Network management - only the virtual switch

I installed latest ESXi 4 Update 1, which is available. I m running Active Directory LAB on several virtual servers Windows 2008 R2 and one of them acts as a router with RRAS role. I m creating 3 different subnets and one of them must be only virtual - no material connection NIC in the interface of ESXi´s it seems that I can't do this, while creating the new switch virtual it forces me to select NIC it becomes a problem, because if I use a virtual switch for Windows 2008 router has the physical NETWORK map It will come to mean that the cable is disconnected. And I need a virtual connection between virtual servers only, that they will be the single subnet between them and communication to physical clients will go through this router´s of Windows 2008 NIC that is not supposed to be physical.

How can I archive with ESXi?

You can create a vSwitch without attached Teddy.

Do not select any NIC, or delete them after the creation of the vSwitch.

OK, here's my question, I know how to give themselves a phyiscal nic to a vmware, but I wanted to take it one step further and do not leave the host send or receive data from this network card, only the virtual machine can use this network/NIC...

Here's my reasoning, I have to network conections, one is for my internal/field network and the second is a direct connection to the internet (Comcast) I don't want to use to separate the machines have for internet connection, I want to be on the same machine phyiscal and have just the vmware machine talking to comcast... is it possible?  I am running VMware workstation 7, last update.

I assume you are using a Windows host?

    If Yes...

-first set up networking networking with vmnetcfg.exe

-assign vmnet0 to the network card for the internal network

-assign vmnet2 to the network card used for direct access to the internet

-Right-click on the map network-icon in the systray and access the properties of the network adapter for vmnet2

-Disable all other protocols and the Protocol of vmware_bridge for this network adapter

result: a virtual machine that uses vmnet2 can directly access the internet and the host has no IP address for this network adapter - and therefore cannot use it.

  • DNS will work within a private network that includes only a virtual switch?

I have a private network defined in free ESXi 5.5 using only one virtual switch.

Virtual machines on this virtual switch can ssh them using their IP addresses.

I have configured the DNS on one of the virtual machines in this private network, but it will not

    resolve hostnames to IP addresses.

Simple question, DNS can run on a private network that is composed

    only a switch virtual ESXi?

Yes it will work, but you first need to register all the names of virtual machines and the IP address on the DNS server and point the entry of DNS server on the virtual machines to IP address of the DNS server that you deployed.

  • a restart of the network management will affect virtual on an IBM Blade?

    Hi all

We are running an IBM Blade S with two blades HS22 located on ESX 4

I would like to add a HS23 on ESXi 5 and then upgrade all three blades to the latest version of ESXi 5.

I entered in the console HS23 and put up the name / networking details. When I go out, I get a message saying that the management network will be restarted.

This restart will affect the virtual running on our existing blades? I have to arrest all of them first? If so it's a little bit of pain

    Thank you

    Tracy

Network management only affects this network hosts to talk to other guests or to connect, but should not affect all guests of this host or any other host.

  • How to leave the virtual switch as a physical switch law in esxi 5?

    Hello.

I have Esxi5 installed on a server with 3 physical network card (they are supported and found in Esxi) on that Esxi I installed a virtual-SIN (NexentaStor) machine. The first network adapter is connected to the router, the second network adapter is connected to a PC. DHCP is enabled on the router. Normally on a real switch all connected pc should automatically get an IP address from the server (router), or must be able to communicate when they have a fixed IP address. This does not work on the virtual switch. One of my virtual pc Gets an IP address in a range of false, and I can't connect a real PC at this switch

    2 questions:

    1. Should what settings I use in esxi5 to get virtual pc the good IP address?
    2. Is it possible to connect a real pc directly to the second NIC in my esxi server and use the virtual switch as a true switch? In this way, I can use the Gigabit Nic for a fast and direct connection to the virtual NAS and can connect to the internet via the switch?

  • Sending requests to network IN on the virtual computer invited

I just started a trial of VMWare Workstation and while my guest computer has obtained an IP address from my DHCP server and obtained all necessary to access the universe via the LAN (I can Google etc), I can not connect this computer invited. If I ping its IP address, it ignores the ping. If I ping the host machine, it responds to the ping command.

It is very imprtant to work I want to do that I could issue request for applications inside the guest VM for example the servers Web, SQL Server etc..

I would be grateful for any help anone can provide.

    Thank you

    Dave

    Welcome to the community,

Since you say "has obtained an IP address from my DHCP server" I guess you setup a network bridged for the virtual machine. In this case, I would start to take a look at the firewall on the client to see if the ICMP traffic is blocked (the default for new Windows systems).

  • Network problem in the virtual machines on the same switch

    Hello

I'm stuck on a problem with my small network.  I have an ESXi 5 host that hosts around 10 virtual machines.  The last two machines I install recently displayed an unexpected behavior.  I can't do a ping between the two machines or in those 2 VMS to anywhere else in the same subnet or other networks.  These two VMS, I am able to ping and have network connectivity.  Two of these virtual machines reside on the same vSwitch and belong to the same group of port as other machines.

The configuration of these two VMs appears to be identical to all other virtual machines that work properly.  The two guest virtual machines running Windows Server 2008 R2.

So far, I tried several static IP and DHCP assignments with the same effect.  (Including spend another virtual machine a static IP at work known to one of the computers virtual problem)  I tried to delete and re-create one of the virtual machines completely.  I also did an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 for vCenter, ESXi host and virtual machines, and I am always observing the same behavior.

Any advice on what to check next would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    Greg

  • No network connection between the virtual machines on different hosts ESXi

I have several 5.0 ESXi hosts in a cluster managed by vCenter Server 5 and I have network problems:

    1. [Host A] running a virtual machine can ping any other computer virtual running on the [host A] great!
    2. A virtual machine running on host [B] can ping any other virtual machine running on [B] home - very well!
    3. [host A] (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running on [B] home - even better!
    4. [B] home (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running [host A] - beautiful set!
    5. A virtual machine running [host A] can not ping any virtual computer running on host [B] and vice versa - bad, very bad!

So basically the problem is that the virtual machines can communicate on hosts. It is a major problem that I need to fix, for obvious reasons.

Networking on all hosts is configured exactly the same way: a unique and standard vSwitch with a pair of gigabit network cards grouped, vmkernels configured for the vMotion, NFS and network management and a group of ports configured for the VIRTUAL local area network used by the VMs. (vMotion works fine on hosts, storage vMotion works very well too.) All virtual machines are servers Windows (2003 and 2008).

Reason #3 and #4 above, my assumption is that #5 must be the result of an ESXi/vCenter configuration issue and not a problem with the switches of material upstream. Is this a reasonable assumption?

Whatever it is, can anyone offer suggestions on how can I fix? It is quite annoying as I'm pretty sure that these hosts are configured in the same manner as those of our production cluster, which does not at all these problems!

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

To be honest, it looks like a problem with your physical network-

How is the physical network configured - are NIC connects it to the same physical switches? Are the virtual machines on the same subnet? If this is not the case, they are able to ping the gateway sbnet? Can you piing host IP address from the virtual machines?

I also moved it to a forum more approiate.

  • How to set up the virtual switch vmnet0 so in fact, it behaves like a switch.

    Hello

    I have a problem:

    My configuration is:

host of CentOS 5.3 using vmware server 1.06

3 clients (all centos 5.3 with vmware tools) installed

    web01

    DB01

    backup01

The three guests have public ip and use the bridged (vmnet0) network

The backup01 backups web01 and db01 every night.

My supplier can see that traffic on its poort switch that connects the host to the internet, and he wants to charge me for it.

The three guests (and host) are all on the same subnet. It is the local subnet traffic that does not use a gateway.

It seems the traffic between hosts is diffuse on my physical eth0 on the host. When I have some files between guests, it also appears on the page from my supplier of PCs followed AY. (Just likecommunication between 2 physical host computers are on the local network when you use a hub instead of a switch)

I thought it was probably the only way to vmware would work when using network bridges. Because the host doesn't know anyting on the clients ip numbers.

But when googleling abot this I found several docuemtents (for vmware server 2) telling me that vmnet0 is actually a sort of virtual switch.

If this is true this virtualswitch should know other mac adressess clients (arp who a..) and she must stop the internal traffic to leave the material.

Is not what is happinging. It looks more like a virtualhub instead of virtual switch.

So I was wondering if there are ways to configure the vmnet0 somehow. I was hot, but I can't find anything about it.

I don't want to change the bridged mode or coz internal use of the intellectual property of the plan is to spit the separate web01 and db01 to vmware guests in the furture.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

My idea was to put an additional physical switch between me and my switch to suppliers, but that seems to be a ridiculous solution.

    Any help is welcome.

    Concerning

    Hans Groot

VMserver don't use virtual switches: it uses virtual hubs. They are mislabeled - probably because "virtual switch" sounds more sexy than "virtual hub".

You can't change their behavior to be more like a switch

  • Network connections for the virtual machine

I have recently (1 year) past my office from a Windows computer to an iMac under 10.5 and VMware Fusion. My virtual machine is a member of our corporate domain.

I can log on to the domain, and after making only two entries in my hosts, outlook, mapped file banks, etc. excellent work! However, here's my question...

We use VNC widely remotely manage to help control our machines 100 + on our network. Our network is a network of class 10.25.1.XXX, and yet the VM is given an address 192.XXX.XXX.XXX in NAT mode.

If I want to leave the running virtual machine and connect from work, I can't do my type in the 192.XXX.XXX.XXX as address/subnet is not in our routing tables.

I'm not a network administrator, just the humble CEO of my company. Am I missing something?

    Thank you...

    Mr. bubbles

I can't give advice on how get VNC running through a NAT configuration, but another option would be to give your virtual machine a network connected by a bridge instead of NAT configuration.  Then your VM would have its own IP on your network of 10.25.1.x.

  • No network connection to the virtual computer after migration manually to the new host

We have added six new hosts to our environment, and I was tasked to test connections of VIRTUAL LAN on each of them before we move VM production of their.  This is probably a simple problem, but I am new to VMWare and need help.  I already talked to our network guys, and he assures me that the physical switches are setup and working properly.  We work a vDS.

I'm testing 14 VLANs on six new hosts.  All but one are constantly working.  (They all work on the hosts of origin which were in force before.)  I have a static IP configuration on my test VM and MAC is set to automatic.  I checked the MAC does not change when you migrate to other hosts and the VLAN correct is listed in the settings the VM network (it is not empty).  Him VLAN will work on three of the six hosts, but not all at the same time.  The strange thing is that guests at work are constantly changing.  For example, this morning hosts11, 12 and 14 may work, but this afternoon, that could change at hosts12, 14 and 16.  I don't understand why they would change on their own.

My test consists of VM testing, migration manually, powering back, then he ping from my computer off.  Of course everything works when I get ping responses.  When I get no answers, the test of the virtual machine has a yellow exclamation mark on the network icon in the system tray.

What should I do to fix this?

How is the network configured?  You have a different NIC port/cable for each VLAN or Trunking used on the side of the switch?

If you use circuits on the side of the switch, then your GRPE ports virtual switch a VLAN ID needs to match the vlan is underway to shared resources.  No matter if it's a standard switch or switch distributed... you still need this ID of vlan.

I've seen the random question that you encounter if missing one or more of of the uplinks on the side of the switch the VLAN.

  • Assign comments NIC to the virtual switch / Portgroup

    All,

After many search on these forums and the API reference guide, I can not find a solution to the following problem, we are going to have...

We use the Perl SDK to clone existing Virtual Machines and create new virtual switches and exchanges. However, what we can't understand is how to assign a NETWORK adapter on a virtual computer for the new virtual switch / Portgroup.

We would like to be able to create two new virtual machines and a new switch and add the two virtual machines to the portgroup on the switch so that they can communicate. At a later stage, we also want to be able to add a physical NETWORK card from the host to the new switch.

The making through the vSphere Client is quite simple, but we need to automate the task.

No indication on what we should do is appreciated. If it's easier to do using other APIs (such as Web Services), we are open to try this instead...

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy
