  • Since switching to ESX4.1 backup problem

    Dear,

I am facing a problem with the latest version of ghettoVCB where the backup script that is croned do not save all the machines.

    Location:

ghettoVCB version 28/09/10 has been used on all of the following systems for the backup to local drives only, not for NFS, iSCIS or SAN.

The configuration files used was exactly the same apart from minor changes of the names of data store and the backup is started the cron vi.

A server with ESX 4.0.0,332073 ghettoVCB script worked without a single problem for months. This year the same server had been updated with a new installation of ESX 4.1.0,260247 (no upgrade) and now I am facing the problem that the script of ghettoVCB stops during the operation and seems to have problems around snapshots. The strange thing is I can run the ghettoVCB on this server without any problem manually from the console. And it is also strange that I use exactly the same commands to the console that are used in the course of the croned task. No difference in that.

I downloaded 2 debug logs, created on the ESX Server

-ghettoVCB log file started by cron, see http://pastebin.com/TtUUnJgk

-started ghettoVCB vi console log file, see http://pastebin.com/QKUuXuv9

If anyone has an idea about the problem I highly appreciate the useful comments. Also if someone could tell me what log files to check next to the exit of ghettoVCB.

Besides I also noticed that during a race ghettoVCB progress as indicated on the console is not 100%. Sometimes it just shows for example, 67%, but in the log files, it reaches 100%. Everyone aware of that as well? But this 'minor' problem has also been observed in the pre version of ghettoVCB 28/09/10.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Concerning

  • File deleted on esxi system after the restart with the last patch (256968)

    Hello

Since I installed latest patch on esxi (build 256968), every time that I reboot server esxi, I lost the files in / opt and the .ssh folder.

Before this patch, the files were still there on reboot.

Do you have any idea what's going on? Is this a new limitation of free esxi?

I ' am, using this file to VM backup with ghettovcb and everything works fine (until I reload )

    Thank you.

This is provided with ESXi, there is difficulty set of files, including any of the local VMFS volumes that are kept at the restart. There is a cronjob schedule that works for the configuration files important backup automatically at a local bootbank, which is then loaded after the next reboot, all files created by the user and most likely using the Busybox does not support console will not survive a restart by default.

If you use the ghettoVCB.sh - Free alternative for backup of VMS to ESX (i) 3.5, 4.x & 5.x , recommendation would be to store the script and all relevant files is the local VMFS volume or on the shared storage (NFS, iSCSI/FC SAN) volume.

There is a script in "/sbin/auto-backup.sh" that you can actually run to see what files are being backed up, you can easily modify this script to save additional files which will ensure that they are saved on a restart.

  • iSCSI MPIO + Jumbos

I see lots of information about iSCSI MPIO and Jumbo support with iSCSI sw in vSphere 4.0. I see not a lot of information of the HBA iSCSI and MPIO + Jumbo support. Am I missing something? The HBA have access to the same improvements?

    Thank you

HBAS are already supported these features in ESX 3.5.

And multipath also exist in ESX 3.x.

The 'new' storage module also accepts NEW 3rd party modules (only the Enterprise Plus edition) have native multichemin of the seller.

Right now there's EMC PowerPath/VE modules products (I suppose that could also be used for iSCSI) and a beta version of Dell Equallogic MPIO.

By Jumbo Frame, now vSphere supported also for iSCSI and NFS software, so you can activate and use it.

Also the map of 10 GB are now supported.

  • behavior of the api VMware SAN and NFS

While working on the vmware api Reconfigure_task fact face a problem. A single montage, in the same scenario, he started the exception as

incompatiable backup device 1 in the case of NFS, but in the case of SAN, it is throwing exception as a Configuration not valid for the '1' device.

My question here is that if vmware SDK behaves differently in the case of SAN and NFS for the same api?

Is there any document coming from where we can get more information on the different behavior and how to approach us differently through the c# application?

Basically, the answer is no. VimSdk acts not differently for NFS for SAN.

Of course, ReconfigureVM_Task can have constraints special som according to the storage used.

  • How to manage the SAN relating to software, when we import machine which is connected to FC SAN?

    Hello

There is a Windows Server 2003 running SQL Server with 2 local HD and 1 HD on FC SAN.  We would like to import this machine to a virtual machine.

    (1) initially, we would like to convert by cold cloning, but it seems that it is not a good choice, because we are not able to access the SAN for cold cloning.  This means that the hot cloning is the only choice for us?

    (2) there are programs like: Qlogic SANSurfer / Navisphere Agents / EMC PowerPath installed on this machine.  What will be the best way to manage these software?  Since we don't use them in VM, should remove the virtual computer or disable these services during P2V?

    (3) is there a problem when you import data / change the size of the disk for the one on FC SAN?

    Your opinion is requested.

If we opt for cold cloning, this means that after P2V, we

    (1) remove the LUN from the physical machine in Navisphere Manager

    (2) add the logic unit number to the host ESX Cluster

    (3) add as RDM LUN to the virtual machine?

    Right.

Between 2 and 3, you must make a new analysis of storage to see the new LUNS.

  • Overhead costs with software iSCSI vs NFS?

  • Buy SAN/NAS device for the practice of the VCP

In addition to having EDIT - two servers probably the same physical (or at least two computers that are on the compatibility list), I was thinking of buying some kind of NAS or SAN device, something like a model QNAP TS - 2xx or 4xx - TS.

Yet, I see that some people have used a laptop computer with a virtual machine running vCenter and another running virtualized iSCSI solution - like Starwind.

    Is this fair?

Other than gaining practical experience with the device QNAP himself, what advantage would it have compared to just using something like Starwind?

Cost is a factor too, and I see a QNAP device, even without that two-disc (purchased separately) is going to be at least $4-500.

There are a number of free options (as far as the software is concerned at least) at your disposal.

Openfiler 2.3 (www.openfiler.com) offers a solution for iSCSI and NFS and allows to set up a regime based on the hardware and software based raid.

FreeNAS (www.freenas.org) are another provider that offers a solution that allows you to use iSCSI or NFS to provide storage to vSphere.

Initiator, Windows iSCSI server, then that is not really free, as long as you have a Technet subscription, you can use a dedicated server with iSCSI storage are entrusted to him.

Nexentastor Community Edition (http://bit.ly/9RPsiG) is another solution based on ZFS RAID.

Nick weavers UBER VSA (as already mentioned).

The IX4 - 200 d is an Iomega offering iSCSI, NFS and Jumbo frames.

I don't know too much about the performance of all of this for the moment, but I am currently doing some Iometer test risk the IX4 and Openfiler (NFS and iSCSI).

  • Problem mounting NFS

    Hello

We have (or better, a customer of ours has) an ESX4 server with local disks.

This server also had a mounted NFS datastore.

This morning, one of the worst things that can happen in a datacenter has arrived: due to a power problem, everything has been turned off.

When the power came back, everything started well.

That was a problem: the NFS server probably began before the ESX, and so the NFS volume is now not seen (it is not important now)

In the vShpere client, the data store has disappeared: I don't see not dimmed in the list of data store, it disappeared completely

Also, if I run the command of "vdf" on the console, here's the result:

Could not open/vmfs/volumes/xxxxxx (where xxxxx is the NFS volume)

Someone at - it knwow hot to fix this?

I have already tried to restart the ESX Server, because there are many virtual machines running at the moment...

Furthermore, someone knows where are stored the vmfs mount points? I found the configuration in the the/etc/vmware/esx.conf file...

    Thank you very much.

    Marco.

Take a look at http://vikashkumarroy.blogspot.com/2008/12/cannot-open-volume-vmfsvolumesxxxxxxx.html , p.6. There is a situation described as yours.

    2 NICs for iSCSI/NFS

Will be iSCSI VMs running on the same vswitch and physical NIC as ESX access storage using NFS?

    Hey,.

I think that the comments above have covered the first vswitch.

    Now, with the others...

ISCSI traffic from a virtual machine must go on the portgroup 'Virtual Machine '.  So if you install, for example MS ISCSI initiator in a prompt, as traffic could exceed a port VM group.

The ESX ISCSI traffic goes on VMKernel/Service Console port group.  Remember, if you use the ISCSI Software initiator, you need to access the ISCSI target SC.
