Newbie question: ESXi 6.0 free vs vSphere Essentials Kit

I currently have a server host running ESXi 5.5 (free version), accommodation mainly a lab with SQL servers and workstations Windows infrastructure.

I plan to upgrade the vSphere Essentials Kit and I was wondering what are the additional benefits I would get paid Kit essentials ESXi free 6.0 vs.

So far, I can think of the following:

-Possibility to install on two additional host servers (however I don't really have this requirement for the moment)

-Compatibility with VMWare as ALTARO and VEEAM backup software. (This would be beneficial)

What are the other benefits Essentials Kit would offer a server environment unique host which would be sufficiently attractive to force one to go compared to the free version?

Thank you for any comments.

ArnieC

Another great advantage will be the Server vCenter which adds lots of features and will help you manage all three hosts. Have a look here some of the additional benefits: http://www.vladan.fr/esxi-free-vs-paid/

Hi we are a small company with a new 1 and 1 old server sent us this question for the Department sales of vmware but have had no response.

We have two questions we hope that someone has had a few experiences with.

Currently we use free on our new server esxi5 if we buy VMware vSphere Essentials Kit

    1. is it just a matter of the conclusion of the license in the free version of esxi to give it functionality increase so there is not need to reinstall things?

2 if we have VMware vSphere Essentials Kit it would allow us to use tools such as quest vRanger pro or Acronis vmProtect for backup and replication connection.

It would be much cheaper than the use of VMware vSphere Essentials Kit pro and seems to do the same job.

    Thank you

  • features of vSphere 4.1 vSphere Essentials Kit 5.1 vs esxi

    Hello

I'm new here and I have my vSphere server knowledge is limited.

Our company is currently leading a free version of the server esxi 4.1 vSphere.

Now, we have reached a point where we intend to implement some automation of test for our software products. To do this, we need to be able to programmatically control the virtual test machines (power on / power off, go back to the snapshot, copy files, etc.). VSphere free version does not offer that, and it seems that we have to upgrade to a paid version.

    The question:

Is this the version licensed vSphere 5.1 Kit Essentials offers at least the same features that the free version of vSphere 4.1 offers? I could imagine, the very basic paid the 5.1 version of vSphere Essentials Kit has done some limitations compared to the 4.1 vSpehre esxi, same if vSphere 5.1 Kit Essentials has the feature of writing available to the "remote command line interface" (which we would need to manage the test program by computers).

    Tounsiiaa you!

    Gatis

I can't think of all the features of the free version that are not available in the edition of Essentials 5.1, except for the number of sockets/CPUs per host, which is limited to 2 with the Essentials Kits.

  • feature of vSphere API licensed on vSphere Essentials kit

I have a few doubts about the level of licesement to apply to our laboratory. We do snapshots via API against our stand-alone ESXi, so we need the "vSphere API' active feature. Is this feature included on the license "vSphere Essentials kit '?

    Thank you.

    Hello

all editions of vSphere paid has full access to vSphere API only vSphere Hypervizor free edition is limited to only read the API.

If you need backups through third-party solutions 3rd you will need API vStorage for the Protection of data which is also included

overall paid kits and vSphere editions.

  • VSphere API is available in VMware vSphere Essentials Kit?

    Hello

TL; DR: I would like to know if the vSphere API is available in VMware vSphere Essentials Kit.

We evaluated VMware vSphere to build an environment very small test & dev to work. Since vSphere worked well during our assessment, we will buy vSphere licenses.

We only need to operate a single ESXi host and we don't much care our virtual machines because they are used for testing only. Thus, we don't need features such as vMotion.

However, take us pictures and we depend on the vSphere API, because we use pyVmomi to administer our virtual machines.

Because we only run an ESXi host, need for API vSphere vCenter but did not need features such as vMotion, I think that the Kit Essentials fits our needs. But I'm not sure it provides the vSphere API. If anyone can confirm?

    Kind regards

Yes, vSphere API are available in the Essentials kit.

  • What exactly is in the VMware vSphere Essentials Kit

Yes I looked on the page and there seems to be a lot of xyz, but no definitive list of what is in the kit of essestials or even the pro kit.

Ideally, this as the backup software, but would be nice to know all inclusive.

VBackup Thinware said he needs of VMware Consolidated Backup, but Google takes me to the page on this point and when I go to buy, send me info about versions of VM, but nothing in the Kits except data backup API - tis more confusing for a new user.

Kits Essentials is a set of licenses. The kit includes the licenses processor vSphere and vCenter Server for Essentials for an environment of maximum 3 guests (up to 2 CPUs) and capacity maximum vRAM grouped 192 GB. Kits scalability limits Essentials are applied to the product and may not be extended except by upgrading the complete kit to a top-range package. Cannot be decoupled or combined with other editions of VMware vSphere Essentials Kits are stand-alone solutions

    1. You can download and run up to 3 ESXi 5 guests with 2 processors
    2. You can download vCenter server and run one instance of vCenter
    3. You can download VMware Data Recovery to be able to backup your virtual machines without affecting the performance of the virtual machine

    Hope this helps

  • Newbie question - ESXi v3.5 and 4 Mgmt

Try to get a better understanding of ESXi, different versions of it, how to manage the virtual machines that run on ESXi, and what is free and what is not.  I'm having a hard time getting an exact answer of any of the documents I see online.  I want to better understand before we get too much further in assessing these products.  It looks to me that VMWare ESXi gives it away but seeks to charge for management tools, such as vSphere which in itself has 4 different versions. Then...

    ESXi v3.5 is free?

    ESXi v4 is free?

What tools you can create and manage virtual machines on ESXi v3.5?

Which of these tools to manage ESXi v3.5 are free?

What tools you can create and manage virtual machines on ESXi v4?

Which of these tools to manage ESXi v4 are free?

    Thank you

    Dave

Although ESXi is free you still need to register and get a license code - other wise it is running in trial mode for 60 days - and at the end of the 60 days you will be not able to manage the host

  • ESXi 4.1 Standard for VSphere Essentials?

Hello. We have two hosts with Esxi embedded 4.1 standard. We use local, non-shared storage, and soon we will not anytime shared storage.

In order to obtain cost-effective centralized managemend (right now I have to use separate Vi clients for each host), I was instructed to check Vsphere Essentials.

It looks like it may work for us as we only use not the more advanced of the Standard license options, however I wonder if I'll have to re - install Vsphere on my hosts in order to centrally manage, or if the console provided with Vsphere Essentials will centalized management of my servers Esxi pre-existing without changing my installation current Esxi... does make sense? My Vmware sales representative wasn't sure of what I would have to do.

    Thank you!

    PK

VMware binaries are the same for all editions, so there is usually no problem with replacement of the license key. However, with the embedded edition that you mentioned, I'm not sure. It's an OEM version specific provider ESXi or did you install the version of VMware? In the case of a specific edition of the seller, you can contact the vendor to find out if the license change is allowed/possible. If it is not possible to change the license, it should be possible to reinstall ESXi on the USB/SD device without problems for virtual machines. All you need to do in this case is to reconfigure the host (for example, network, NTP,...)

About centralized management, there is also no re-installation of the ESXi servers needed. All you need to do is deploy a virtual instance of vCenter Server (based on Windows or the Appliance vCenter) and connect the hosts to this instance. This can be done without interruption of service for virtual machines.

  • ESXi 3.5 to 4 Vsphere essentials?

    Hello

I am currently using ESXi 3.5 and intend to upgrade to vsphere essentials. Is it possible to upgrade directly from esxi3.5? What is the correct migration procedure?

    Thanks in advance

So, what would be the correct procedure?

The backup is a good idea

You have a shared storage? In this case, you can manage your data.

Probably too, with storage local, there is a way to keep the data, but in this case I have ever tried.

Is there a problem with VM version mismatch?

No.... ESX 4 can run old virtual machines.

But I suggest to upgrade VMware Tools and upgrade virtual hardware-

  • Question of very fast licenses - vSphere Essentials Kits

    Hello

Can you have several Essentials and Essentials Plus kit by site?

That is to say - can you buy 3 x Essentials Kits for your site with 9 guests and build 3 VMs vCenter to manage each package of 3?

IE - if you use your first kit, you are eligible to buy a second for the next hosts a few in your company?

    Thank you

I'm not aware of a limitation for the Essentials Kits. The only one I can think of with a limit of one per site is an acceleration Kit.

Anyway, if you consider three Kits Essentials more, it may be useful to check if the benefits of vCenter Server more ESXi Standard licenses justifies the price difference.

  • Updated information on vSphere Essentials Kit

Hi all, I have a few questions about the upgrade of an ESXi host (and soon two) free license in an essentials Kit 4.1 vSphere paid one.

First question: do I need to reformat the machine (s) to upgrade or simply I can change the license key with the vSphere client?

Second question: the statement "... means of solution for small offices to virtualize... three physical servers. "who, with the essentials kit I can use the same license with up to three physical hosts with no restriction on the number of virtual machines, I put on them?

I ask because my plan is to divide my servers on two physical hosts and use a third as a machine of relief and emergency in the event of hardware failure, so a license kit unique essentials is integrate perfectly, but only if the included Storage API I would make backups while VMS are running and there is no restrictions on the number of physical host.

Thanks in advance for any kind reply.

The underlying OS is the same - the licesnse allows different features.

No need to refpormat or re - install, you simply apply your new license and it's done.

    Good luck

  • The upgrade of free vSphere vSphere Essentials Plus

Can someone point me in the direction of the vSphere upgrade free to vSphere Essentials Plus? I'm relatively new to vSphere in the installation process.

Yes, same procedure, but note that you will have a license key for version 4.x. If you have the license key for version 5.x and the host is version 4.x, you must upgrade your host to version 5.x or downgrade your license for version 4.x.

  • VMware vSphere 5 Essentials Kit for 3 guests (3 physical servers)

    Hello

I currently use the number of servers with the free version of VMWare ESXi 5.

So now I want to use more RAM and want to have more tools like backup tool, clone.

I've been reading in vmware site but it makes me a bit of confusion.

Can someone clarify this for me:

    1. what should I do after the 'VMware vSphere Essentials Kit' command that allows me to manage 3 physical servers, while I use "VMware vSphere Client" free edition?

2 should I change or action with "VMware vSphere Hypervisor?

    3. the fee of $495 is a right to life or it's annual fee? The subscription is required for first year only, is that correct?

    4. "VMware vSphere Essentials Kit' supports up to 192 GB of RAM per physical server and max of 32 GB of RAM per VM?

    5. What is the difference with "VMware vSphere Standard" edition?

    It's a few links I've read:

1 + 2) Just enter the new license key. No need to reinstall the hosts or stop the virtual machines. In the oder to the Manager of all 3 hosts from the same management interface, you must configure vCenter Server, which is included in the Kit of Essentials.

3.) after the initial purchase, it's your decision if you renew the subscription after the first year.

4.) there have been a few changes since release of vSphere regulatory policy 5. With the release of vSphere 5.5 all material limitations (cores per CPU and RAM) have been removed (see http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf).

  • Newbie Question: What should I put in for "Hostname" in the DNS Configuration during install ESXi

Note: I'm not a professional but rather an amateur trying to test the power of virtualization technology. I understand the IP addresses and how to configure my router, Setup static IP address and build my own computer, but I have some limited knowledge when it comes to the configuration of the servers. All I want to do is use this ESXi server locally in my house to run several operating systems on one physical box. I really don't want to have a server on the internet, I think that Comcast doesn't let me run the servers with dynamic IP package I have. In any case, here's my problem:

I followed with the installation of the link video tutorial ESXi in the intro email vmware sends you after registering. I'm around the 14:30 mark minute now where we are the management network configuration in the configuration menu of DNS.

The tutorial guys sets its hostname to something he obviously installation but mine appears as "localhost.hsd1.ca.comcast.net". I do not understand what I do when I set up a host name - and as I said above, I don't want to be put in place a server on the comcast network.

I think I'm a bit confused and don't know what to put in host name. I tried "localhost" and also "localhost.hsd1.ca.comcast.net" but hen t when I chose "network of test management", I got a message of failure for hostname.

Sorry if it's a super newbie question, but I will not continue to implement virtual machines or what then if this setting is incorrect. I appreciate your time in reading this / to help me. Thank you.

UPDATE: Ok, so since I'm impatient, I tried just letting the host name to what it was and continues with tutorial and realized that I could simply type the address static IP address from my ESXi server in my web browser from another computer on my home network to get the VI of the esxi Server client , then I typed just 192.168.1.50 which is that I put it was and it was successful! Is there a reason to set a host name then?

So, my next question becomes: can I run my windows XP 64 OS at the same time as the ESXi Server? Each are installed on different disks in the same physical box, but this computer is one of my main computers that I work on in windows every day so ideally I would have ESXi running but also be able to use the base operating system. Is this possible or am I just dreaming / confused?

Your welcome hardnesses, I think you can try to re-insalling ESXi with the hostanme you want, or you can connect to the existing installation with an unsupported option and try the same thing.
