Options for sharing local storage

I work with a test environment and familiarize myself with some of the more advanced options of VMWare.

Currently, in our lab, I have a server that has a ton of direct-attached storage. We have a San were included in the budget by the end of this year, but in the meantime, I would like to use this server as a substitute of SAN.

I'm looking for the cleaner way to do this under ESXi 5, preferably without spending any extra money. We have licenses for the VSA, but it seems that I can't use VSA without several servers in a cluster - which I did not. Is there a way to take advantage of VSA without creating a cluster VSA?

Is there a way do this within VMWare infrastructure that does not involve using something like FreeNAS or a similar solution, which will eventually create giant VMDK files that I have to deal with? I mean, I could lift a virtual server with a huge VMDK attached and ask one of the software solutions to give me iSCSI targets, but it seems hardly elegant. I might just install FreeNAS on bare metal server, but then I lose the use of the VMS host server.

Forgive me if this is basic - I did some research first. I am looking for a way to use the data store (s) on this machine for other servers who lack storage space.

Edit - not sure I understand the question / Setup... If the server that has a ton of local storage is already running ESXi?

"I'm looking for a way to use the data store (s) on this machine for other servers that don't have storage space" "

With the exception of the magic and mirrors behind VSA, ESXi does not have the ability to share a local data store. This data store must live somewhere else and be introduced to several machines in the way of an NFS share, target iSCSI or FC LUNS.

I was in that same boat a year ago--a company hired me on for a large project of VMware without realizing that the shared storage is the key to an installation of VMware. They ordered servers with cargoes of physical local storage. Oops. Finally convinced a SAN is the only way (this is also before the release of v5, therefore not VSA). We have since removed all disks, and have most of them redeployed elsewhere (a dedup backup on a physical computer).

  • How to disable the save option for shared reports in OBIEE?

    Hello

We have a set of ad hoc reports in the shared folder of OBIEE that will be accessed by approximately 50 users. Each user can modify reports by adding or removing columns and keep them according to their requirement. That's why users should not save reports in the shared folder. Instead, they should be able to modify reports and do a save as to save the reports in my folder. Kindly help us in disabling option for shared reports.

    Kind regards

    Ignore my last post.

    I vote to Raj

For these users try to read only on shared folders, so that indirectly save them is disabled on Shared as well as have to use Save as.

  • URI format for shared local files

Firefox uses this format to access shared files on a LAN... file:///host/path for example file:///computername/sharename/MyDocs/filename.txt.

This format is different from the standard form file://host/path that is used on other browsers, such Windows, Chrome.

This means Firefox doesn't gives me access to shared files when I coded in standard format URI in my local HTML documents. Why is Firefox different or non-standard.

Hi seebee, file:///host/path apparently is the standard form for a unc path:

"It's five slashes - two for the Protocol, one to indicate the root of the file system, and then two more to indicate the beginning of the name of the server.

  • List of all virtual machines running on a local storage

Y at - it a script when it is applied to the virtual center would show the virtual machines that are running on a local storage of an esx host.  We have about 40 esx running on virtual Center host and there are some VM running on local storage that we have to go offshore, but I need a list of these virtual machines.

If it helps the naming convention for the local storage data store is "exhostname_local".  This is the norm for all hosts.

    Any Advisor.

    It must be Friday

    Try it like this

    Get-Datastore local* | where {$_.ExtensionData.Host.Count -eq 1} | Get-VM -Location $_ | Select Name

  • Don't make a left click or close the popup settings for Flash Player local storage

New book from Surface, 200% display scaling. cannot left click or close the popup of local storage settings Flash Player (which is not scaled). Make a right click works, but cannot get rid of blocked dialogue. I see people saying Flash dialogues only work with the scaling to screen 100%, but this would make the screen of 3000 x 2000 pretty unusable. Is there a better solution?

I just ordered a couple for the team the other day.  It took some time for our supplier of equipment start their storage.

These dialog boxes are problematic for a number of reasons.  I'd love to see them disappear entirely.  In most cases, what you run is our protection fromclickjacking anti - being overzealous.  Flash Player is in an uncomfortable position, where it is difficult to ensure that we are the object of above and that our security dialogue box is not obscured by something malicious that tries to make you click on it.  This is particularly problematic if the dialog box appears on things that move, such as video.  Fixed bugs in the logic of clickjacking is a game of whack-a-mole, so usually set us on a config and finds that he has beaten another combination of factors of density/zoom screen/resolution.

The best way to deal with the situation is to simply stop the dialog box to display in the first place.  The days when disabling Local Shared Objects in Flash you bought anything in terms of protection personal information are over long - HTML5 provides much more powerful functions to develop behavioral followed resilience.  The best approach in trying to stay private is to use only the browser incognito-private browsing mode.  This tricks Flash into thinking it has access to whatever he wants to write, but it happens in a temporary directory that is destroyed when you exit the private browsing session.

Since Flash Player think actually that it runs with rein in Incognito mode, without dialog boxes to throw (unless you have set the default privacy preferences in the drive).  Incognito mode is far superior to management of granular controls of the Flash, because it also beats the approaches to monitoring of client - side HTML5 equivalent * and * is not usually degrade the user experience.  We do also some extra stuff to help the hurt to do server side footprints, like turning a very minimal list, sorted by alphabetical order of the policies in Incognito mode.  If you're curious about what can be done exclusively on the coast Server (and want to be depressed), check out https://panopticlick.eff.org/.

Anyway, for this purpose, you can configure Flash Player to always allow sites to store local shared objects, or you can allow it on a site-by-site basis if it is a site of particular video or something that gives you consistent headaches.

To do this, go to control panel > Flash Player > storage and choose an option.

It is also interesting to note that there is a lot of superstition there since the beginning of the 1990s on the 'Flash Cookies' / shared/LSO local objects that holds true anymore.

When you clear the cache of your browser, we remove our LSO.  The feature was scheduled for things like game save data and caching assets, but some smart marketing people find it useful to backup the data in the cookie of the user store, so that they had followed who survived a user to delete their cookies.  While the unfortunate and embarrassing, we corrected for a long time that, by adopting a behavior that we believe best match user expectations.  Unfortunately, once you get the stench on you, it is difficult to reverse.

    Hope that helps!

  • vSphere 6 FT cannot yet compensate for shared storage takedown?

    Hello

a few questions about the PI with vsphere 6.0 — we just noted this in the test lab:

    (a) is it true that the 'source' vm where you want to enable IP MUST be on shared storage? because it seems that way.

As you mentioned in the documents, it is now possible to locate the storage for the target on a separate storage VMDK (this can also be a non-shared storage just seen by the target host).

Now the second question: we ft´t just a machine (source on the shared storage, target on a local storage of target esxi. Bootet, installed the virtual machine just cool. Each host may die - all cool.

NOW, we killed the shared storage of laboratory. We wondered: Hmmmm... OK... If the second host the vmdk and both hosts have the namespace and the vmx why not keep the virtual machine running on the target storage? But what we saw was disappointing: the protected virtual machine became unresponsive. Is this expected behavior? The new ft cannot lose the shared storage?

    Best regards

    Joerg

Unfortunately, FT in vSphere 6 still relies on storage shared for the tiebreaker file and source VMX file and other functions.

  • Local storage is a viable option with VMware?

At this point, I have concluded the following: 1) good shared storage is very expensive compared to good local storage. (2) good shared storage is much more subject to complex failures as local storage. Because live storage migration exists, I think I'll empty the shared storage to reduce complexity, increase availability and * performance *.  I've added emphasis to the latter, because my anecdotal experience has not been good to achieve this: my MegaRAID cards that perform very well under linux regularly perform like absolute garbage under ESXi 5.x. Can someone help me out here?  Is there a good RAID card which allow the performance of local data store in ESXi?  LSI cards are cursed?  I have to sacrifice a goat or a kind of singing and dancing for the gods of EMC? Because of the HUGE General fresh price on the shared storage, I intend on executing all SSD (the new Samsung 850 s will be 150TBW, which is great for my purposes) for the local data store. Any guidance would be appreciated.

For posterity, the solution was to create a San with Windows Server 2012 and export "Storage space" on iSCSI.  It is a very affordable way to serve the high performance shared storage because they make the SSD caching. At this point, we will probably go through Hyper-V, since VMware offers no compelling storage solutions (I understand no - EMC holds a majority - no need to explain).

  • vMotion and Shared vs Local storage

    Greetings to all

It does not say much on the local storage in my book by Lowe.

In fact its as if no one is using to vSphere5 without an external storage array any.

It indicates that 'the shared storage' is required for vMotion.

But I when I talked to a vMWare engineer said he local storage will work as a shared storage.

Kind of confused here. I saw that this mentioned anywhere.

We have two new servers Dell with ESXi5.

    They have discs SAS6 6 x 300 G each. It's our storage.

We want the ability to run vMotion between these two servers.

Can it be configured to be a storage shared in vCenter Server or when you add a virtual machine?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Local storage for ESXi - SD USB or a traditional hard drive

We will replace our ESX host soon with new hardware and I'm on the fence about the use of a player USB SD 4 GB or traditional hard drives in a RAID. Obviously, the reader SD has its advantages, namely its speed and reliability, but is reliable enough to give up using redundant hard drives?

As someone mentioned previously, we spend much of our time concerned with our redundant hard disks, expecting to fail. Several times the failure is related to moving parts in the drive also. SD readers have the pleasure of having no moving parts to wear out or fail. But what good are they?

Sells the dealer that I spoke with them for 3 years and never heard of a failure. His $62 for 4 GB, so it's not a bottom of the line edit. It is designed to be in a HP DL380G7, once again, I doubt that it is a lower end model.

I'm leaning toward the SD drive rather than traditional drives, but I wanted to get feedback from others who may have used this before configuration. I'm looking for the successes and failures (and the reason for the failure).

4 GB is enough for installation (ESXi 4.1) and I have not any more local storage as VM is on the shared storage and the assistance as AppSpeed and esXpress VM program I can also install it on the shared storage (where in our current datacenter these are installed on the local storage). Or should I worry about this size with respect to logging or something else?

    Thanks in advance, please discuss.

    Eduard Tieseler

I had a fight 100 ESX hosts running by USB - only questions I ever had were with the original green USB keys that HP provided in the first days of ESXi on USB.

I like the approach of USB for several reasons:

    1. no local physical disk required, less moving parts = less material problems

    2. If you have local physical disks, you can use these as the dumping grounds for the ISOs etc.

    3. If rebuilding a server, I can remove the old USB key and press a new - and recover simply by replacing the OLD USB key

    4. I can pre-generate a USB one double key as a method of construction of servers in bulk (not tested on 4.1u1 well)

    5. I've had many many hard drive failures. . USB (except Green HP ones) have never failed on me.

In addition, your syslog problem isn't treally a 0 - practice problem is to get servers to connect to a centralized in any case syslog box (I would even if I used not USB/SD)

Good luck - let us know what you decide.

  • I get a request for local storage through Adobe flash which I can't get rid of

When I opened a site of video or audio as the NPR media player http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlayer.html?action=2 & t = 1 & islist = false & id = 370394953 & m = 370394958 & live = 1 I get a request for Adobe Flash Player settings for Local storage. Clicking on accept or decline does not a doggone thing. I don't have the problem with Google Chrome, but I really prefer to use Firefox. I had the problem with other sites next to NPR (National Public Radio All Things Considered). It does not interfere with the download, but there really with the NPR player. Flash does not work on some web sites. I never had a problem before with flash on FF in the nearly 15 years that I've used FF. Recently it has stopped working for some reason any and on some flash sites does not, NHL.com and site of kid Herotopia being just two of them. I updated FF, Adobe flash, the reinstalled version them repeatedly deleted all the files that have been stored on my laptop; that is, profiles, saved favorite nothing that I could find in user accounts and in the local app, low local and roaming data folders. What is strange, is that I can't set the local storage for flash either. When I visit the Adobe site to view the Adobe Flash Player Settings Manager I can move the scroll bar, but cannot check the: allow third-party flash content to store data on your computer. I can't do it on a Web site where the flash does not work. When I try and it changed on any site that it goes back to zero. Not sure if it is a part of the problem. I got tired of many suggestions on the pages of material here, but nothing works. I even tried this http://forums.adobe.com/message/4566499#4566499#4566499

The other strange thing is that I used to get the "warning: script does not" prompt that displays "a script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding." You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script ends. "sometimes when I would buy on Macy's.com. This is the only site that it happened.
I know I have only little technical knowledge, but I have tried to figure this out for a few days and do not know what is happening. The only thing I can think is that I somewhere files corrupted causing this problem. I have just updated to Windows 8.1 tonight in the hope that can help, but nothing helped. I would be very disappointing if I couldn't use FF or must go back using Chrome and FF.

  • Suggestions of RAID for local storage of ESXi5.

I'll put up a little POC ESXi 5 Ent environment and you want to use local storage. (5 x 146 GB 15 k disks). I'm not really worried about space, the virtual machine will be small and fair for the POC, but I want to put in place the discs of the best that I can. I read about a large RAID 5 and 1 spare HD, 1 small RAID 1 for ESXi and then RAID 10 for VM.

What is a good best practice which will INCLUDE a built-in redundancy incase I want to lose a player.

    Thank you!

    Say 5 concerts for esx...

Make at least 6 GB for the operating system and scratch partition can be configured! Depending on how the controller RAID calculates disk space, 5 GB may be simply too little a few bytes. I usually do 10 GB which allows for a small store of data that I use for ISO images.
