. These pop-ups will light up whenever I start the computer. Can I stop this?  Do I have Norton and Microsoft - I realized that any previous protection system would be obsolete when I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Hello

    NO.

You must have AN antivirus installed

If you have more then AN installed anti-virus you will most likely system issues because there is a conflict between norton and MSE

Uninstall norton using the below norton removal tool

Just installed Windows 7.  Rid of Kaspersky and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials.  Good choice?  And do I need anything else?

Kaspersky is a great AV program But for a free option, MSE is also very good. Nothing will catch 100% of things, but MSE is one of the few that do a great job!

You may download Malwarebytes and run the free version, make a weekly scan. These two together can usually keep your system very clean and safe.
But do not forget also to navigate safely. Do not download random programs or open attachments that aren't expected, etc...
  • How is good compared to windows security essentials windows Defender I run vista ultimate 64 bit

When I run security essentials on my vista ultimate 64 bit pc that I do not in the Add Remove programs and stop some programs from running at startup to the top is normal, because it is not happened on my old windows xp,

MSE (microsoft security essentials) stops Windows | Defender.

Therefore, you will not be able to access Windows Defender in order to change some startup programs.

If this is your problem, here's another way to go to start programs...

Start > Search box, type msconfig > press enter > at the top, click on start > here is the list of startup programs.

To disable, uncheck the box in front.

    Press OK when finished.

    > I can't enter in Add Remove programs...
    Why not?

In Vista, it called programs and features, not add/remove.

  • How can I get Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus security?

After another year of Norton 360, I got the stupid games of Symantec, tired of the ot, uninstalled and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials.  I restarted my computer (Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Pro 2002).  After that, I ran services.msc impatiently as my program of service to show that my antivirus security worked and I had nothing to fear.  Imgine my grief when my service center reported that my computer was always subject to viruses, worms, Trojan horses and other forms of malware.  I thought, perhaps, I had reduced the activity of some vital download too quickly and, therefore, have prevented a good download.  So I tried again, this time with a lot more patience...   This time, I received a message that the program was already on my computer, asking if I wanted to replace it with the new download.  Because the first time I acted in a hurry, I replied that I tried the second download try replacing the Lerna, this time with a lot more patience.  There is no apparent change that showed the Security Center: no protection against the virus.  How can I get Microsoft Security Essentials to act as my antivirus program and my Security Center to recognize it as such?

    Hi David,

Glad to hear thiings are better. Do not forget to chek that MSE will automatically update the definitions that every 24-48 hours and regular tests are carried out. Also suggest that you go to settings > default Actions and change to quarantine all. don't forget to 'Save changes'. This is recommended to avoid problems such as potentially unwanted programs and the removal of the odd false positive.

You are definitely not alone in your skepticism about Norton and other paid for antimalware solutions.

Feel free to mark my initial response as response and/or useful.

    Have a day without malware.

    Kind regards

  • F ensure Versus Microsoft Security Essentials

I am trying to install the Charter security on my computer. Cannot install without uninstalling M. Security Essentials. How can I do this? I can't find any where to uninstall. Maybe I need to stick with MSE

It is a controversial topic, but your choice of AV software may be something you want to take a 2nd look.  I suggest you visit this website to get an idea of what AV software made the best work, depending on what type of user you are: http://www.av-comparatives.org/ is a non-profit that has been around for a long time and I hope that their results.

When you interpret these results, remember the difference between a product that detects 95% and the other 99% of infections, it is actually 5 times more likely to allow an infection.

I pick up after about 150 Windows PCs and I have more than 13 years.  Until last September, the only AV software that I would allow my clients to use was Norton Antivirus.  Note that this is not the same as any other product, Norton 360 or Internet Security.

Last September, Symantec (Norton owner) decided to no longer sell such a product.  After much research, I decided on Bitdefender Antivirus 2015 +.  I installed it on most of these PCs to date and has never been a problem, and it has been on a course of about 11 months now...  It is a better product than Norton. It is also cheap. One of the things I love the most about it, is the silence and discretion.  Especially if silenced you its function "portfolio".

My customers know that if they install any product of 'Internet Security', I won't work on their computers until it is deleted.  Very well, I learned the hard way that the other components of these products (other than the AV itself) IS caused more problems than any profit that they bring and work primarily by stopping the Windows component that does a very good job of this particular task still.  My problem is that when I started to work on a computer with an IS on it, I could spend hours trying to diagnose the problem, only to find out that by taking the product of the IS, the problems have become much clearer and easier to solve.  I think that the product of the IS actually hides the problem.

As I said.  It is a controversial topic and you will find many different very strong opinions.  I know that mine is based on a fairly large sample over a long period, and are consumers of consumer type Windows.

Another thing you need to know: you can delete not entirely of most any AV software simply by using the standard uninstallation tool Windows 7.  Most of the majors also publishes a "removal tool" that gets the rest.  If you do not completely remove it, it will cause very hard to understand and diagnose problems.

Original title: Microsoft 7 Pro problems

    Hi Gordonaumick,

I apologize for the inconvenience. I appreciate if you could help me with more information.

    1. What is the exact problem you face on Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)?

    2. you receive an error message/code when using MSE?

    3. what equipment you are unable to recognize on Windows 7?

Check that you have removed all other anti-malware real-time products that were already installed on your PC, including free products / trial that were installed when the PC was purchased (Norton, McAfee, TM, AVG, OneCare, Malware bytes (paid), etc.).

Note: If you use more than one antivirus or antispyware program at the same time, your PC may know a decrease in performance, become unstable, or restart unexpectedly. Before you install Microsoft Security Essentials, or if you want to solve problems with Microsoft Security Essentials, including the update of issues, you must first completely remove your PC Internet security programs.

You may have to uninstall/reinstall MSE. You should be able to remove MSE of the Control Panel. Uninstall problems see: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/uninstalling-mse/a63b8c4b-58ed-437e-8086-fa08d80725a4

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
