Old Timers new to Windows 7

I don't know a lot about the changes in the new computers or software, so I need help step by step instructions for Windows 7.

We (my husband and me) which is held offshore, as long as we could get new computers and switching from Windows XP to Windows 7, but my husband's computer has stopped working, we had to buy a new.  In addition, I understand that April 2014 Windows XP will become more or less obsolete, because MS will bring no more than issue patches or support.

The new Dell computer came with preinstalled software and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (OEM) product key.  My husband has decided, after the purchase, he wants Windows 7 Prossional.  Neither one of us has used Windows 7 and are intimidated with all the new information from the computer.

I went online and ask about upgrades, but I'm still confused.  I looked into MS Windows 7 Professional Upgrade, but understand that this software is only used when upgrading from XP or Vista to Windows 7.  I asked him then on the purchase of upgrade Express MS, but it seems that everyone is out of stock, including Ms.  So, now, I understand our next alternative is to purchase a new full commercial version of MS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.  Which is fine, because we prefer to own the software in case of computer problems later.  Have I got this right so far?

If we buy the new full commercial version of MS Windows 7 Professional can we just spend the drive included?  And if so, how?  This no problem with the installation of Dell computer, no problem for internal as parts so the map chart, etc or no problem to any other software that Dell might have preloaded?  What is clean install?  Clean install applies it to what Dell has loaded or caused to the computer or applies to what a person can add, download or do to a computer once they start using it and then decide to upgrade?  My husband's new computer is still in the box.  We did nothing with him again, because we want to know with certainty how to upgrade to Windows Home Premium to professional Windows and do it before using.

Thanks in advance for any information and help.
