Nervous about upgrading to El Capitan

Hello

I am currently using OS X 10.8.5 on a Mid 2012 Mac Book Pro.  I have a 500 GB HD and 432 GB available.  My processor is an Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz and I have DDR3 4 GB 1600 MHz memory.

My question is my browser (Safari 6.2.8) is updated as much as possible with the Mountain Lion and my credit card company wants an updated set browser to access their site, and I don't know there will be others to follow soon as well as social security, Healthcare.gov, etc.  Also I was see the rotation occasionally surfing autour beach ball.  I can't use Google chrome, either as the OS is too old for that as well.  If unfortunately an upgrade is probably in order.  I've never backed up my computer, I know my pain, but to tell you the truth, it seems really complicated and unreliable.  I copied my spreadsheets, music and photos on the big flash drives. I'm NOT super trendy clientele and mostly use my computer to surf the web, pay your bills online and photos and music.

I have read several threads here about backing up your computer and even of level 1 users they all seem like they know their way around a hard drive, but most seems to be Greek.  Archive or back up or cloning?  really! I read glowing reports for EC balanced with an equal percent of horror stories.  There are still enemies with each new version, but he always puts fear in me.   So here's my concerns and I hope that someone will be willing to help me with questions.  I apologize beforehand for the length, just trying to give as much information as possible.  I hope this is the right forum for this.

1. once I figured out hard drive external not really "drives" I checked a few Mac ready those off to use with TM, WD and Seagate are most available.  I really useless a backup by the hour of my computer because I do not change that much every day and it seems that you have to leave this plugged in 24/7, which seems to be a pain for a laptop, making it not so portable. In addition, I read to turn off the computer to remove the external hard drive safely.  really? Just do a manual backup to once per week or per month?

2 would it not be better for me to use a cloning software, so that I can just do a (bootable?) copy of my current operating system and files instead of the hour by hour back ups with time machine?  I don't know if I'm wise enough to understand all this.  I've been to the site Web of Super Duper and they seem useful, but that's another $ 30 on top of $60 for a 1 TB hard drive.

3. I've read that you should have 2 copies of your back upward.  This means that the right of the external hard drive 2?

4. do you need Internet to do back ups?  I use my iPhone as a hotspot, but go to my children if I need more long-term WiFi although their isn't super fast like his outing in the glue.

5. I don't have a ton of applications other than those that the computer came with, but those I have I really want to lose.  Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, Family Tree Maker for Mac v. 2 being the main.  Also my printer is old so I might have to replace it. I checked their compatibility from a link on this forum.  It seems that two of them will not work.  I don't know how to check if my printer model will work with CBS. Simple workaround?  I hate to lose everything if I update.  For some applications you is impossible to pass up to that you upgrade your operating system, but does that mean that I will lose all the old files?

6. can you have 1 computer but have 2 OS?  El Capitan when I need to do web stuff and mountain lion to use my other applications?  Probably not easy. Or do I have to take out a loan and buy another computer and keep my old for my obsolete applications?

7. If I have to do this (upgrade) to EC what should be my game plan be?  Everything to make the transition smoother?  In simple terms for a dummy?

Anyway, if someone wants to help, I admire!

If you don't want to upgrade your version of OS X, the version of OS X Lion mountain Safari from Apple is more a web browser secure OS X Lion of the mountains of 10.8 and you should stop using this version of Safari.

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion receives more updates of security and, in my view, little time goes more to receive new updates of iTunes, either.

Same problem with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, which ended support for OS X 10.6 - 10, 8.

Mozilla Firefox has just ended its support of web browser and its last full version, this emitted (ver. 48.0.0), last August for OS X 10.6 - 10, 8 can still be used for some time more.

OR

Mozilla continues support of security (of newest web browser feature support) for the web browser Firefox through their program of Firefox ESR, (that you CAN download, install and use) that will continue only security support for Firefox until next April 2017 for OS X 10.6 - 10, 8.

You can use these versions of the ESR. Ignore the notes support educational/business.

I am running Lion and thinking about upgrading to El Capitan.  However, I have some graphics programs (which I need for work) and I fear that they can not working correctly after I upgraded (what happened in the past).  And I don't have the money to upgrade all software.

What is the best way to make them after I've upgraded, can I return to Lion if I need to (if my programs no longer work)?  A bit nervous about switching where I can't go back.  Or am I just worrying about nothing?

Use a program such as disk utility or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone Lion on an external drive or install El Capitan on this disc.

    Hello mrtrytofixit,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community Support from Apple. I know how it is important to be able to rely on public services provides your Mac and I want to help you get things working again. With troubleshooting, you have already done, it seems that it is a systemic problem.

From there, what I recommend is reinstall OS X El Capitan using OS X Recovery on your Mac. It should not remove or erasure of your data, but it is recommended that you make backup before you do incase of an emergency.

Time machine is unable to perform a backup. Not able to access the sparsebundle. First of all, there is problem with the Snow Leopard operating system. Dragon followed in the upgrade to El Capitan. Only difference was error code 109 changed to 'null '. What about someone?

    We need some info.

You can access from the finder Time Capsule? If this isn't the case, then Time Machine will not work.

You upgrade the computer snow to El Capo and keep the same name?

If you want to backup, it is best to start again... clean the new backup any attempt to add a previous backup failed.

I recommend that you actually erase the TC... do a complete factory reset and start again.

The previous backup if necessary can be archived on a USB drive connected to the TC assuming that Airport utility can still access it. Airport utility accesses the TC?

With update installs all sorts of things can go wrong... so tell me more if you can not get anywhere.

I have macbook pro late 2009. I started to upgrade to El Capitan 2 days ago. Downloaded, it stalled during installation. It has frozen about 95% installation and remained so for 2 days. Help, please.

    Try to Safe Mode Setup:

    https://support.Apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Start safe mode and see if the problem persists:

    Restart now ' shift '.

(Wait to take more time to start in this way because it runs a check of directory first. Also give it some time after the start because he runs maintenance routines at the beginning.)

  • Import old box Inbox and sent in the Mail after upgrading to El Capitan

There has been much discussion about the e-mails lost after upgrade to El Capitan, but I have not seen this particular question.

I discovered that, like many others, all emails in my Inbox and in my sent folder to leave before the upgrade had disappeared. The issue has not affected the emails I had moved to folders.

Open the mail library file (in the Finder, hold down the Option key selecting go to the top menu and the library appears), I discovered that Mail was created a new file V2, account, while the old one, V3 (created in 2013), sitting next to her. Go by the size files, it seems fair to assume that the V3 still contains my "lost" emails

So, I don't know if the bug is that a new V2 should have been created at all, or is it a sync error, or something else. What I know is that when I try to import the items from Inbox and sent from the V3, I get an error message telling me that no mbox valid was found. This is patently false.

I also tried to copy on an external hard drive, gave them a different name, but even then I couldn't import them. Reconstruction did not help either.

Anyone able to help? I have a few crucial e-mails out there, and I try to avoid the upgrade...

Address postal (El Capitan): import or export the mailboxes

  • Is it safe to upgrade to El Capitan

I have a computer with current books with Yosemite. I read about the problems with El Capitan. Should I upgrade or will I find my files do not work?

    Hello

As long as you have a Time Machine backup or another backup system enabled you do not risk anything by upgrade to El Capitan. As long as the installation process goes well, you will always be able to access your books. If you use more specific written apps, you can ensure that they are compatible with El Capitan to https://roaringapps.com rest

    Happy update

  • Upgrade to El Capitan has replaced the boot on Configuration partition dual boot

I've been using find for a dual-boot my Macbook Pro with OSX and Ubuntu.  Today, I decided to upgrade my OSX Yosemite to El Capitan.

After downloading all the 6G, which took about six hours, and the installation program, I received a prompt to restart my computer.  After that, and waiting more than 10 minutes staring at a blank screen, I pressed the power button, but nothing happened.  After doing this several times and get in trouble in the meantime, I pressed and held.  To my surprise the blank screen is having a background slightly shine completely black color.  Then, I realized that the computer was actually still on, and I interrupted probably something I shouldn't.

Then I turned on my computer, and instead of being presented to the screen where I choose which operating system to load, I got OSX loading screen with the Apple logo and progress bar.  After some time, the OSX installer appeared and told me that it would take 19 minutes to install OSX.  However, after a minute and a half, the installer left with the message:

OS X could not be installed on your computer

A partition of start-up assistance is required when working with the storage of carrots.

Exit Setup to restart your computer and try again.

Product restarts the same result, as described above.

Using the disk utility program, I see that I still have my Ubuntu partition, although not like OS X doesn't shows being available and has no information about it other than its size.

As a customer, I am pretty upset by this situation.

Why don't/that the installer should overwrite the MBR?  It's totally useless!  Why the installation program could not upgrade the OS that he treated and leave the rest alone computer?  If someone at Apple has not considered the possibility that some of their users will want to double to start their systems?

Why are there not warnings or other information displayed during the preparation phase indicating that this would happen?  Why me staring at a screen empty while something, probably important, took place in the background and leading me to believe that my computer had hung up?  Surely a window could have been displayed saying something like "do not turn off your computer.

Now that I have my setup porked, I need to recover from an old backup, get kind of rEFInd running again, back up my Ubuntu installation and probably delete the partition.  Then try to upgrade to El Capitan again after the download of an another 6G.  Once El Capitan is at work, I'll have to recreate the EXT4 partition and restore Ubuntu top and install rEFInd.  This seems to be an arrangement rather STUPID having to cross in 2016.

Has anyone else had this problem?  If so, advice on how to get all this done effectively?

New user account is not happy!

Well, it seems that the recovery of my Time Machine backup is not so simple...

In the setup of OS X, utilities disk is available, so I ran it.

I've selected the partition where OS X is installed and choose the editing command-> restore from the menu, and then set the "restore from:' location to my partition backup (located on an external USB drive) and press ."

This produces a message saying "restore process has failed. Press OK to continue.  (Continue where?)

Open the details view showed me:

    Validation of source...

    Apple Media (DIS3) disk image

System basis of OS x (disk3s1)

    Apple Media disk image (2)

    OS X install ESD (disk2s2)

What volumes cannot be disassembled?  Apple media disk image?  Why?  What these volumes As make me writing disk4s2 to disk1?

I'll try to disassemble the Terminal and see if disk utility can help you.

  • Safari freezes several times after upgrade of El Capitan

    Hello world

I've upgraded to El Capitan this afternoon on my MacBook Pro (late 2011 version) and since then have been essentially unable to use Safari as it freezes several times, forcing me to force to leave every time. I noticed that others on the Board had listed their etrecheck results, so mine are below.

It has been quite frustrating - Safari was my go - to browser and seems today almost no functional for me. (Firefox works fine, no problem, then what is it with Safari?)

  • Afraid to upgrade to El Capitan

When I upgraded from the Mavericks in Yosemite, some of my software did not work right.  The 2 that I am concerned about are Quicken and Family Tree Maker.  I had to pay to upgrade to ensure compatibility with Yosemite.  Now, you have El Capitan.  I can't afford to upgrade again.  In fact I have the latest version of Family Tree Maker, so if I go to El Capitan, there's nothing I can do the upgrade of the Family Tree Maker.  I'm just a normal housewife everyday ordinary user.  I don't use a lot of the ability of Mac.  It is worth the upgrade to El Capitan for me.

    NO.
