  UltraVNC seemed to work very well with win 7, but the only software of remote that I know works without fail and control on a very consistent basis, is the enterprise version of RealVNC. Yes, it costs money, but it is comparable to microsoft RDP, with additional features. They have a free version that does not cost any money and it's missing a few features. In a corporate environment, I am sure that this version is a no no.

  Solved. I put in my XP CD and booted from it, press ENTER for a new installation, then to the next option, press 'R' or a repair installation.
