  If you have the European model for laptop, you will not be able to get the restore disc in the Canada.
  In my opinion the easiest solution for you is to get Microsoft WXP installation disc and install the operating system on your own. Windows XP Home edition is more so expensive.

  Buy Windows XP edition family (SP2) installation disk, install it and then download and install all the necessary drivers and all the other stuff of Toshiba.   Yes, the upgrade of the HARD drive is not difficult.
  In most cases, you will need to remove the HDD from the laptop's HARD drive Bay, then switch the HARD drive bracket to the new HARD drive, then insert the new HARD disc again in Notepad.

  As a bit of a novice I need some advice from people more experienced than me!

  Well. Everyone knows that a HARD disk problem can happen and all of a sudden you may lose all the data stored on the HARD drive.
  That is why it s always recommended to backup the data on additional HDD, DVD, etc.

  I'm not sure if this will help but try this:
  Try to boot from the disk Win XP (NOT the Toshiba Recovery disk) and press r. means repair and should start the repair console.
  The similar DOS window should open and there, you can use a command:
  CHKDSK drive/p/r

  The chkdsk command checks the specified drive and repairs or recovers the drive if the drive requires it.

  If that does not help, then you need to reinstall new OS.

  DVD and CD playback is jerky and slow (sound and image). This problem occurred out of the blue! One day was playing very well and the next, when we tried to play a DVD is a different problem.
