My computer was struck by lightning

I had to replace the motherboard and cpu with different components than the original. Can I still use & turn on the windows xp home operating system that comes with it?

Hi PearlMyrvik,

Once you replace the hard drive (HDD) and the motherboard, you will need to reinstall the operating system. However, you can use the same product key and activate it.

I suggest you try to activate your copy of Windows use the phone activation and check if it works.

CS2 version is only compatible with up to Windows XP, if you try to install the new operating system, it might give you errors.

Also, the activation server is unavailable for the CS2 versions.

  • Acer Aspire 5336, struck by lightning...

Hello everyone! I'm new here so sorry if someone asked this question...

There is one in my laptop (Acer Aspire 5336) were struck by lightning, this sense that I was using an ethernet cable at the time where my house was struck by lightning, electricity traveled down through my router (that knocking out) and ended up on my laptop.

I was a little scared and worried. I tried to turn on my laptop eventually, but it would power about 3-4 seconds and then crash. So I thought that my laptop has been screwed.

Hey well a year. I started thinking why don't I just fix it? I really do not have the money to buy a new laptop, and because I get a motherboard for £30 I thought: why not?

What my question is... My laptop can indeed be repaired by replacing the motherboard?

I've seen people post online about how it can be fixed by replacing the motherboard, but I'm very skeptical about it incase it is another problem and not the motherboard.

The computer is 4 years old, so it is not covered by the warranty. And I don't have the money to get it repaired by a professional.

If someone could help me with this question, I would be very grateful

change the motherboard on a laptop, it's like change of 99% of the material, so 99% that it will solve your problem.

in my opinion, I just fix it if I found a very good motherboard cheap, less than $ 150.

Hi Pat. You need to change your password of e-mail of course but not in front of you, either remove malware from your computer or format and install Vista. Exactly what the problems are, other than your email, you encounter? What do you mean also 'filled my c/hard disk 233 GB'? Please give as much detail as possible.

  • Our computer was accessed remotely this afternoon, how can we prevent this?

We have a Mac Mini, with OS X 10.6.8 using NetZero DSL as our internet provider and Firefox as your browser. Our computer was accessed remotely through LogMeIn (rescue), but it seems that the person or the group failed to hack into our computer. Are there settings in Firefox that could prevent this from happening in the future? Thank you...

Firefox is a web browser not a firewall.

I agree that it's more to do with your operating system and the LogMeIn software on ensuring that only you have access when you need to.

  • My computer was stolen from an authorized Apple store, but the store refuses to adequately replace my computer. What should I do?

    Good afternoon

I bought my macbook in-store London´s Regent Street and went to visit Colombia. My computer broke down and so I went in an authorized Apple store, INext in Santa Marta. Here is their website: www.inextstore.com.co

On 27 January, after three months of waiting for a spare part (who said they originally would take a week or two to find), I was told the part couldn t be found, and they offered to buy me my computer. I said, I think about it but smelled something suspicious, and returned to the store a few days later to get my computer and the money back guarantee, when another Member of staff told me that it had been stolen on 16 January, that is before the day where they offered to buy my computer! This means that during ten days after the flight, they don't warn me the flight and even tried to hide from me. So, I realized that they had lied to me.

Whatever it is, they offered me a second hand computer to replace my only, but they want to keep the money I paid in advance for the repair, as they claim that my computer was not working. I can't trust them more that they have already lied to me, and they could give me a computer of second hand with no original parts. As of today, they still have the money I paid for the replacement part that never happened and I Don t have a computer.

Nobody knows, outside to report them to the authorities, if there is anything else I can do? I already wrote to Apple to let them know about the behavior of their authorized dealer, but any additional siggestions would be great.

    Thank you!

It's very awkward, Zorba777.   You talk about a country that does not have the kind of laws for the protection of consumers that you will find in the United Kingdom (or USA).   And I imagine that the legal side would be difficult to implement, too.   Anyway...

Advisor Apple was a good idea.   Apple needs to know these things.

If you were there as a tourist, talk to their tourist Office.

If you have a receipt for any of this transaction and was assured, approach your insurers.

If this last road is taken, you must first report the matter as the theft to local police (and get a report number).

Your insurers will require the it.

    Good luck.

No. I have not experienced this before, after having turned off. It seems that your Mac was not completely extinguished before you he packed. Make sure that it is actually stopped before closing the lid.

  • I think that I have been scammed by the company supposed to work for windows saying that my computer was about to crash

A company called vap technology called me last night on my phone at home and said to my computer was about to crash. they were Indian speaking people and said they were working for microsoft support; as I am not a laptop user profficent of long date, I couldn't tell if they were or not. How to get back money from $149, I paid them to fix the problems and how to uninstall the programs they put on my laptop; also what can I use to tell if it's a microsoft technology? Help!

    It is a scam. See:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx .

If they have access to your PC, they can install any number of malicious programs. My recommendation is to do a clean reinstall of Windows - it's the only way to be sure that your system is clean.

If you have them paid by credit card, tell your card provider immediately what has happenend.

All the data on your computer (passwords, credit card numbers, numbers of account documents, etc.) may have been compromised (they may not know now). According to the companies concerned (for example your bank) what happened.

Use another PC to change passwords.

    Consider telling your local police.

  • appellants informed me windows guarantee has expired, said my computer was about to crash and they controlled my computer outside, some icons began to disappear on the desktop. I turned off the computer.

2 people called me on my home phone, told me that they were Microsoft Windows, that I got error report to Microsoft from my computer and they went into my computer remotely and was told that they could fix.   They said that my Windows guarantee had expired (on a less than 1 year old computer) and wanted to sell me a 1 year for $ 25 years more more money.   I told them that I need to check.    Less than 10 minutes passed and another call.  It's when they said my computer was crashing.   I told them it was covered by insurance, they hung up.   I haven't lost a few programs but nothing that I can't live.   They have external access to my computer.   First thing I had to do was press on keyboard and the letter r windows icon as it took me to a Web site called showmypc.com.   These people really represent Windows - Microsoft?   If this isn't the case, who should I report it to?  They also originally (before I have them checked) gave me a call back number in case I changed my mind.   1800 651-2595 but told me it would cost me 125.00.

I got a phone call from someone who said they were from microsoft and my computer was in danger, unless I paid 130 pounds for a new warranty, is it a scam?

    Hi Debra,

It's a SCAM! Microsoft does not make that neither have they partners that do and don't they hire contractors or individuals or even to find volunteers to do. There are probably thousands of these companies out there do every day - we get two or three posts like this (or more) each day ask about it. You are lucky who have recognized the scam enough not to be sucked in and eventually identify theft, infections, hacking your computer, convince you to buy software or services you either did not need or that do not really exist at all and all sorts of nefarious stuff. You'd be surprised how much contact us AFTER THAT that they realized they had been duped asking what to do. Don't waste time talking to these people, not give them any personal information it is, don't be fooled by what they can get allows you to see on the computer - in fact, not do anything they suggest on your computer or even to visit Web sites they recommend and for the love of God don't give them access to your computer.

Microsoft knows this is happening, but with these companies popping up like dandelions, or closing and changing names when discovered and operating mainly from abroad, it would take an army of lawyers to sue each other. They do the best they can, but they are just too many and more added every day. People need to pay attention to these things. They occur not only by telephone, but also by e-mail, instant messaging, mail and all the ways imaginable. Forget not that Microsoft doesn't this and hang up or remove the emails or messages or mail from someone claiming that they do because they know the information on your computer or that you want to get information from you to confirm your account so that it will not be closed and asking you your name of user and password and all sorts of other personal information. Microsoft DO NOT!

See below for additional information on this topic and what to do and how Microsoft works:

I'm glad you don't get captured by these crooks and save yourself a big headache. Continue to use the same caution and you should do fine.

    Good luck and best wishes!

This is a complete scam.  You can report it to your local police.

For your own protection, you should:
    • Change your passwords on email accounts, accounts financial and sensitive to which accounts you access online from this PC.  RIGHT NOW!
    • Run a full scan of your PC using your antivirus application...    Also download and run a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free edition).  MBAM is a very good solution in addition to your primary backup antivirus/antimalware application.
    • I would also go here: https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Shared/Help.aspx and follow the advice of "I think that my PC is infected", including potentially calls MS help.
    • Above all, do not delay!  If you have any concerns about the handling of it, then disconnect your computer from the internet and call MS before anything else.
  • Received the phone call from Tech Dept of Win.Op.Sys.Suport told me my computer was sending messages of error and called my CLSID? is it a hoax?

    Dennis Clarke cited my CLSID

How did get my phone number?

How did get CLSID from my computer?

Is this a hoax OR an attempt to get (more) into my computer?

Think this will answer your questions - it's a scam similar to that discussed in this thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/just-had-a-call-regarding-ammyy-admin-is-it/ead4bc40-75a3-4383-b539-7d01a83f32ae
