My external hard drive missing from my computer

Hi everyone is smarter than me... which would include about each of you.  ;-)
I have a Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive connected to my laptop Dell Inspiron 6000 Intel Pentium clocked at 1.86 GHz proc running Windows XP V2002 Pro 32 bit SP3. Until a few days ago the WD is working fine since I bought it about 3 years ago.

The problem: the drive is listed in the device as Manager works fine but it does not appear in my computer. I reinstalled the WD software and run the diagnosis that came back with a mistake or two test and repair but not yet in MyComp. I searched the entire computer, but the E: drive is not there. I have studied this thing to the end, including the proposed solutions on Microsoft here, but I am against the wall and do not know what else to do.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Mike

Me = SHOUTING, CHEERING, YELLING, CELEBRATING, essentially going nuts!  :-)

Guess what, y ' All? I found my Western Digital external hard drive!  I'm so excited!  I was not happy that since my children were born.  Laughing out loud.

AND I OWE IT ALL TO TECH-GEEK! THANK YOU 1 BILLION, JILLION AND GAZILLION, BILLIONS OF TIMES!

Your post today mentioning external hard drive to your customer and how you had retrieved all the data using http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk, it's what saved my life! I spent very little time on their site and very little time running of the programme and BING POW ZOOM! My drive is back, fully intact, not a single missing file!  I think it's all because I was able to give the drive a name (you know, L for logic and so forth). Because as soon as I wrote the files on the disk - which literally seconds - restarted, and BINGO! She's back in my computer!

I can't begin to even formulate words to properly express how I am grateful to you, TG. I am most grateful. Can I make a donation to your charity in your name?

A BAJILLION THANKS!
Mike

Right-click on computer and select manage, then disk management.

    Hello

You can restore files from a BKF file on an external hard drive on the computer by using the Windows XP Backup Wizard. The Backup Wizard is installed by default in Windows XP Professional, but not in XP Home. XP Home users can install it from an installation of Windows XP Edition family CD.

Follow the steps mentioned below and check if the problem persists.

    a. install the backup on Windows XP Edition family Wizard, if it is not installed. Record of the family place of the Windows XP Setup CD in the hard disk of the computer and install the wizard by clicking "Start", click "My computer," double-click the CD icon in the window my computer, double-click the "ValueAdd", by double-clicking on the folder "Msft", by double-clicking "Ntbackup" and clicking on "NTBackup.msi."

    b. connect the external hard drive to the computer.

    c. open the Backup Wizard by clicking on "Start", "All programs", "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Backup".

    d. click "Next" in the Welcome window.

    e. click "Restore files and settings", then click "next".

    f. click "Browse" in the window "to restore", click "Browse" in the "Open file Backup" window, click on 'My Computer', double-click the hard drive and double-click the BKF file.

    g. click the boxes left the files desired under "What to restore," then click "next".

    h. start the transfer by clicking on "Finish".

    i. click 'Close' when prompted.

Start Windows Explorer and locate the data that you want to transfer, select it and press on and hold down the CTRL key while tapping the c. key on the new hard drive and locate where you want to place the data and press Ctrl + V to paste the data.

  • What is a "device i/o error. (0x8007045D) concerning the transfer to an external hard drive to my new computer?

I backed up the files from my old computer Visa on a 1 TB hard drive.  I now need these files on my new computer.  I have a Mac with Parallels (virtual Windows 7) running on it.  I get the above error when you try to copy the files on the Mac or the side of Windows, Mac.  What is the solution to do this, to be able to copy the files?  Thank you!

    Hello

Try running chkdsk on the external hard drive to check if there are errors.

    1. Click Start, type cmd in the start search box, right-click cmd.exe in the list programs and then click Run as administrator.

    2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

    3. at a command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:

    CHKDSK X: /R

Note in this command, x is a placeholder that represents the drive letter of the volume you want to check.

    4. press y when you are prompted to check the drive the next time the system restarts.

    5. close all applications and restart the computer. Note When you restart, Windows checks the drive for errors, and then Windows starts.

    6. after that restart the computer check if you are able to move files on your hard drive.

Important: when running chkdsk on the drive hard if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on which data may be lost

  • reloading the files of the external hard drive to the new computer laptop

I'm trying to reloaded files etc. from an external hard drive to my laptop. I took the files of my old office that was on is way out, so just in case I lost them all I copied them. I tried setting up my external hard drive and transfer just a couple of files just to see if it would work. I sent them to my desktop from my laptop and they also went to my documents, but once the hard drive is disconnected files will not open. I do not know what I'm dong wrong as I am not very computor spirit, so that the answers would be useful in silly English thank you. Sorry to be so long-winded.

    Hello @shedeval

I understand that you have copied your files on an external drive from your old computer.

You tried to copy the files to the new computer, but when you disconnect the external hard drive the files are no longer accessible.

I think that you have created or copied a shortcut to the new computer and not the actual files.  When you're logged out outside the new computer had more disk access to open files.

I would like to redo the copy and when you finished externally, log out and then try again.

    Good luck!

  • External hard drive not in my computer

    Hello

I have a question on my external hard drive. It's a drive hard 2.5 "of Toshiba (1 GB).
I used it already for a long time on my laptop (WINDOWS VISTA) and it worked perfectly until today. I plugged in my hard drive as
usual and it does not appear on my computer. I looked on the internet and found something about research
    Start - Run diskmgmt.msc, (uitvoeren) - so I tried.
He showed the next thing on my HARD drive:
    Disc 1
    Unknown
    931,51 GB
    Not initialated (niet geinitialiseerd)
    Unassigned (niet toegewezen)

I didn't know what to do, so I tried some things. I pressed the right mouse button and he said "initialize disk". I pressed on it and he gave me 2 choices: MBR or GPT.
I tried both, but they both said: data error: Ketal redunatiecontrole.
So, I tried something different. I pressed the right button of my mouse again but this time on the black bar beside the disc information. He said "New simple volume", but I dared not go further because I didn't know if I would lose my data or not, if I would. Also, I didn't know how big the new volume should be.

He also said that the device works properly when I press 'characteristics '.

I don't know what to do now, and also I don't want my files to be deleted.

    Can someone help me?

(Sorry for my bad English, if I write it in Dutch because you do not understand my problem, please tell me ;)))

Can you please test it on another computer just to be sure, the same thing happens again?

  • Moving files from an external hard drive to my computer

I'm trying to move files from a disk external HARD connected to a router on my pc, and whenever I try to do the system show me a window with this message. IO error 0x8007045D error, I see a permission problem, then I configured for the 'Full' destination folder security access for everyone and nothing happened.

Drive external hard there network permissions to connect with the computer and move files through the router?  Have already transferred files with the disc external hard connected this before?  It would work a lot better if you just connect the external hard drive directly on your computer.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!
