Suggest that you inform the sender to avoid sending attachments in formats of .dat files.
Meanwhile, save it on your computer...
1.) If you have Excel, see if you have a bit of luck to open it in Excel.
2.) If you know it's an accessory photo, save the attachment already saved and change the type of file in png or jpg format.  If you know that it is a document, then chabge it in .doc format.
