My mac broken Migration Assistant! (Bluetooth, permissions etc.)

So a few days ago, I decided to use the Upsizing Wizard to make certain files and applications in front of my imac 2008 to my imac to 2014.  Running osx 10.11.4.  Part of the reason was to put all of my files in one place and consolidate my backups that I didn't have a recent backup of the unit in 2014.

Long story short, bluetooth doesn't work anymore so I can't connect my trackpad or mouse or keyboard and Office 2011 is no longer opens either.  I lost the permission to delete or edit a bunch of files too.

I tried most of the things I can find via google, such as deleting the bluetooth plist file.  However, the plist in my library/preferences folder files are all unlocked.  Nothing seems to unlock.  I can not add an admin via the permissions option.  I tried to disable SIP.  I also did a full reinstall of Mac OS x.  Nothing works.

I have 1 admin account and 1 guest.

Really get pretty annoyed now how the poor migration tool is and evil, it's done.  Apple support suggested the re-installation of Mac OS x, but that made no difference so have another call reserved (e).    I need to be able to use Office because I work from home!

Anyone have any ideas?

Please, back up all data before proceeding.

This procedure will unlock all your user (not system files) files and reset their ownership, permissions and default access controls. If you have voluntarily set special values for these attributes on any of your files, they will be be restored. In this case, either stop there, or be ready to recreate the settings if necessary. Do that after checking these settings that did not cause the problem. If none of that is meaningful to you, you need not worry about this, but do not follow the instructions below.

Step 1

If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to step 2.

Triple-click anywhere in the next line to this page to select this option:

sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nosappnd,noschg,nosunlnk,nouappnd,nouchg {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

Copy the selected text in the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination.

Launch the Terminal application integrated in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste in the Terminal window by pressing Command + V. I tried these instructions only with the Safari browser. If you use another browser, you may need to press the return key after pasting.

You will be asked your password of connection that are not displayed when you type. Type carefully, and then press return. You can get a warning to be careful. If you do not have a password, you will need to configure one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your user name "is not in the sudoers file", then you have not logged as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on the number of files you have. Wait for a new line ending with a dollar sign ($) to appear, and then quit Terminal.

Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with the phase 1, if you prefer not to consider, or if this does not resolve the problem.

Start in recovery mode. You may be prompted to select a language, then the OS X Utilities appears.

If you use FileVault 2, select disk utility, then select the icon for the volume FileVault startup ("Macintosh HD", unless you have given it a different name.) It will be nested under another icon of the disc. Select open in the file menu and enter your login password when you are prompted. Then quit disk utility must be returned to the main screen.

Select

Utilities ▹ Terminal

in the menu bar. It will open a Terminal window. In this window, type this:

resetp

Press the tab key. The partial order you entered will automatically end this:

resetpassword

Press return. Opens a window to reset the password. You do not need to reset a password.

Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD", unless you have given it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username in the menu option allows you to select the account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the reset button.

Select

▹ Restart 

in the menu bar.

  • You can use migration assistant to transfer the time machine backup external hard drive?

Hello. I just bought a new macbook pro with a 256 GB flash drive to replace my previous macbook pro that had a breakdown of all the systems. My problem is that I have a time machine backup that is greater than 256 GB (it's almost 450 GB) and I try to find out if I can use migration assistant to transfer all the content directly on an external hard drive, then move the content I want on my hard drive from the external hard drive? My goal is to let my music and photos on the external hard drive and for all port hardware I need for work.

I don't have access to another mac with storage well enough that I have the old HD so could potentially be installed in an external enclosure and extracted files directly from there if it's easier.

What I intend to do in the long term is to buy a big external hard drive network and put all my photos, music etc over there and use the laptop as expected - that is for files from day to day - then it will be just a short-term problem.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

    Thank you

    Nick

Migration Assistant is user to transfer data from one computer to the other.  If I read your post correctly, you want to copy your data from Time Machine on another HARD disk.  Thia may be useful:

Pondini website covers virtually all aspects of Time Machine.

  • Migration assistant to migrate an old iMac 2006

A friend with an old 2006 Intel iMac which was under Snow Leopard is replaced by a current model of retina of 27 inches. Can I use SuperDuper clone to migrate its data/applications/settings etc. the old iMac 17 inch to the new 27 inch one? I don't remember if the former must be at least Lion to work with the Migration Wizard, or it can be under Snow Leopard?

To complicate matters even more, yesterday I upgraded her iMac to Lion, so she could buy a recent brother model all in one scanner/printer/copier, which requires the minimum Lion. The upgrade worked but the iMac has slowed to a crawl, and it is not possible to work on it in this State (it is maxed out at 3 GB of RAM). She was going to buy a new Mac in a few months, but it seems more practical to buy now, where my question on enter its data into the new iMac El Cap when it arrives. Before you erase his hd and reinstall Snow Leopard of the clone, I thought it might be useful to make a backup of the current installation of Lion, thinking it's maybe easier to use with the Migration Wizard. But I want to check with the experts here on the forum before you do anything.

Depends on the version of OS X installed on the backup of the SD. Migration Assistant works with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later version. However, instead of using MY, she should use Setup Wizard which is practically the same thing that MY except that it does not create a new user account. Connect the SD card to the new machine when it arrives, when it is on SA launches and finally request if you are migrating from another Mac, select Yes and follow the prompts on the screen. Apple explains to move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support.

BTW, you are way more thinking about this, a migration is a very simple process.

    Hello

What service Pack is installed on the computer?

Windows migration brings the following information about your Windows PC (Windows XP SP3 or higher) on your Mac:
Note: You must have at least Windows XP with Service pack 3 for Windows Migration Wizard.
Method 1: Temporarily disable the antivirus software and check if that helps.

Important note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

  • Migration assistant did not what I expected

I set up my iMac 5K and installed Photoshop and Office of the COR.  I used Migration Assistant, thinking it would be the best way to transfer my iTunes from my old Mac Mini Library. Now, I have two accounts on my new iMac, HLP from my old Mac Mini and HP the new account, I just put in place.  How can I: 1) move my iTunes library of HLP HP and 2) Get rid of the HLP account that I don't want on my 5 K?

    This article can help you

    https://www.macissues.com/2014/05/21/how-to-combine-two-accounts-in-OS-x/

You not use Migration Wizard and Setup Assistant, you would not create a second user account. However, it's water under the bridge. Next time, consider using the configuration wizard and migrate then and not an afterthought.

  • Using Migration Assistant with no display

I got my MacBook mid-2010 (2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, OS X El Capitan) for 2 years.

It splits into two somewhere within 2 years.

The MacBook was still usable, but it had to be on a desk. The screen was completely separate from the base. It still worked.

I woke up a few days ago to find that someone had cut the display cable holding the MacBook set and turn on the screen.

I bought an early-2011 13 "MacBook Pro to replace the dead MacBook. (Yes, I buy old Mac because the news is so expensive).

Old Mac has been saved semi regularly, so I have an old backup to use for the new Mac. The problem is that just before the death of the former Mac, I downloaded a bunch of stuff that has not been saved. I really want the files that have not been backed up on my new MBP.

Can I use Migration Wizard with an Ethernet cable and transfer of data from one, or Migration Assistant must be running on old Mac as well?

I tried to connect (I'm sure that the computer is still running, it doesn't simply have a display) on the old Mac, plug the backup drive and I hope to do a backup hourly, but Time Machine did not only.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you use Ethernet or a wireless network to transfer data, Yes. If you can not download the files and file-sharing has not been activated on the old Mac, you must either get fixed display or put its internal drive in a closed Chamber.

  • Migration assistant will consolidate iPhoto and photo libraries

I just bought an iMac "towards the end of 2015" to replace my iMac 2011. I'm a Mac (MacBook Pro and iMac) user since 2005 and I am aware of the installation of the Migration Wizard when you first install a new Mac. However, for some reason, I have an iphotos library and a library of photos. Can anyone tell if migration assistant will consolidate in a single library or I have to do (manually?) before migration?

Two follow-up questions (if you're still reading this...)

iMovie is now only opens on my iMac 2011 (part of the reason why I bought a new iMac). There are projects that must still be finalized that it contains. Speculation as to whether the data migration is likely to result in my getting access to these existing projects? Worst case scenario would be that everything that is corrupt iMovie on my current iMac is transferred to the new machine. My guess is that what stop imovie to open 2011 on the iMac is not related to the data that make up the project, so that when I migrate to the new machine, I go back to my projects. Can anyone confirm this?

Last question (base); What are the recommendations for what should be my time machine drive? I currently have 1 Tb internal, more an external of 2 to 3 TB of disk. With the new machine equipped with connectivity Thunderbolt that I will be in the market for a new external hard drive. because the new machine has 2 TB drive internal pot and am looking to get a disc hard thunderbolt of 3 - 4Tb, should I still 5-6 to time machine as backup (assuming I get nearby using all available space my on my internal and external drive)?

    Much appreciated for your advice.

    No, it won't merge.

Using both programs such as libraries have different content that needs merging? When Photos import iPhoto library, it creates hard links to files, not copy, so they do not all the disk space.

    I can't respond to the #2.

Your our backup drive should be two to three times the amount of data to back up.

  • Migration Assistant tips - model 2009 to 2016 New

I would like to use the Migration Wizard to move date of old new iMac, but was one could move "crud".  Any advice?

Old machine is 2009 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.8.5.  It may be shocking slow (more than a minute to answer a click sometimes).  Concern that the hard drive may be out.  I used Migration Assistant to least an older eMac it before and quite possible an original iMac before that.  So there are many old things lurking there in.

I've already implemented the new machine slot a new name (some say bad idea).  However, new machine has been used for web and e-mail Web since he was pulled up.  So maybe I can go and rename?

I don't have a ton of time to move much more than the docs if I don't use MY that I don't have time to learn all the intricacies of what lies where.

Great dangers if I use MY or just hover over the docs and start over?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You must use the Migration Wizard the first time you start your new Mac, after that it will create another user admin and that can cause you problems. Wipe the drive and start again are the simplest solution. Most of the "crud" is small files that not harm. To determine if one of your crud is harmful, please download and run EtreCheck. It is a diagnostic tool that is very useful for us to find problems. It will also give us additional specifications on your Mac. After his execution after the logfile here. It will never contain any personal information.

  • migration assistant for only the user folder

I'm helping a student who left a Time Machine backup College but suffered a hard disk failure in his MacBook Pro here. We can't clone or make a backup hard drive TM or run the recovery partition. All we could do was to copy the user on an external hard drive folder.

Apple replace the drive under warranty and installation of system software. When we reboot the machine that is repaired, we will be able to use setup assistant/migration assistant to transfer the folder to the user as it will not be recognized as another backup Mac or MC? Otherwise, what is the best way to get it on the laptop and recognized as a user it?

(She needs to work on its data before returning to the University is not an option to wait until she is back with his backup TM)

As far as I know the Migration can be done with just the folder of the user. What I would say is that you copy the text of the drive backed up by a folder. In other words, open the two folders of Documents and copy the text from the backup folder of Documents to the Documents from the computer folder. This, for everything except the library. Most of what is in the library will be restored as the computer is reconfigured and the applications are put back in place.

  • Cancel transfer migration assistant

I used migration assistant and time machine for all transfer from my old mac to my new mac. I really wish that I had not transferred applications.  Is it possible to get it back to how it was sent to me?

    Thank you very much!

Using OS X Recovery can help return the computer to its original state; It will download

the delivered software as set if it is still available from the Apple servers, or other on App Store.

OS X: on OS X Recovery - Apple Support

You should also consider an external drive to backup component that is not Time Machine

Associates and is separated physically. This could be used to create & maintain a clone of the Mac OS x

and applications on the computer, all in offline mode. You can completely restore a clone updated.

Or use them as your own time capsule. Some partitions can be destroyed if you use disk utility

to erase a hard drive completely; If so will not be the recovery hard disk partition. When

replace a hard drive with a new one, also we need format & go to the

recovery of the Internet for installation; unless you have a complete quality clone that managed

to copy all partitions in the original, for later use in an archive personal offline.

    https://www.Apple.com/retail/Geniusbar/

If you have terribly slow internet (using Ethernet instead of a wi - fi connection) you might also consider a visit

in an official Apple store with the Genius bar, appointment; to get help to restore original.

    Good luck & happy computing!
