  When I boot my iMac, everything starts up fine in the beginning - he's going right on the desktop, the mouse moves around and, if I'm quick, I can even click on 1 maybe 2 things until the computer completely locks the spinning wheel of death color.  I can still move the wheel on the screen with no latency, but I can't do anything in fact.  Typing on the keyboard does nothing, although the caps lock key will light up.  Boot in safe mode produces exactly the same results, except that it asks me to log in first.

  Something must be start I need to get rid of, although I not much to install on this computer and rarely changes (it is a demo machine that lives in a small computer lab that I managed, off-grid). I never had any problems with it, then one day, this problem started.  Maybe I ran an update of the OS and that caused his crash?

  I am very familiar with troubleshooting a Windows computer, but Mac does not really offer many intuitive troubleshooting options, IMO.  This seems to be a fairly simple matter to reslolve, but my research online have not produced results - people seem to suggest the safe mode and command line solutions, but safe mode doesn't change anything and I can obviously not open a command line to type anything.

  The iMac was bought to 2010 and I'm 99% sure there Yosemite installed, but unfortunately I have no way to be able to check at the moment.

  Start of recovery volume (command - R on a restart, or hold down the option/Alt during a restart and select the Volume of recovery). Run the check/repair disk utility and repair permissions until you get no error. Then re-install the operating system.

• iMac, blocked by malware.  Help please!

  This morning I was using all my usual internet links (Facebook, hotmail and a hotel site), and suddenly a window popped up almost directly after my iMac froze & the window OS Support popped up immediately followed by another indefinable window saying my iMac was blocked and had been infected with malware and a virus.  I stop everything, including my internet connection.  I then rang the published phone number.

  Earlier, I restarted my Mac & internet - same thing happens again so I rang the number again and it turns out not to be Apple, quite probably the company that owns the malware trying to get US $150 to remove malicious software and viruses.  They said they were resting in the States.

  I'm not very good with the workings of the Apple - I actually have no idea what to do.  My AppleCare had expired and he is demanding $ 39 just to talk with the Apple Support!  I paid $99 for this AppleCare & have never used once before.

  It is probably just adware. It is becoming quite common.

  I wrote a small diagnostic program to help show what adware is installed. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etrecheck.com, run it and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, don't request your password to install and is signed with my developer Apple ID.

  If adware is installed, EtreCheck will help remove you, although you may need to provide a password. If you are not comfortable with that, just after the report of EtreCheck here and other AIDS can tell you exactly which files should be deleted and the way to do it.

• I turned on this morning with my imac and my password no longer works.  What is happening with this?

  The only change that I made using my imac was change my email address on different sites, such as Apple, but using a different computer.  I have no connection issues in my icloud & apple accounts, but the imac allows me to do more.

  2. turn the & at the same time hold down the 'command' & keys 'R '.

  3. next screen... In the menu bar, click on utilities (NOT OS X UTILITIES)

  4. in the drop down menu, click Terminal.

  5. in the small terminal window: Type-> resetpassword Hit return key.

  6 reset password window will appear.  Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the password.  Make sure you only select the administrator account to reset the password.

  My most recent iMac running 10.11.6 and yet I have a reminder of nagging update in the App Store to install Facetime 1.0.5 which is intended for 10.6.8 users (never had that OS on this iMac) and can not be installed on El Capitan. Looks like a few other people also have this problem and I found a few suggestions on the Apple Forums, that it is a problem of serial number and the machine must be brought to an Apple store or authorized service provider for a procedure... How can it be, the iMac was bought a few months again. Surely, there must be an easier way to make an appointment and dragging an iMac 27 "at the Mall, so they can read the label. Anyone has a better explanation as to what is happening here?

  I found the answer to this question very weird. It turns out that I had another App Facetime on a drive hard usb attached to my end 2015 27 "iMac. It is in a folder "applications", no idea where this came from, but as soon as I deleted it the App Store update for Facetime 1.0.5 message went away! Problem solved!
