SAN iSCSI and ESX3 Clustering

Reading the documentation indicating that if we deploy an iSCSI SAN with the initiators of software that this system will not allow clustering.  What is the correct reading?  No clustering function?  If so, why?

  • ISCSI and FC SAN VI 3.5

    Hello gurus!

I have a VI 3.5 with FC SAN environment, but now we need more hard drive space. I think the use of ISCSI SAN, but some people says that it is not correct (unstable) to use ISCSI and FC SAN in the same environment.

What do you think of this?

    Thank you!

You can always have FC, ISCSI and NFS presented to the same ESX Server, it will not come into conflict each other as long as you do not present the same logic of FC and ISCSI each unit number.

  • Questions about iSCSI and subnets

IM planning on a deployment of 8 ESX servers connected to an array of iSCSI on double dedicated switches.

    1. 2 cards on each ESX host network is dedicated to iSCSI and VMware dependent ontraffic.
    2. SAN iSCSI target consists of two controllers with 2 uplinks of iscsi on each controller (4 total)
    3. The manufacturer of SAN is suggesting setting up of their SAN ports in separate subnets for higher throughput

    • For the sake of simplicity lets say assign 10.10.100.1 24 ports SAN 1 & 3 and 10.10.200.1 24-port SAN 2 & 4
    • On the side of ESX, a single iSCSI VMKernel address will be 10.10.100.2 and the other will be 10.10.200.2.

    My questions:

    1. do I have to enable trunking VLAN on the side of the switch so that the initiator 10.10.100.2 ESX failover to the port of SAN 10.10.200.1 and vice versa, because they are not in the same subnet and therefore not in the same VLAN?
    2. If this is the case, will trunking VLAN also solve the problem if we were to buy an identical iSCSI SAN on the road and 2 subnets more setup for controllers, but still only have two cards on the ESX Server.
    3. I would assign the 2nd ESX Server in this config with the same IP addresses as the first, or I re them with differnet IPs (but obviously still in the same subnet as the storage arrays), for example ESX 1 is 10.10.100.2 and ESX 2 would be 10.10.100.3

Any other associated iSCSI I get with VMware, simply not able to think through this particular obsticle and I don't have the equipment to test it yet. Doesn't help that it's late in my part of the world and my brain power is depleting fast!

    Thank you!

I mean really isolated network. No routing between them.

Is the software of multiple paths that can pass a path to another, and if you need one network to another.

  • sVMotion between iscsi and fc?

I would like to know if sVMotion worked between iscsi and fc storage.  Just by looking at the possibility of moving from FC to iscsi on the road and wanted to check, it is that we give a host at the same time we can use svmotion to get the virtual machine out of a store on a datastore iscsi and FC database.

Ideally the VM perform during this process. Any witch hunt, it's if it was running?

Storage VMotion does not care SAN type, I carried out all types of migration between FC, iSCSI and NFS myself.

So don't worry about it. But beware this SVMotion create large extra i/o load, so run when it will not affect the services running.

  • SAN multisite and VMware Fault Tolerance

    Hello

My apologies if this is in the wrong section.

I have a requirement for the two main rooms, with SAN and ESX hosts in each room.

In total I have, for the sake of arguments, 200 VMS, with a split 50-50, so 100 in each room Basic.

I want to use VMware of fault tolerance for machines remain operational in the event of a major failure or the other room Basic.

I think I can use Multisite SAN to do.

Please see attached diagram fo what I want to do, I know that the diagram is not correct but I drew it fast just to try to explain the scenario.

What I want to know (or have help on) is:

Is it possible to use fault tolerance in this way have no downtime in the result of a failure of basic room? (basic rooms are not very remote and use the same networks)

How does multi-site SAN work, are there articles I can read to help me understand this?

Multisite perhaps SAN iSCSI or fibrechannel?

    Thank you.

SAN should resemble a single San for all ESXes. It doesn't matter how you do it.

    > If I my synchronous SAN mirror, might simply use FT for the vcenter as well?

It is possible for the small environment. In general, vCenter requires 2 vCPU, while FT works for uniprocessor VMs only. But do not overestimate FT, it is not a universal solution and the universal answer.

    > Also with FT, can you specify the server host in the cluster to act as the secondary?

Directly - no. The only way - to create link VM to any resource that is available for 2 ESXes only.

  • Why the SAN disks and drives NAS recognized differently by the computer?

    Hi all;

I'm a newbie in the sharing of storage.
Why the SAN disks and drives NAS recognized differently by the computer? Computer sees SAN disks as local drives, NAS drives as network drive, even if they are all connected to the computer by the same network topology.
I knew that SAN uses the block level transfer to transfer data all in SIN use level file transfer. Is that what this has something to do with which SAN and NAS drives are recognized differently by the computer? If so, how?

    Thank you.

  • How to compare premises, iSCSI and storage NFS for VMware ESXi 5 with IO Analyzer?

    Hello

I have 2 hosts ESXi 5.0 with a few virtual machines running. I would compare the IO throughput for my local storage, iSCSI and NFS vmware storage store. Can someone point me to the right direction? I read the documents and tutorials, but I'm not sure how to compare tests from these 3 options.

I have a need to compare the following storage options.

Local disk on the ESX host

    iSCSI on QNAP NAS device

    iSCSI on EMC e 3100

    NFS on QNAP NAS device

    NFS on EMC e 3100

IOmeter seems to be good tool based on reading, but still not clear where to make changes to pass tests of storage to another.

    Thanks in advance,

If you use IO monitor, then you must simply vmotion the VMS to the data store for the device you want to test, and then run the test (and Records results).  Can vmotion for the following data store and repeat.

    Thank you

Usually, you take NIC 1 gb connections available on your host and configure them as such.

2 network cards go to the San, most of the time that it is actually two networks with different subnets.

    1 network card next LAN

1 network card for the management

We only use three network cards currently on our guests, 2 for San and the other for management and lan. We use two switches dedicated to dedicated networks dual iSCSI san. This allows to easily add additional hosts in the future.

You get to decide a bit, but the double san network is pretty much a given. You can do all this of course with the VLANs as well. We use the switches unmanaged yet in our Organization.

PS: Passing path recommended is to have completely isolated storage of the LAN network / network of the user.

  • problem of iSCSI on ESX3.5

    Hello

I get a problem with my test environment.

I have 2 blade IBM servers (2 esx 3.5 U3 clustered HA) and I also access the SAN via ESX client software.

Recently, on the latest vocations, turned off arrives and all servers were restarted. After that, starting today, problems begin when I lost my SAN storage - it just disappear from the list of storage, while in storage iSCSI adapters always present. Analyze new have no results.

I did for an ESX Server-

I delete cluster, enable/disable iSCSI Initiator - LUN's appear in the storage adapters, I can see his ability, but when I try to add new storage I don't see that LUN available currently.

Sorry if my vmware terms wrong somewhere, I'm always 'essential' here. Also - I find no error. I know just what storage exist (I can 'telnet' to it), but I can not add it as a storage device (CHAP not using it).

Can someone tell me what I can do to check/test problem solving...

    Best regards

    Ilya

  • Backup exec 2012, issue of mpio san backup and ALA

We have a 4 TB File Server 2008, BONE is a physical server with hba to san volume where the files are located on.
so far, our backup exec server has an hba double iscis, with only using a port in the San.
in backup exec, I have created 8 jobs that run at the same time and creates 8 snapshots on the san to back up the file server.
on the side of san when snapshots are created, I can see that snapshots are assigned to the different ethernet ports, eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3, etc..
and start broadcasting our backup exec Server iscsi hba data, but since it is only using 1 connection her bottleneck through 1 Gbps.

If I install mpio on the backup exec server and configure the ports and mpio on the hba settings, when the san creates snapshots, the TI separate backups between the two connections of 1 GB on the hba iscis on the backup exec Server?

what I have to do all the other configurations on the San or switch layer2 (48 1 Gbps connections) that we use for our San?
I read somewhere that you would have to do something on the switch if you did 'aggregation of links' or 'bonding' but that mpio is completely different, and I wouldn't have to do something for her.

    any comments would be appreciated.

    Hello

Re: Collage/circuits only is not supported by the MS. iSCSI initiator  It's in the guide to iSCSi Ms.

RE: iSCSI hba.   What is a Broadcom iSCSI unloading mode or Qlogic iSCSI HBA?

So once you configure the other port on the DRUNK to be on the same SAN subnet, you can use MPIO.

You should already have installed the EQL HIT the DRINK server, is that correct?     If so, then run the Remote Setup Wizard in the Equallogic program folder.   There is an option "configure mpio.   Game to use only the iSCSI subnet, and you will see a checkbox for MPIO enabled shadow copy.  Which is enabled by default.

  • Can I use VDS with LACP to reduce on group SAN iSCSI connections?

I'm trying to reduce the number of iSCSI connections to my EqualLogic storage group. I currently use a standard vSwitch with two ports vmk by server for SAN. Can I use a single vmk with VDS/LACP to reduce my by half by server iSCSI connections and still maintains band bandwidth/redundancy?

I'm quite confident, it will work, but hoped for validation. Please correct me if I'm totally turned off, or if it would be not supported.

My volumes cover several physical devices (20 paths for 7 volumes by iSCSI adapter). Can I assume that with load balancing on an OFFSET of the source and destination hash value, I would get at least some balancing between adapters?

If you have several points of termination targets L2 - 4, Yes. For example an IP address, MAC address, unique ports or. Paths, volumes and devices are not relevant to the LACP.

If I don't choose a LAG, I can't visualize how it would reduce my iSCSI for my storage pool connections. I'm setting targets on my Broadcom cards, the vmk connects through these cards. Is the logic that is smart enough to only connect the active paths on an adapter or another in an OFFSET? I do know that I have make sense more that I might have to play with a SHIFT on a host isolated for a bit and see exactly how it will behave.

The adapters are more exposed. The LAG is a logical interface. Traffic can be sent or received through any physical adapter in the GAL.

Note: I would not use an OFFSET for iSCSI on a vSphere host traffic: seriously, Stop Using Port channels for vSphere storage traffic. Wahl network

  • ESXi 5.1 vMotion migration of VM with 2 vmdk: a SAN storage and other storage facilities

    Hi all:

I got a two host clusters that uses a shared SAN storage where my VM files are stored. Storage hosts is an aggregation of the two 1 Gbps link

path and so efficient throughput of 2 Gbps.

Now I need to install a virtual machine that will host our proxy server (Squid). Proxy servers needs a flow of large I/O structure of the disk cache. So I'm

Whereas by deploying somehow using two VMDK. One with the operating system and software, say vm.vmdk file and the other to the cache on the disk,

tell the vm - 1.vmdk file.

My idea is to put the file vm.vmdk on the storage, as well as other VM, I got, by putting the vm - 1.vmdk file to local storage, so does not link of 2 Gbps. say that

This SAN storage named "san_storage", host local storage is named 'a_local_storage' and local storage of host B is named 'b_local_storage '. So vm.vmdk is

on "san_storage/vm/vm.vmdk" and is shared both host A and B. say that VM begins to run on host A, vm - 1.vmdk file is "a_local_storage/vm/vm-1.vmdk".

I would like to know is there is a way, by script or so, to change the configuration of the virtual machine in a way which when I do a host migration has to B, the second disc of the host

virtual machine will be disconnected "a_local_storage/vm/vm-1vmdk" and will be linked to "b_local_storage/vm/vm-1.vmdk" at VM startup on host B.

I don't want to copy 'vm - 1.vmdk' from one host to another, because the proxy server parce que le serveur proxy peut peut fills again.

Is it possible to do? Or is - anyone has another solution?

I use ESXi 5.1.0 799733 on the two hosts with a license that allows vMotion and using vCenter 5.1.0.5300 build 947940 to manage.
