New version of Firefox will otherwise not internet due to 'proxy server '?

I tried two times to update my firefox to the most recent (as of 07/18/10). When I did, I was unable to get anywhere on the internet. The message said the proxy of my server settings would not allow it and to make changes. I use a personal computer with Windows 2000. It connects directly to the DSL, there is no server in my house. I'm not too computer savvy but tried to use info tools but that just assume that I already know about the servers proxy, servers, etc.. I could remove the new version and load an old one stored on my computer and have no problem getting on the net. What is the solution that I can do? Should what steps I take. I'm not going to hire a guy to do what should be a simple task.

Tools > Options > advanced > network > settings, set your connection on 'No proxy', if you are not using a proxy.

«Firefox 3.6.6 added a new preference that sign of connection settings, proxy use "system settings", and the default value is the point.» This new pref does not affect most users, because they probably do not have a proxy set in place in their operating system.
