Old files of windows xp

I have recently updated from Windows XP to Windows 7 and I lost my Realtek HD 7.1 Surround Sound. Installation and drivers for this program are on my motherboard Utilities disc for Windows XP that came with my computer, but I can't get it to load on Windows 7. The file is in the "Old Windows" file that was created when I did the update. My question is: can I move this program of the "old file" file in my Windows 7 program file? If this isn't the case, any suggestions on how I can get this program back?

Assuming that just because you said that you went from Windows XP to Windows 7, although it would be a new facility really - you have 32-bit Windows 7, you need to download, SAVE extracted (don't run is not on the Internet), if necessary and then run/install the following - in order:

  1. http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/ati_system_drivers_mb.zip
  2. http://DL.msi.com/download_files/MB/dvr_exe/ATI_SB8xx_RAID_732_mb.zip
  3. http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/realtek_pcielan_7_mb.zip
  4. http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/realtek_hd_audio.zip

The last of them is the audio driver - but you gave essentially clean installed Windows 7 - you must upgrade all THE drivers - do not use the default who just happened to work.

Now - if you decided to go Windows 7 64 bit instead...

  1. http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/ati_system_drivers_mb.zip
  2. http://DL.msi.com/download_files/MB/dvr_exe/ATI_SB8xx_RAID_764_mb.zip
  3. http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/realtek_pcielan_7_mb.zip
  4. http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/realtek_hd_audio.zip

The only difference really is #2.  The rest is the same download (32-bit or 64-bit).  Once again, the last of them is the audio driver - but you gave essentially clean installed Windows 7 - you must upgrade all THE drivers - do not use the default who just happened to work.

It is the best order I could come up with – making sure to get the chipset of the motherboard, the HD controller and networking before the not-so-essential audio driver.  ;-)

Oh - and the old program files or directory 'Windows.OLD' or what is essentially there for the sake of posterity.  Because you jumped from Windows XP to Windows 7... It is essentially a CLEAN installation and you need to install all your programs from their installation media.

    Hello

Sounds more like you did a clean install on a new folder without formatting. If this is the case, you can retrieve data from the windows.old folder, but programs like MSWorks will need to be reinstalled from their original installation media. An update includes necessary registry entries and transfer program files, a fresh install in a new folder does not work. • old files of windows - cannot remove - access denied

    Original title: access denied

I have two HD in an old windows files remaining and I want to delete what is not delete and I tried to delete to CMD and also modified the CMD properties but at the controls, he always gives access denied. My window is 7 64

    Hello

Thanks for posting your query to the Microsoft forum. I will definitely help you with this.

This problem occurs because the Recycle Bin does not recognize mounted volumes. For example, assume that the structure of the next unit is used:

C drive is drive 1 gigabyte (1 GB) that uses the NTFS file system.
C:\Host-dir is the mount point for a separate 9-GB drive.

If you try to delete a folder with the path C:\Host-dir\Mydir, Windows Explorer interprets the folder as being on drive C and tries in vain to move it to the trash on the C drive.

Use the SHIFT + DELETE key combination. This allows to bypass the Recycle Bin.

I would suggest trying the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: I suggest you run the command in elevated command prompt and see if it helps below.

    1. Go to Start, click all programs and open the Accessories.
    2. Right-click on command prompt in the list programs, and then select run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click OK.
    3. In the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:
    • TAKEOWN /F C: /A

4 then try to run the following command.

    • TAKEOWN /F C:

This will give you the admin and your permissions of full account to all files on the C: drive

Method 2: Activate hidden admin account

    1. press Windows + R keyboard button.

    2. type cmd in the run bar.

    3. in the command prompt , type this command: net user administrator / Active: Yes

    4. press enter and restart the computer.

Try to delete the folder Window.old .

If you are able to do so disable the hidden admin account.

To do this, follow the steps:

    1. press Windows + R keyboard button.

    2. type cmd in the run bar.

    3. in the command prompt , type this command: net user administrator / active: No.

    4. press enter and restart the computer.

  • Windows.Old file

I have reinstall my pc. I found out about windows.old file after. It occupies a lot of space (19 + GB). is it safe to delete them? or will it hurt on my reinstalled windows 7 HP Touchsmart 310? Thank you

    Hello:

It is perfectly safe to delete, but check once more that you can keep all the files.

You can easily get rid of the windows.old file (once check you it again once you may have forgotten to back up all the files), by launching the disk cleanup utility and click the button files system at the bottom left of the window cleaning disc cleaning.

When it's done to calculate, you will see the folder windows.old in the list of files - you can remove. Check that and it will be gone.

Then run disk defragment tool to compact disc because there is a huge 'hole' where was the windows.old folder.

  • Windows.Old files

Due to errors, I reinstalled windows 7 on my laptop for the 4th time and have almost no memory.  I have 3 windows.old files that take up a lot of place and wonder if it is safe to delete these.

    Hello

As these files contain only files from your previous installations, if you have everything you need for personal data, etc., you can safely remove them.

For more information on how to do this, see the document from Microsoft at the following link.

  • Process held during the upgrade to Windows 7 windows.old files

In the months I have updated Windows Vista to Windows 7.  Unpon update I found the C: drive was almost filled to capacity and had established that about 155 GB of files are now in a folder called windows.old when I saw the C: drive with explore.  I was able to recover some of the files in subfolders: Documents and Favorites and hoped to return to garner extra of the content I rmembered I could use if migrated on space available.  Subsequently, the files: Windows and Windows.old were more visible.  It would be nice to collect a little more elements of the 'old' files, but of equal importance would be the prospect of eliminating the overhead of the files ~ 155GB now unusable.  (1) how I see these files?  (2) how can I erase what I don't want when I see it?  (3) is there a risk to just delete the program files that are stored in the Windows.old folder?

  • "Compress old files" not reset not in Windows XP

After running Disk Cleanup with "Compress old files" checked, it shows still 79K. I rebooted and represented the disk cleanup, but still the 79K.

Why the amount has not been reset to 0K?

What would you choose to compress old files?

Do you know what he does, how he does, why he does it and what are the consequences?  Most of the people do not - they choose just because it "sounds" like the right thing to do or it "could be" a good idea.

A popular complaint from users is when they choose that option, their system seems to stop, maybe for hours while XP trying to understand what are the "old files" and what to do about them.  How do you know what is an "old file" and what happens if XP think files are old, but they are not old to you?

The files more that you have on your system as much time it take and he can just stuck forever and never end up (or you might get tired of waiting).  If you have 1 million files on your system you can wait very long for cleaning disc finish or it can never end.

And - if Windows find files to compress and that part works, and something you do on your system later needs these compressed files, they have to be unzipped before they can be used.  This will make your system run slower (while you wonder why it is and what to do about this).

Here are some ideas to consider involving all withdrawal that disk cleanup option - then your disk cleanup will run in a Flash:

Disk Cleanup runs slowly, the most likely reason seems to interrupt or uses excessive CPU is usually due to the option compress old files.

Compress old files comes from the good old days, when hard drives were weak and slow, and he had to each byte, you can get on your hard drive for programs and things.  Today, thanks to modern technology, it is almost superfluous.

Compress old files is supposed to compress the files "have not accessed for a long time" I never found someone who can explain what "were not consulted for a while" means.  What is 'a bit' to XP?  A week, a month, a year, 5 years, is it and how can we change it if you wanted to?

If you want your clean disc to run faster, I would just remove the option compress old XP disk cleanup files since it is known to crash or give the illusion of being hanged.  If you have 1 million files on your system (or even a few hundred thousand), you wait very long when you run disk cleanup your system may appear to be hung (and maybe it is).

I really don't think that with the technology available today that compress old files is necessary.  It would also slow down if XP needs unzip a file.  Besides, nobody seems to be able to tell me at what age an old file is in the XP terminology... what was simply a file become old?

To get the best performance, I just remove this 'feature' and never see him again, and then disk cleanup runs in a Flash because it didn't get old files to compress (some old way).

That adjustment will reduce considerably this time it will take your disk cleanup to run (I mean a lot).

It is a 'problem' for some systems that Microsoft has done an article on how to disable it (mine is disabled).

What's up guys?, I have a Compaq Presario supplied with the Windows Vista operating system, 32-bit. I backed up all my drivers on DVD and I downloaded a clean copy of Vista using an ISO on a DVD burner. I reinstalled the new copy put in my original product key, and he agreed. I reinstalled my drivers and all seems to work fine. I transferred all my data, mp3, jpeg, etc. for Flash readers and/or new programs on the new OS.
