My HD is almost full of 'other '.

I have an iMac 8.1 with 4 GB of RAM and 250 GB of HD. Just upgraded to El Capitan. I used to belong to my dear dad passed away over a period of 18 months ago. It has not been used much and didn't have much on this subject. Or so I thought.

There must be tons of space on the hard drive, but when I go to 'about this mac' I get this

I ran several utilities and they all get less than 20 GB of actual content. I emptied the trash, I ran disk Daisy (which does not match the image above) showing about 240 GB used. Most of what I tried to get out of drive Daisy told me it was necessary by OSX and let her exactly where she was. So I did. The image below shows the four roots records in HD. As you can see, they add up to less than 20 GB.

Same Omnidisk Sweeper reads (only 9 GB free which is in agreement with the report 'get info')

But when I actually run the program it is reported, only 16.7 GB of real comtent

So what is happening. I thought maybe it was the hidden partitions/folders, but it seems that they can not bee seen in El Capitan. Does anyone know what is all this (about 230 GB) other? And how do I get rid of him?

Beginning perhaps with OS 10.10 Yosemite - in any case, it has been some time - there was a bug known in the reports of the size of the 'other' on some new computers or those recently updated. The first thing to do is to re-indexing of the database of Spotlight. It's quick and easy - instructions here:

Then download and run Omni DiskSweeper. It can show you the exact size and location of all your files. It will be the inventory of your disc from files that occupy more space. Hi brandonfromdraper

You can turn off notifications here:

    • In the search box in Windows 10 type settings and select 'Windows App Store trust settings'
    • Click on "system".
    • Click on 'Notifications & Actions '.
    • Scroll down to 'Show Notifications of these apps'
    • Find "iCloud" and turn it off

This also works for other offending app notifications.

  • Can not find why the startup disk is almost full

I got the message "Boot disk almost full" and began to go through the folders. I did an EEG info on my user folder and it says 240gig, my drive is only 250 gig. But when I go through each subfolder that I can't find anything even close to that of grand. I deleted everything that I don't need but can't find where this huge amount of file space is used.

Simple answer - don't count on the Finder.

The Finder hides just pieces of the file system that are not relevant for most users.

When there is only a big gap between what the OS reports is used (240GB) and what you see in the Finder, is most often due to some errant logging process that fills the system logs, with mostly useless data.

You can view the logs (and other 'hidden' data) using the Finder go-> go to folder... menu and entering: / var

You can also use /Applications/Utilities/Console.app to view the logs to see if you can identify what process is at fault.

  • I get a message saying startup disk is almost full and to delete files. How can I go about it?

I have a macbook air and a message comes up saying that my boot drive is almost full and delete files to make more space. What files and where? Thank you.

Buy an external hard drive if you do not already have one and migrate personal files, things like documents, music, photos, videos, stuff like that.  Once they are on the external hard drive, delete them from your computer.  You would remove them the same way you would remove any other thing - click it, right-click, select "Move to trash."  Delete nothing however, until you have moved to an external drive.  If you don't save a copy somewhere, once you remove them, it's over and you can't get it back.

To understand what that other things that can be deleted are go up --> about this Mac--> storage.  This will tell you how many you have on your hard drive right now.  Post here a screenshot of it.

    Hello;

Let me welcome you on the HP forums!

The ONLY way to return to its original state of the recovery partition is to do a full erase of the hard drive and reconfiguration of the PC itself Žtat factory use HP Recovery Media - and, as said, that will delete EVERYTHING on the drive!

If you have backups of the image, as you requested, then you really don't need to partition and can safely remove to reclaim that space.

If Windows won't let you delete this partition, then try using this: Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition free

    Good luck

I get notification that the HP_TOOLS (drive E :) is almost full. When I go to check it out, I realize I have two backups here. I got my dad's computer. Backups say 'Rob - HP' and the other 'Alex-HP. The 'Rob - HP", a last change in 2012, and mine was in September. If I don't need my father, "Rob - HP", could I just delete it and keep mine? Hello:

It is normal that the partition recovery disk is almost full, and you should never store other files on it.

The partion made just large enough to hold recovery files.

If you have stored files on the recovery partition, I recommend that move you elsewhere.

  • My 'C' drive is almost full to bursting. Can I transfer some of the old windows after have updated them my drive "D"?

My computer shows that my 'C' drive is almost full and advised me to transfer some of the programs on. But going through the list, I discovered that most of the proms has in my 'C' drive are windows, most programs had been updated but with different codes. I want to transfer or delete, but I don't know which of them can be done safely without affecting my computer work?

    Concerning
    Philip Tan

    Hello PhilipTanams,

You will not be able to move the files to the C: drive on another drive Windows. All Windows files must be in the C: drive.

    Method 1:

If you have personal files or data, you can move these files to another drive that increases the size of the C: drive by adding
    Method 2:

If you have any other partition which has an empty space in it, you can extend the C: drive by adding the empty spaces to the C: drive.

See the links to find out how to extend the partition of drive.
