Only 1.6 GB of RAM comes in the "usable" name, the rest is "system reserved."

I'm working on a Compaq Presario CQ57 laptop. I chose to move the RAM from 2 GB to 4 and it shows more than 1.6 GB as "usable". Before the upgrade, I just put the .4GB up to the shared video memory or something, but being not not be able to use more than half of what I installed is just ridiculous. I checked that box to a check in 'msconfig' is unchecked and also checked that there are no parameters pertaining to it in the ill-defined and also updated BIOS update BIOS, but I'm still having the same problem.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

AHA! I thought about it. In a ditch last attempt to repair the computer, I have reset the BIOS settings and that fixed the problem immediately. I swear to you that I have sifted through these settings more that once and never saw all the options type of conflict, but it works now. Good luck to anyone else having this problem. ::

I want to adjust use 8 GB of my 12 GB of ram... How can I solve this? do you need advise please...

    Photoshop CS5 installs as a version and a 32-bit 64-bit on x 64 OS.

Run the 64-bit version to access all of your RAM.

Run the 32-bit version if you need compatibility with older 32-bit snap-ins.

Look in the Start Menu for links at a time.  The 64-bit version is tagged with (64 bit) after his name.

Hello, I would like to know if someone can help me...!

I have a portable P100-286 Toshiba with the following specifications:

    2 GB RAM (2 x 1048)
NVIDIAÃ? GeForce Go 7900 (memory: 512 MB)
    Vista Home Premium 32-bit

According to this specification, the laptop can handle up to 4 GB of RAM:

    "Memory system: standard: 2 048 (1, 024 + 1, 024) MB, maximum of extension: 4 096 Mo, technology: DDR2 (533 MHz) RAM.

I just upgraded using 2 x Corsair 2 GB of RAM Sodimm DDR2 667 MHz/PC2-5300. I understand that Vista 32 bit may not report all 4 GB of RAM (it is not, only 3 GB reports), but I understand that Vista Service Pack 1 can solve the problem.

However... confusedly BIOS ALSO notes that 3 GB of RAM. Does anyone know why the BIOS is not seen all the 4 GB? I tried to read about it online, and some advocate a BIOS update. However, many people also say it would be extremely risky.

Can someone give me some ideas as to what I can do to the BIOS then it recognizes all the 4 GB of RAM?

    Thank you very much!

You're not 100% good. The 32-bit Windows OS cannot use the entire 4 GB due to the limitation of the 32-bit operating system. After the installation of Vista SP1 will display full 4GB but it will still use only 3 GB.
To use all of the 4 GB, different components like CPU, BIOS, OS and chipset must support this. If one of these doesn't support 4GB while the laptop components will use only 3 GB.

    Update the BIOS

People are right. The update of the BIOS must help to recognize the 4 GB in the BIOS.
But it s also good that the update of the BIOS is risky.
If you want to use a bad BIOS or bad procedure to update the BIOS that can damage the ROM. module

My apologies, I must have misread the topics when I did my first answer. For some reason, I got it in my head, whether you use Windows 7 32 bit.

I stand by my original comments well that although I appreciated now that you are referring to Windows XP.

If you want to go to 64-bit Windows XP I'm not sure if this is even possible now. Unless you buy a commercial version second hand. If you can, make sure that it comes with an installation CD.

To check the compatibility 64 bit XP the following may be useful...

It will be even more important to check the hardware/software compatibility via the websites of the manufacturers.

I would like to install Windows XP on my computer and get rid of the Vista operating system.  Can I do this?  I only have 512 MB of Ram and 32-bit processor.

    Hello

There are a few things that you would have to do to install XP instead of Vista:

    1. contact the manufacturer of your computer and see if the XP drivers are available for your computer model to make sure that XP has worked properly in this regard.

    2. If the XP Drivers are available, buy a XP disk operating system / license. Try local computer repair shops because Microsoft sells more than XP and online sale buy you pirated copies can cause. Be very careful.

3 XP runs with 512 MB of RAM, although a little slow by today's standards.

    4. do a clean install of XP. Make sure that all your data is backed up as the hard will be cleaned of everything during the Installation of XP.

    Hello

    Toshiba technical support:

    * There are several conditions to use all 4 GB memory on a laptop computer that has 4 GB of memory installed *.

The chipset must support 8 GB of address space.
Intel PM965 and GM965 chipsets and newer or AMD64 CPU could process up to 8 GB.
for example, the family of chipsets Intel 945 endured only upwards of 4 GB address space.

The CPU must support instruction set 64 - bit mode (Intel? EM64T or AMD64).
For Intel CPU, it could be checked on the Intel Web site: http://processorfinder.intel.com/

The BIOS must support the memory remapping feature.
The newer BIOS versions are supporting this feature.

A 64 bit version of the Windows operating system. Note: All the above mentioned conditions must be met to use all 4 GB memory on a laptop.

Your laptop motherboard supports up to 4 GB, Windows 64-bit installed. Perhaps, you must update the Bios.

And 1 thing, in the configuration of the system (administration tools), go to start, click on advanced, uncheck (if indicated) maximum memory

Hi guys, I have last laptop Pavilion hp convertible. It has 4 GB of ram, but, on the Control Panel, it says: RAM: 4.00 en - 1.86 GB usable. Could someone explain this, or tell me how to solve this problem? Thank you.

    Hello @techyguy,

Thank you for joining the HP Forums!  You have come to the right place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community!

I read your post on your x 360-11-k102tu Pavilion not recognizing not not the entire memory as usable and I wanted to try and help you.

The system recognizes all of the 4 GB of memory installed, but you can always run first test for hardware failures .

Microsoft has detailed information here explaining the usable memory and gives a few troubleshooting steps. The document is listed as Windows 7, but the same settings should be listed on Windows 10 as well.

Please let me know how it goes.

3.6 GB is a very good number - much higher than most people's.

All versions of Windows 32-bit client (not just XP/Vista/7/8) have a
Address 4 GB of space (64-bit versions can use much more). It's the
theoretical upper limit beyond which you cannot go.

But you can't use the whole address space. Even if you have a
Address space of 4 GB, you can only use around 3. 1 GB of RAM (and as I
said, you do much better than that). This is because some of
This space is used by the hardware and is not available for the operation
system and applications. The amount you can
use varies, depending on what hardware you have installed, but can
range from as little as 2 GB to 3.5 GB. It's usually around
    3. 1 GB.

Note that the hardware is using the space, not the real address
The RAM itself. If you have a larger amount of RAM, the rest of the RAM
goes unused because there is no address to map space to.

Where are you seeing the 3.29 "usable"?  It would be fair that the rest is in fast cache.

  • to install the 4 gigs, but Windows 7 seems only works on 2 GB RAM?

I recently installed a new hard drive 2 TB with a new operating system windows 7.  My pc has 2 GB for a long time and that I was going to go to 4 GB, but when I try windows 7 does not start. It works very well with my old ram, but hate the new ram, although it will run one of the single stick 2 gig. Is there a way to get win7 to run on 4 gigs or am I S.O.L.?

-Just to clarify - you said - "if it runs one of the only stick 2 gig.

Is the new stick exactly the same as the original key
-Motherboard and RAM mfg will ensure never compatibility of one (or two) of stick of extra RAM to another brand, or model. Often the RAM works, but there are various reasons to reduce performance, and in certain cases matched miss RAM will not work.
For this reason they mfg RAM in pairs, or kits.
The best chance of success and maximum performance are if the RAM has the same speed, latency, and voltage
    For example - DDR3 1600 MHz @ 9,9,9,24 - 1, 5V.

If you have had the machine for a long time try cleaning the RAM slots with a small brush.
They may have dust is blocking some of the contacts. I had it just happens this
week when adding two other glue to an old machine.

Also check that you are using the slot for the stick of extra RAM if you had one before.
Most motherboards have different colorful locations in order to identify 'pairs '. Some motherboards are configured
If you ignore a slot when using two sticks, while some are set up to use two sticks, side by side.
