What if all you want to do is to learn the db and its concepts, why you are bothered about license that you will not use this database on any machine except your own laptop and not for any other purpose except learning, isn't it? If the answer is Yes, the OTN license will be enough for you. The only time where you want to be worried about license if you have plans to use the software downloaded for commercial purposes. Anyway, if you really want to use only a licensed copy, you can get one, and the least expensive option would be to use a Personal Edition license. Case of https://shop.oracle.com for the same thing.

  Well, let's first - become familiar with SQL * Plus - Oracle standard tool. Maybe it's a little 1980
  but it will be available on absolutely every system you use. As long as a student, I don't think you
  have a lot of money to spend on tools - so download Oracle's SQL developer tool (free)
  and experiment with it.

  On your own systems, there are already scripts - do (presumably in Unix - if Windows, use the search)

  Hello, I want to use Oracle Database Enterprise Edition and Oracle Data Mining for my master's thesis, and maybe we can publish a book of science in the end. I already downloaded the database and work on it, but I need to know if it is OK to use the software free of charge during the preparation of my thesis. Is that what I should pay or should I inform Oracle about this? I don't know anything about using Oracle products for research projects. Any information you provide will be appreciated.   The directory must be different from your durectory u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe xe. Use a meaningful name like /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/gtw - just a different subtree is sufficient.

  I'm trying to get Oracle Application Express Listener to run using Oracle for J2EE (OC4J) containers. As I was doing this, I noticed that the option Oracle Containers that I try to use would not actually work with APEX, so I need to know if he can or cannot be used.   I let the ORACLE_HOME variable systemic intact (i.e. on the value of the database) and set the local value for the variable in the script to start for the OC4J. So if you use oc4j.cmd, you could put a whole script, like start_oc4j.cmd which could look like this:

  SET JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_26
  SET ORACLE_HOME=D:\oracle\oc4j_extended_101350
  "%ORACLE_HOME%"\bin\oc4j.cmd -start
  

  And you can start your OC4J with this script wrapper without disturbing the system wide ORACLE_HOME.

  To do this, I can resue the same Oracle repository for the restoration of the FDM application on newly installed instance.
