  • Using a Mac as a media server

I would use a Mac Mini as the entrance to multimedia server of my sound system.

I need to make the Mac Mini iTunes DLNA server that can connect to the device that acquires different sources and distributes the sound for different areas of households and their wired speakers.

Did someone familiar with the different DLNA servers available?

I ripped my CD collection in MP3s a while back so I could listen to them on mobile devices, especially in the car.  But I would be re-rip them in WAV or AIFF to produce quality music CD to the home entertainment system.  So I would like to ensure that the DLNA server is not only reliable, but high enough quality that I wouldn't have problems streaming music in real time and without abandonment or loss.

I'd be happy to expertise and recommendations in this area.

    Thank you.

Some DLNA aka software. UPnP software includes the ability to "transcode" files video or audio from one format to another. So if you have a mix of DLNA clients that does support all the same format, it can convert the files for those in need. You can take this into consideration when choosing a package DNLA for your Mac.

Before I get to DLNA, I would say that the DNLA is old, poorly supported, behaved badly and I advise you if possible to avoid. There are other approaches that you can choose from are better for you but if not, then go to the answers below DNLA.

First of all, the other non-DNLA approach. To do the audio multi-room, the Prime Minister is to buy a Sonos system. With this you buy either pregnant Sonos e.g. Play: 3 or you buy a Sonos Connect which allows you to connect an existing amplifier. Sonos supports all audio formats supported by iTunes, including Apple Lossless, that will be the best format to use if possible. While Sonos is the market leader there are other brands offer similar solutions. Other systems similar to Sonos examples of Logitech Squeezebox, Roku SoundBridge (interrupted), an Apple TV3 or TV4, etc.. All these support Apple Lossless and all different rooms playing different titles at the same time.

A second approach is to use the standard Apple's AirPlay, many AV receivers now support AirPlay if you have a network interface on your AV receiver which these days is standard or an option on most. iTunes would then broadcast directly to the AV receiver using the standard of airtime.

A third similar approach is to get one or more AirPort Express WiFi-base stations, they have an audio connector, you AirPlay from iTunes to the AirPort Express and it outputs via its audio connector of the connected audio equipment that could be pregnant or audio/video receiver.

Now there is a limitation with AirPlay, only iTunes can only produce airplay the same content to one or more destinations AirPlay, if you want to play several different songs at the same time, so that's where the Sonos and similar solutions win. The iTunes can however be a Mac, or Windows, or an iPhone or an iPad.

Go to the DLNA. You'll probably find many DNLA for Mac servers are abandoned or semi abandoned in that they have not had a recent update and so may have problems with versions of Mac OS X or only work with certain customers or do not transcode well or at all. In other words like DLNA as a whole, it is rather a mess. You will find that you have to buy a package commercial DNLA although it will always be cheaper that buying a Sonos multi-room installation. I advise to test trial versions, be sure to remove each before trying the next.

  • How can I check my Mac mini for spyware and other viruses

How can I check my Mac mini for software spyware and other forms of virus? Recently, I received an electronic invoice which seems to come from Apple on a purchase that I did not. Unfortunately, I answered by clicking on a link that asked me to cancel or manage this purchase that led me to a site that didn't look like an official Apple site. I am afraid that simply by doing so, I welcomed the spyware on my Mac mini hard drive.

My Mac was purchased in 2011 and runs on OS X El Capitan (version 10.11.6).

    Kind regards

    Politkovskaya

Receive a fraudulent e-mail for a purchase confirmation, you did not is a very common scam. Remember that you are not misled by providing personal information solicited by this e-mail.

Unfortunately, I answered by clicking on a link that asked me to cancel or manage this purchase that led me to a site that didn't look like an official Apple site. I am afraid that simply by doing so, I welcomed the spyware on my Mac mini hard drive.

No harm will come of the fact that you wrote. Fraudulent Web sites that are made to appear as legitimate those who are specially designed to convince you to reveal personal information. If you don't have that, no further action is necessary or justified. Do not install anything, no matter the source or the apparent popularity, in response to one such scam. To do this would be the first step in a path well worn to the misery.

On the other hand, if you were tricked into providing personal information (like your Apple ID and password) you will need to change your password on Apple ID. Please write back for instructions.

  • Is it possible to connect my Mac mini to my Mac Pro laptop using the memory on my mac mini for installing software Ableton as I don't have 3 GB available on my Mac Pro.

Is it possible to connect my Mac mini to my Mac Pro laptop using the memory on my mac mini for installing software Ableton as I don't have 3 GB available on my Mac Pro.

I want to download Ableton software, but it requires 3 GB of free memory that I have available on my MacPro laptop not because most of it is used for my library of music because I'm a DJ.

I'm not sure how I can do it or not at all.

    Thank you very much.

    1. a Mac Pro is not a laptop. Its a big desktop computer.  You probably have a MacBook Pro, which is a laptop.

    2. No, you cannot share the memory (live RAM) or storage (disk space, which is not memory) like that between computers.

However, it is very very bad practice to have so little storage space available for your computer.   If you have less than 3 GB, you should seriously consider an external drive. and unload some files on the outside. Its best not to leave your hard drive to go below 10 GB of free space because it can seriously affect your computer's performance.

  • Old mini mac as a media server?

I have a MacMini 2.1 Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.83Ghx, 2 GB RAM Mac Mini that has only a DVI video port.  Currently, the mini does nothing and I would like to unload my primary iMac iTunes account and share the mini for different computers in the House and the current 1 (soon add another) Apple TV.  99% of my media is in iTunes.  I have a 2 GB external spare hard drive I can use on the MacMini for storage.

A colleague suggested I use the mini as a server multimedia and mentioned 3 applications/tools - Synology Nas free and Plex.  I would like to hear suggestions on how best to continue this Mac Mini as a media server using an external drive.  Is the fastest way to transfer just my iTunes library current of my primary iMac on the external drive on the MacMini?  Currently, my main iMac is where I manage my iTunes account, synchronize devices, purchase new media, etc.  I'm afraid that if I have the unloading to the Mini, how can I manage my current workflow?

Plex would be a good option

Synology is a brand of SIN do not know if their flavor of linux might work on a mac mini

I have one and use it with plex too

also have plex on my iPad, iPhone, OS X, windows 10

  • What Mac Mini for use with Adobe CC?

    Hello

I thought about getting a Mac Mini to use with a Wacom Cintiq Display(either 22HD or 27QHD) and I was wondering what would be best for the execution of the Adobe programs.

It seems that most of the people prefer the 2012 Mac mini with the quad core as opposed to the current gen using two hearts.

This brings me to two questions:

I see a huge difference between the quad core and dual core in the adobe programs?

8 GB RAM is enough or should I opt for 16 GB?

Otherwise, the mac mini may be a poor choice for what I would do, so any feedback is appreciated!

    Thank you!

What Adobe suggest to their CC minimum specifications in OS X, it

should not be necessary to buy a quad-core (they say that it would use all the cores).

A set of Photoshop CC system requirements suggest higher specs than one

Another help page for Adobe. This page shows the highest specifications, but can

not reflect the version that you are considering:

•Photoshop CC 2015.x system requirements and languages

    https://helpx.Adobe.com/Photoshop/system-requirements.html

If for some reason you happen across a 2012 end i7 2.3 or 2.6 GHz quad with

two 1 TB hard drives, they would be more easily upgraded to run an SSD and

keep a rotating disc; or install two SSDs. between that and 16 GB of RAM, these

should do a quick little computer. Rotational hard drives are the bottleneck.

But probably not necessary for Adobe photoshop CC. The graphics processor

is a limitation if you use intense graphic applications. GPU shares

standard memory with the system; From memory, there is little or no dedicated graphics.

    Although I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini i7 2.3 GHz quad-core (server) with double 1 TB

5400 RPM hard drive and RAM upgraded to 16 GB total rotation. It can

Use at least one drive upgraded to 7200 rpm or SSD drive more efficient.

The Mac Mini which is online store (check to see if there is an official refurb)

in the middle to upper technical version may be OK. The top level because of the upgrade

options in the configuration page (select to buy it, then see what options exist)

might be OK. The lower spec Mini doesn't seem to be viable for serious users.

New versions available now, because, you choose the configuration when

you order the computer: you buy an upgrade level you think you might need.

Memory is affixed, then exercise your ESP skills to look ahead, before buying.

The new Mac Mini 'top model' has better graphics than model end 2012.

An advantage for the Mini is you can choose monitors, peripherals, etc. An old

new stock Mini would have some OS X who was active as a base level.

Since none of these units have a system backup media. Is online recovery there.

My Mini comes with the Mavericks 10.9; 10.9.5 functioning properly. Partitioned,

the discs could dualboot mulitple systems and their applications more recent specifications.

(You can pay like nine awards for the end of 2012 Mini i7 quad, used clean-shaped).

I had considered to be a non - retina MacBook Pro 13 inch 2.5 GHz for once.

It was the time when they were more common in the 'special offers' Apple

refurb store page online at decent price; then buy RAM upgrade later.

In any case, this has become a long rant a few detours or details were

omitted for the sake of clear path back to the main topic. Since I was late

2012, mac Mini and it's more of the half upgraded for most all that he can do

I would probably say try a. If you can find a new one at a fair cost.

If the cost is too high, you can get a new Mac Mini to higher specification

the Apple Store. They are dual-core. Adobe applications do not seem to need

the advantage of the use of quad-core processors or. (these run virtual cores, too;)

so if you have the appropriate application, the quad core turn eight - virtual.)

The option AppleCare extended warranty covers to buy new equipment.

It would have supplied with El Capitan, if the current new stock. This fall, there may be macOS

Sierra - if you happen to get that stock again - at the end of the year. Not sure

If or when the hardware upgrade version configurations may appear.

Anyway, it's more a kind of letter. Sorry about that...!

  • Best hard drive Mac Mini for CC

I get my grandson a Mac Mini to run CC and I would like to comment on the choice of hard drive. It will be a high school sophomore in the fall, taking the Junior trail class multi media and use Photoshop and the Prime Minister a little.

    I'm looking at: Mac Mini

    • 2.3 GHz Quad - Core Intel Core i7
    • 16GB

Now, if you had your choice what drive would you and why. I take into consideration price, speed and scratch on the disc and want to get the best bang for the buck. I am considering the SSD for speed and then perhaps down the road I might add an external for Scratch disk space. I have not use CC but was prepress for many years and has spent a lot of time in Photoshop myself so I know he has a lot to learn and wants to maintain its level of frustration to a minimum. Any thoughts?

1 TB 5400 RPM Serial ATA hard drive,

    1 TB Fusion drive,

    256 GB Solid State Drive

Thank you for your comments :-)

    Ask https://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/hardware_forum of Premiere Pro

In general... SSD for the OS and all the software... internal 7200 RPM for data files... If external, it must be USB3 or eSata, USB2 not

  • Cloning of a Mac mini with application Server

We bought a condo in Florida and I want to my server it doubles. I use Mac mini (2 different models) with 2 drives external (one for Time Machine backups) and one for data.

What is the best way to install the Apple Server on Florida related to the Mac mini so I don't have to install it from scratch?

Yesterday I tried (in vain) to use the Migration Wizard to move all of my Mac mini to the Florida-bound one. Can I use 3rd party app "Carbon Copy Cloner" instead?

Any recommendations on how to configure the 2nd server would be appreciated.

The replication server is a relatively trivial process and can be accomplished by using disk utility.  However, the source drive and the destination drive should not be active at the time of cloning.  For example, you have Master Mini and you want to be replicated on Mini replica.  The best way to do it with the included tools must start Master Mini from another disk that contains an operating system to start.  Then start the Mini replica in target disk mode and connect it to the Mini Master (already started from another drive).  Disk utility to clone the Master disk on the drive of replica.

Ah, but cloning is the easy part.  The question I have for you is that you really want an exact replica?  The reason why I ask, is that your current server should have a name and a fully qualified domain name.  It's server.pauljohnson.com and it has a 10.0.0.10 IP address.  If you clone the device to another Mac, there will also be a name of server.pauljohnson.com and it has a 10.0.0.10 IP.  If two of your networks are configured on the 10.0.0.0/24 subnet then you won't be able to connect to each other.  Similarly, if you depend on external access to devices and must comply with DNS, then you can only point to one of the servers, unless you have a form of installation program to distribute the load between the two locations of load balancing.

What services run you on the servers other than the Server Time Machine?  Do you intend to have a VPN tunnel between the two institutions?  If you use Open Directory, and DNS, you can configure master and replicas of the two services.  Of course, this should only be done with a tunnel VPN in place I would not recommend exposing these services to the internet.

Then await you replicate data also?

Start with a list of services and a list of expectations about how you want client machines work when moving from one place to another.

In other words, can I copy the files from the "Shared" location to my new macbook, so that I can just eject the imac and be good to go? Thank you.
