P7-1418 USB controller yellow exclamation

On my HP Pavilion p7-1418, the USB 3 controller stopped working. In Device Manager, two USB controllers show a yellow fringe, and I can't find the drivers for this problem on the HP site or elsewhere.

3 USB ports on the front panel do not work anymore, and neither do two 3 USB ports at the rear. However, the other four USB 2 ports at the back still work.

I ran PC HP hardware diagnostics (press F2 at startup) and all systems passed. The diagnosis did not show a problem with the USB controllers.

The controller is dead? How can I check?

Hello

You have a hardware failure.

If you purchased a 3 HP guaranteed expert three Committee should cover repairs.

If your PC does not have BIOS version 8.19then you could try updating the BIOS.

  • Bus SM driver and USB Ports can Point of Yellow Exclamation

    H8-1020 Desktop

    Windows 7, 64-bit

Looked in Device Manager and that's what I see:

Bus SM driver with yellow exclamation point

The USB drive letter even have

Looked at the HP website for the Chipset drivers and only saw the BIOS drivers.  Tried this update.  No change.

A run DXDIAG.  Don't see where USB or SM Bus drivers are listed.

Note the system has a discreet graphics card.

    Other suggestions?

Thanks to all the proposals.  But good ' ol Google saved the day.  I googled "hpe sm bus controller driver update" and it adds Windows 7.  One of the HP forum reply recently was to go to the Intel download page and download the Intel chipset drivers.  Did.  Exclamation point is more ugly next to the SM Bus controller.

Don't you think that it would be under the drivers for the MOBO or BIOS?  Or Chipset drivers?

The audio device is another problem.  Looks like the sound card has a dead chip.  Installed a new card his discreet and now music to my ears.

(Historical note: it all started when the original Pegatron Carmel mother died.)  Ordered a new one on ebay (same model and revision).  If I had the Intel chipset first, I wouldn't have had to wipe and re-install the operating system.

Thanks again.   I always learn a lot!

  • I use a Belkin USB wireless adapter. In Device Manager, I see this same adapter listed several times... with a yellow exclamation mark over it. However, an entry for this card will not have any problems indicated and work well.

I think that whenever this USB adapter is removed and reinstalled, the system is seen as a new USB device.  However, if I try to uninstall the list in Device Manager showing a yellow exclamation point, the system will not... I get a message saying "Uninstall failed...". This device may be required for the system startup.
    Suggestion?

    Hello Fgibson1911,

Thank you for your message.  All of these entries stay after you restart your computer?  In addition, what happens when you search for new hardware?  Try this and let us know the result.
Click 'Start' > right click on 'My computer' > select 'manage '.
    Click on Device Manager.
Right click on "Network adapters", and select "search the hardware changes.
    The "Yellow!" entries disappear?
We can't wait to hear back on your part.
    See you soon

Now, I need to use the computer on the internet and of course need of these at work. Go to the search on this site, I have re-installed the Chipset Driver and she appeared "found new hardware" for both. First of all, be aware that Windows XP reaches the end of life in April 2014 for more information, see Service Pack 3 for XP and Office 2003 end of life April 2014. Continued use of Windows XP should be avoided.

Assuming that you are willing to connect Windows XP to the internet, you must install at least Service Pack 3 XP: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

It is also recommended to install Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/security-essentials-all-versions and its last definition to minimize the risk of having a Windows XP installation without patch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971606 (32 bit)

You need to install the Dell system software: http://ftp.dell.com/utility/Dell_System-Software_A06_R288017.exe

    Intel Chipset Device Software: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=20775

For the controller network and video device provide the hardware ID as there are variants to this model. See the Windows reinstallation Guide / a Clean Install of Windows XP step 12: http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

As mentioned above the drivers need to be downloaded on a USB stick using another PC.

The Device Manager has yellow exclamation on other devices. Peripheral unknown bus controller universal series (usb) 1) 2 SM bus controller) 3). No driver installed. No driver found on driver updates. Not causing no problem but I don't know what could be the devices.

Thia article gives some indications - http://techforcommoners.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/how-to-identify-unknown-devices-in.html its worth a read to see if it helps.

Basically, it starts by looking for the hardware id in Device Manager and it enter the PCIDatabase to see if it can find all matches. It is sometimes useful in such cases.

Another place to look is 'information system' (enter 'system info' (without the quotes) as the research) and look in there for pointers, esp in "components - peripheral problem."

Now, in devices and printers, I have a laptop icon that is not one of my devices, but the Device Manager lists in "Other devices" with a (USB) universal serial bus controller, which is also included in the icon of the computer laptop properties under the material.  The yellow exclamation point is for troubleshooting.  The problem is: I do not own a laptop device.

I want to remove the icon of the laptop and its inscriptions, including the (USB) universal serial bus controller.  Both are marked by a yellow exclamation point, but, of course, they do not work because they do not exist.  But this icon of the laptop has name my PC on it.
