Ping IP of ESXi host fails after reboot? Newbie

VMWare ESXi 4.0.0 ReleaseBuild 171294 - HP ProLiant DL360 G4

The server turned craps so we got a used that even make and model and shared disks.  Now we cannot connect with the customer and we cannot ping, ping times out.  When we ping from the console we get inconsistent results, can ping ok, the first IP addy and then fails on the second ping, or it connects to the second IP addy, but fails to ping first that it resolve the hostname constantly.  We stopped and started the management network and Management Agents a couple of times but no joy.

I have the Articles KB 1008446 ping to the ESXi host IP fails after reboot, 1003490 restart the Management Agents on an ESX or ESXi Server and 1003677 Tech Support Mode of emergency support.

What must we do to recover the server to an operational state? If there is other information needed to help us please let me know.

And, what distro and version is ESXi 4.0.0 inspires?  I read that it is Redhat, but I couldn't find the version.

I have worked with Soloris, Linux and Aix over the years, so I am comfortable working from the cmd line if need be.

Thank you

ESXi is not Linux. The VMkernel is VMware. The small console that runs the VMkernel is busybox. ESX has a VM management based on RedHat 5, but here again the VMkernel is all VMware.

I would check that the embedded NICs are working properly. Start with a linux rescue disk and test.

If all extracted would reset the system configuration from the yellow Console screen. Your configuration will be lost, but your machines virtual etc. will be OK. You will need to add to the inventory.

  • Windows 7 - Office updates fail after reboot

I am running Windows 7 32 bit, and last night I downloaded Microsoft Office 2010 and installed (upgrade of my edition of 2007 in the process).

By the time I wanted to shut down the computer that he reported that 6 updates have been downloaded and must be installed. I have not read what they were, I guess I can some how?

In any case, let him off and made the updates and off. Then I restarted the computer and it came with the second update screen that shows the percentage complete. At this point, I have to wait for what feels like 5 minutes (with remaining to 0%) and subsequently, that it says update failed and there back the changes. No error number is displayed.

After logging in I tried shutdown again and he followed the same process. I have not tried this morning yet. How can I solve this problem?

Thank you for your help. I was more happy with Windows 7, and until last night I didn't update window problems.

It would seem then that some Windows Update screwed to the top of the application of Digital Signature.  I've seen Windows updates do something funny on some computers, but this is a first for me.  Microsoft updates have been buggy lately to not feel alone.

You may need to use the F8 key until a new update of Windows solve the problem or Logitech Updater provides a new driver.

I've attached Logitech tips for reference.

  • Can't access ESXi host after VLAN for MGMT has been implemented?

    Hello

We run ESXi 5.1 and recently to get our network

Network administrator has received only 5 VLAN for MGMT vSwitch.  Since then, we are not able to ping on the ESXi host, or access in vCenter.

He received different VLAN for vMotion and vSwitch and VM.

Just would like to ask your advice what changes I need to do?

    Hello

That doesn't sound right. You have 3 different vSwitches with 2 ports on each, so you can not the team together on the side of the switch.

This would have been right if you had a vDS with 6 uplinks and various exchanges by the feature that you do not.

You have need of the network is to set up 3 different teams one by vSwitch and to start with that you have the management must be in the access mode so that you can retrieve with your ESX box connectivity.

Also the vMotion didn't need to be mode trunk you'll only of vMotion. Data (VM) must be master.

  • 6u2 ESXi host nested on VMware Workstation for Linux referee v12

    Hello all, I have

I have a lab environment virtual running in VMware Workstation for Linux v12, and my ESXi hosts do not work correctly on one of the virtual networks. All my troubleshooting suggests a problem with nested ESXi hosts that may be a bug, but I want to assure you that I did everything properly first. That's why I post here with the hope that if I made a mistake that maybe someone else can point out he me.

    Physical system

8 core Intel Xeon 2.1 GHz CPU

    128 GB of RAM

OS - kernel Linux 64 - bit w/3.19.0-32-generic Linux Mint 17.3 (fully updated from this announcement)

VMware Workstation 12 Pro - 12.1.1. Build-3770994 (fully updated from this announcement)

    Nested ESXi host VM

ESXi v6.0.0 (Build 3825889, completely updated from this announcement)

4 cards 'physical' (only 3 used for now)

-all use the e1000 NIC hardware virtual, but also tried vmxnet3 NIC with no difference

    -vSwitch0 use vmnic0 & 1 vmnet16 of virtual network in a pair of active / standby

    -vSwitch1 uses vmnic2 on network virtual vmnet18

-vmk0 used for management on vSwitch0 and vmk1 for iSCSI on vSwitch1

-"Promiscuous" mode and forged passes enabled on all Port vSwitch groups (activating or turning off these features makes no difference)

    Test performed until now

I checked that all the IP addresses and network masks used are correct.

With the help of vmkping I ping other nodes on the network vmnet16 with success.

With the help of vmkping I tried to ping the other nodes in the network vmnet18, but that has failed.

I have depolyed other non - ESXi VMs on the vmnet18 network, and they are able to ping each other, but are unable to ping or ping by the ESXI host.

I tried various material virtual NIC as mentioned before, but without changes in the results.

I tried to use only local network instead of the vmnet18 guest network segments with no change in results.

When I find out the status of the network adapters on the ESXi host through vCenter or host incorporated client vmnic0 & 1 time display network information, but vmnic2 shows no networks. Yet, I know that there is a network with different VM communicate on it. Moreover, I was able to get all of this work on a Windows system running 10 Workstation (this is the laptop that my employer gives me with).

Having built nested ESXi labs on different platforms as well as physical environments in the past, I'm very confused as to why I can't get this special configuration to work. At this point my gut tells me that this is probably a bug any with the nested themselves ESXi hosts. Since I can get all this work on vmnet16 including the management of ESXi hosts and the VCSA that I use, I am sure that my vSwitch configuration is correct (other than the IP address space and vmnic configurations is bascially the same). Because I can get other virtual machines to communicate over the network vmnet18 I don't see how can be a VMware Workstation for the issue physical Linux host. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? I read on the ESXi hosts nested under VMware Workstation after having known problems and bugs with networking. If anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks for any help others can provide!

    Kind regards

    Patrick

Well, the problem is now resolved. The problem was what covelli was trying to explain, but I couldn't because the physical host network adapters being mentioned.

The problem on the Linux host, but it was a problem of permissions with the virtual Ethernet adapters. The following article has the fix:
With the help of Ethernet virtual cards in Promiscuous Mode on a Linux host (287) | VMware KB

Even if I launched the workstation under the root user I have yet met this problem and which still makes no sense to me, but change the permissions solve the problem. I was not getting an error message on my Linux Mint and Ubuntu system, but when I tried on a second box of Linux Mint that I just got the error has been generated, and the error message was the above link it contains.

    So, here's what I learned:

    (1) the question has nothing to with a VMware Workstation definition that you can configure.

    (2) the question has nothing to do with a physical network card.
    (3) the question has nothing to do with any vmnic on the nested ESXi host.

    (4) apparently virtual Ethernet adapters are not the correct permissions when created.

All you have to do to fix this is:

    (1) open a terminal.

    (2) run the command ' sudo chmod a + rw/dev/vmnet * "(don't forget to run this each time that you create a new virtual network).

You can also create a group, as shown in the link above and simply give this group the correct permissions. Personally, I think it's easier to just give everyone the rw permission.

I appreciate the help that others have offered. I did not understand what was asked for in previous answers because of the terms that have been used.

It is all set up in the profile of the host and after reboot, it shows 'host unenforceable contract... I wanted to add the solution. I looked through the logs of boot and discovered that he had a conflict with some of the parameters when starting. In particular the IPv6 settings were great capricious and caused a kernel panic (sort of) which caused the ESXi host to cease to apply the profile.

  • 5.1 ESXi host is showing that does not

    Hi all

We are to vCenter 5.5 with Environment 5.1 ESXi hosts. On one of our ESXi hosts, we sometimes get to see 5.1 ESXi, (build 799733) host is not responding and the virtual machines on this subject are displayed as status disconnected at the end of their names.

When this happens, we are able to ping on the ESXi host and virtual machines are also able to ping / react to what is good, but he continues to be on different hosts at different times, all what I do when this occurs is to try to reconnect on the ESXi host and it connects fine and machines virtual hosting on she will return to the State normal and everything will be normal on this host. I want to understand why this is happening at different times and on different hosts of ESXi and ensure that this should not happen again in the future or find the before root cause is even worse.

so, could someone please look at this and let me know where to start troubleshooting this to find the root cause.

    Thanks in advance

  • ESXi 5.5 build 2456374 is unable to reconnect to the vcenter after reboot

    Hello

Have been hitting my head against it for the past few weeks. A host that has worked very well to a previous 5.5 build fails to reconnect to the vcenter after reboot once upgraded to build the 2456374. This also happens to the newly built guest. When a reconnection is started manually, it produces up to 80% (data of the host processing), then dies with a "general system error: internal error. I tried to remove the vpxa account, resetting the config network via the console, Cup NIC of the vswitch, removal of additional interfaces vkernel. The network via the console configuration reset allows me to reconfigure the net and tie vcenter and complete the host host configuration. However, as soon as I restart the host, is no longer, it reconnects to vcenter and I'm back where I started.

Unfortunately, this is not a 100% event. If I rebuild a host enough times, one of the new buildings will finally works correctly.

any ideas on how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

    QUESTION REOLVED!

Ok. so that was the easy part. Open a folder with vmware to identify the cause for this. After much digging, friction, pull hair, we found a clue in the hostd.log on the ESXi host.

2015-04 - T 02, 04: 49:05.481Z [23381 B 70 error 'Hostsvc.NetworkProvider' user opID=HB-host-185064@917-1d029f4d-d2 = vpxuser] an error occurred during extraction of stack instance configuration: incompatible value of ccalgo for the Netstack instance: defaultTcpipStack.

In my network performance test I did recently, I have significantly improved network iSCSI performance from the cubes NewReno network congestion control algorithm. For each of these hosts, as part of the installation procedure I now set the control algorithm of congestion on cube through the web interface. Finally, it is a little bug with that VMware believed fixed. Is not.

To confirm doubling you encounter this problem, connect to the host (ssh or remote cli) and run the following command:

list of esxcli ip network netstack

You should get a message saying that there is an inconsistency in the netstack configuration.

To fix, run the following command:

esxcli network ip put netstack defaultTcpipStack cubic n - c

the netstack from above list command should now display detailed information and will now be able to connect to vcenter.

If I understand correctly, an article will be published on this in the near future.

  • ESXi host does not connect more after a restart of the service LogInsight

    Hello

I put several (5.1 U1) ESXi to use the newly installed LogInsight. they sent him their event properly. I had to restart the log service Insight. After the reboot, the hosts stopped sending events. the vcenter continued, however.

I had to reload the syslog on the hosts to send their event to the perspicacity of newspaper.

    esxcli system syslog reload

any idea? I guess that's not normal behavior

    Thank you

    Eric

Hi Eric, this is unfortunately expected behavior. What you are experiencing is a bug in ESXi. More information is available in the Guide to installation/Admin under the troubleshooting log Insight section or at the following article: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2003127.

ESXi newspapers stop arriving at the Insight Journal

After you restart the log service Insight, ESXi hosts syslog messages stop arriving at the Insight Journal.

    Problem

In Insight Journal configuration changes require that you restart the log Insight service. After the restart, syslog RSS of ESXi are no longer available.

    Cause

Some versions of ESXi stop balls sending if connectivity to the remote syslog listener is stopped, even for a short moment. This problem affects the following versions of ESXi, depending on the communication protocol used.

  • PXI chassis not found after reboot host

I use a chassis SMU-1073, Win7 and Labview 12.0f3 on the host. After a restart of the host, MAX is unable to find the frame and I need to reboot the host. Rebooting usually works, but often it is necessary to power down of the PXI chassis too. It is very tedious and time-consuming. There must be a way to simply restart the driver (single) and set things right after a restart of the host. Thanks for your help!

    Hi bjuberchaub,

Let's see what crossrulz has to say about the race condition, but the situation you have described above does not sound like a driver problem.

Regarding "if I cycle power on the chassis and try to reconnect", we recommend strongly cyclical food your chassis when your computer is turned on.  It is the equivalent to remove a PCI (e) card on a desktop while it is running. It can cause permanent damage to your system.

The reboot sequence appropriate must be:

    1. Turn off the power to the host
    2. Disable the chassis
    3. Turn on chassis
    4. Turn on the host

Never do anything with your chassis power when your computer is turned on.

    Given that:

    1. I'd be interested to see what looks like your Windows Device Manager when the steps above are followed.  Do you see unknown devices?
    2. The LINK is clear on the chassis power?  Is what color?
    3. This configuration never before without this behavior?

If I misunderstood your comment about cyclical diet and you just follow the steps I have outlined above, I would be interested in getting answers to questions 1 and 2 when your system is in a State of non-working (e.g. restart you computer without rebooting the chassis).

    Kind regards

  • HP Solution Center not working after reboot (scan fails also)

My HP Photosmart 3310 software fails after a reboot, the day or the installation of the printer in Windows 7 64 bit.  No error - it is said that installation is not completed and to connect the USB cable (it worked only 1 hour ago), or the printer is offline.  I can reach the printer via IP (192.168.1.64 - static IP).  The other computers in the House are printing and scanning very well.

Help I received via the software discussion and support forums is to re - install the software.  I did it more than 20 times - it does NOT work. Let me repeat if you have not received this the first time - software does NOT solve the problem.

The scanner and the printer work fine after that the software is completely installed.  The problem is that the printer and the scanner work not the next day.

    Yes, I tried:

    1. check the latest system and windows updates.

    2. turned and on the firewall.

    3. pull on the printer and connect via a USB cable.  "" The installation is complete, but I can't run this way. The problem comes back the next day when I tried using the printer as a network through the router.

4 when I "add" the printer to Windows printers list, it causes the software HP Solution Center to enter the "incomplete installation error.  Then, either the scanner or printer works, not both at the same time.  Other computers work fine.

    5. it's a brand new computer, if any old malware running.

    6. I uninstalled, reinstalled, installed multiple copies, etc. of the latest version of the software from this site (AIO_CDB_FSW_Full_Win_WW_130_141) printer.

    7. I ran the software patch network of HP, before and after the reboot, no real effect.  (CPE_SLP_NETWORKMSI_hpcom_000_006)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Rich

I found a solution to the issue of scanner!  I installed the software VueScan from http://www.hamrick.com/ , the software is designed for high end photo editing, so it's a no-brainer for her to scan documents.  The free version works fine. If I wanted to the cost of the professional version of the $90 is nothing compared to the time I've wasted on getting the HP software to work.

To resolve the problem of the printer, I installed the driver through windows and bypassed the HP software.  The only thing that miss me is now the ability to fax, but which can be performed directly from the HP Photosmart camera.
