Overhead costs with software iSCSI vs NFS?

If you use NFS to store your VMS VMDK files, could say nothing about the CPU above for this, compared to the iSCSI Software?

If you use the FC or iSCSI hardware, it seems, most of the work could be discharged at the HBA, but what about NFS that needs to be done in software? It will be easier that iSCSI from the Vmkernel doesn't have to manage the lower block level access?

Hello.

The difference is very small.  Check out the white paper of comparison of the performance of the Protocol storage in VMware vSphere 4 .

Good luck!

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 with storage iSCSI software to ESXi 5.5

I intend to upgrade ESXi 4.1 with which I have attached to ESXi 5.5 iSCSI software storage

I've updated all my guests who were on the SAN storage with no problems.

I would like to know that if it there's nothing I should take care before I update the host connected iSCSI to ESXi 5.5, as for the hosts with SAN attached storage I made to remove the cables of SAN before upgrading the host.

Also, if all known problems, you will be informed during the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 with iSCSI Software storage, please let me know?

If there is no different process to upgrade coz in ESXi 4.1 I do not see this link ports of iSCSI vmkernel ports software iSCSI but I know in ESXi5.5 we have to or I just launch a procedure of standard upgrade via the Update Manager and everything will be taken care?

    Thanks in advance

With ESXi prior to version 5, linking ports had to be done via command line. However, if it has been configured correctly, you should be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (assuming that the host has not been previously updated since version 3). BTW. the last time that I disconnected the host of storage for an upgrade has been with ESX 3.0.

  • How to clean and do a fresh install with attached iscsi LUN?

I intend to migrate both esx 4.1 with esxi5.1 hosts before you wipe and do a clean install.  Each host is connected to two iscis without, with 4 LUNS of each SAN attached to each host.  Each lun
spread over 3 degrees is. I plan on vmotion (not storage vmotion) guests from one host to another to make the upgrade.  I'm stuck on the determination of what will happen to the iSCSI LUNS after I
upgrade to esxi5.1 guests.  It seems that I should just be able to reattach, but I'm not sure.  Can I just attach the LUNS to the new installation 5.1 hosts and see all the
VMDK intact, or is there something that I am on?

And should the migrated to another host virtual machine continues to run on the iscsi san, while I upgrade of the host, they were released since then?  It seems that storage must be removed from the process as the LUNS
should not remain attached to the host after it is cleared and the iqn name no longer exists.

Am that I on the right track here?  What Miss me?

jackjack2, understand you this? I went ahead and moved to esxi 5.0 U2 of ESX 3.5 u5. Had to perform clean install and I have an iSCSI SAN. That's what I did:

1 a taken a screenshot from all my ESX host configurations. Go to configuration-> software adapter-> click on the iSCSI--> properties--> iqn copy map and alias-> click the dynamic discovery tab and note any IP address. You may need these IPs with the discovery of data warehouses later.

    2. after having documented the configs, put the host in maintenance mode.

    3. after maintenance, remove the host from the vcenter server. Connect directly to the host and close.

    4. remove all the network cables. Cable marking help before you detach the cables.

    5. clean install esxi 5.0.

    6. after installation, before rebooting, set the network cables.

    7. configure and test the management network. If your network management test fails, see if you have anything that is entered in the id vlan. Chances are that your port is not shared resources in the physical switch. In this case, remove the id vlan (during the configuration management network) work.

8 bring the vcenter server host.

9 configure the network, dns, time, etc.

10 Add a software iSCSI adapter. This card will have a new iqn. Either you provide this iqn to your SAN administrator so that it can update side SAN, or you can use the old iqn name.

    11. in my case, I made a copy of the new iqn and then deleted. Entered the old iqn name obtained in step 1. Additionally, entered the alias (since one was present before). After that, a new analysis and update still does not fill in data warehouses. So, I went to the properties of the iSCSI adapter and then discovered added tab dynamic addresses IP that did not exist before (otherwise, you will need to enter the virtual IP address of the cluster that you data store (s) belong to). Once the IP addresses have been added to the dynamic discovery tab, he asked if I wanted to rescan the HBAs. I said yes and viola! my data stores have been populated.

12 Add the host to the cluster.

Note that you can add iSCSI adapter when you affiliate you the host to the cluster. However, in this case HA will not be happy because no heartbeat of data storages will be detected. In addition, when data warehouses are discovered it may appear initially as not mounted. Don't panic. After a minute or two it will be mounted.

    I hope this helps!

  • Software iSCSI or Broadcom HBA w/TOE?

ESXi 4.1 loading on 3 Dell R710.  ESXi is picking up the 1 GB Broadcom 5709 as material hba, however nothing I tried helped me activate frames.  When I implemented the hba with frames and make a new analysis, he will not come to the MD3000i LUNS.  (The 3000i detects the hba and I added to the host in the iscsi handler... still no joy at the end of ESXi.  Also I configured ports on the 3000 to accept the extended frame).  If I leave the mtu to 1500, everything works well under hardware iscsi.

When I use the software initiator with the same NETWORK card, I can activate frames.  (Documentation is ESXi confirms that for the Broadcom, it supports IPv6 and jumbo frames, but you can't blame a guy for trying).

My question: which would give better performance?  Should I use the material hba without jumbo frames to reduce the load of iscsi, or configure software iscsi with frames?  If I understand correctly, the iscsi software has been greatly improved if I'm not really sure which way to go.

(I posted this question at the end of another thread and received no bites so I thought I would like to transfer as a new question.)  I apologize.)

As you discovered, you can really change the MTU on the HBA Broadcom adapters.

Performance is always difficult to answer.  Of course, the biggest advantage of Broadcom cards is improvement in the effectiveness of the CPU.  There are benefits to this.  Also, realize that the initiator iSCSI ESX and initiator of Broadcom can saturate a link of 1 GB for block sizes more that are useful, even in the absence of the frames.

So if you are looking for CPU efficiency, for the most part, the block sizes, the Broadcom card will use less CPU host for the same flow as the frames with the initiator of ESX.

If you are looking for a pure flow, both can fill a wire for large block sizes, and which does not change much with the introduction of jumbo frames.

  • ISCSI or NFS

    Hello world

I am deploying ESXi for a client and they are quite short on money. They need at least 2 ESXi servers in order to deploy servers in 2003. They have an exchange 2003 server, several domain controllers, and a database server. The database is a SQL database, but its current use is still quite small. Maximum memory usage is about 4 GB. I want to ask some servers ESXi with 16 GB of RAM 24GO a piece.

My problem is that in the long run, I need a storage shared for a my phase 2 plan. I then configure VCenter and apply the company licenses to be able to VMotion and some other services. I will also add more ESXi servers around this same time for exchange 2010 and some other applications. Usually, Exchange uses a lot of I/O transactions. I saw that exchange 2010 has decreased its I/O operations by dumping many of its works in the working memory. I was wondering if I can go out with a NAS and NFS. I would use 4 Gbps NICs to a switch. If I paste them, can I have a good link with ESX4i aggregation configuration? If not, is 1 Gbit/s over a good NFS? Experiments using such a slow link instead of 4 Gb/s FC?

If I can't go out with NFS, whereas I would have to ask a local storage large enough to hold the current servers I want to convert and create for this first phase. Then I would get SAN iSCSI for their next year that is coming.

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you

    Hello

Would you recommend but using ISCSI or NFS but at these speeds "low" for the next 5 years?

Mike Laspina has a good post on some of the differences between NFS and iSCSI, the other day.

Have a read of his article ZFS running via NFS as a VMware store

It is a little bit technical and focused on the opensolaris ZFS part, but the information you're looking for is especially in there.

  • Network with TOE iSCSI adapter

I'm going to my old server as a storage server and connect via iSCSI to new ESXi server. Former storage server will be linux with iSCSI software target machine. The question is: does make sense to have the NIC with TOE iSCSI on a new server if it is software target on the other? If so, then should I upgrade old server network adapter to one with TOE iSCSI? Or just buy without?

In this case, you can buy not NIC with TOE, iSCSI HBA with TOE, but, and there is no reason.

  • ESX 3.5i / software iSCSI?

I plan on upgrading a cluster of ESX 3.02 tomorrow to ESX 3.5.

I would use 3.5i because of its lack of a service console, we had some problems in the initial Setup, getting the iSCSI traffic because we have an iSCSI subnet separated from our hosted customer (who is on 192.168.x.x network).

Although I am quite familiar with 3.5i - I still try to use the software iSCSI with this version.   Can it be done?

    Sven

It should work without problem.  You will need to create a separate vSwitch for the iSCSI network with a kernel port assigned to the iSCSI IP address range.  You will also ensure that iSCSI is allowed through the firewall.

  • Portege R700 - Malware with software pre-installed?

I recently bought a Portege R700 - very well designed and built with an excellent specification. All is let down by the obnoxious behavior of collusion with Microsoft to send malicious software in the software loaded from Toshiba. It is absolutely inexcusable and unacceptable to load software that removes several times my IE8 homepage settings to replace it with MSN and the bling search engine. I hope I've stalked finally how to remove this MALWARE by editing the registry and delete the entries of thugs.

(Especially from Toshiba) anyone know how I can ensure it is permanently deleted?

Can someone give me a good reason why I should not report this behavior for the Commissioners of the European Union for violation of the antitrust settlement with Microsoft?

    I am completely disgusted.

    Hello

To be honest, I never heard malware with software/OS preinstalled Toshiba or Microsoft.
I m sure all software that will run are tested for the virus, malware, etc. so I put t think you have malicious software installed on your computer.

I also use the version preinstalled Windows from Toshiba on my two laptops and all the settings, I've defined in IE8 or other programs have never changed.

I recommend to install an antivirus program before going online.

I'm on a mac. I have 2 different versions of mac operating systems running on 2 different hard disks, because of needs of customers with software compatibility. If I update a cc adobe programs in a single operating system hard drive system, it will affect older versions of programs cc in the other system of operating system hard drive?

If, as you say, they are completely separate installations on separate hard disks, each with there own version of PS for example, there should be no way that they could interfere with each other! I assume you are using a form any of Boot Manager to load a specific version of Mac OS x?

I did something similar at the start in a similar situation with client compatibility and not had a problem with either interfere with others!

However, you share the programs somehow between different OS, so that would be another matter.

  • Is there a way to remove the software iSCSI 10W?

    Hello

We have helped the software iSCSI adapter, add 'Vitrtual Switch' and 'Port group' for iSCSI testing.

Now, we have already deleted the virtual switch and would like to know if it is possible to remove the software iSCSI adapter?

OR Alternatively, we can leave the adapter software there without deleting?

    Thank you

    Post edited by: TonyJK

You can remove the software iscsi adapter by disabling everything first. Under the SWiscsi adapter > properties > configure > disable activated.

After that, the server will request a reboot for the change.

After this restart, swiSCSI adapter would have been automatically deleted.

  • How to add the software iSCSI adapter in vSphere, ESXi 5.0?

    Hello

Please give me the steps to add the software iSCSI adapter in vSphere, ESXi 5.0.

    Thank you.

    Hello

In an earlier version of VMware ESXi software iSCSI adapter was included in the list of the storage card, but is not in the case of VMware ESXi 5.0. In ESXi 5.0 iSCSI adapters are not listed by default and must be activated first before we go away from configuration.
