P2V migration of FC SAN fixed system

Hi team,

I have a reuirement to migrate a physical machine that is attached with two EMC fc lun of 700 GB each. Please let me know if it is possible or not.

If it is possible what to do re thesteps I need to make successful p2V migration.

I use ESXi 5.1 and will migrate Linux Redhat 5.4, which is mounted with 2fc lun. It will be migrated in iscsi environment... Although I also FC ports on the esxi server.

Thanks in advance.

Hello

If you have any special requirement (as do not convert vmdk volumes in your LUN) I can't a problem or process special migration using vSphere 5.1 and VMFS 5.

Take a look at the maximum configuration, just in case.

http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vsphere5/R51/vSphere-51-configuration-maximums.PDF

Keeping time shouldn't be a problem either.

http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1006427

Be sure to install VMware tools after the p2v.

I also took a glance at this document, but it is since 2004!

http://www.VMware.com/support/V2P/doc/V2P_TechNote.PDF

Is he the most recent that I found

Maybe I'm missing something. Please correct me if I did not understand what you were asking.

    Hello

    I was wondering if I could migrate SAN-Boot System (OS boot area is placed on the SAN data store) to vm using vCenter converter Boot CD.

    Does anyone have the same situation or any information?

    I would be grateful for your advice, thank you

    Yes - you can do it. (I did this several times before... using VMware converter)

    If you perform a live migration, talkes converter care migreation by car, while the current operating system supports drivers to access the drives etc.

    If you think about it, your host may have local disks and convert online. from the SCSI controller, as the conversion process replaces the disc and injects the SCSI driver on the virtual computer.

    Just from VMware converter and migrate the machine while it is running and you should have no problem.

    If you want to use a P2V tool to perform a conversion 'offline', you need to configure the drivers / mappings for HBA, etc.. . This coud be very tricky.

    Good luck.

  • RE: P2V MIGRATION

    Hello

    I am very new to P2V. I had tested Clone hot and cold Clone migrating from a physical server (WIN2K3, WIN2K8, Linux) for VMware V-sphere ESXi5.0 and would like more information.

    So far been meeting technical barriers-

    1)      A). A lot of servers using software RAID (Windows & Linux), to what is cold / hot clone if I set the RAID controller card drivers before clone to VMware ESXi (SAN disk / LUN had been present at the ESXi 5.0 servers). If this isn't the chancec for the port of the failure from the physical to the virtual.

    ((2) (B) the most cost-effective for migrating from physical to virtual servers behind the firewall.

    (Possibility of 3) C) Any to customize the installation of cold CD Clone for VMware 4.1?

    Thank you.

  • Migration of the HP OEM system, dead motherboard - License Lock

    I replace the desktop computers that are both the same model of a HP Desktop Tower. The motherboard on one of the computers has been cut. Can I swap hard drives and always operate the system very well, but when I move the hard drive to a new system Windows 7 refuses to launch (license lock). The product code for the system was for Windows 7 Home Premium and we bought and used codes upgrade of Windows 7 Edition Family Premium to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, but the license lock still prevails.

    Can I (and what is the best route) to contact Microsoft to remove the lock of license?

    (It is not economically feasible to track down a motherboard for a 5 year old computer and continue to run on older hardware. The license must not be used on old hardware, dead.

    If not, is it possible to buy a license code Windows 7 retail and replace the code to get the job of the computer?

    [Reason: I tried to migrate to a new version of the trial of Windows 10 and transfer, but the original system contains proprietary software required that we don't have access to the installation files.]

    The OEM of Windows 7 versions are identical to the versions commercial full license with the following exception:

    -OEM versions don't offer any free direct support from Microsoft technical support Microsoft

    -OEM Licenses are tied to the computer first you install and activate it on

    -OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

    -OEM versions does not move directly from an older Windows operating system

    Have you tried to restart by phone?

    How to activate Windows 7 manually (activate by phone)

    1) click Start and in the search for box type: slui.exe 4

    (2) press the ENTER"" key.

    (3) select your "country" in the list.

    (4) choose the option "activate phone".

    (5) stay on the phone (do not select/press all options) and wait for a person to help you with the activation.

    (6) explain your problem clearly to the support person.

    Because Windows 7 is in limited stock because Microsoft ended sales in October 2013, this created demand due to its rarity. This means the retail boxed copies request a bonus, while the OEM System Builder copies remain affordable.

    You can find software OEM System Builder of dozens of online merchants. The current price for OEM Windows 7 Professional Newegg, for example, is $ 140. When I checked a few minutes ago, Amazon offered packages OEM Windows 7 Professional from several vendors at prices ranging from $ 101 to $ 150. When I checked earlier, a package specifically designed for reconditioned PCs cost only $ 50 for a 64-bit copy.

    There is no technical limitation to prevent you from using OEM software on your computer, although this software only works for a clean install, not an upgrade. In the past, Microsoft has been remarkably inconsistent in his advice to clients on the question of whether this practice is allowed. (See "is allowed to use Windows OEM on your own PC? Don't ask Microsoft. »)

    Hello

    I need to change the storage array in my environment and want to check the migration path. It's as simple as

    1. plug the new storage to existing servers Bay;

    2. create the new existing VMware Cluster data store;

    3. move VMs are old to new (Storage vMotion) or Offline data store;

    4 remove the old data store;

    5. disconnect the old storage servers;

    Are there problems with a cluster of vSphere 4.0 the migration in this way?

    Thank you

    Hello

    Once you connect the new SAN storage, make sure that the redundancy of paths and multitracks with path for each logical unit number selection is correct do ensure the availability and active/active paths are available.

    Also, better test all the components of the new SAN storage redundancy correct, as the power of connections of storage and mapping of table turning each components off / ON, then try your migration.

    (Current and evolving paper)

    I propose to publish a paper on the key factors to do a P2V project run as smooth as possible and complete timely. The reason? According to me, there is a gap in the confidence of the SMB in the start-up of an operation of codification (in any form) of a Virtual Infrastructure.

    The document is not intended to be a step by step guide but to contain the following topics: by commercial considerations, operational requirements, review, target, during Migration, Communication tools and procedures P2V environment.

    This publication will be sprinkled with real-world examples of how a general text book approach doesn't always work with pointers on how to opt out of the most common misconceptions.

  • migrate the NAS device file system

    Can I use rsync to copy the virtual host to the NAS disk or do I have to use the vmkfstools command?

    Any guest arrested or Hibernate mode can be reproduced by any tool you like (rsync, unison, cp, mv, no matter).

    No risk of problems with disc ID / Grub?   How do I point to the new location of the virtual disk?

    You didn't play something with raw devices? Haven't you? If this is not the case, the 'virtual' disk is only one (the) (*.vmdk) file that is moved/copied to the new location. Which does not affect its content, nor that it does not change the disk IDS.

    There could be problems with ISO attached hard coded paths for CD/DVD. They can be set by editing the appropriate *.vmx or using the WebGUI of Server 2 for this guest (guest physical or ISO settings based on CD/DVD).

    Is the same for drives, if you specify special data store options, the *.vmx expect to find his 'virtual' disk in the same place as the *.vmx.

    To be sure, take a look inside the appropriate *.vmx (open with a text editor).

  • vCenter Converter - P2V migration without dedicated boot partition

    Hello

    I'm looking to migrate to a physical computer to my ESXi cluster with vCenter Converter but actually I got this following error message:

    There is no directory "/ boot", mounted on the source machine. It is necessary to create a virtual bootable. Mount the directory "/ boot" on the source machine.

    Is it possible to ignore this message? In fact, this server is in production and I don't have any space on my hard drive to create another partition.

    I would like to know if we can convert a physical machine to a virtual machine without a dedicated boot partition.

    Note: I had a folder/boot but mounted on my.

    If anyone has any advice on this subject will be useful

    Yes, in theory, you can. / boot directory under / is OK, but this error message is a bit misleading - I'd say converter couldn't recognize your * discs * and so no partitions mounted, so he couldn't find/boot as a separate partition or as a directory under /. You use some software RAID (md) on your source server?

  • No automatic installation of VMware Tools after the P2V migration

    I wanted to migrate a Windows XP Machine Workstation 8 and everything worked fine.

    Then I tried to start an application in this virtual machine and it doesn´t work. I made a second migration before tools VMware and the driver installation has been finished, I started the application and it worked. But after installtion it didn t work more.

    I tried to cancel the installation, but that luckily possible.

    My question is: How can I force the virtual machine, that it does not install not the drivers and tools automatically? And how do I install only parts of the drivers and tools?

    Do not turn it on in the first place - or like a rude thing - rename temporarily the windows.iso
