  Try a test message with Norton shuts down completely. If it works, remove Norton and do a custom Setup, opting out e-mail Scanner when it is offered. Sometimes just turn off is not enough.

  As to why, I have really no idea - touch wood - it never happened to me, but cause a lot of problems for others.  Somehow or other, the cache file is corrupted and this is the solution.
