P2V Gentoo ESXi 4 fails

Hello

Two days ago, that I tried to P2V my old gentoo box from the data center to a test server ESXi here at home.

I did the following steps: downloaded the converter and installed the server on my linux only to text box, opened ports tcp and permitrootlogin on ssh.

I started the conversion everything works smoothly up to 98% and then I get the following error:

Error: Impossible to reconfigure the virtual machine target.

When I try to start the virtual machine, I get this:

VFS: Cannot open the device root "sda6" or unkown-block (0,0)

Please add a correct 'root =' boot option. Here are the available partitions:

0300 4194301 had pilot: ide-cdrom

Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unale to mount root on unkown-block (0,0)

Some things to note:

-the physical server has ide drivers and it's Moose grub.conf:

title = Gentoo

  1. Partition where the image of the kernel (or operating system)

root (hd0, 0)

#kernel /boot/linux-2.6.22-hardened-r8 root = / dev/hda6 init = / bin/bb

kernel /boot/linux-2.6.22-hardened-r8 root = / dev/hda6

It has to do with the fact that the custom kernel that I build has no support for scsi devices?

quick glance:

I removed the scsi controller

change the CD-ROM IDE 1:0 drive

and added the vmdk as IDE0:0

don't worry about the modified sequence of lines.

I always sort by alphabetical order - in this way, it is easier to find the

When you extend the data store on the vSphere Client Console, I get the error message:

Anyone an idea why I can't extend the data store? The new drive is correctly detected.

I need to install a vm with 14 Slack, install vmware tools with standard of the functions vmsync, mercurihectopascalometer and other procedures.

But when I try to do a guest virtual machine soft stop, the following message is displayed:

If you have configured a custom script reset this virtual machine, make sure that it contains no errors.

Try again the operation will ignore the script to fail. You can also submit a support request to report this problem.

But if you try again, the closing is done

    Could someone help

    Hi rubensinfo,

It seems that the poweroff on your VM Slack script does not work correctly. Whenever a VM engine is requested from the user interface, a corresponding script is executed inside the guest OS. These scripts can be found in /etc/vmware-tools /. The transaction for example would use the shutdown script poweroff-vm-default. If this command is unable to run properly, the operation will fail. You should have something similar to the following in the vmware.log of your SLACK-14 virtual machine.

"[msg.tools.rebootFailed] the request to reset this virtual machine failed because the corresponding VMware Tools script did not run successfully. If you have configured a custom script reset this virtual machine, make sure that it contains no errors. Try again the operation will ignore the script to fail. You can also submit submit a support request to report this problem. »

A quick check on my configuration reveals that the script cannot run because he complains that "ifup" command is not available. Indeed, the command is not available in my VM. See below:

    root @: / etc/vmware-tools #. / poweroff-vm-default
    Thu Sep 4 22:35:01 IST 2014: execution '. "/ poweroff-vm-default"
    Thu Sep 4 22:35:01 IST 2014: execution '. "/ scripts/vmware/network"

Sep 04 22:35:01 network: ifup not in the search path.

I think that your problem will be solved if you can run the script successfully in an autonomous way (from the bash prompt).

  • Operation of ESXi installation failed

    Hi guys,.

For a new installation of ESXi 5.1, the storage team gave a LUN to start 10 GB of our EMC symmetrix storage box. When I try to install the ESXi by selecting the LUN to 10 GB I get this error below.

This program has encountered an error:

    (Use the arrows to schoo)

Error (see the log for more information)

A doubt, is that the storage team gave ID LUN 1. I heard that the boot LUN must be 0. Will this be a problem? And they have already set up multiple paths to the storage array. Which will cause a problem?

Sorry guys, the storage team forgot to bring the disks online. Its solved now. Thank you.

  • Ping IP of ESXi host fails after reboot? Newbie

    VMWare ESXi 4.0.0 ReleaseBuild 171294 - HP ProLiant DL360 G4

The server turned craps so we got a used that even make and model and shared disks.  Now we cannot connect with the customer and we cannot ping, ping times out.  When we ping from the console we get inconsistent results, can ping ok, the first IP addy and then fails on the second ping, or it connects to the second IP addy, but fails to ping first that it resolve the hostname constantly.  We stopped and started the management network and Management Agents a couple of times but no joy.

I have the Articles KB 1008446 ping to the ESXi host IP fails after reboot, 1003490 restart the Management Agents on an ESX or ESXi Server and 1003677 Tech Support Mode of emergency support.

What must we do to recover the server to an operational state? If there is other information needed to help us please let me know.

And, what distro and version is ESXi 4.0.0 inspires?  I read that it is Redhat, but I couldn't find the version.

I have worked with Soloris, Linux and Aix over the years, so I am comfortable working from the cmd line if need be.

    Thank you

ESXi is not Linux. The VMkernel is VMware. The small console that runs the VMkernel is busybox. ESX has a VM management based on RedHat 5, but here again the VMkernel is all VMware.

I would check that the embedded NICs are working properly. Start with a linux rescue disk and test.

If all extracted would reset the system configuration from the yellow Console screen. Your configuration will be lost, but your machines virtual etc. will be OK. You will need to add to the inventory.

  • Upgrade to ESXi 4 failed or crashed - no comments or the viclient.exe tool

    Hi all

I tried to upgrade my server ESXi 3.5 to 4 with the Host Update Utility 4.

It seems that I had my main administration on an old network card interface is no longer supported by ESXi4.

If in the reboot of the machine he did not find the network - but seemed version 4 start OK.

I had installed secondary network card that still, the system could see (intel 1000 gt) flies over the management network back to it through the console interface, however, none of the feedback tools are installed and the vmware - viclient.exe is not on the machine.  I'm guessing that these get unpacked later in the upgrade process?

My question is can I run the new host update utility and run again another upgrade with the zip package?

Or other recommendations to resolve the failure of the upgrade?

I wondering before I am really living things.

    Thanks for any help.

    Paul.

You can run the utility to update again. I did it several times where the framework for an update or the fix failed. If I remember running the VI client against a host 4 2.5 upgrades the VI client and I think that it downloads of vmware not the host. Can be a problem. If you download the 4 client and install the new update utility. You may be able to extract the image ISO ESXi as well.

  • Install ESXi 5 fails in my computer 9

I have problems to get ESXi 5 Workstation 9.

At first, it worked fine and I got it setup on vm 5 or more. I deleted then these.

Whenever I try to install there is now an error message "the logs are stored on non-persistent storage.  See the product documentation to configure a syslog server or a partition scratch. "then it crashes without finishing.

I created a template from one of the installed earlier and I can deploy from that ok. I see no difference in the settings between the VM who work and those who are not.

I am sure that I do something stupid, that everybody has ideas?

It looks like the display of the banner (Alt + F11).  I think that the installer operated you screens.  What happens if you press Alt + F2?

  • RedHat Server p2v on esxi 4.1

    Hi guys,.

It is possible to do with a converter?

    There is a technical guide?

Which is a taken linux distribution supported?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Yes Redhat is supported - you can check what versions of redhat are supported on ESX 4.1 here:

    http://www.VMware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

It is possible to make the p2v with converter - in General, you just need to enable root ssh access to the source computer. The http://www.vmware.com/pdf/convsa_50_guide.pdf guide will detail how to convert a linux machine.

  • P2V on Redhat 8 failing miserably

    Hello

I was responsible for the conversion of a v8 box antique intact Red Hat in a virtual machine.  I had no problem of conversion of a series of boxes of SUSA before but it continues to refer to me.  The question I wonder is am I flogging a dead horse?  I know that this version is not supported, but is it because this will only work with success as a virtual machine or because nobody really wants to support older versions of LINUX?

Thanks in advance for any help

    /StuZ

    Welcome to the forum.

8 HR is not supported the cause is an old distro.

But it can work in an environment virtual (there are only a few problems with clock... screw).

But to convert it, do it manually (creating a VM, the boot with a CD live, netcat allows to copy all the data, change the configurare hardware and install the VMware Tools), or try to find 3rd party tool.

PS: thread placed in the converter box.

I understand that the driver is broken. could not help me?

Is this esxi 6.0 or later?  If so, it's a known issue. Please refer to KB KB VMware: ESXi 6.0 the network connectivity is lost with the NETDEV WATCHDOG timeouts in the vmkernel.log

There is a workaround script in the KB.

  • Software RAID and ESXi

I was intending to set up a CentOS 7 seveal VMs server and a file server. I was planning on setting up with BtrFs in software RAID 10. However, my company is looking get ESXi and wants me to get some experience with it so I'm considering now to configure the server with ESXi and all my virtual machines running on that. What I was wondering is how I can use software RAID to save what will be my main VM, install a CentOS. Will be setting up software RAID using BtrFS on the virtual machine is useless? If the drive containing the ESXi installation failed, I completely lose it?

Could I do something like install ESXi on a server on two SSDs running RAID 1, then install at least one of my virtual machines to use RAID 10 on hard drives or not because all this abstract?

    Welcome to the community,

ESXi does not support software RAID, but only "real" hardware RAID. With hardware RAID, you can set different logical volumes on different disc types, create warehouses of VMFS data on them and then decide on a per-VM basis where to store the virtual disks. You can even have several virtual disks per virtual machine and store each on a different data store.

You said install ESXi on SSD. Once started, ESXi runs in memory and can even be stored/started from an SD card or a USB device. There is no need to spend money for the SSD only install ESXi.
