opening of attachments

I used to be able to open attachments to emails, but can do so no longer. I had to reinstall Windows XP recently and maybe that's the problem. I have an msn.com account. The attachment, I can't open is in .xls (spreadsheet) format. When I try to open it, I get a message saying windows cannot open this file. "Windows needs to know what kind of program has created. He offers to look it up automatically, or let me manually select from a list of programs. None of these options worked.

It depends on what you mean by "had to reinstall Windows XP."

Excel (which is what is generally used to open the *.xls files) is not part of Windows XP.  It is rather a part of Microsoft Office.  If you have reinstalled Windows XP with a CD of Windows XP, you must reinstall Microsoft Office from his own CD.

In the meantime, you can open, view and print (but not change) xls documents using the free Excel Viewer: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=1cd6acf9-ce06-4e1c-8dcf-f33f669dbc3a&displaylang=en

You can get free viewers for Word and Powerpoint as well (see the bottom of the linked page).  If you don't want to buy Microsoft Office, you can download and install Open Office, which is compatible with Microsoft Word, Excel and other MS Office files.

I have a new HP computer and I can not open hotmail attachments (updated Automatic Windows Vista, IE8, activated and updated running).  When you try to open an attachment, the bar downstairs quickly moves to the right, but never appears a dialog box asking if you want to open or save the file.  Error message I get when I try to resolve it with the suggested steps indicates "module"wintrust.dll"was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005.  I tried to do the same command prompt, but still not received the same error.  Thanks for help anything.

    Hi Paul,.

Have you tried to download an attachment after you turn off your antivirus?
I had a problem in the past where the system was performed at Trend Micro Internet Security and Web content filtering (I think that's what it was called) was preventing attachments from download.
I would like to know what are your results!

  • Windows Mail wants to open all attachments with Word rather than Word, Adobe, pad etc. How can I get the attachments to open properly?

Windows Mail wants to open all attachments with Word rather than Word, Adobe, pad etc. How can I get the attachments to open properly?

    Hello

    1. Click the "Start" menu in the bottom left of Windows. Then select "Default programs".
    2. Click on the option "Associate any type of file or Protocol with a program."
    3. Select the file type you want to change the types of files listed. For example, if you want the text (.txt) file to open it in Microsoft Word instead of WordPad, choose '.txt '.
    4. Click on the "Change Program" button in the upper right window.
    5. In the list of programs, select "Microsoft Word". If Microsoft Word does not appear in the list, click on the button 'Browse' in the bottom right and choose Microsoft Word on your computer.
    6. Click on the button 'OK' and then 'close '. The next time you open this type of file, it will open it in Microsoft Word. Repeat this procedure for any other type of file you want to open in Word.

You do not open PDF files in Word. You need a PDF reader.

    Create a file association.

    1. download and save the attachment to the office.
    2. right click on the saved file.
    3. Select: Open with on the shortcut menu.
    4. click on: choose [default] program.
    5 Foxit or Adobe select:
    6. check: always use the selected program to open this type of file.
    7. click on OK.

This should allow you to open these attachments directly from email address now.

    If you need a drive:

Adobe is more "well known", but Foxit is much lighter and my personal preference.

  • Opening excel attachments in an email

I am able to go to my docs and open a previously save excel docs, but if I try to save the attachment to the email, or copy on my desktop and open it, I get the same problem. Any suggestion?

Looks like you have something stuck or too many items in your Outlook Secure temporary folder.  Try to drain and see if the problem persists:

Attachments remain in the temporary file folder secure Outlook when you exit Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007

  • Opening of attachments in the emails received in Windows Mail

For the last month I could not open or save attachments with the emails that I receive in my Windows Mail folder.  At the same time, I can not extract files from zipped files I receive (an empty folder is created but nothing is extracted).  I solved the problem of zip by downloading a separate program to decompress (7 Zip file manager) but still my main problem with opening/saving attachments in emails.  I see a post from Finekatz back in April 2009 had exactly the same problem, but could not see a solution has been found.  Please help - it's very annoying.  See you soon

I use Windows Vista, Windows Mail and Internet Explorer 9 if that helps.

Yes, Microsoft Office Word is responsible.

Save it in a folder of your choice. See if you can open it.
If you are able to open it this way, then you need this:
