    Hello

If you have any special requirement (as do not convert vmdk volumes in your LUN) I can't a problem or process special migration using vSphere 5.1 and VMFS 5.

Take a look at the maximum configuration, just in case.

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vsphere5/R51/vSphere-51-configuration-maximums.PDF

Keeping time shouldn't be a problem either.

Be sure to install VMware tools after the p2v.

I also took a glance at this document, but it is since 2004!

  • RE: P2V MIGRATION

    Hello

I am very new to P2V. I had tested Clone hot and cold Clone migrating from a physical server (WIN2K3, WIN2K8, Linux) for VMware V-sphere ESXi5.0 and would like more information.

So far been meeting technical barriers-

    1)      A). A lot of servers using software RAID (Windows & Linux), to what is cold / hot clone if I set the RAID controller card drivers before clone to VMware ESXi (SAN disk / LUN had been present at the ESXi 5.0 servers). If this isn't the chancec for the port of the failure from the physical to the virtual.

((2) (B) the most cost-effective for migrating from physical to virtual servers behind the firewall.

(Possibility of 3) C) Any to customize the installation of cold CD Clone for VMware 4.1?

    Thank you.

  • Proved the practical suggestion: physical to virtual (P2V) migration preparation and success - a guide to the real world experience.

    (Current and evolving paper)

I propose to publish a paper on the key factors to do a P2V project run as smooth as possible and complete timely. The reason? According to me, there is a gap in the confidence of the SMB in the start-up of an operation of codification (in any form) of a Virtual Infrastructure.

The document is not intended to be a step by step guide but to contain the following topics: by commercial considerations, operational requirements, review, target, during Migration, Communication tools and procedures P2V environment.

This publication will be sprinkled with real-world examples of how a general text book approach doesn't always work with pointers on how to opt out of the most common misconceptions.

Two high-pressure and successful migration (a merger and a disaster recovery / business continuity gap) will be the basis of the experience I'll shoot of.

  • vCenter Converter - P2V migration without dedicated boot partition

    Hello

I'm looking to migrate to a physical computer to my ESXi cluster with vCenter Converter but actually I got this following error message:

There is no directory "/ boot", mounted on the source machine. It is necessary to create a virtual bootable. Mount the directory "/ boot" on the source machine.

Is it possible to ignore this message? In fact, this server is in production and I don't have any space on my hard drive to create another partition.

I would like to know if we can convert a physical machine to a virtual machine without a dedicated boot partition.

Note: I had a folder/boot but mounted on my.

If anyone has any advice on this subject will be useful

Yes, in theory, you can. / boot directory under / is OK, but this error message is a bit misleading - I'd say converter couldn't recognize your * discs * and so no partitions mounted, so he couldn't find/boot as a separate partition or as a directory under /. You use some software RAID (md) on your source server?

Then I tried to start an application in this virtual machine and it doesn´t work. I made a second migration before tools VMware and the driver installation has been finished, I started the application and it worked. But after installtion it didn t work more.

I tried to cancel the installation, but that luckily possible.

My question is: How can I force the virtual machine, that it does not install not the drivers and tools automatically? And how do I install only parts of the drivers and tools?

Do not turn it on in the first place - or like a rude thing - rename temporarily the windows.iso

  • VM does not start after the P2V Migration

    Hello

Recently, I have converted an XP machine to VM. The conversion went smooth without any error.

While I'm trying to light the new virtual machine, we get an error "disk initialization error occurred. Press CltAltdelete to restart»

    Any suggestion will be appreciated

    Thanks in advance

    Arun

    Hello arunkvk,

And sorry for my bad English.

I had the same problem. When you convert your physical machine, on step 3 (View/Edit Options), you must change the settings of devices. In the second line, you have the point disk controller (default to "Preserve source"). You must change this point on the 'logic of SCSI Bus'. It's a good job for me and now my new boot VM normally.

  • P2V domain controller (for a test, the new virtual will not be connected to the network or used in production)

I wanted to check that won't affect my physical domain controller by performing a P2V migration to this subject, we would like to P2V our current DC (in production) to put in our test environment, it's so we can simulate one pass from 2008 to 2012. I would just check that install VMWare converter and performing P2V migration on the active domain controller current WILL NOT affect our current physical machine.

    Can someone advise?

DC and P2V = Don t do, since there is absolutely no guarantee that the DC P2Ved work. I had horrible experience during a migration of a data center to a new provider, the provider told us that P2V would be perfectly viable and that they had done several times. So ultimately they tested migration P2V, everything worked. Then, the day of the passage to the they did it again and AD did not come to the top. In the end we had to make a member server new rollback, as well as on the website of the provider and a classic dcpromo Setup does the job.

  • Physical server to virtual machine migration

I'm planning on migrating some if our biggest servers and I wonder witch method to use in order to get the fastest P2V migration. I've used both methods hot and cold, but y at - it performance that can be done to help accelerate the migration? The range of servers between 400 G-1 t of size.

    Thank you.

What I thought was that if the data files are on a different drive than the OS and application files that you may p2v the OS/APP disk and then you have your new virtual machine less data. Then present the existing SAN (previously used by the physical system) LUNs to the virtual machine as RDM virtual. Mount the LUNS and assign the letter nonsense (for windows or same mount point for NIX) previously used by the system physical one while you are finished.

This method involves less amount of data transfer and associated downtime. It depends of course if your DB data files are separate LUNS for your application files.

  • P2V, an area of workgroup Windows XP - VM crashes before post

I had around a dozen p2v migration type using VMware converter on servers with few problems. I usually use my office stand-alone converter. When I try to use it on this workstation PC it won't let me b/c of the problem of the rights of some of the window (a service remote installation task force won't work, thank you MS). So I install the converter on the box itself and do a conversion. Twice now the conversion seems to work, but twice the VM crashes on startup with a black screen and a cursor motionless.

The only differences I can think outside of what I mentioned, is that the PC itself has no sysprep files, etc. But he shouldn't need that if we're not redo the SID, etc. right?

Make sure that the virtual disk is not IDE.  Check the settings on the virtual machine--> hard drive to confirm (there will be a SCSI controller).  If the IDE drive, you can re - run the conversion but select not preserve the disk controller (select scsi controller from the drop-down).
