• Need help planning first VM: data migration store

  Here is where I am: I just install ESX 3i on the 3 hosts, and I want to install a VM on vCenter.  I want this virtual machine in a HA cluster.  Problem is that I don't have my SAN connected yet due to a missing part is shipped at this time.  However, lack of time, I want to crack on the first VM so that I'm not just sitting idle to wait for the parts to arrive.

  It is possible (and relatively simple) simply to create a virtual machine on the local storage for now and then migrate the data to the San store as soon as I get that later installed?  How could I get this?  Did I do against the "rules" so to speak?

  When you turn off your virtual computer and right click on your virtual machine (via Client (VI) one of the options is to migrate, once you select Migrate Wizard opens and the steps are:

  1. Select the destination (this can be an another ESX or the same ESX)

  2. Select the resource pool (once again this can be the same)

  3. Select the data store, here you have to choose the option move the configuration of virtual machines and virtual disks files and select your San

  4 review your selection and click on finish

  You will see the progress made in the recent in your VI client task bar, once the task is completed you can resume your VM

  I have the server list in csv as VM1, VM2 40... VM40. Need to findout that those VMS resides on the host to which ESXi, data store and Cluster name using the import function. Any help on this truly appreciated.

  If you change the last line of the script in:

  then, you save the output in a .csv file called VMsReport.csv.

• Resizing data store - ESXI 5.5.0

  Hi all

  Bit of a problem here - I am trying to add a disk to a single host, HP DL380p Gen 8 Server ESXI 5.5.0 (update of HP Image 2) with a controller P420i (6 600 GB discs in RAID6)

  I added the disk in the array existing ok so there is now 7 600 Go discs - ESXI sees capacity update under the storage view (previous capacity was 2 TB)

  

  However under the view of storage of the data store

  

  In the properties of the data store, I can see the ability increases however I can not increase the actual data store

  

  

  Am I missing something?

  Unfortunately you will not like my answer but can still

  If you look at your second screenshot, you will notice that there is another partition on this 'device' - a 4 GB FAT32 partition. This will be served when you created the data store VMFS5 on this unit you would have been asked a question to see if "free use of space" or "use all available partitions. It would be I think the choice was 'space free use '. What this meant was that the existing partition format would have been kept was that due to the FAT32 partition MBR.

  When the VMFS5 data store was created he could not convert the format of partition a GPT device that allows for the storage of data greater than 2 TB in size and is the reason why you can't currently develop it use the extra space.

  Solution: Move all the virtual machines in this data store, and then delete the data store and recreate ensuring "Use all available partitions" option is selected. Once completed, migrate virtual back machines.

  NOTE: This step is destructive, so make sure you have all the virtual machines on the data store, and anything else is stored before proceeding. This includes VMs that have been deleted inventory or ISOs stored.

• NETGEAR Stora as data store ESXi 4.0?

  Hello

  I was wondering if anyone has had any success using the Stora as a data store for ESXi.  I tried openfiler unsuccessfully for 2 weeks and went got a Stora without doing research.  Thought that it would be good to go because it was attached to the network.  I had and saw that it is 'not very' what I expected.  Can someone give a newbie ESXi a hand up?

  Just for a test, if you are ready to try linux, you can go without affecting one installed the other os, like this:

  • Download Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop

  • Burn it to a CD

  • Boot the CD in the desktop (use the option "Try Ubuntu 10.04 LTS" instead of "install...) »)

  • Attach the external drive, it will be displayed as an icon on the desktop

  • Use package manager to download and install (it works as a facility, even if it does not write permanently) nfs-server (by using the shell, that would be like "sudo apt - get install nfs-server)

  • The nfs-server package will be downloaded, installed and started

  • Using the shell, you issue "mount" to see where the USB drive has been mounted (something like/media/LabelOfTheDisk)

  • question "ifconfig eth0" to see the IP address of your Ubuntu (must be using DHCP).

  • Reuse the shell, you must edit the file/etc/exports (like "sudo nano/etc/exports)

  • Add the following "/ media/LabelOfTheDisk IPAddressOfESXi (rw, no_root_squash, sync, no_subtree_check).

  • CTRL + X ends nano, use 'Y' to save

  • issue of 'sudo /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server reload"to load the modified/etc/exports

  • Now you should be able to use the nfs in your ESXi Server (add datastore, NFS, Server = "IP of Ubuntu", folder = ' / media/LabelOfTheDisk ")

  Going like that, you should be able to test your configuration. This is a test, the performance will be at least the mounted disk is most often empty. The disc may be NTFS or vFAT which are not best for linux.

• I need to delete files from data store. Get the message "could not open because it was in use" How can I work around?

  9 my Windows update does not work. It is said to open "Datastore" and del; files allow you updates. When I try to open the data store in a first time, I wonder what program to use, and then said "can not open because it is used by another program."  This Windows Vista bit. I can't install Explorer 9 until I have a workaround. Help.

  I suggest to reset the Windows update components and then try to check updates, and then install the updates and check if it helps.

• Copy the ISO data store ESXi on VM

  Hello

  I'm quite new to virtualization and unable to understand the ways to copy the ISO file that is located on the data to a virtual computer store. Basically, I already installed ESXi and couple of Windows 2008 VM. Consider using one of this virtual machine as a server vCenter. Now, I have already downloaded from the VMware website and downloaded vCenter ISO to one of the data store.

  However, unable to work how can I copy the ISO to this virtual machine file so that I can install vCenter server? I have read a few things on the internet and tried to use WinSCP within the virtual machine using the IP host address, but I get "no connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.» the connection has failed. It is similarly after I activated the client FTP on ESXi host in the firewall. I am able to SSH (putty) to ESXi host with no problems.

  How can I get this to work? Y at - it a simple method that might work? Is WinSCP way to go? If so, why it wouldn't work? Note it is lab home environment and there is no other firewalls between the two.

• I need help with my first VMs Server ESXi

  I just installed ESXi and created a virtual machine, but I can't get an OS on this virtual machine.  I can't reach the data store to load the files here and I can't get the virtual machine to read a DVD to an iso file on my hard drive of the vSphere client or the host.  I have read the getting started guide, but I see nothing there that mentions the installation of the operating system.

  I have five questions:

  1. How do I put the files .iso on the host data store so that they are available to anyone using this host?

  2. how to install an operating system once I created the machine on the host?

  3 can we clone VM on the host as they can on my computer

  4. How can I make a WS 6.5 capatible VMS on that host ESXi 4.0 U1?

  5. can I just convert my 6.5 VMs to run in that ESXi 4.0 host?

  to create the directory to put the ISO just go to the configuration tab-> data store-> right click on the data store-> select Browse datastore. Then you can directly manage data store files, and for example to create the directory for the iso holding.

  In order to upload files to the directory you just created above, you can use the fastscp tool o maybe winscp.

  If you want to use winscp you must enable the remote ssh access on the esxi.

• Recommended minimum on the data store when free disk space you use connection vRanger 5

  I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the recommendation is on the left of free space on a data store. I use 5 vRanger connection to back up my VM to another physical server. As such, I will not take snapshots 'manual '. I'm not sure if vRanger connection, running on a separate server, creates additional files on the data store.

  I've read a few threads on this site and some are advocating to let free, 20 to 25%, while that of others, offer 10% left free may be sufficient. Is there an official number for this or if anyone can share valuable experince?

  I generally recommend to have about 20% of free space on each data store. However, this depends on the activity/writes to disk during backup. vRanger connection - as well as any other backup software - create a snapshot, back up the virtual machine and then remove / commit the snapshot again. This is necessary in order to access the virtual disk files. Usually the backups are made during hours, so snapshots should not grow too much. However, you must also take into account the fact that in the case of a mistake - if the snapshot cannot be deleted - it will grow until it is deleted manually.

  I tried 19GB, 18 GB, and even 10GB... the same error. As you can see there is 19.46 GB of free space on the data store.

  chances are you have snapshots or Exchange memory files using this space.

  Best practices of VMware is to leave 25 + % free on your VMFS volumes.

  I weoud suggest you use another if possible VMFS volume

  From orders, it seems that your colleague has checked if the LUNS were visible as of the snapshot LUNS and then mounted their strength to the host (see, for example, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011387) Once mounted he checked if data warehouses are available (write access) simply by creating and deleting the file.

  In any case, if the ID LUN LUN in the same environment of vCenter Server do not match you may run into questions at a later time. Then please ensure the LUN ID match!
