New computer, old hard drive. Activation?

I got an old compaq presario 5140 or something and it came with vista on a hard drive of preset. I recently built a new computer with parts and essentially have a new computer. I decided since my old hard drive worked well and was compatible SATA, I want to just install it in the new computer, too.  Now, windows tells me to restart my activation key is not valid, and I need to get a new (I him I had preinstalled about 7 years I have therefore had no idea here), buy a new key or visit support.
So I ask here what I have to do. I need my computer today for a job if I got quick responses would be greatly appreciated!

You cannot transfer a preinstalled license.

OEM and retail licenses:

If your computer is pre-installed with Vista, it is classified as an OEM license and is not transferable.

The license of Vista OEM is related to the original computer it is installed on and dies with the computer.
You cannot transfer it to another computer/laptop

If a license of Vista at retail, you can transfer it to another computer/laptop.
But it can only be installed on one computer at a time.

A single license is a single Installation.

See you soon.

    Paraxis

    Hi Paraxis,

Whenever we use the system image and restore from it, the hardware must be same, as has already been made to backup. The hard disk partition should also be in the same size.

You can use Sysprep on your computer and check if that helps you solve the problem.

Preparation system (Sysprep) tool is a technology that you can use with other deployment tools to install Windows on new hardware, operating systems. The Sysprep tool prepares a computer for imaging of disc or delivery to a customer of the configuration of the computer to create a new computer security identifier (SID) when the computer is restarted. In addition, the Sysprep tool cleans up user-specific and settings specific to the computer and the data that should not be copied to a destination computer.

Contact HP and get the OEM Installation disk and make sure you know your product Code. You need
the OEM version that everything is fine. You "might" be able to get Windows 7 for your system however
It will be more 'IFS' available.

  • Old computer is dead, HARD drive still alive. Can I install windows 7 on your new computer without formatting the old HARD drive?

My old desktop computer recently died of a motherboard failure.  As I understand it, I should be able to install windows 7 from my old computer to the new, but only if I delete the old installation.

Does this mean that I have to format the old HARD drive?  Because the old computer HARD drive seems to be alive, I would retrieve the data on a new machine first, before I have to format and I need to install windows on the new computer to get the data from the old HARD drive.

No, it is taken on trust that the old installation is no longer active, there is no mechanism to remove the old license in order to make a valid new. Remove the Windows directory (or rename) makes the old system inoperative.

You find that the automatic authentication fails on new construction and need to call the licensing Center to check that you have only one installation. Apart from the OEM rules if a license has been activated too often, and recently, it fails in a 1 time.

  • Had to reinstall CS2 in new computer Win7x64. Old hard drive of the computer is dead. Could not recover. Cannot enable reloading of CS2.  Any suggestions?

    I recently had a Win7 computer down and I decided to buy a Win7 upgrade solid x 64 computer.

Reloaded all my apps I had on the old pc (couldn't use the old hard drive.  He's dead!  New system has SSDS)

Each top-up went fine except for my CS2 software.

He said that I had to activate my software.  Not much so I tried via 'internet' and received a window "Activation Server is not available".

So, I went "Phone Activation" and got a window with my serial number and an activation number, with the Activation Type: Normal 24:24

He said to call 866-772-3623, which only said to go to www.adobe.com/go/activation everything which was take me for an explanation of the activation page who basically told me to do what I had done in the first place.  for example, no help at all.

I tried the direct number: 206-675-6222.  (The number was disconnected)

So my question... How can I get an activation code of my CS2 software?  Where should I go, either by phone or through the net?

You need to acquire a special version with its special activation code.  See the following...

  • I have blown my motherboard on an old computer and hooked up my old hard drive to the new computer and want to transfer my favorites on the new drive but cannot find where they are located on the old drive - any help?

My motherboard went bad on my old computer, but the hard drive was OK. I bought a new computer and plugged my old hard drive to it via a usb adapter. I would like to import or copy my favorites from the old hard drive to my new, but I can't find where they are. I was unable to determine the search for articles on the web. Be advised that my old hard drive is basically nothing more than a place of storage for files at this point. My old operating system is windows XP, and my new system is Windows Home Premium.

  • With the help of Windows Easy Transfer - need to transfer the old HARD drive to new computer - old HDD attached as external drive for the new usb port of the computer - help

New computer installed Windows 7 and gave me an option to use Windows easy transfer to transfer files, data, programs, etc. from my old computer.  All I have from the old computer's hard drive; a lightning strike fried either food or his mother by car.  I have attached the hard as a disk to the new computer using the usb cable provided with the external hard drive case.  It is recognized as drive E: on the new computer.

Trying to follow the instructions given by the Windows Easy Transfer software.  Get the software/folder from the old hard drive (drive E), but trying to run the software that I can't seem to do anything on the old disk.  When asked what is the former or the new computer - I respond to old, but no new file is created for the transfer.  When I answer again, a new file is created on the new computer (rather than the old HDD) and then he transferred again to new.  I can't create a file of whatever it is I want to transfer from the old HDD.

I can't use an easy transfer cable because the old computer does not only the hard drive.  I can't connect to a network for the same reason.  I only have the hard that I can attach to the new computer.  But I can't get the new computer to process the old hard drive separately for transfer purposes.  The only other option I can think of is to attach the old HDD to another computer, and then try to run the software in this way, but I don't want just the stuff on the old hard drive a copy to the other computer.

Can anyone help?  Suggest how to get the old hard drive files, data, transferred etc. to the new computer.  What are the steps?

    Thank you.

Do yourself a favor, with the old drive connected externally, in the browser, simply copy the data files to the location of Documents of the PC win7. You can not copy programs, they need to be reinstalled from media origonal. You can copy all the downloaded files instalation

  • Transfer of files from the old HARD DRIVE to new computer without an old computer. (He's dead - can not use) I have the hard drive, but need help to transfer my old files and settings.

    ·        My old Win XP computer died - it is completely unusable. I bought a new PC with Win 7 Pro and 1 TB. I still have the old HARD DRIVE (250 GB) which I have attached on the new computer using an external enclosure supports SATA drives. The external hard drive is connected to the computer in USB 3.0. I checked that the new computer can see the external hard drive. (I also used for backups by changing the hard drive with a 2 TB drive 'mass storage' - that works.)

I searched the internet for possible solutions and found no help. If the transfer of files from Microsoft would change the disc to analyze, it would be simple. But if I select the OLD computer it scans the disk I'm on (new) - automatically.

Is there anyone who has had the same problem? He must be because computers die all the time and people buy new computers - who then, somehow, they get the former transferred files. I could do it manually, but that wouldn't change the settings. Last resort would be to buy an old computer XP (SATA), replace the drive. Transfer the files, and then sell this computer.

You may be able to recover your data files, but I hope that you will set up your new system to automatically backup a second internal hard drive or an external USB hard drive.

This suggestion may not work, but it's worth a try. Buy an external USB drive enclosure. They come in two sizes 2.5 "for the portable computer drives and 3.5" for desktop disks. You can purchase adapters for 3.5 "envelopes so that they can also be used with a portable player. Place the hard drive in the enclosure and connect to a USB port of another computer. Several hard disks are more able to start, but the contents of the disc can still be accessed, read and copied from the disk because you do not use the operating system on a failed disk.

Here is an example of the type of device, I suggest:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=external+hardrive+enclosure&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=14388537836&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=556960941559985931&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_32uorbwbuk_b

You need only to the speaker, that you see are not necessarily more expensive. Thereafter, you can put an old hard drive usable, an abandoned because you need a larger drive internal, in the enclosure and use it as additional external storage.

  • My old computer died and I want to save filed from my old hard drive to my new computer

    Hello

My old computer died, and I purcassed a new p6230y of computer a HP. I installed my old hard drive in to the new computer as a second HD in hard drive Bay 2. I would like to transfer my files from the old HD to the new HD. I would then format the old HD and use it internally as a second HD. After the installation of the drive hard I can't find the old man (HD) on my computer. I see that the old HD has been installed successfully by running a diagnostic of the car. All this out OK. I can't access the old HD in some way other than the quotes, and when I start the computer I can see that a second HD is installed. What I am doing wrong? And what can I do to access the info on the old HD and use it as a second HD in my new computer? Am I missing some step in the implementation / install? Help.

Thank you so much. My knowledge of windows 7 is very limited. You helped save all my files on my computer. Thank you once again.

  • Possible to recover files on an old hard drive using the new computer?

Hi, my old computer CPU fried making UN usable. I just bought a custom P6150t of hp and I was wondering if there is some way I can install the old Hard drive in the computer I just bought. I really want to stay away from the team of geek or something that's going to cost me a lot of money. Any suggestions?

It is certainly possible, in fact, it should be fairly simple how experienced you are with computers. Hand, you have a few options I can think. Was of course since I am not aware of what kind of hard drive in your old computer, you will probably need to buy an additional cable\cord\connector to connect to the motherboard, and if it is an old IDE drive, you can buy an IDE to SATA as one of them.

This is all assuming you want to keep the hard drive installed on the PC. And although it may sound intimidating or difficult to do, it's really not! If you can put some screws with a screwdriver, you will be able to install the old drive if your new PC. Simply enter the model number of your PC to the HP drivers & support web page or click on the following link: upgrade and repair, (this is for the model number you provided) read the first couple pages & then proceed to PDF page #17. Read & review the instructions once in a relationship, print out the instructions if necessary, collect tools (flat head screwdriver & anti-static bracelet), then just follow instructions & take your time paying attention to the illustrations. It is frankly less work & easier than typing all of this out.

Either way, you can easily connect to your computer must use one of these: existingUSB-adapters IDE that allows you to directly access a device of ATA/ATAPI IDE interface. Everything is a matter of preference and what you are comfortable doing.  To find these items I already mentioned, just google 'em and either find a computer store nearby and investigate with them or order from a decent distributor in your country for the best prices. Overall, there are many more options that I've listed here, but they are all relatively will do the same thing; that is the type of player, you must convert a USB cord. Hope this helps! Good luck!! -tmt-
